Dynamics at the Temperature Crossover in Dilute Polymer Solutions Investigated by Neutron Spin-Echo Spectroscopy
1980
Applying ultrahigh-resolution neutron spin-echo spectroscopy the existence of a $q$-dependent temperature crossover in the dynamics of dilute polymer solutions was proved. It is associated with the transition from $\ensuremath{\theta}$ to good solvent conditions. At small momentum transfers $q$ a nearly stepwise increase of the reduced quasielastic linewidth versus the reduced temperature was observed. With increasing $q$, both the sharpness of the transition and the step height decrease.
Evidence for essential primary amino groups in a bacterial coupling factor F1ATPase.
1980
Abstract We have found that the binding of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate to 6 primary amino groups leads to the inactivation of the enzyme. A preferential reaction of pyridoxal-5′-phosphate with the α-subunits of this enzyme can be demonstrated. The reactivity of the amino groups is influenced by various effectors. In the presence of ATP the inhibition of the ATPase activity is noncompetitive.

Effects of an Earth-strength magnetic field on electrical activity of pineal cells
1980
Although magnetic fields can influence biological systems, including those of man and other vertebrates1–5, no central nervous structure has been identified that might be involved in their detection. From a theoretical point of view, the pineal organ might be such a structure for the following reasons: (1) It is involved in the regulation of circadian rhythms6 and is thus essential for migratory restlessness (‘Zugunruhe’)7. Orientation at that time can be altered by an artificial magnetic field (MF) with a direction differing by 90° from that of the Earth. Circadian rhythms can be inhibited from phase shifting by compensation of the Earth's MF and can be influenced by an artificial MF8. (2)…
Search for Superheavy Elements in theU238+U238Reaction
1980
A search was made for spontaneously fissioning superheavy elements in damped collisions of two uranium nuclei. Different techniques were applied covering the elements 108 to 118 and approx. =126, and a half-life range from 1 ms to more than 1 yr. No evidence for superheavy elements was found at upper cross-section limits of 10/sup -32/, 10/sup -33/, and 10/sup -35/ cm/sup 2/ for half-lives from 1 to 100 ms, 100 ms to 1 d, and 1 d to 1 yr, respectively.

Molecular weights of Trogamid T® were determined by ultracentrifugation, light-scattering, osmometry and viscometry, molecular weight distributions by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and five different fractionation methods. The separation efficiency of GPC with N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent was tested with three different types of gels, crosslinked polystyrene, porous glass and crosslinked poly(vinyl acetate), the last one yielding the best results. Solution fractionations show better results than precipitation methods. All fractionations gave far too small apparent non-uniformities. After correction according to the non-uniformities of the fractions the results corresponded to thos…
Influence of aging on the mechanical behavior of leg extensor muscles.
1980
Age dependence of the mechanical behavior of leg extensor muscle was investigated using vertical jumps with and without a stretch-shortening cycle on the force-platform. A total 226 subjects (113 females and 113 males) ranging in age from 4--73 years were examined. The results indicated in general that performance in males was better than that in females. This difference was reduced when body weight was taken into consideration. The peak performance of the various parameters, such as average force, height of rise of center of gravity, net impulse, and also the average power output, was reached in both sexes between the ages of 20 and 30 years. For example, the average vertical force in squa…

Numerische Lösung gewöhnlicher Differentialgleichungen mit Splinefunktionen
1980
Multi-step metabolic activation of benzene. Effect of superoxide dismutase on covalent binding to microsomal macromolecules, and identification of gl…
1980
Abstract Incubation of [ 14 C]benzene or [ 14 C]phenol with liver microsomes from untreated rats, in the presence of a NADPH-generating system, gave rise to irreversible binding of metabolites to microsomal macromolecules. For both substrates this binding was inhibited by more than 50% by addition of superoxide dismutase to the incubation mixtures. The decrease in binding was compensated for by accumulation of [ 14 C]hydroquinone, indicating superoxide-mediated oxidation of hydroquinone as one step in the activation of benzene to metabolites binding to microsomal macromolecules. Since our previous work had shown that binding occurred mainly with protein rather than ribonucleic acid and was …

