The average over a sphere

Abstract The N points ri and the N segments ΔΩi of the unit sphere used in the numerical approximation of the average over the sphere are optimized to approximate the average of the set of spherical harmonics {;Yl,m;l = 0, 1, 2, …, L}; up to L = 18. The symmetry of f( r ) can be taken into acount by using only a distinct subquantity of the N point {; r i , ΔΩ i }; . Sets for N = 48n (n = 1, 2, …, 6) are tabulated. The advantage of the method is shown by the calculation of a powder Mossbauer spectrum including electric and magnetic hyperfine interactions.
On “Action Language” in Psychoanalysis

The main tenets of action language are summarized in an attempt to discern the direction in which psychoanalysis might go if action language becomes the "new metapsychology." The principal roots of action language are traced to the different linguistic/language and personality-and-culture models of anthropology and to the neobehaviorist currents of academic psychology. The authors' findings support the hypothesis that action language is a form os psychoanalytic behaviorism having idealism, logical positivism, and radical empiricism as its philosophical underpinnings. Summary Chlorophyll-protein complexes from thylakoids of Sinapis alba plants were separated, using Tris-HCl and Tris-borate buffer in the sodium dodecyl sulphate acrylamide gel electrophoresis. In the electrophoretogram with Tris-borate buffer, 6 bands could be characterized in the gel pattern. In addition to the three major green zones (P-700-chlorophyll a-protein, light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b-protein, free pigment zone), which were also observed in experiments with the Tris-HC1 buffer, three further bands (LHCP 1 , LHCP 2 , CPa) were electrophoretically separated. Intermittent Horner's syndrome on alternate sides: a hint for locating spinal lesions.

A patient with a cervical intramedullary ependymoma is described who exhibited a Horner's syndrome on alternate sides. Pharmacological study demonstrated damage to the pre-ganglionic sympathetic neurons. Disregarding cases with the Shy-Drager syndrome, three comparable case reports have been found in the literature where the fluctuating expression of Horner's syndrome, alternating from one side to the other, was attributable to a lesion of the cervical spinal cord. In contrast to the present patient, the pharmacological responses of these patients indicated a lesion of the central sympathetic pathway.
Comparative study on biological effects of the guinea pig complement-peptide C3a and C3a-related synthetic oligopeptides

Dose-response experiments with guinea pig C3a and a synthetic hexapeptide (amino acid residues 72–77), representing the COOH-terminal sequence of human C3a, were performed in two recently described bioassay systems for C3a, i.e. cytotoxicity against tumor cells measured as LDH and 51Cr-release and non cytolytic serotonin release from guinea pig platelets. Compared to the classical anaphylatoxic assay (guinea pig ileum contraction), nearly identical reactivities were observed in all three test systems with C3a and, although quantitatively different, with hexapeptide.

A phenolic cycloheptamer (11) and an analogous chain oligomer (10) with nearly the same structure were gained by stepwise syntheses. The cycloheptamer has a higher melting point and a better solubility in chloroform. In contrast to the chain oligomer his infrared spectrum indicates a stronger association of the hydroxyl groups which is not influenced by the solvent. The mass spectra announce a preferred statistical cleavage along the chain of compound 10 and a great stability of the ring of 11 which preferentially loses his substituents. Ribonuclease H levels in herpes simplex virus-infected cells.

Two forms of ribonuclease H (RNase H) have been identified both in uninfected and Herpes Simplex virus (HSV-)infected BHK cells. Identical RNase H species were detected in control- as well as in infected cells. RNase H I and II have not been found to be associated both with host cell DNA polymerase alpha and beta and HSV-induced DNA polymerase. Infection of BHK cells with HSV type 1 does not lead to a pronounced alteration of RNase H II activity but to an increase (3-fold) of the extractable RNase H I activity. Infections of susceptible and resistant mouse strains with herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2.

