Echocardiography in assessing acute pulmonary hypertension due to pulmonary embolism.

1980

Eighteen patients with acute pulmonary embolism were studied with right heart catheterization and M mode echocardiography. No patient had evidence of preexisting cardiopulmonary disease; pulmonary embolism was documented with pulmonary angiography. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure correlated with the angiographic severity index of embolic obstruction (r = 0.61, p 2 , p 2 ) and in 5 patients with acute pulmonary embolism and a mean normal pulmonary arterial pressure (10.9 ± 0.4 mm/m 2 ). For all measurements the index size of the right pulmonary artery correlated with the mean pulmonary arterial pressure (r = 0.84, p

Esophageal transmural potential difference in patients with symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux.

1980

Esophageal electrical potential difference (PD) was studied in 9 patients with symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux and in 9 healthy control subjects. None of the patients revealed gross mucosal damage by radiography or endoscopy, but all of them showed positive acid perfusion studies. In the stomach and across the lower esophageal sphincter PD profiles were remarkably similar in patients and controls. Throughout the lower esophagus however, PD values were slightly higher in patients with symptomatic reflux than in healthy volunteers. These data are in contrast to a previous investigation, in which patients with reflux-induced gross mucosal damage revealed a decreased PD in the lower esophag…

Anaerobic threshold, skeletal muscle enzymes and fiber composition in young female cross-country skiers.

1980

Anaerobic threshold (AT) and maximum oxygen uptake (max VO2) were determined in 15 young female cross-country skiers, aged 15--20 years, during incremental bycycle ergometer exercise. Succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH), citrate synthase (CS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were analyzed biochemically and percentage of slow twitch fibres (%ST fibres, myosin adenosine triphosphatase staining) histochemically in muscle samples obtained from m. vastus lateralis. Max VO2 correlated significantly with anaerobic threshold in ml x kg-1 x min-1 (mlAT) but when AT was expressed in percent of max VO2 (%AT) the correlation was insignificant. Significant correlations were found be…

A time dependent RPA-theory for heavy ion reactions

1980

The time dependent Hartree Fock theory (TDHF) is generalized by incorporating 2p-2h correlations into the TDHF Slater determinant in order to improve the description of two-body observables. To this end a time dependent RPA theory (TDRPA) is formulated using the quasi boson approximation. The approach turns out to be readily applicable requiring only minor changes in the present time TDHF codes. The theory is exemplified by considering the spreading width of the fragment particle number in a nucleus-nucleus collision. The TDRPA states are furthermore used to formulate a scattering theory for heavy ion collisions which incorporates the quantum corrections of orderh2 by means of a gaussian pa…

Thin-layer chromatography of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid and its soil metabolites

1980

Abstract The thin-layer chromatography of 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 4-chloro- o -cresol and 3-methyl-5-chlorocatechol and their pentafluorobenzyl derivatives has been studied on silica gel as adsorbent with 19 solvent systems. The best separation of the individual components occurred with toluene-benzene-acetic acid (2:2:1). Chloroform-diethyl ether-toluene (1:1:1) was suitable for the group separation of the pentafluorobenzyl derivatives.

Small-angle x-ray scattering studies of melting

1980

The course of melting of melt-crystallized polyethylene fractions and of a poly(ethylene oxide)-polystyrene-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer has been followed by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). Changes in the intensity and shape of the SAXS curves indicated that both surface melting and melting over the full crystallite thickness (full-strand melting) take place. Full strand melting is the final, irreversible process. Comparison with an analytical model indicates that in the earlier stages of the irreversible, full-strand process the crystallites melt out randomly throughout the bulk. Later stages may occur by the simultaneous melting of a larger stack of crystallites.

Tetramethylditin complexes: A general method for the preparation of a class of compounds with an unusual tintin bond

1980

Abstract The preparation and physical and spectroscopic properties of eight compounds of the type Me4Sn2X2 (X  O2CR, S2CNR2, S2P(OR)2) are described, starting from Me4Sn2Cl2. The spectroscopic data indicate that X functions as an isobidentate ligand. The tintin coupling constants are extremely large (ca. 11–15 kHz), and can be correlated with the pKa values of the corresponding acids HX.

Endotheliotropic (hemolytic) nephroangiopathy and its various manifestation forms (thrombotic microangiopathy, primary malignant nephrosclerosis, hem…

1980

In hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) various lesion types in the kidneys are observed in childhood. These are designated as the “glomerular type=G type” (essentially identical with thrombotic microangiopathy), as “arterial type=A type” (essentially identical with primary malignant nephrosclerosis (PMN)) or as “mixed type=G/A type”. With reference to characteristic cases, the most important morphological findings are described. In adults, in whom other diagnostic terms are used besides HUS, the same nephropathological types are observed. In the two phases of life, there occurs in addition renal cortical necrosis in subtotal nephroangiothrombosis. The G type and A type also have a different cli…

Anchimerically Enhanced Homolyses, V. Fluoride Ion Catalysed Rearrangements of Benzyl 9-(Trimethylgermyl)-9-fluorenyl Ether The thermal rearrangement (homolysis) of the germanium compound 1d into 4d is considerably slower than that of the analogous Si compound 1c. Thus, a correlation is suggested between the velocity of the rearrangement and the strength of the new bond to oxygen. The rearrangement 1d4d is also induced by fluoride ions at room temperature.