The Influence of Insulin on Local Amyloidosis of the Islets of Langerhans and Insulinoma
1980
Summary Amyloid-containing islets of Langerhans from the pancreas of 75 diabetics and one case of an amyloid-containing insulinoma were investigated. By light and electron microscopy, amyloid deposits were observed between the B cells and adjacent capillaries. The cytoplasm of B cells and extracellular amyloid display immunohistological binding of anti-insulin antibody. Correspondingly, ferritin-labeled anti-insulin antibody was found by electron microscopy on and between the amyloid fibrils. Insulin or proinsulin (or a protein closely related to insulin) thus appears to be a.component of the protein which constitutes the amyloid. The molecular weight and mode of deposition of this form of …
Herpes-Simplex-virus-specific, H-2Dk-restricted T lymphocytes bear receptors for H-2Dd alloantigen.
1980
Cytotoxic T lymphocytes generated in the course of an HSV-infection of CBA (H-2k) mice not only lyse syngeneic, virus-infected target cells but also cross-react with noninfected taraget cells expressing the Dd alloantigen. On the effector cell level, this alloreactivity is mediated by virus-specific CTL's that are restricted to H-2Dk determinants. On the prekiller cell level, the anti-HSV-reactive T cells exhibiting cross-reactivity for Dd alloantigen could be positively selected on H-2d spleen-cell monolayers. After differentiation into cytolytic effector cells, target cells expressing Dd alloantigens and syngeneic HSV-infected target were lysed with equal efficiency. The results imply tha…

Myxoid lipoadenorna of the parathyroid gland
1980
A myxoid lipoadenoma of the parathyroid gland causing primary hyperparathyroidism is reported. The very rare and histologically unusual tumor consists of an epithelial component which is combined with a stromal component in a characteristic way. Slender, irregularly branched trabeculae which mainly consist of chief cells as well as a few oxyphil cells are found as epithelial component. The predominantly myxomatous and only focally lipomatous stromal component is interpreted as an integrated tumor component of the lipoadenoma which is derived from the parathyroid adipose tissue.

Morphology of melt-crystallized linear polyethylene fractions and its dependence on molecular weight and crystallization temperature
1980
Replicas and thin-section electron microscopic studies were made of fractions of linear polyethylene covering the molecular weight range 2.78 × 104 to 6.0 × 106 for a variety of crystallizing conditions. Lamellar crystallites were found under all circumstances; and the supermolecular structure, or crystalline morphology, is in agreement with that previously reported from an analysis of the small-angle light-scattering patterns of the same samples under similar crystallization conditions. Details of the crystalline microstructure are also described, which range from truncated hollow pyramids which degenerate as the molecular weight or the undercooling are increased. From these results, it is…

Grades of atypia in tubular and villous adenomas of the human colon. An electron microscopic study.
1980
Of a total of 544 tubular, villous and tubulo-villous adenomas of the human colon which were investigated by light microscopy, six tubular and six villous adenomas were examined under the electron microscope. It was shown that the two types of adenoma differ in their tissue architecture, but not in their cytological appearance. Different grades of epithelial atypia occur in both types of adenoma. These are designated as grades I to III, correspond to mild, moderate and severe atypia respectively. Whereas adenoma cells with atypia grade I clearly show a cytological relationship with crypt epithelia of the normal colonic mucosa under the electron microscope, adenoma cells with atypia grade II…
Blocking sets and partial spreads in finite projective spaces
1980
A t-blocking set in the finite projective space PG(d, q) with d≥t+1 is a set $$\mathfrak{B}$$ of points such that any (d−t)-dimensional subspace is incident with a point of $$\mathfrak{B}$$ and no t-dimensional subspace is contained in $$\mathfrak{B}$$ . It is shown that | $$\mathfrak{B}$$ |≥q t +...+1+q t−1√q and the examples of minimal cardinality are characterized. Using this result it is possible to prove upper and lower bounds for the cardinality of partial t-spreads in PG(d, q). Finally, examples of blocking sets and maximal partial spreads are given.
The fragmentation of 5- and 3-substituted thiophene-2-carboxamides under electron impact
1980
The 70 eV electron impact mass spectra of twelve 5- and 3-substituted thiophene-2-carboxamides are discussed with the aid of exact mass measurements and labelling experiments. All mass spectra exhibit pronounced molecular ions. Some isomeric 5- and 3-substituted title compounds can be differentiated by mass spectrometry. The fragmentation is influenced by a strong ‘ortho-effect’ which activates the NH3 elimination. In the other cases the most important fragmentation is NH2˙ loss, followed by CO elimination.

