Two phenolic alcohols with four phenolic units in their molecules are obtained by stepwise synthesis starting from simple phenolic derivatives. The phenolic alcohols are cyclized by boiling of a diluted solution in acetic acid. A third cyclic compound is obtained by debutylation of that cyclic compound which contains two neighbouringtert-butyl groups and two methyl groupspara to the phenolic hydroxyl groups.

Strain of employees in the machine industry in Finland.

1978

In order to investigate the strain of workers in different occupations of the Finnish machine industry, energy expenditure and heart rate of 190 men and 47 women employees were measured during their normal course of work. Work was most strenuous in occupations in the early stages of production and in unskilled jobs. The relative strain of semi-skilled workers was highest in the oldest age groups, over 45 years. It is concluded that when systems for grading the strain of industrial work are constructed, the long-term effects of work and workers' characteristics such as age, sex, weight and physical fitness should be taken into consideration.

Problems in determining the size of the population and critical groups exposed to environmental noise

1978

Abstract In order to better estimate how and to what extent people are affected by exposure to environmental noise, an attempt must be made to calculate first the size of the entire population exposed to certain levels of noise and, second, groups within the population which are particularly sensitive to noise. Such a study has been started in the Federal Republic of Germany. It has been estimated that about 14 million people are exposed to sound levels of roughly 62 dB(A) and about 2 million to levels of roughly 70 dB(A). Nothing is yet known about the existence or size of sensitive groups within these populations, however, and the following report lists areas needing research in terms of …

8-Azido-adenosine 5'-triphosphate as a Photoaffinity Label for Bacterial F1 ATPase

1978

1. 8-Azido-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (n83ATP) is a suitable photoaffinity label for F1 ATPase from Micrococcus luteus. The nucleotide is a substrate in the presence of bivalent cations and inhibits the enzyme irreversibly upon irradiation with ultraviolet light above 300 nm. 2. More than 80% of the label is covalently bound to the beta subunits in the presence of bivalent cations. Labeling and inactivation is decreased by protection with ADP, ATP or adenyl-5'-yl imidodiphosphate. To a much smaller degree the alpha subunits also become labeled. 3. n83AMP does not specifically bind to the beta subunits upon irradiation. Like n83ATP and n83ADP, it also labels the alpha subunits to a small exte…

The positive inotropic effect of phenylephrine in the presence of propranolol. Increase in time to peak force and in relaxation time without increase…

1978

The effects of phenylephrine on the shape of the contraction curve and on the cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (c-AMP) content were studied in electrically driven (frequency 0.2 Hz) cat papillary muscles. All experiments were done in the presence of 1 micron propranolol in order to minimize interference from beta-adrenoceptors. 1. Phenylephrine increased the force of contraction in a concentration-dependent manner. Maximal effects (about 200% of control) occurred at 30 micron phenylephrine. 2. The positive inotropic effect (PIE) of phenylephrine was antagonized by phentolamine. Phentolamine, 5 micron, produced a parallel shift of the concentration-response curve for the PIE of phenyleph…

Binding of benzo(a)pyrene metabolites to cellular DNA in perfused rat lungs

1978

The influence of pretreatment with monooxygenase inducers on total irreversible binding of metabolically activated [3H]-benzo(a)pyrene to cellular DNA and the formation of benzo(a)pyrene metabolite-deoxyribonucleoside adducts after cytochrome P-448 induction was studied in perfused rat lungs. Pretreatment with the cytochrome P-448 inducer beta-naphthoflavone increasing binding by a factor of 23. In lungs of induced animals, 0.45 pmoles of benzo(a)pyrene equivalents were bound per mg DNA. Binding to RNA and to protein was also considerably induced by beta-naphthoflavone. Phenobarbital treatment did not significantly increase binding to cellular macromolecules of rat lung. Chemical reactions in a gas-jet recoil-transport system: Continuous separation procedure for selenium and tellurium from fission products

1978

Abstract Chemical selectivity in a gas-jet recoil-transport system can be achieved by chemical reactions with the carrier gas. This is demonstrated for an ethylene-nitrogen jet in which volatile species of selenium and tellurium are formed by passing the gas through a reaction zone heated to 860°C. Rapid continuous separation procedures for selenium and tellurium from fission products based on this effect are described and some decay data of the neutron-rich nuclides 85–88Se and 135–137Te obtained with these methods are given.

