Maximale Konvergenzordnung bei der numerischen Lösung von Anfangswertproblemen mit Splines

1982

In [10] a general procedureV is presented to obtain spline approximations by collocation for the solutions of initial value problems for first order ordinary differential equations. In this paper the attainable order of convergence with respect to the maximum norm is characterized in dependence of the parameters involved inV; in particular the appropriate choice of the collocation points is considered.

Influence of gallic acid esters on drug-metabolizing enzymes of rat liver

1982

The effect of three antioxidants, propyl, octyl and dodecyl gallate, on hepatic drug metabolism in male rats was studied in vivo and in vitro. When fed at a dietary concentration of 1% for 14 days, only dodecyl gallate increased relative liver weight. Cytochrome P-450 content was not influenced, but a slight increase in cytochrome b5 content was observed after the feeding of propyl gallate. Monooxygenase activity (benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase and ethoxycoumarin-deethylase activities) was not affected by propyl or octyl gallate, but a significant decrease in benzo[a]pyrene-hydroxylase activity was apparent in rats fed dodecyl gallate. Kinetic parameter determination in monoculture and monosubstrate biological reactors

1982

The kinetic parameters of a biological reactor, operating under monoculture and monosubstrate conditions, have been determined. Pure cultures of Nocardia corallina and Pseudomonas fluorescens species have been used with phenol as the only organic carbon source. The experimental runs have been carried out both in a batch and in a continuous stirred reactor. The batch results have been interpreted by zero order kinetics in phenol and first order kinetics in biomass. The kinetic-constants have also been calculated. The activation energy has been determined only for the Nocardia species. Using this strain, the continuous reactor, working without biomass recycle, has confirmed the first order ki…

Electron impact mass spectra of chlorinated methyl propanoates

1982

The mass spectral fragmentations of all eleven chlorinated methyl propanoates have been studied. Deuterium labelling and metastable ion analysis were used to elucidate the fragmentation mechanism. The molecular ion peaks of all compounds are small, except methyl 3,3-dichloropanoate (38%). In most cases α-cleavage gives the base peak [COOCH3]+, and the loss of a chlorine atom from the molecular ion is characteristic of the 3-chloro, 3,3-dichloro and 3,3,3-trichloro compounds. Metastable ions showed the losses of small neutral molecules such as CH3OH, CH2CO, CO2 and CO from the [MCl]+ ion. α-Cleavage and the loss of Cl˙ gives an intense [MCOOCH3Cl]+˙ peak, which is the base peak in the spectr…

Some supplementary results on the 1+ $$\sqrt 2 $$ order method for the solution of nonlinear equations

1982

Recently an iterative method for the solution of systems of nonlinear equations having at leastR-order 1+ $$\sqrt 2 $$ for simple roots has been investigated by the author [7]; this method uses as many function evaluations per step as the classical Newton method. In the present note we deal with several properties of the method such as monotone convergence, asymptotic inclusion of the solution and convergence in the case of multiple roots.

Effekt von Calcium und Magnesium auf die Parathormonfreisetzung aus humanem Parathyreoidea-Gewebe in vitro

1982

The effects of calcium and magnesium on parathyroid hormone release from eight adenomas causing primary hyperparathyroidism and six hyperplastic glands causing hypercalcemic secondary hyperparathyroidism were investigated in vitro using single cell suspensions from the respective tissue. We observed suppression of parathyroid hormone release with increasing concentrations of either cation. The quantitative hormone secretions of both adenomatous and hyperplastic glands was identical.

Trapping of ions from high energy sources into a radiofrequency ion trap

1982

An attempt is described to confine ions, created externally and accelerated to some energy, in an rf quadrupole trap. 4 keV Ba+ ions were stopped on a Ni foil, placed in an aperture of one trap electrode. The Ba then was evaporated from the heated foil and ionized by electron impact. At background pressure of about 10−5 mbar of various light buffer gases (He, H2, N2), the trap was filled once with 105 ions, at a minimum primary ion number of 1010. The storage time was 10 min. From the data obtained the possibility of spectroseopic experiments on rare isotopes, created with accelerators or nuclear reactors, is discussed.

