Remeasurement of the Lifetime of the Isomeric 9/2+State in155Dy
1982
The isomeric 9/2+ state at 132.2 keV in the nucleus 155Dy has been populated through 3He bombardment (E = 27 MeV) of a 155Gd target. The half-life of the the 9/2+ level has been determined as 51 ± 3 ns. The decay modes of the 11/2-, 234.2 keV level have been confirmed. For both levels the hindrance factors calculated with the particle-rotor model have been compared with other predictions available.
The relation between tumor cell proliferation and vascularization in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas in the rat.
1982
Tumor cell proliferation and tumor vascularization were investigated in differentiated and undifferentiated colon carcinomas of the rat. The following results were found: 1, in both tumor types, vascularization is developed equally well; 2, both in the differentiated and in the undifferentiated carcinomas, the number of proliferating tumor cells decreases with increasing distance from the capillaries; at a distance of about 80 microns, there is no longer any noteworthy tumor cell proliferation; 3, the differentiated and undifferentiated carcinomas differ both in the level of the mitosis index and 3H-thymidine labeling index as well as in their local proliferation pattern despite equal vascu…

The stress relaxation behaviour after compression yielding of two semicrystalline polymers, a low density polyethylene and an isotactic polypropylene, is investigated. Data taken at several strains, reached with different sample loading rates, are considered. Master curves are obtained by means of dimensionless stress and time measures, similar to those recently adopted for some amorphous polymers.
Virtual photons and electrodisintegration of the deuteron
1982
The validity of the virtual photon concept in the analysis of deuteron electrodisintegration for equivalent photon energies up to 300 MeV is investigated. The deuteron and the final state interaction are described by the consistent nonrelativistic calculation of Fabian and Arenhoevel neglecting the effects of meson exchange currents and isobar configurations. We find that in well defined kinematic domains the use of the virtual photon concept is justified in extracting photodisintegration cross sections.
Die Schmieghyperebenen an die Veronese-Mannigfaltigkeit bei Beliebiger Charakteristik
1982
By means of linear algebra a base-free definition of a Veronese variety V(n,r) is given and also an illuminating description of its osculating primes from which can be deduced in a general form and without difficulty the phenomena of degeneracy in case of small characteristics. (Instance best known: For characteristic 2 all tangents of a conic are confluent.) The last section investigates special problems for the V(1,r) in characteristic p: So the osculating primes of a V(1,p) intersect its node in a V(1,p-2). Furthermore it becomes clearer why for 2<r<¦K¦−1 no elation can fix a V(1,r) (in case of a perfect field).
Effects of motor cortex removal on circling behaviour.
1982
AbstractChemical stimulation of the dopaminergic nigro-striatal system induces circling behaviour also in animals in which an extensive telencephalic lesion has been performed. In order to avoid the effects linked to chemical stimulation, we have studied the circling behaviour means of electrical stimulation of the caudate nucleus in chronic cats with cortical lesions. The role of the motor cortex on the circling behaviour is emphasized.
P n-values of short-lived Sr, Y, Ba and La precursors
1982
Beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities (Pn) of short-lived Sr, Y, Ba and La precursors were measured. As expected from systematics, but in disagreement with recent data from the SOLIS-group, only small Pn -values were obtained.
Dynamic stability of plane elastic frames
1982
Abstract The stability of plane elastic frames subjected to a vertical foundation motion of the stationary, ergodic type is investigated. The equations of motion are obtained in modal co-ordinates, with account taken of many modes of vibration. The problem is subsequently reduced to the study of only the first mode of vibration. By considering a particular case, the stability domains are sketched as functions of the variation of the rigidities of the beam-column connecting joints and as functions of the number of stories.
Interaction of polyribosomal components and polyribonucleotides with microtubule proteins
1982
To demonstrate the affinity of RNA-containing polyribosomal components (isolated from L5178y cells) to microtubules, microtubule protein was attached to an insoluble matrix. In contrast to ribosomes, poly(A) (+) mRNA and poly(A)-RNP were found to bind to the matrix. Using synthetic polyribonucleotides, no significant differences in the binding properties of single- and double stranded polymers of different base composition to microtubule protein were observed. However, binding is dependent on the size of the polymer; a minimal chain length of 12 nucleotide units is required.