The spread of HSV of type 1 and 2 was investigated after intraperitoneal, intraplantar and intracerebral infections of resistant (C57/bl) and susceptible (NMRI) mice. The virus spreads after i.p. infection to the spleen and the liver to the same extent in both strains of mice. However, virus is eliminated earlier in resistant mice. Intracerebral infections revealed a peculiar type of resistance of C57/bl mice especially for type 2 of HSV. HSV multiplies in the thymus at the early stage of infection and can be detected in this organ in sick mice of NMRI strain. HSV-1 and 2 can be detected in the spinal cord of C57/bl mice without sickness or death of these animals.

Seven physically fit (well-trained, maximal oxygen uptake 69.6 +/- 4.4 ml x kg-1 min-1) and eight less fit (moderately trained, maximal oxygen uptake 56.1 +/- 5.7 ml x kg-1 x min-1) healthy male subjects were exercised for 4 h by bicycle ergometry against a pedalling resistance calculated to cause oxygen consumption corresponding to approximately 30% of each individual's maximal oxygen uptake value. Respiratory exchange ratio was estimated at 1 h and blood glucose and lactate concentrations and muscle glycogen content at 2 h intervals. The effect of pronase and trypsin on the activation or deactivation (degradation?) of chitin synthase ofSaccharomyces cerevisiae occurs faster in membranous preparations than in toluene-treated cells. When the temperature is raised, the former preparation is deactivated earlier than the latter one. The activity found in growing cells is not modified after inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide or amino acid starvation or by the inhibition of RNA synthesis. Nylon 6–LiCl systems of various concentrations were prepared by anionic polymerization of caprolactam in the presence of salt. A depression of both crystallization rate and melting temperature was evidenced through x-ray, density, and DSC analyses. Such a preliminary characterization allowed for choosing the proper conditions in order to obtain amorphous fibers from a spinning operation which was performed at a temperature lower than the pure polymer melting point. ESR Spectra o f Normal Human Serum after Treatment with Complement Activating Agents*

Abstract We describe the appearance of a free-radical signal in the ESR spectrum of normal human serum incubated with several complement activating agents. The intensity of this signal is dependent of dose of activating agents, time and temperature. Signals elicited by different complement activators differ in morphology and kinetics. Inhibition by treatment with EDTA and the presence of the signal in activated C 6-deficient rabbit serum suggest that the con-vertase forming steps of complement activation (C2 to 5) could be the source of free-radical containing molecules.
Coupled rotational and translational modes in the mixed molecular crystal KBr1?x (CN) x

TheE g andT 2g acoustic phonon modes of the molecular crystals KBr0.96(CN)0.04 and KBr0.86(CN)0.14 have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering at 6, 90 and 300 K. Clear resonances due to mode-mode coupling to molecular excitations were observed. In complementary ultrasonic experiments the elastic constants were found to pass through minima as a function of temperature. The results were quantitavely explained by a model which assumes simple forms of the molecular excitation spectrum. An alternative interpretation, though being only qualitative, postulates a freezing of the CN molecules into a glass-like phase.

Abstract The anticoagulant activity and the pharmacokinetics of phenprocoumon as well as the effect of phenprocoumon on the vitamin K1-epoxide cycle in younger (12 weeks) and older (36 weeks) male inbred Lewis rats has been examined in a study of the mechanism responsible for the increase in the responsiveness to oral anticoagulant drugs (OAD's) with increasing age. The decay of 0.57 s114Cs

Fusion reactions between58Ni projectiles and58Ni target nuclei were used to produce114Cs activity, which was studied by on-line mass separation and decay spectroscopy. The obtained half-life of 0.57±0.02 s and the probability ratio of 44±3 between betadelayed proton and beta-delayed alpha emission represent data with improved precision. The absolute branching ratios for both particle decay modes were determined to be (7 ±2)×10−2 and (1.6±0.6)×10−3, respectively. These branching ratios and the shapes of particle spectra are discussed with reference to the statistical model calculations. T cell factor (interleukin 2) allows in vivo induction of T helper cells against heterologous erythrocytes in athymic (nu/nu) mice.