1982

Gas chromatography of mixtures of aliphaticn-alkyl acetates (CH3−COOR), chloroacetates (CHCl2−COOR), dichloroacetates (CHCl2−COOR) and trichloroacetates (CCl3−COOR), where the alcohol chain length (R) varied between 1 and 8, has been studied on SE-30, Carbowax 20M and OV-351 glass capillary columns with programmed temperatures from 50°C at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10°C/min. Compounds in the homologous series are eluted in the direct order from methyl ton-octyl acetate. The isomeric chloro esters are eluted on SE-30 according to their boiling points in the order: mono-, di- and trichloro isomer, whereas on polar columns di- and trichloro esters are eluted in the reverse order. On the ecology of littoral Oligochaeta of an oligotrophic Finnish lake

1982

In material sampled from 0.5–6 m on two sampling dates and three subareas the dominant Oligochaeta were Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri Claparede and Peloscolex ferox (Eisen), both composing more than 30% of the abundances of oligochaetes present. The numbers of Oligochaeta were mostly higher in August than in May. Regional differences could be found although the lake seems to be very homogenous. Temporal and vertical variations were detectable in separate subareas. The oligochaete biomass was maximal at 2 m depth. In soft bottom sediments the oligochaetes composed 15.9% of macrobenthos biomass and 12.2% of numbers, but on the stony bottom only 1.9% of numbers. The ratio of Oligochaeta/Chironomida…

Periphyton growth and diatom community structure in a cooling water pond

1982

Periphyton (Aufwuchs) accumulation was measured on artificial substrates in a pond in central Finland which receives warm cooling-water effluent from a power plant. The growth of periphyton was generally more rapid on the substrates during the first two weeks of colonization near the inflow of the warm water effluent than in the middle of the pond. The maximum accumulation of periphyton was in spring and autumn (dry weight maximum at warm effluent was in spring 3.5 mg DW cm−2,2.65 mg AFDW cm−2; chlorophyll a maximum 3.96 µg cm−2 was found in autumn at pond-middle station). During mid-winter months the growth was strongly limited by solar radiation, but the growth was also slow at both stati…

Distribucion final de referencia para el problema de Fieller-Creasy

1982

The problem of making inferences about the ratio of two normal populations is usually known as the Fieller-Creasy problem, and it gave rise to a controversy among fiducialists and confidence-intervalists. A Bayesian solution to such a problem when the two normal populations have the same unknown variance was presented by Bernardo (1977) using reference non-informative prior distributions. The solution to the case in which the variances are not assumed equal is obtained here. Some numerical results for artificial populations are given

Der Stellenwert der chirurgischen Behandlung des Neuroblastoms

1982

Results of surgical treatment of 29 neuroblastoma patients between 1968 and 1980 are presented. 13 of these children have remained free from relapses and complaints for more than 2 years. Despite the progress in (immuno)chemotherapy and (immuno)radiotherapy the prognosis depends on the kind of surgery performed, also and especially in stages III and IV (after Evans). Among the author's own patients it became evident that both the survival rate and the survival period were increased in the prognostically unfavourable cases by subtotal resection. No representative collective statistics are known and it will probably take quite some time before these can be compiled, since it is extremely diff…

Improved Salmonella recovery from moderate to highly polluted waters.

1982

A new enrichment procedure for the recovery of salmonellas from aquatic environments is proposed. It has been tested in a eutrophic lake showing moderate to high faecal contamination levels (the Albufera lake near Valencia, Spain), and in effluents coming into a wastewater treatment plant. The new method consists of the addition of sodium novobiocin to a modification of Rappaport's medium (R10/43°C). The new medium (NR10/43°C) allows a better recovery of salmonellas from water than selenite broth.

Insertion of a malE B-Galactosidase fusion protein into the envelope of Escherichia coli disrupts biogenesis of outer membrane proteins and processin…

1982

The synthesis of a membrane-bound MalE ,B-galactosidase hybrid protein, when induced by growth of Escherichia coli on maltose, leads to inhibition of cell division and eventually a reduced rate of mass increase. In addition, the relative rate of synthesis of outer membrane proteins, but not that of inner membrane proteins, was reduced by about 50%o. Kinetic experiments demonstrated that this reduction coincided with the period of maximum synthesis of the hybrid protein (and another maltose-inducible protein, LamB). The accumulation of this abnormal protein in the envelope therefore appeared specifically to inhibit the synthesis, the assembly of outer membrane proteins, or both, indicating t…

Successful treatment of paraquat poisoning: activated charcoal per os and "continuous hemoperfusion".

1982

AbstractIngestion of paraquat results in an extremely dangerous poisoning. The first aim is to clear the gastrointestinal tract by inducing emesis and performing gastric/gut lavage; as much activated charcoal as possible should be administered per os and as quickly as possible. The best measure to eliminate paraquat from blood and tissue is hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal; it has to be performed in the sense of “continuous hemoperfusion” about 8 h/d over a period of 2–3 weeks. These measures give a chance to lower the lethality of paraquat poisoning.

Manometric assessment of oesophageal involvement in progressive systemic sclerosis, morphoea and Raynaud's disease.

