Cost-effectiveness analysis of an in-service teacher training system: Logos II in Brazil
1981
Banque mondialeThis series of unreferred discussion papers is intended to provide an initial circulation of work prepared under the auspices of the Populationand Human Resources Division.Discussion Paper No. 81-40; Logos II is an in-service training system to upgrade unqualified teachers in Brazil (estimated to be 200,000). It uses a package of 203 teaching booklets, covering. the entire curriculum from fifth to eleventh grades. Teachers get the booklets in teaching centers) strategically located and run by a supervisor who tests systematically that the previous booklet has been adequately mastered by the teacher before giving the following one. Furthermore, the supervisor provides oral tea…
Effect of Computed Tomography on Diagnosis of Neurological Disease
1981
Computed tomography is generally considered to be the most reliable and, indeed, the definitive diagnostic technique for demonstration of brain tumors. Approximately 98% of intracra-nial lesions are detected with CT. However, extremely high sensitivity is not the only advantage of CT in diagnosis of intracranial tumors. Accuracy in determining histological type, visualization of anatomical relations to important brain structures, knowledge of the growth pattern, and evidence of space-occupying effects of the tumor are at least as important for the neurosurgeon. In effect, CT studies allow definition of the entire complex “intracranial space-occupying process” by means of a single procedure …
Porosity variation and swelling of cation exchangers
1981
Polystyrenesulfonic cation exchangers have been obtained from styrene‐divinylbenzene copolymers modified with organic solvents. The cation exchangers were characterized by varying porosity analogous to that of the parent copolymers. The porosity varied from zero to 0.45 and the specific surface area from zero to 350 m2/g; these changes were induced by drying the cation exchangers from poorly solvating solvents. The sorption degrees towards a model dye (methylene blue) from an aqueous solution reached a value up to unity and the pseudoequilibration time decreased with an increase in the sorption temperature. The sorption degrees of the dye from an acetone solution were lower and proportional…

Polymer-polymer interaction parameters in solvent/polymer/polymer ternary systems
1981
Abstract Empirical equations defining the relationships between b23 and χ23 interaction parameters for the ternary systems toluene (1)/poly(dimethylsiloxane), PDMS, (2)/polystyrene, PS, (3) and benzene (1)/PDMS(2)/PS(3) have been determined. The dependences of both interaction parameters on the mean molecular weights of the macromolecular components have also been studied. A single dependence of b23 (or χ23) upon the mean molecular weight is found when both polymeric components have intermediate to high molecular weights. However, that single dependence is not found when the molecular size of polymer (2) is low.
Diffuse solar radiation statistics for Italy
1981
Abstract In this paper diffuse radiation is correlated with usually measured or more easy computable quantities in order to have a larger number of data available for the various applications of solar energy. Here are used two types of correlation: (a) diffuse radiation as a function of global and extraterrestrial radiation; (b) diffuse radiation as a function of ralative sunshine and extraterrestrial radiation. On the basis of the above correlations, empirical equations have been proposed and their coefficients have been calculated by fitting the experimental data of three Italian stations. The degree of accuracy of the fit has been estimated by a coefficient introduced and called by us “r…

The muon magnetic moment
1981
Muon mass and muon magnetic moment are not calculabIe within the theory of Quantum Eiectrodynamics; they rather define the reference acaie in which masses and energies should be determined when muons are used to test QED or to search for anomalous muon coupiings which couid provide the "raison d'@tre" for the muon. Oniy the anomaious part of the muon magnetic moment experimentaily determined with remarkable precision I), can be oaIculated 2~" Theory and experiment agree preciseiy once corrections being appiied for hadronic and weak processes which poiiute the immaculated fieid of QED at high momentum transfers. Muon mass and muon magnetic moment are, in particular, needed for the interpreta…

Computed Tomography in Orbital Lesions
1981
Lesions in the orbits are characterized by unilateral or bilateral proptosis and/or disorders of ocular motion. Before the advent of computed tomography diagnosis was made on the basis of conventional radiological studies of the skull and the orbits as well as with ultrasonog-raphy, fluorescence angiography, phlebography of the ophthalmic vein, and arteriograms of the internal and external carotid arteries. The introduction of CT has brought about a correspondingdecline in the use of invasive procedures (Wende et al. 1977).
Los impresos científicos españoles de los siglos XV y XVI: inventario, bibliometría y thesaurus. Vol. I
1981