Aircraft noise and premature birth

1978

Abstract Certain physiological effects suggest that there may be a relationship between premature birth and noise exposure. Vasoconstriction in the peripheric blood vessel system is one effect. Others would be augmentation of the adrenocorticotrophic hormone and a higher vegetative excitability during pregnancy. Animal experiments have demonstrated negative effects but there is little literature available as yet on the specific relationship between exposure to aircraft noise and negative effects on pregnancies. A study of this relationship was undertaken in an area near the airport at Dusseldorf, Germany. While no significant negative effects could be demonstrated, a tendency toward an incr…

The HLA system and leprosy in Thailand

1978

To investigate immunogenetics of leprosy, 205 leprosy patients (26 with tuberculoid, 57 with borderline-tuberculoid, 21 with borderline, 31 with borderline-lepromatous, and 70 with lepromatous leprosy) have been typed for HLA antigens, and compared with 183 healthy controls from the same region (Northern Thailand). There was no significant difference between the overall group of leprosy patients or the three borderline classes and the controls. The two polar forms, tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy, however, showed significant associations: HLA-A2 is decreased and HLA-Bw17 is increased in tuberculoid leprosy; HLA-B7 is increased in lepromatous leprosy. When both polar forms are compared w…

Tormogen cell and receptor-lymph space in insect olfactory sensilla. Fine structure and histochemical properties in Calliphora.

1978

(1) The basiconic sensilla on the antennae of Calliphora resemble other insect epidermal sensilla; one or several bipolar sense cells are surrounded by three non-neural cells. (2) The apical cell membrane of the tormogen cell (one of the three accessory cells) forms microvilli coated internally with particles. (3) In the (extracellular) outer receptor-lymph space hyaluronic acid can be demonstrated histochemically. (4) Demonstration of non-specific alkaline phosphatase, Mg2+-activated ATPase, and the presence of mitochondria in the apical part of the tormogen cell suggest active transport processes through these cells into the outer receptor-lymph space.

A consistent microscopic theory of collective motion in the framework of an ATDHF approach

1978

Based on merely two assumptions, namely the existence of a collective Hamiltonian and that the collective motion evolves along Slater determinants, we first derive a set of adiabatic time-dependent Hartree-Fock equations (ATDHF) which determine the collective path, the mass and the potential, second give a unique procedure for quantizing the resulting classical collective Hamiltonian, and third explain how to use the collective wavefunctions, which are eigenstates of the quantized Hamiltonian.

Tierexperimentelle Untersuchungen zur Klebeorchidopexie

1978

1978

Summary Sinapis alba (white mustard) plants were grown under conditions of strong (100 W · m -2 ) and weak (3 W · m -2 ) light and the effect of the light intensity during growth on the CO 2 -compensation point and the activities of glycolic acid oxidase and ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase were studied. The CO 2 -compensation concentration was determined according to two methods: firstly in a closed system with an infrared CO 2 -analyzer, and secondly according to the curve of net photosynthesis as a function of C0 2 -concentration over the range of 400 vpm CO 2 to the CO 2 -compensation point (Fig. 4). Skeletal muscle fibre types, enzyme activities and physical performance in young males and females

1978

Differences in skeletal muscle characteristics, metabolic profiles and functional performance between males and females were investigated using young (15--24 yrs) male and female twins as subjects. The comparison included such variables as anthropometry, muscle strength, mechanical power, maximum oxygen uptake, electrical activation of muscle, muscle fibre composition (m. vastus lateralis), and activities of several skeletal muscle enzymes. The results disclosed the following primary differences between males and females: In the various functional tests the performance of females was from 61.1 to 84.6% of that in males; distribution of slow twitch fibres in m. vastus lateralis of the female…

A unified approach to quasi-static shakedown problems for elastic-plastic solids with piecewise linear yield surface

1978

The paper concerns shakedown analysis of elastic-plastic bodies subjected to quasi-statically varying loads within a given domain. Using a perturbation method, a general inequality is given, from which, by simply specializing the perturbing terms, the generalized Melan theorem as well as bounds on various deformation parameters (such as displacements or plastic strain intensities) are derived. The solution of the «perturbed» shakedown problem in finite or holonimic terms permits the bound to be the most stringent and expressible in «local» terms instead of integral terms. A simple application concludes the paper.

Sensitivity of a sensory process to short time delays: A study in pattern induced flicker colors (PIFCs)

1978

Pattern induced flicker colors (PIFCs) were generated by means of a modified version of Benham's top, the stimulus pattern of which could be varied continuously during stimulation by the human subjects. The sensitivity of the color sensation to small phase shifts between the periodic stimuli on neighboring retinal areas was recorded under several conditions of stimulus parameters. A mathematical model was developed to describe the influence of the stimulus parameters on the recorded sensory effect. Concerning the underlying neurophysiological processes, a hypothesis is advanced according to which the phase sensitive lateral interaction within the retina changes the spatial excitation distri…