Periodic and Nil Polynomials in Rings
1980
Let R be an associative ring and f(x1,…, xd) a polynomial in noncommuting variables. We say that f is periodic or nil in R if for all r1,…, rd ∈ R we have that f(r1,…, rd) is periodic, respectively nilpotent (recall that a ∈ R is periodic if for some integer ).
Über die Verbreitung von Flavonoiden bei pleurokarpen Laubmoosen II. Apigenin and Apigenin-7-rhamnoglucosid bei Pleurozium schreberi (Willd.) Mitt.
1980
Summary 12 species of pleurocarpous mosses have been investigated as to their content of flavonoids. Flavonoid tests on 11 species have given negative results. Only one species, Pleurozium schreberi , contains three flavonoids. They were purified by means of paper chromatography. Two of them are by chromatography, acid hydrolysis and absorption spectrum identical with apigenin and apigenin-7-rhamnoglucoside. The third flavonoid is as yet unidentified. Qualitative hydrolysis yields apigenin. The chemotaxonomic importance of the results is briefly discussed.

Liver diseases and hepatitis B virus antigens and antibodies in chronic HBsAg carriers in childhood
1980
Liver biopsies were obtained from 109 children who had been chronic carriers of HBsAg for more than 6 months. The specimens were examined for the presen Ice of intracellular HBsAg, HBcAg and HBeAg by direct immunofluorescence. Sera were tested for HBeAg, virus B specific DNA polymerase, anti-HBs, anti-HBe and anti-HBc. On the basis of accepted histological criteria we found chronic active hepatitis (CAH) in 56 and chronic persistent hepatitis (CPH) in 19 children. 15 cases had minimal changes (minimal hepatitis, MH) and 19 normal liver tissue (healthy HBsAg carriers, HC). Children with CAH and CPH had HBeAg, DNA polymerase and anti-HBc in their serum. HBcAg and HBeAg were found in 5-50% of …
Acid proteolytic capacity in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles after prolonged submaximal exercise
1980
Acid proteolytic capacity in mouse cardiac muscle and in predominantly white (distal head of m. vastus lateralis) or predominantly red (proximal red heads of m. vastus lateralis, m. v. medialis, and m. v. intermedius) skeletal muscle was estimated 5 days after 3 h, 6 h or 9 h prolonged running at a speed of 13.5 m/min. The activities of acid protease and beta-glucuronidase together with the rate of acid autolysis considerably increased in both skeletal muscle types, especially in red muscle, but did not increase in cardiac muscle. Acid proteolytic capacity and beta-glucuronidase activity increased in relation to the duration of running. Protein content and oxidative capacity (the activities…
Fine structure of sensilla during moulting inNeomysis integer (Leach) (Crustacea, Mysidacea)
1980
During the moulting cycle the sensory cells and the newly formed hair shaft remain connected to the old cuticular receptive apparatus of the sensillum by the elongated outer segments of the dendrites, which run through the exuvial space. A surface coat covering the outer dendritic segments protects them against the chemical influences of the exuvial fluid. The findings suggest that the receptors remain functional until ecdysis. This moulting type is considered to be a transitional form between the moulting types so far known.
A Dichoptic Edge Effect Resulting from Binocular Contour Dominance
1980
If one eye sees a bright field on a dark surround while a homogeneous background is presented to the other eye, then a distinct dark zone appears at the outer borders of the field. If the surround is coloured, then the zone is of corresponding hue. The effect disappears if the edge of the field can be fused with a bar of appropriate contrast. The influence of parameters such as pattern contrast and size were studied quantitatively. A model is proposed relating the effect to receptive-field organisation and the fusion process.
Morphogenesis of mechanoreceptor and epidermal cells of crickets during the last instar, and its relation to molting-hormone level.
1980
(1) The fine structure of the cercal campaniform sensilla and epidermal cells of Gryllus bimaculatus Deg. (Saltatoria, Gryllidae) was examined, and the ecdysteroid level was monitored throughout the last larval instar. (2) The epidermal cells show changes in shape, cytoplasmic inclusions and differentiation of the apical cell membrane, coupled to the phases of buildup and breakdown of the (cercus) cuticle. (3) The imaginal epicuticle of the epidermal cells begins to form later (by about approximately 6h) than that of the campaniform sensilla. (4) The campaniform sensilla were studied with respect to (a) the morphogenesis of the cuticular apparatus, (b) the inclusion of phenol oxidases in th…
Novel porous carbon packings in reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography
1980
Abstract Porous carbon packings of particle size 5–20 μm were prepared by calcination of purified active carbons and cokes having narrow size ranges. Highly efficient columns packed with 10-μm particles were obtained by means of the high-viscosity slurry technique, and exhibited about 3000 theoretical plates at 100 mm length and optimal eluent flow-rate. The loading of columns, θ0.1, was determined to be 25–50 μg of solute per gram of packing. Eluotropic series of solvents were found to be similar to those on pyrocarbon-modified carbons and silicas. The log k′ values for homologous compounds increased linearly with the hydrocarbonaceous surface area at constant eluent composition. Studies w…
