Does catalase play a role in Adriamycin induced cardiotoxicity?

Summary Adriamycin causes an increase of lipid peroxidation in mouse cardiac homogenates that is dependent on the concentration of the antiblastic. The same phenomenon is not observed in the hearts of mice treated with an elevated dose of Adriamycin in which, conversely, an increase of the antioxidizing enzyme catalase was noticed. The significance of these findings is discussed with relationship to the hypothesis of an enhanced free radicals formation at the basis of Adriamycin induced cardiotoxicity.

Parity-violating asymmetry in elastic electron-nucleus scattering due to weak neutral currents

Parity-violating asymmetries are calculated for elastic scattering of electrons on nuclei of arbitrary spin and isospin. Possible dependences on nuclear-model input are shown to be weak. Elastic electron scattering at intermediate energies may become an important tool in studying the structure of hadronic weak neutral currents.

Self-consistent spin density functional calculations have been carried out for 3d transition metal impurities in aluminium. The width of the virtual level decreases as it moves away from the Fermi energy with increasing occupancy. The results are compared with recent XPS measurements.
The Influence of Acetylcholine and Choline on the Incorporation of Phosphate into Phospholipids of Etiolated Bean Hypocotyl Hooks

Summary Acetylcholine influenced the radiolabelling of phospholipids in vivo in etiolated hypocotyl tissue of dwarf beans in darkness. Under aerobic conditions the specific activity of the phospholipids was decreased and under anaerobic conditions increased. The biosynthesis of phospholipids was strongly increased by the bivalent cations calcium and manganese and decreased by 2,4-dinitrophenol, anaerobiosis, atropine and ascorbic acid. Magnesium stimulated the uptake of the radioactive phosphate but not the specific activity of the phospholipids. The results are discussed in comparison with the «phospholipid-effect» of acetylcholine in animal tissues.

Simple theoretical considerations indicate, that the integral intensity of the „longitudinal acoustic modes” (LAM) in the Raman spectrum ofn-alkanes should be independent of the chain length. The experiment in fact confirms this expectation. Using this property it becomes possible for polyethylene samples, to derive from the measured LAM-intensity the mass fraction of all-turns sequences contributing to this band. For solution crystallized samples this fraction coincides with the crystallinity, whereas in melt crystallized samples it generally turns out as smaller. Summary Plants of Sinapis alba were cultivated under high light (60 W m -2 PhAR) and low light (6 W m -2 PhAR) conditions. High light intensity during growth increased the stomatal frequency but there were only small changes in the length of the stomatal pore. High-light leaves had more than twice as many stomata per unit area as low-light leaves. The decrease of stomatal diffusive resistance in high-light leaves is primarily caused by the increase in stomatal density. An atypical variant of Ewing's sarcoma, located in the left hip of a nine-year-old girl, is discussed at optical, histochemical and electron microscopical level. The endothelial appearing cells seem to play a main role in its histogenesis. Tumoral cells of an undifferentiated blastemic nature show round nuclei and bright lucent cytoplasm, being organized in solid sheets or vascular-like profiles. Alkaline and acid phosphatases are very prominent in all tumoral cells, and some of them also show PAS positive material. Effects of pentobarbital on acetylcholine (ACh) release, force of contraction and nervous conduction were studied in isolated heart preparations and in cervical vagus nerves, respectively. 4-Aminopyridine and tetracaine were used as pharmacological tools to eludicate the mode of action of pentobarbital. 1. 4-Aminopyridine (10−4 M) markedly increased the overflow of ACh from the isolated chicken heart evoked by electrical stimulation (1–50 Hz, 1 ms, 40 V) of the cervical vagus nerves. This effect of 4-aminopyridine was highest at low frequencies of stimulation (+ 226% at 1 Hz) and declined with increasing frequencies to reach a minimum augmentation of 22% at 30 Hz. 2. The alteration (delta Z0) of transthoracic electrical impedance (TEI) during extracorporeal hemodialysis (EHD) was investigated in two Groups of patients with acute renal and acute respiratory failure, that differed with respect to the severity of respiratory insufficiency. Group I had moderate respiratory failure (FiO2 0.31 +/- 0.10, PaO2 84 +/- 14 mmHg), and Group II had severe respiratory failure (FiO2 0.75 +/- 0.17, PaO2 77 +/- 14 mmHg). There was a significant correlation between increase in TEI (delta Z0) and decrease in body weight (delta BW) in each individual patient, but the slope of regression lines was remarkably flattened in Group II. Transition operators for the collision of two clusters composed of an arbitrary number of charged and neutral particles are represented as a sum of pure Coulomb and Coulomb-modified short-range operators. Sandwiching this relation between the corresponding channel states, correct two-fragment scattering amplitudes are obtained by adapting the conventional two-body screening and renormalization procedure. The split-field magnet spectrometer at the CERN intersecting storage rings was used to measure, in p-p collisions at square root s=62 GeV, the inclusive momentum distribution of the charged particles produced in the same hemisphere as the leading proton (x>0.4). A new scaling variable was introduced in order to take into account baryon-number conservation effects in p-p interactions. It is shown that distributions in this variable are in good agreement with the momentum distribution of the hadrons produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation. Mouse liver cytosol epoxide hydrolase, known to be very active for certain alkene oxides, had a specific activity which was 2.1-, 11- and 160-fold lower than that of the microsomal epoxide hydrolase for the arene oxides 7-methylbenz[a]anthracene 5,6-oxide, benz[a]anthracene 5,6-oxide and phenanthrene 9,10-oxide, respectively. For benzo[a]pyrene 4,5-oxide no activity (less than 10 pmol product/mg protein/min) of cytoplasmic epoxide hydrolase was detectable. Experimental transient results in the nonlinear region are reported for a commercial polyisobutylene subjected to sudden imposition of either a constant shear stress or a constant electric field. Some steady-state results, eventually obtained in different types of experiments, are also considered. In both cases, a model analysis is presented that accounts for the nonlinear effects through changes in the free volume depending upon the applied stress. The good comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental results seems to indicate that the phenomenological approach advanced here is very promising.
Recall of common and uncommon words from pure and mixed lists