Experimental study of stress-relaxation behaviour of polycarbonate after yielding
1981
The viscoelastic behaviour of a bisphenol A polycarbonate after yielding is described by means of empirical superposition of coordinates along both time and stress axis, which allow collecting stress relaxation data, taken both in tension and in compression, into a master curve.
Metabolic Activation and Pharmacokinetics in Hazard Assessment of Halogenated Ethylenes
1981
Halogenated ethylenes play an important role in occupational and environmental medicine. Several attempts at toxicological evaluation of such compounds have been recently published (Maltoni 1977; Lee et al. 1978; Gehring et al. 1979; Kappus and Ottenwalder 1980; Henschler et al. 1980; Bolt 1980). The principal question is that of possible carcinogenicity. It is now clear that vinyl chloride (Maltoni 1977) and vinyl bromide (Bolt et al. 1979) are carcinogenic; some data also argue in favor of carcinogenicity of vinylidene chloride (Lee et al. 1978). Trichloroethylene (Henschler et al. 1980) and perchloroethylene (Bolt and Link 1980), according to present data, appear devoid of cancerogenic p…

Enamel Prism Patterns of European Hominoids — and Their Phylogenetical Aspects
1981
Everybody concerned with questions of taxonomy and phylogeny knows that a large part of information used to classify fossil vertebrates is derived from teeth. This comes from the reasoning that teeth are the best mineralized portions of the skeleton and thus usually also the best preserved remains. The best preserved portion of teeth is again the most highly mineralized — the enamel. That the enamel shows a so-called prism pattern, which differs markedly within mammals and also within the primates, is well known since Carter (1922) and Regan (1930) published articles concerning the variability of enamel prism patterns. These were for the first time described by Tomes in 1848. An intensive i…

TISSUE OXYGENATION AND TISSUE METABOLISM IN THE BRAIN CORTEX DURING PRONOUNCED ARTERIAL HYPOCAPNIA
1981
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the tissue oxygenation and tissue metabolism in the brain cortex during pronounced arterial hypocapnia. Acute arterial hypocapnia induced by hyperventilation leads to typical reactions in the circulation and the metabolism of the brain tissue. With a lowering of arterial CO2 tension, the cerebro-vascular resistance (CVR) increases resulting in a decrease of cerebral blood flow. The changes in CVR are a consequence of decreasing hydrogen ion and potassium ion concentrations in the perivascular space of the brain arterioles. The corresponding changes in the brain metabolism are characterized by elevated concentrations of lactate and pyruvate and an inc…
Interrelationships between electromyographic, mechanical, muscle structure and reflex time measurements in man.
1981
Reaction time (TRT) with its premotor (PMT) and motor time (MT) components, patellar reflex time (TRfT) with its latency (LAT) and motor time (RfMT) were studied together with isometric force production and relaxation time variables in one leg isometric knee extension. These variables were intercorrelated together with muscle biopsy variables taken from m. vastus lateralis. From these computations MT proved to demonstrate significant correlations to rate of isometric force development (RFD) (P less than 0.001), maximum force (P0) (P less than 0.001) and per cent distribution of ST fibers (P less than 0.001). It is speculated that these relationships are determined by the pattern of the moto…

The reaction of Ciona intestinalis L. (Tunicata) to subcuticular erythrocyte and protein injection
1981
Abstract Ciona intestinalis reacts to subcuticular injection of corpuscular or soluble antigens producing a capsule around the foreign material. The morphology and the histochemical composition of the injected area was examined. The time sequence of the reaction is characterized by a heightened non-specific secondary response.
UNIQUENESS OF PERIODIC SOLUTIONS OF THE LIENARD EQUATION
1981
This chapter analyzes the uniqueness of periodic solutions of the Lienard equation. It considers the Lienard equation = y − F ( x ) and y = − x where F (0) = 0 , F ( x ) ∈ Lip( R ). The chapter discusses the existence of periodic solutions. It highlights that the origin is the only stationary point of the system = y − F ( x ) and y = − x , and therefore all nontrivial periodic solutions must circle around the origin. The existence of at least one periodic solution is proved by constructing a Poincare–Bendixson domain. The chapter also emphasizes that to prove the uniqueness of periodic solutions, additional assumptions are also needed. In the literature there are numerous uniqueness results…

Erweiterter Cross-Over-Plan zur Beurteilung der Schmerzbeeinflussung
1981