Syntheses of Sterically Hindered Peptides and Depsipeptides by Means of an Ac…

Phase distribution chromatography (PDC) is demonstrated to be a powerful method for the correct determination of narrow molecular weight distributions. This is shown by comparing the molecular weight distributions (MWD) of polystyrenes obtained from PDC measurements with those obtained by Baker-Williams fractionation and by gel permeation chromatography. Four problems are formulated and analyzed which are closely connected with the calculation of the MWD from a measured PDC-elution curve at temperatures below the theta point of the system. Thus, the theory of PDC outlined previously is tested.

Gas chromatographic study of acetyl derivates of chlorinated guaiacols
1982
The gas chromatography of acetyl derivatives of guaiacol and all chlorinated guaiacols has been studied on SE-30, OV-351 and Carbowax 20M capillary columns. The retention order and relative retention times under isotermal and temperature-programmed conditions are discussed. Different retention times for all mono- and dichloro compounds have been observed on the SE-30 column. However, all trichloroguaiacol isomers were separated only on polar columns. The best overall temperature-programmed separations have been achieved on an SE-30 capillary column.
Mass spectra of chlorinated esters: 2—Methyl mono- and dichlorobutanoates
1982
The mass spectral fragmentations of methyl mono- and dichlorobutanates have been studied. Deutrium labelling and metastable ion analysis were used to elucidate the fragmentation mechanisms. The molecular ion peaks of the esters are weak and show only in the spectra of the monochloro isomers. A McLafferty rearrangement gives the base peaks in the spectra of methyl 2-chloro-, 4-chloro- and 4,4-dichlorobutanoate; α-cleavage, [COOCH3]+, in methyl 2,2- and 2,4-dichlorobutanoate; [MCl]+, in methyl 3-chlorobutanoate; [MClHCl]+, in methyl 3,4-dichlorobutanoate; [MClCH2CO]+, in methyl 3,3-dichlorobutanoate and [MClCOOCH3]+˙, in methyl erythro- and threo-2,3-dichlorobutanoate. Fecal Blood Loss in Patients With Colonic Polyps: A Comparison of Measurements With 51Chromium-Labeled Erythrocytes and With the Haemoccult Test
1982
Abstract The quantitative determinations of fecal daily blood loss after intravenous administration of 51Cr-labeled erythrocytes in 44 patients with colonic polyps and in 11 controls were compared with the results of the daily performed Haemoccult test without dietary restrictions. A total of 642 stool specimens was analyzed for 51Cr loss and the Haemoccult test. The mean fecal daily blood loss in the 34 patients with adenomatous polyps of the descending colon and rectosigmoid was 1.36 ± 0.14 ml/day (mean ± SEM), in the 10 patients with polyps of the ascending and transverse colon it was 1.28 ± 0.31 ml/day, and in the 11 controls 0.62 ± 0.07 ml/day. There was no positive Haemoccult test in …
The Halfmoon Sign
1982
SUMMARY The halfmoon-sign is described. It consists of typically shaped fragments seen on the lateral view of the elbow in the area around the fossa radialis. With rare exceptions, the halfmoon sign is indicative of fracture of the distal humerus in the coronal plane, most commonly involving the capitulum humeri.
1H-nmr studies of polyoxyethylene-bound homo-oligo-L-methionines
1982
The use of 1H-nmr spectroscopy is demonstrated to be a useful analytical method to characterize the structure of synthetic peptides attached to soluble, macromolecular polyoxyethylene (POE) supports in the liquid-phase method (LPM) of peptide synthesis. We report an extensive 360-MHz 1H-nmr study of POE-bound homo-oligo-L-methionine peptides. A combination of high field and selective saturation or Redfield pulse methods allows resolution of individual backbone NH and α-CH resonances of dilute peptides in the presence of strong resonances from macromolecular POE and/or protonated solvents. The nmr spectra for the POE-bound peptides in CDCl3 are qualitatively similar to those of the low-molec…