1982

SUMMARY Oesophageal function was studied by radiography and manometry in fifty-one patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), fourteen patients with morphoea, twelve patients with Raynaud's disease and twenty-one normal subjects. Upper oesophageal sphincter pressure was not affected. Peristaltic contractions of the upper third of the oesophagus were significantly decreased in PSS and morphoea, but the lower two-thirds were affected only in PSS. Lower oesophageal sphincter pressure was significantly decreased in PSS but was normal in morphoea and Raynaud's disease. There was a significant correlation between oesophageal dysfunction and the duration of PSS. Manometry was better than …

A kinetic study of the cracking, isomerization, and disproportionation of n-heptane on a chromium-exchanged Y zeolite

1982

The kinetic rate constants for the cracking, isomerization, and disproportionation of n-heptane over a CrHNaY (32% chromium exchanged) zeolite catalyst at 400, 450, and 470 °C have been calculated. The interaction of n-heptane with a model Lewis acid such as BF3 and progress along the reaction coordinate have been studied by means of molecular orbital calculations. From the kinetic results, i.e., activation energies and frequency factors, and the theoretical calculations, it can be concluded that the controlling step in these reactions is not the formation of the carbonium ion, but the subsequent transformation of this carbonium ion. In addition, the theoretical calculations show that the a…

Analysis of the TK enzyme complex induced by HSV types 1 and 2 by means of isoelectric focusing and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

1982

Recently we have described that the Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-induced thymidine kinase (TK) induces AMP- and ADP-dThd-5'-phosphotransferase activities. We now demonstrate the heterogeneity of the described activities in isoelectric focusing experiments and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. A TK--mutant of HSV type 1 fails to induce these activities. The activities of the type 1 enzyme complex was neutralized by an anti-HSV-serum. The TK-enzyme complex expressed in LTK--cells transformed to a TK+-phenotype by sheared HSV-1 DNA was compared with the wild type TK complex in isoelectric focusing experiments. Additionally we demonstrate that the HSV type 1 enzyme complex has thymidylate kinas…

A new synthesis of 2-methyl-9-R'-10-R-5,6-dihydro-7H-pyrazolo[1,5-d][1,4]benzodiazepin-6-ones (4a-c) is deserved. Reaction of ethyl hydrazinoacetate hydrochloride with 1,3-diketones 1a-c gave both 3-methyl-5-(4R'-5-R-2-nitrophenyl)pyrazol-1-yl-acetate acids (2a-c) and the corresponding ethyl esters 3a-c. Reduction with the appropiate reducing agent of compounds 2a-c and 3a-c directly gave the title compounds. Compound 4a showed insecticidal properties against the house fly.

Beta-delayed neutron emission from93?100Rb to excited states in the residual Sr isotopes

1982

Beta-delayed neutron emission from the precursors93–100Rb to excited states in the residual nuclei92–99Sr has been measured by means ofγ-ray and neutron spectroscopy. In general, considerable neutron feeding of excited final states is observed. The experimental branching ratios (P ) are compared to predictions from statistical model calculations. It is demonstrated that the main parameter affecting theP -values is the shape of theβ-strength function (S β). For several Rb isotopes hindrance, respectively enhancement of neutron branches to specific final states is observed giving evidence for the persistence of intermediate structure of the neutron-emitting states. By the example of98Rb it is…

Bounding principles for elastic-plastic-creeping solids loaded below and above the shakedown limit

1982

Solids of elastic-perfectly plastic creeping material subjected to variable loads are considered within the infinitesimal displacement framework and a bounding principle is presented which holds below and above the shakedown limit. Through the choice of some free parameters, this principle generates a number of deformation bounds with practical meanings, some of wich coincide with known results for creeping and noncreeping material, while others constitute new results or generalizations of known results. The topic will be further studied in a subsequent paper [35].

Hemodynamic effects of dobutamine in children with cardiovascular failure.

1982

The effect of dobutamine, a synthetic catecholamine, was studied in 12 patients aged one day to 14 years with low cardiac output syndromes. After initial stabilization of the patients dobutamine was administered by continuous infusion in a dosage of 7.5 or 10 μg/kg/min. Heart rate, cardiac output (using thermodilution technique and/or pulse contour method), mean systemic and mean pulmonary artery pressures were determined before and after the dobutamine infusion. Systemic and pulmonary vascular resistances, cardiac index and stroke volume index were calculated. Cardiac output and cardiac index increased significantly in every patient, whereas the heart rate changed only slightly, suggesting…

Nuclear charge distribution and rms radius ofC12from absolute elastic electron scattering measurements

1982

Elastic electron scattering cross sections for the nucleus $^{12}\mathrm{C}$ have been measured in a momentum transfer range from 0.25 to 2.75 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. The data were analyzed in a model independent way with a Fourier-Bessel parametrization of the charge distribution. For the rms radius, the value ${〈{r}^{2}〉}^{\frac{1}{2}}=(2.464\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012)$ fm (no dispersion corrections applied) has been obtained, and agrees with those of other electron scattering experiments and with muonic atom experiments, but disagrees with data obtained from measurements of muonic x-ray transitions with a crystal spectrometer which show a larger rms radius. The extracte…