Recall of high- and low-frequency words in the conventional free recall paradigm was compared with recall of the same words when subjects were required to count backward before and after the presentation of each word. The addition of this distractor task was associated with a reduction in the high-frequency advantage otherwise found with pure lists containing only high- or low-frequency words. This finding is attributed to the disruption of organizational processes. In contrast, the low-frequency advantage found with conventional presentation of mixed lists, containing high- and low-frequency words, was not reduced by distraction. The effect of prednisolone and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs on PMNL (polymorphonuclear leucocytes) oxidative metabolism was quantified with a newly standardized NBT test, and it was investigated whether these effects correlate with phagocytosing capacity of PMNL. Prednisolone inhibits NBT reduction in dose dependency already at concentrations, which do not interfere with phagocytosis. Thus prednisolone dissociates phagocytosis and phagocytosis-associated oxidative metabolism. High doses of prednisolone also inhibit phagocytosis. The relationship among serum protein binding, kinetics of elimination, distribution, and anticoagulant activity of phenprocoumon was investigated in 25 selected outbred Sprague-Dawley rats which differed in the extent of serum protein binding of this drug. In addition, the serum protein binding of phenprocoumon was altered in inbred Lewis rats by continuous treatment with tolbutamide. This drug was found to displace phenprocoumon from serum proteins without affecting its intrinsic clearance. These children may require additional medical and emotional support from the school nurse. The effect the broken home may have upon a student has important implications for the physical and emotional health of today's youth. An awareness of this finding can provide school nursing personnel valuable insight in the assessment of students who visit the school nurse.

The role of Lyt 1+ T-cell-derived secondard CTL inducing factor allowed the cloning of alloreactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) by the limiting dilution approach. Several monoclonal cell lines were established in vitro. The lytic activity of some of the cell lines exceeded that of CTL from bulk cultures; that is, 50% of the target cells were lysed at an effector to target cell ratio of 0.04:1. The fine specificity of individual CTL clones is discussed.

Abstract An improved rapid, continuous solvent extraction system (“SISAK 2”) is described. The system is connected to a gas-jet installed at the Mainz reactor. It allows single or multistage chemical separations of liquid phases by means of specially designed centrifuges within ∼1 s per stage. The application of this system to study short-lived nuclides is exemplified for neutron-rich lanthanum and cerium isotopes produced by fission.

Abstract Guinea pig peritoneal macrophages were cultured for 24 h in the presence of two inhibitors of the biosynthesis of collagen-like molecules such as C1q : 10 -3 M 3,4-dehydroproline or 10 -4 M 2,2′-dipyridyl. Their Fc-receptor activity was measured by rosette formation, using sheep erythrocytes (E) coated with rabbit anti-sheep IgG (EA IgG ). The Fc-receptor activity was decreased by 40 to 70% of control cultures depending on the amount of IgG on the E. An eosinophil chemotactic factor (ECF) of low molecular weight can be generated and released from human polymorphonuclear neutrophils by the calcium ionophore, phagocytosis of zymosan particles, arachidonic acid, and phospholipase A2. Since the activation of cells by the ionophore and during the phagocytic event leads to phospholipid turnover, with the subsequent generation of arachidonic acid, it is reasonable that phospholipase A2 represents the common link for ECF production. Abstract The circuit of a powerful modulator is illustrated and a detailed description is given of the modulator construction and in particular of the components employed. The main parameters are: length of shaped pulse 2 μs; amplitude of the output voltage 30 kV; pulse repetition frequency 50–200 Hz. The compactness of this device, its comparatively low cost and its good performance, as illustrated in the attached photographs, make it suitable for use in accelerator engineering (microtron).
Nonlinear density dependence of the positron decay rate in helium

The decay rate of thermalized positrons in helium is calculated as a function of the fluid density, incorporating the multiple scattering of the positron off the atoms. The obtained nonlinearity agrees with experimental data outside the self-trapping region.
