Alpha-1-antitrypsin-induced inhibition of complement-dependent phagocytosis.

1981

Abstract In a previous investigation, inhibition of complement-dependent rosette formation by alpha1-antitrypsin (α1-AT) was observed, and it was demonstrated that α1-AT interacts through its carbohydrate portion with C3 and its fragments. In the present study, the effect of α1-AT on the complement-receptor-mediated phagocytosis by human peripheral blood monocytes was examined. Purified α1-AT inhibited in a dose-dependent manner phagocytosis of C3-carrying yeast particles. Inhibition was selective, concerned only C3-receptor-mediated phagocytosis, neither Fc-receptor-mediated phagocytosis nor uptake of untreated yeast particles was blocked by α1-AT. It was demonstrated that α1-AT exerted it…

In-beam study of the 128, 130Xe nuclei

1981

Abstract The level structure of 128,130Xe has been studied in the (α, 2nγ) and (3He, 3nγ) reactions on enriched Te targets using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. For both nuclei the existing information about positive-parity level structure was enriched and many new negative-parity two-quasiparticle states were observed. Isomeric states with the half-lives of 63 ± 12 ns in 128 Xe and 4.8 ± 0.5 ns in 130 Xe were found. For collective positive-parity states the interacting boson model, and calculations based on Bohr hamiltonian were compared with the experimental data.

Magnetic properties of some rare‐earth magnesium compounds RMg2

1981

The magnetic properties of the compounds PrMg2, NdMg2, DyMg2, and ErMg2 were studied by means of neutron diffraction at various temperatures. All these compounds give rise to ferromagnetic ordering. The absolute values of the magnetic moments in the magnetically ordered state are lower than the free‐ion values. Inelastic neutron scattering at several temperatures was studied in PrMg2 and NdMg2. Analysis of the scattering data in conjunction with the results of specific‐heat and magnetization measurements shows that PrMg2 is an induced‐moment system (G3 ground state), where quadrupolar effects carry a large weight in determining the magnetic properties. The values found for the crystal‐field…

Lack of association between HLA specificities and Wilms' tumour.

1981

HLA antigen distribution was determined in thirty patients with Wilms' tumour, and their frequencies compared with those of an ethnically matched control population. No statistically significant association was found between any single HLA antigen and Wilms' tumour disease. The value of prospective HLA typing studies, with special respect to genetic aspects, histopathological subgrouping and survival rate of Wilm's tumour patients is discussed.

Farkas-Minkowski systems in semi-infinite programming

1981

The Farkas-Minkowski systems are characterized through a convex cone associated to the system, and some sufficient conditions are given that guarantee the mentioned property. The role of such systems in semi-infinite programming is studied in the linear case by means of the duality, and, in the nonlinear case, in connection with optimality conditions. In the last case the property appears as a constraint qualification.

Katalysatoren beim thermischen Abbau von Polymeren, 1. Über den katalytischen Abbau von Polypivalolacton

1981

The ability of different metal oxides and acetates to catalyze the thermal degradation of poly(pivalolactone) into cyclic oligomers has been investigated. Magnesium oxide was found to be the most active catalyst which converts poly(pivalolactone) completely into oligomers within less than two hours at 547 K. The influence of temperature and catalyst concentration and the distribution of cyclic oligomers is discussed.

On the decay of compound nuclei following alpha-particle and12C induced reactions

1981

Multiple coincidence rates have been measured using a detector system consisting of a Ge(Li) spectrometer and eight NaI(Tl) or eight liquid scintillators. Reactions induced byα-particles with energies of 51–55 MeV and 118 MeV12C ions are studied. The data are analysed to give the first and second central moments of the distribution of the number ofγ-rays feeding individual levels in the final nuclei. When these numbers are compared to spin distributions calculated with the statistical model code GROGI the relative importance of dipole and quadrupole deexcitation modes can be ascertained. In particular, in the122Te(α, 4n)122Xe reaction theγ-decay prior to the entry into the ground band is we…

Breather contributions to the dynamical form factors of the Sine-Gordon systems CsNiF3 and (CH3)4NMnCl3 (TMMC)

1981

Abstract Sine-Gordon breather contributions to S(q, ω) for CsNiF3 explain almost all of the available experimental data if, but only if, there is a restriction on the largest breather sizes. Quantum features may play a significant role in any comparison with experimental data. The classical results extend to TMMC.