1982
Glutamate (Glut), acetylcholine (ACh) and dopamine (DA) were iontophoretically applied on cat claustral neurons. Glut did not affect all the neurons; ACh had both excitatory and inhibitory effects, while DA was prevalently inhibitory. An analysis was made of the time-course of excitatory and inhibitory responses on the basis of the mean firing rate variations during and after ACh and DA release. Three types of responses are described for each drug: short lasting inhibition, long lasting inhibition and long lasting excitation. The experimental data were statistically elaborated. The effects of ACh and of DA were compared with those of activation obtained by sensorial peripheric and thalamic …

Changes in gallbladder motor function during the female cycle — a risk factor leading to gallstone formation?
1982
The gallbladder volume of eight women with stable cycles was determined by sonography. Furthermore, gallbladder contraction — following an orally administered fatty meal and the spontaneous refilling of the empty gallbladder — was quantitatively examined. The formula of a rotation ellipsoid, which has been proven to be adequately accurate in in vitro studies, was used for calculating the gallbladder volume. In the gestagen phase (21st or 22nd day) the intraindividual studies showed greater fasting volumes, higher residual volumes after contraction, slower gallbladder emptying, and retarded refilling of the empty gallbladder as compared to the estrogen phase (12th or 13th day). The hormonall…
VIOLURATO COMPLEXES OF Cr(III). SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION. PROTONATION-DEPROTONATION EQUILIBRIA OF THE COORDINATED LIGANDS. EVIDENCE OF THE COOR…
1982
Abstract The formation of violurato complexes of Cr(III) has been studied in aqueous solution. Two compounds, [Cr(H2V)3].5H2O and Na[Cr(H2V)2(OH)2].4H2O have been synthesized and characterized. [Cr(H2V)3] behaves in aqueous solution as a triprotic acid but it can also add a proton yielding [Cr(H2V)2(H3V)]+. The acidity constants of this species have been determined: pKa1 =3.32, pKa2 =4.25, pKa3 =4.83 and pKa4 =6.99 (25°C, 0.1 M NaC1O4). [Cr(H2V)2(OH)2]− undergoes a deprotonation of the two H2V− ligands and a protonation of the hydroxo ligands. The acidity constants of [Cr(H2V)2(H2O)2]+ have been also determined: pKa1 =3.5, pKa2 =4.6, pKa3 =7.1 and pKa4 =9.2 (25°C, 0.1 M NaC1O4). The coordin…

Studies on the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Part IX. Action ofN,N-dimethylformamide dimethylacetal on some oximino-β-dicarbonyl compounds
1982
3-Oximino-2,4-pentanedione (1) and ethyl 2-oximino-3-oxobutanoate (6) reacted with N,N-dimethylformamide dimethylacetal (DFDA) to give 1,7-bisdimethylamino-3,5-dioxo-4-methoximinohepta-1,6-diene (4) and ethyl 5-dimethylamino-2-methoximino-3-oxo-4-pentenoate (8), respectively. When compounds 4 and 8 were treated with hydrazine hydrate, they gave O-methyldipyrazol-3(5)-ylketoxime (5) and ethyl 2-methoximino-3(5)-pyrazolylethanoate (9) together with its corresponding hydrazide 10, respectively. Upon action of DFDA on 3-oximino-2,4-pentanedione (1) at -20° an explosive crystalline product was obtained. On the other hand, the reaction of 3-acetoximino-2,4-pentanedione (11) with DFDA at -20° affo…
The elastic scattering of 25MeV α-particles and neutron shell effects in the A = 50 TO A = 93 mass region
1982
Abstract Experimental elastic scattering angular distributions of 25 MeV α-particles scattered from 28 nuclei ranging from 50Cr to 93Nb have been measured and then analysed in terms of a regular optical model with standard Woods-Saxon geometries for both the real and imaginary potentials. The experimental distributions are well fitted over the whole angular range from 5° to 175° c.m. by the predictions, provided that a smaller than normal diffuseness is used for the imaginary potentials. The usual families of potentials with volume integrals differing by approximately 100 MeV · fm3 are found. The family with volume integral ranging from 540 to 420 MeV· fm3 over the nuclei studied has been c…

