Unitarity constraints on resonance mixing and the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule

We discuss unitarity constraints on the (complex) mixing angle (δ) between resonances. In particular, when the mixing is small, as when it is forbidden by the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule, or some other mechanism, one can derive useful bounds on δ or determine Arg (δ) from the data of allowed decays of the resonances. In the case of f′−f mixing the unitarity bound |δ|≳0.05±0.015 is barely compatible with the experimental f′←ππ rate (if one assumes that it is dominated by f′←f←ππ transition). Furthermore, experimentally Im δ≈0 which together with unitarity gives Re δ=−0.08±0.03, in clear discrepancy with the observed f′←ππ rate. Direct pyrolysis in the mass spectrometer of aromatic polysulfonates and polythiosulfonates

The thermal degradation mechanism of three aromatic polysulfonates and polythiosulfonates was investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation reactions were followed directly by this method by detecting the thermal and electron impact induced fragments. The results obtained have provided evidence that sulfur dioxide extrusion from the polymer backbone takes place in these polymers above 300°C. The synthesis and molecular characterization of the polymers studied are reported in the text.

CBA (H-2k) mouse-derived lymphochoriomeningitis virus and herpes simplex virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes lyse virus-infected target cells compatible on either the H-2k or H-2D region. Different degrees of severity in global brain oedema were induced by varying amounts of water intoxication (50, 100, 150, and 200 ml Aqua dest./kg b.wt. intravenously) in groups of six cats, which were functionally nephrectomized. Animals loaded with physiological saline and sham-operated served as controls. Two hours following the water load, the tissue concentrations of CrP, ATP, ADP, AMP, pyruvate, glucose, and lactate were determined by optical enzymatic analysis. The results show disturbances in brain energy metabolism dependent on the severity of the brain oedema. Abstract Of 715 cases of vesical tumors reviewed 18 adenocarcinomas were selected for further study, 5 of which fulfilled all criteria of urachal origin. Herein is reported 1 rare case of such a carcinoma of the signet-ring cell type and the morphological criteria of this variant are discussed briefly. After undergoing radical cystectomy and ureterosigmoidostomy the patient has been free of recurrent tumor or metastasis for 6 years.

Impaired refractory periods of peripheral sensory nerves in multiple sclerosis.

Maximum conduction velocity and relative refractory period (RRP) of median nerve sensory fibers were studied in 36 patients diagnosed as having multiple sclerosis (MS) and in 31 controls. Maximum conduction velocity did not differ in the two groups, but the RRP was significantly prolonged in MS patients. Increased RRP is observed mainly when peripheral nerve myelin is abnormal or damaged. Our findings support the assumption that peripheral nerve myelinated fibers are usually involved in MS.

Abstract A combination intermediate-image magnetic plus Si(Li) electron spectrometer has been adapted to internal pair formation measurements of cyclotron-induced reactions. The system is especially intended for the study of E0 transitions in the energy range from 1.5 to 8.6 MeV and to measurements of coincidences between internal pairs and heavy particles. Massive digoxin intoxication in childhood.

In a 10 year old boy 8 hours after taking about 16 mg beta-acetyl-digoxin a maximum serum digoxin level of 31.8 ng/ml was measured radioimmunologically. This is the highest digitalis level in childhood described to date. The serum potassium level rose to 7.4 mmol/l. Complete atrio-ventricular block, and salves of ventricular premature beats were the most serious rhythm disturbances. The absence of life threatening rhythm disturbances is attributed to the early use of diphenylhydantoin in small frequent doses.

Digoxin and digitoxin elimination in man by charcoal hemoperfusion

Since there is no widely used causal means of reducing the severity of massive digitalis intoxication the capability of hemoperfusion with coated activated charcoal to remove toxicologically relevant amounts of digoxin and digitoxin was evaluated in vitro and in man. At a blood flow rate of 100 ml/min the digoxin clearance by hemoperfusion in vitro was 51±8 ml/min in comparison to 24.3±11.3 ml/min by hemodialysis. The average hemoperfusion clearance of digitoxin was 31.7±13.4 ml/min, whereas almost no digitoxin was removed by hemodialysis. DNA-binding proteins (DBP) of normal human dermis, epidermis, horny layer and psoriatic scales represent a tissue-specific group of mostly nuclear nonhistone proteins. To analyse their function, the different DBP fractions were examined concerning the presence of DNase, DNA-polymerase and RNA-polymerase activities. DBP of normal epidermis and horny layer contain four different DNases. One DNase of both DBP fractions is active only at pH 5.0. Three DNases of epidermal DBP are active at a pH-range from 5.0--8.5, while the corresponding DNases of horny layer-DBP are most active at pH 7.4. 3H-serotonin release from guinea-pig platelets was demonstrated to be the consequence of C3a binding to these cells. A Scatchard analysis of dose-response data of the 125I-C3a binding pattern to guinea-pig platelets pointed to the existence of binding sites with high and low affinity for the C3a molecule (HA and LA receptors). HA receptors are specific for C3a with intact C-terminal arginine. whereas C3adesarg only interacts with LA receptors. The release of serotonin may be induced by a combined reaction of C3a with HA receptors and LA receptors on the platelet membrane.

The addition reaction of C-acetyl-N-phenylnitrilimine to pyrrole has been investigated. The products obtained show that the reaction proceeds via two distinct pathways. The 1,3-addition reaction leads to the non-cyclic-adduct III, whereas the 1,3-cycloaddition reaction gives a mixture of regioisomeric Δ2-pyrroline IV and V, and Δ1 -pyrroline VI and VII mono-cycloadducts. Abstract The ability of rat liver microsomes to catalyze the formation of benzo(a)pyrene 7,8-diol-9,10-epoxide — DNA nucleoside adduct was increased threefold by feeding 0.5% ethoxyquin to the animals.