Analysis of parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-nucleus scattering

1981

Parity violating asymmetries in elastic electron scattering on nuclei with arbitrary spin and isospin are considered in detail, extending our previous work on this matter [1]. Examples are given for the target nuclei12C,40Ca,208Pb,3H,3He,41Ca,209Bi. Several ways of extracting information on the structure of weak neutral current couplings are presented. Besides, as a further possibility to check the validity of the standard gauge model [2] at intermediate energies, the chances to distinguish among different classes of gauge models are discussed.

Exchange currents in electric transitions and the rle of siegert's theorem: A case study in deuteron photodisintegration

1981

The size of exchange corrections to electric transitions is investigated for deuteron photodisintegration. Large contributions are found in El transitions, which become dominant above 40 MeV. Most of them are already included by using Siegert's theorem together with classical one-body operators. Higher multipoles are only little affected except for rather high energies. The Born approximation for the final states gives in general a poor description.

Digitiform Sensilla on the Maxillar Palp of Coleoptera

1981

The fine structure of the digitiform sensilla on the distal segment of the maxillar palps of Tenebrio and Dermestes is described. Each sensillum is associated with a single sensory cell and three enveloping cells, which enclose two receptor lymph cavities. The inner receptor lymph cavity of both species shows a different structural feature. Branches of the outer dendritic segments, which contain numerous microtubules, run to the tip of the hairshaft. A dendritic sheath extends to the apex of the peg. The hairshaft possesses a second canal, which is free of dendrites. The poreless hairshaft is inserted in a cuticular canal; the longer distal part of the shaft is positioned in a narrow superf…

Dry years and their relationship to crop production in Sri Lanka

1981

Drought is a distinct agroclimatological hazard with far reaching consequences upon crop production. Among them, famines are regarded the most serious effects of climatological drought. Although there is no doubt about the principally valid relationship between drought and production losses it seems more problematic how this relationship can be proved statistically. In this paper annual rainfall data and production figures of the three major crops of Sri Lanka, rice (paddy), tea and rubber, are correlated, but only partially a true relationship between dry years and production losses could be observed. Reason for this may be the moderate degree of annual drought. From the results shown, the…

The recovery after bending of polycarbonate sheets

1981

The recovery after bending has been extensively studied for metal sheets. The data presented in this work show that in the case of polymeric materials viscoelastic effects play a very important role. In particular the influence of deformation rate, the time the sample is held under load and the recovery time is analysed. A master curve is obtained by proper modification of a recent analysis developed for metal sheets.

Conservation of optical purity of amino acids: a principal problem in biochemical and proto-biochemical systems.

1981

Dor L-amino acids, regardless of their state (peptide-bound or free, in the solid state or in aqueous solution), tend to racemize. In a living cell this racemization is usually compensated by specific degradation and replacement of the unwanted polypeptides that contain the wrong enantiomers. But a few long-lived proteins that are synthesized at or near birth are never replaced. Well investigated is the racemization of L-aspartic acid at a rate of 0.1 to 1.14 per cent per year in proteins from lenses and dentine. Increased racemization of eye lens proteins has been related to a form of human eye disease known as brunescent cataracts. Also quite well investigated is the racemization of amino…

Density functional calculation of stopping power of an electron gas for slow ions

1981

Abstract We describe the first calculation of the stopping power of an electron gas for slow ions using the density-functional formalism. We evaluate the nonlinear self-consistent potential around the ion and from scattering theory determine the energy loss directly. Comparison with the results of linear theory is made.

Polyamides 3 containing constant and definite numbers of oxyethylene units were prepared by condensation polymerization of suitable diamines and diesters, both of which containing oxyethylene units. The polymer structure was determined by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Almost all polymers are crystals melting at ≈ 40°C and show a complexation ability towards alkalimetal cations. It was also found that diesters containing oxyethylene units show a higher condensation rate than alkylene diesters, which is explained by an inductive effect of the ether oxygene. However, no remarkable difference in the condensation rate was found between diamines containing oxyethylene units and the corresponding al…