1982
The additivity of chloro and hydroxy substituent effects on the formyl proton spin-spin coupling constants with the meta ring proton, 5J(HH), has been tested with 15 chlorinated benzaldehydes and hydroxybenzaldehydes by multiple linear regression analysis. No general additivity rule was detected with whole data. Using benzaldehyde as the reference substance, a good correlation was achieved for p-hydroxybenzaldehydes. The same reference compound was not suitable for o-hydroxy derivatives; a much better correlation was observed using o-hydroxybenzaldehyde as a reference compound in the latter case.
Increased respiratory burst activity of monocytes and polymorphonuclear leukocytes in psoriasis.
1982
SUMMARY We studied the respiratory burst activity of peripheral blood monocytes and polymorphonu clear leukocytes (PMN) in eleven patients with psoriasis and eleven healthy controls, using zymosan particles to activate the phagocytes in vitro. The activation of the phagocytes was measured in a luminol-enhanced chemiluminescence (CL) assay. We found a significantly higher respiratory burst activity of both monocytes and PMN in patients with psoriasis compared with the control subjects. The percentages of monocytes in psoriatics did not differ from those of the controls. The higher amount of zymosan-induced CL activity generated in the patient group was unrelated to the age of the individual.…

The synthesis and phase behaviour of a series of polymers having liquid crystalline sidechains and a poly(acrylic acid) backbone are described. These polymers show a dependence of the phase transition temperatures on molecular weight. In copolymers of two liquid crystalline acrylic esters, induced smectic phases occur. A comparison of the phase transitions of the different polyacrylates, with those of liquid crystalline polymethacrylates and polysiloxanes, published elsewhere, establishes that the spacer group achieves partial “decoupling” of liquid crystalline and polymer properties.
Anomale röntgenstreuung zur erforschung makromolekularer strukturen
1982
The possibilities of anomalous X-ray scattering for the investigation of semi- or noncrystalline macromolecular structures are discussed on the grounds of the first successful measurements of anomalous scattering of iron in dissolved hemoglobin. As anomalous scattering of this kind of material is limited to the near vicinity of the X-ray absorption edges, the use of synchrotron radiation appears to be obligatory. The anomalous dispersion of the atomic form factors slightly increases with the atomic number. Anomalous dispersion is nearly doubled when going from the K-absorption edge to the LIII-absorption edge and from there to the Mv- absorption edge. Therefore, the use of anomalous dispers…
Quantitative analyse der selbstassoziation von hämoglobinmolekülen anhand der konzentrationsabhängigkeit der spektren
1982
The dependence of the spectrum of oxygenated hemoglobin (Hb) on the Hb concentration was measured and it was found that Hb solutions do not obey Lambert-Beer's law. The absorption coefficient depends clearly on the Hb concentration. As all external parameters were kept constant except Hb concentration, the only way to explain our result is to assume that Hb molecules undergo self association and that this self association is reflected in the behaviour of the absorption coefficient. To get parameters which are suited to describe the self association of Hb molecules, two models were used. The first model is based on the idea that Hb associates according to the following equation: Hb + Hb ⇌ (H…
Evidence for an intra- and extraplastidic pre-chorismate pathway.
1982
Pea plants grown under different conditions of cultivation, and eight different plant species with variegated leaves were used to study the intracellular localization of shikimate oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.25), the marker enzyme of the pre-chorismate pathway. The two series of experiments indicated an intra-and an extraplastidic compartimentalization of the enzyme, and both enzyme activities are regulated differentially. While the extraplastidic activity is permanently demonstrable, the intraplastidic activity is subject to the plants' developmental state and also depends on both illumination and fertilization.
