The introduction of laser techniques to optical spectroscopy of hyperfine structure (HFS) and isotope shift (IS) has put new life into this field at the intersection between atomic and nuclear physics which is now about fifty years old. Two severe limitations of classical spectroscopy could be reduced drastically, i.e., (i) the amount of atoms needed for optical spectroscopy and (ii) the Doppler width of optical lines. The increase in sensitivity went together with the development of powerful accelerators or reactors so that exotic nuclei with half lives down to 10 msec can now be produced and optically analysed. Particle-Rotor Model Study of the Transitional N = 89 and Some N = 91-95 Nuclei

A particle-rotor model with a nonspheroidal axial and reflection symmetric Woods-Saxon potential has been used to describe the rotational bands and gamma branching ratios in some odd-mass nuclei with 95 to 89 neutrons. Systematics of the deformation parameters have been found by calculations in the well-deformed region. The model is capable of giving a systematic classification of the low-lying odd-parity excitations in the N = 91 and expecially in the N = 89 nuclei. An important result is the identification of the 7/2+, 3/2+ and 5/2+ members of the 3/2+[651] side band in the weakly deformed nuclei. In recent years measurements of the total cross section for the reactions 2H(γ,π+ nn) and 2H(γ,π0)2H close to the production threshold were performed1. For the 2H(γ,π−)pp reaction data of similar good quality doesn’t exist. In this paper a method is prescribed and the feasibility for the reaction 2H(γ,π−)pp is demonstrated. Figure 1 shows the principle: The photon beam hits a liquid or high pressured gas target of 2H. π− are created on the deuteron and stopped in the same target cell. Occurrence and regional distribution of calcareous concretions in the rat pineal gland.

Serial sections of 90 Sprague-Dawley rat brains with the pineal in situ were scanned to determine the occurrence and regional distribution of calcareous concretions within the pineal gland and its surrounding leptomeningeal tissue. In 90% of the cases examined concretions were found in varying number and appearance, predominantly lying in the dorsal region of the pineal gland and in the distal portion of the pineal stalk. Elimination of hexamethylene diisocyanate cross-linked polypeptides in patients with normal or impaired renal function

Infusions of 3.5% isocyanate cross-linked polypeptide solution 500 ml were given to 52 patients with normal or impaired renal function: glomerular filtration rate (GFR)=0–133 ml/min. The serum concentration and urinary excretion of hydroxyproline were measured and the equivalent polypeptide concentrations were calculated from the results. In patients with normal renal function (GFR>90 ml/min) the proportion of polypeptide excreted in the urine up to 12 h was 45.4±2.6% ( $$\bar X$$ ±SEM), up to 24 h 47.7±2.9% and up to 48 h 49.3±3.4%. Effect of isometric strength training of mechanical, electrical, and metabolic aspects of muscle function.

Monozygous twin pairs (two female and four male) were used in a strength training study so that one member of each pair served as training subject (TS) and the other members as nonexercising controls (CS). TS trained four times a week for 12 weeks with maximal isometric knee extensions of the right leg. The parameters studied included muscle strength, endurance time, electromyographic activity, and activities of several key enzymes in nonoxidative and oxidative muscle metabolism. The results disclosed that in addition to a 20% increase in isometric knee extension strength in the trained leg of TS, an average increase of 11% was observed in strength of TS untrained leg. Recording of the force-time (f-t) characteristics of muscular contraction expresses the rate at which tension is developed. To further understand the problems involved in force production during voluntary contraction, the f-t curve was registered during maximal voluntary isometric extension of both legs performed in the sitting position with the knee angle at 107 degrees. 38 athletes representing various sport events, five pairs of monozygous, and ten pairs of dizygous twins were used as subjects. For the three different cases (R=polybutadiene, polypropylene oxide and EPDM) the isothermal cloud point curves of the system styrene/polystyrene/rubber (S/PS/R) show that at 25°C a decomposition into two phases occurs already in the presence of a few percents of polystyrene and rubber. Superimposing additively a two-dimensional noise process to deterministic input signals (bars) the neurons of area 17 show a class-specific reaction for the task of signal extraction. Moving both parts of the signals simultaneously and varying the signal to noise ratio (S/N) the simple cells achieve the same performance as resulted from the psychophysical experiment. However, inhibitory effects of agonist analogs on gonadotropin secretion or on reproductive processes have been observed in rats as well as in human males.