Mice carrying the nude mutation (nu/nu) lack a functioning thymus and do not contain detectable levels of immunocompetent T cells. We now report that nu/nu mice do have lymphocytes which can be activated in vivo by heterologous erythrocytes and a Lyt-1 T cell-derived factor (interleukin 2) to generate T helper cells. Thus, a lymphokine is described which is able to restore in vivo T helper cell immunocompetence of nu/nu mice. The data may suggest that nu/nu mice contain a low number of T lymphocytes influenced by the cystic remnant of the nu/nu thymus anlage. Alternatively, the data imply that interleukin 2 circumvents the requirement of a thymus during ontogeny of T lymphocytes.
Some New Copolymers by Ionic Polymerization

In the first part the cationic polymerization of a homologous series of cyclic ether–acetals with ring sizes of 11, 14, and 17 atoms is described. During the polymerization of triethylene glycol formal (TGF) an equilibrium is reached and besides high polymers cyclic oligomers are formed. The oligomers and the polymers are built up of a regular sequence of one oxymethylene unit and three oxyethylene units –[–(OCH2) (OC2H4)3–]–x. They are therefore be labelled a “sequenced copolymer.” The equilibrium concentrations of the cyclic oligomers with a polymerization degree from 2 to 15 follow the Jacobson–Stockmayer equation. Two-photon exchange in muon-nuclear scattering

We obtain a low-momentum-transfer theorem for positive- and negative-muon--nuclear scattering, in terms of the charge and the electric and magnetic polarizabilities. The result opens the way to use muons as a tool to probe the electromagnetic structure of composite objects. Predictions of this two-photon effect for the asymmetry in the angular distribution of negative and positive muons scattered by /sup 4/He are given.
Deoxyribonucleases in Herpes simplex Virus Type 1 and 2 Infected Primary Rabbit Kidney Cells

Abstract In primary rabbit kidney cells infected with herpes simplex virus four different neutral deoxyribonuclease activities can be detected by means of the deoxyribonuclease assay in DNA-containing polyacrylamide gels following their separation by discelectrophoresis. The method is suitable to follow independently the change in each activity of the different enzymes using only about 5 × 105 cells for each assay during the time-course of infection. Under these conditions one enzyme activity is constant, two disappear while the activity of a fourth one present only in infected cells, increases.
Automatic continuity of generalized local linear operators

In this note, we present a general automatic continuity theory for linear mappings between certain topological vector spaces. The theory applies, in particular, to local operators between spaces of functions and distributions, to algebraic homomorphisms between certain topological algebras, and to linear mappings intertwining generalized scalar operators.

Abstract An on-line mass spectrometer has been developed and used to perform atomic and nuclear spectroscopy on long series of alkali isotopes including nuclei far from stability. The apparatus was on-line either to the ISOLDE mass separator or directly to the PS, proton beam. In the case of atomic spectroscopy, a thermal atomic beam is needed. As ISOLDE delivers 60 keV ions, a high efficiency “ion-to-atom coverter” has been developed. In all cases, an “ionizer” is required to produce 10 keV ions for the ion source of the mass spectrometer. Kinetics of coloration of anodic electrochromic films of WO3·H2O

Polycrystalline layers of WO3·H2O are obtained by anodization of tungsten in 1 N H2SO4 at 70° C. The cathodic reduction of these layers in acid solutions causes the formation of blue WO3−x·H2O (0<x⩽:0.12) oxides. The kinetics of coloration are investigated by galvanostatic and potentiostatic techniques. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical data obtained by solving the diffusion equation for a constant flow of oxygen vacancies and for a time-dependent surface vacancy concentration. Except in the initial stage of coloration, the process controlling rate can be ascribed to the diffusion of oxygen vacancies from the oxide-electrolyte interface into the bulk of the layers. …