Polymer 11 with the 14C-labelled main chain was fractionated by precipitation. The η-M-relation determined by measurements of unlabelled polymers in the ultracentrifuge for comparison was used to establish the viscosimetrically determined molecular weights of the labelled fractions. After intravenous application of aqueous solutions of the polymer in rats the excretion rate up to 72 h after treatment was ascertained to ca. 50%; the concentration in the blood serum was found to be strikingly high. Anti H-2Dd alloreactivity mediated by herpes-simplex-virus specific cytotoxic H-2k T lymphocytes is associated with H-2Dk.

1980

Herpes-simplex-virus (HSV) specific, H-2k-restricted, immune cytotoxic T lymphocytes also lyse noninfected H-2d target cells. Genetic mapping studies revealed that HSV-specific Dk-restricted CTL cross-react with allogeneic targets expressing Dd alloantigens. Cold target inhibition experiments indicate that only a minority of HSV-specific CTL mediate cross-reactive cytolysis. The data give an example of where the phenomenon of H-2-restricted versus nonrestricted responsiveness is not due to distinct subsets of T cells but solely depends on the antigenic determinants recognized.

Mesenterico-caval shunt in rats

1980

A microsurgical technique for mesenterico-caval shunting in the rat is described. The method results in a partial blood drainage from the upper abdominal content whereas the blood of the mesenteric vein is shunted to the inferior caval vein. Controls were undertaken after 1 and 3 weeks, either visually or radiologically. Twenty-two of 26 surviving animals showed patency of the shunt. All animals had undisturbed blood supply to the portal stump.

Connective tissue of “fast” and “slow” skeletal muscle in rats…effects of endurance training

1980

The connective tissue of two skeletal muscles having different contractile properties was investigated in trained and untrained rats. The animals to be trained were put to run on a treadmill 5 days a week for 4 weeks. The "slow" m. soleus (MS) showed higher malate dehydrogenase activity but lower lactate dehydrogenase activity compared to the "fast" m. rectus femoris (MRF). When whole muscles were taken into account, the concentrations of both hydroxyproline and hexosamines were higher for MS compared to MRF. In the middle section of MS there were more hexosamines than in that of MRF, but no similar difference existed in hydroxyproline. The histochemical staining of collagen, however, sugge…

Can Sex Inversion Be Environmentally Induced?

1980

Among teleosts simultaneous hermaphroditism and spontaneous sex inversion (either protogyny or protandry) occur in many families that inhabit tropical and subtropical marine waters. The tooth-carp Rivulus marmoratus is unique among these in being self-fertilizing. Most studies are descriptive work on gonad histology and reproductive behavior. Experimental investigations are scanty and do not yet provide fruitful ideas that might help to understand what is occurring in a fish when it changes sex. Behavioral observations and experiments led to the hypothesis that in certain coral reef fish sex inversion may be under social control. The term sex inversion requires closer examination in order t…

The effect of kinetin on the photosynthetic apparatus of Sinapis alba

1980

The influence of kinetin during the development of primary leaves of Sinapis alba was investigated. Kinetin treatment (6 ppm) induced an increase of dry weight, of soluble reducing sugars, soluble protein, chlorophylls, carotenoids and cytochrome f; a higher ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b, higher rates of CO2 fixation per fresh weight and higher activity of nitrite reductase, were also found. These effects are comparable with strong and blue light adaptations. On the other hand, the Hill activity with ferricyanide as the electron acceptor, the rates of CO2 fixation per chlorophyll, the ratios of chlorophyll to cytochrome f and of protein to chlorophyll did not change. Therefore we …

Polymerization of Lipid and Lysolipid Like Diacetylenes in Monolayers and Liposomes

1980

The bilayer type lipid membrane has a variety of important functions that are necessary in order to sustain life. A lot of these functions have been studied with artificial model membranes such as black lipid membranes (BLM) or liposomes. A great disadvantage of all these models is their instability — BLM for instance can only exist for minutes or hours and only under the presence of water. Therefore, it was the aim of this work to produce simple model membranes that can retain their structure under a variety of test conditions. The route chosen to obtain such membranes was through the polymerization of lipid and lysolipid like molecules in monolayers at the gas-water interface or in liposo…

Friessche Verschiebung vonortho- undpara-Methoxyphenylacetaten. Die Bildung von Ketoestern

1980

During theFries rearrangement ofo- andp-methoxy phenyl acetates with AlCl3 in nitromethane at 20°C substitution occurs mainly in thep-position of the phenolic residue to yieldp-acylphenols. Larger quantities ofo-acylphenols are obtained only, if thisp-position is already substituted. Witho-methoxy phenyl acetates the substitution of the acid residue to yield ketoesters is observed as a side reaction. Those ketoesters are obtained as main products if TiCl4 is taken as a catalyst.