Tritium labelled (17-3H) 16α, 17α-epoxy-androst-4-en-3-one and 16α, 17α-epoxy-estra-1,3,5(10)-trien-3-ol have been prepared on a large scale (200-300 mg amounts) with efficient (i.e. activity of product exactly predictable) introduction of label. The preparative method is very inexpensive, since the tritium derives from tritiated water, the steroid starting materials are readily available, and high yields are obtained in all steps.
Two-particle correlations in 400 GeV proton-nucleus interactions

Two-particle inclusive correlations are studied by means of the two-particle rapidity correlation function. The data for the analysis come from an exposure of emulsion plates to a 400 GeV proton beam at FNAL. Predominant short-range correlations among shower particles are found, but this does not allow to exclude some long-range correlation behaviour, in agreement with the results obtained in lower-energy experiments.

Specific changes occur in the cells of the uppers layers of the cat's superior colliculus when a two dimensional noise (background) is superimposed onto a deterministic signal (spot of light). Some of the measurements can be interpreted as meaning that some cells only react to certain relative movements of object (spot) and background (noise). The movement of the visual background is interpreted as environmental movement occurring due to the animal's own movement. Electrophysiological evidence for circadian rhythmicity in a mammalian pineal organ

Long-term electrophysiological recordings from the guinea-pig pineal organ show that three types of intrinsic cells can be distinguished: (i) Cells showing constant firing rates over periods of up to 24 hours. (ii) Cells which are highly active during the day and show a low firing rate during the night. (iii) Cells which exhibit low activity during the day and enhanced activity during the night; these cells can be strongly inhibited by 1 min of light given during the night. Canonical Neutral Current Predictions From The Weak Electromagnetic Gauge Group SU(3) X U(1)

A straightforward SU(3) x U(1) model in which there is effectively one new neutral-current parameter (denoted by R) is shown to give the canonical neutrino neutral-current predictions for all values of R. For small R the ''low-energy'' theory is essentially SU(2) x U(1) while for R of the order of one it has a much richer ''low-energy'' gauge-boson mass spectrum. Even in the latter case, the predicted e-d asymmetry agrees with experiment. It is interesting that the atomic-physics parity violation depends sensitively on R.
Morphological investigation of the deep pineal of the rat.

The results presented here reveal that in adult Sprague-Dawley and Wistar rats the pineal gland represents a complex rather than a single organ. Regularly one can distinguish (i) pineal tissue in the intercommissural region as a deep pineal, (ii) a superficial pineal, which represents the major part of the pineal complex, and (iii) nearly always a parenchymal stalk of variable length. The volume of the deep pineal with the adjacent parenchymal stalk exhibits great interindividual variation. It amounts to 127 +/- 39 X 10(5) mum3 (mean +/- standard deviation). Conversion of the Ca2+-ATPase from Rhodospirillum rubrum into a Mg2+-dependent enzyme by 1,N6-etheno ATP

Nucleoside triphosphate hydrolysis of R.rubrum ATPase complexes can be changed from Ca2+-dependence to Mg2+-dependence by replacing ATP with 1,N6-etheno ATP. Four ATPase complexes which have been prepared by different procedures hydrolyze ATP and 1,N6-etheno ATP at different rates in dependence on the added metal ions. These differences allow an easy distinction of the various enzyme forms.
Azapropazone binding to human serum albumin

Azapropazone, a new non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, is strongly bound to human serum albumin. As revealed by Scatchard analysis, one high-affinity binding site with an association constant of about 1.2 x 10(6)M-1 and two low-affinity binding sites with association constants of about 0.05 x 10(6)M-1 were found. While the high-affinity binding site of azapropazone is clearly not identical with the diazepam or digitoxin binding sites of human serum albumin, contradictory evidence was found by optical measurements and displacement studies for the similarity of the azapropazone and the warfarin binding site of human serum albumin.
