Aneuploidy as a consequence of senescence and ovariectomy in the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus).

1978

The hypothesis of the preferred X-chromosome loss in elder human females was reevaluated in the golden hamster: early castration of females proved that the increase of aneuploid cells is correlated with the loss of the ovaries. But here, and in old females, aneuploidy consisted of random loss of excess of chromosomes, in no case an X-chromosome.

Ultrastructure of differentiating hemocytes in the embryo of Oncopeltus fasciatus dallas (insecta, heteroptera).

1978

The hemocytes of Oncopeltus differentiate rather early during embryogenesis. They are segregated by the mesoderm soon after its formation (about 50h after egg deposition). Newly segregated hemocytes show the “typical” features of “embryonic” cells: many free ribosomes, a few strands of rough ER, the cisternae of which are considerably distended, electron lucent vacuoles around the periphery, and glycogen deposits. A few hours thereafter the hemocytes undergo striking subcellular changes. First, glycogen, electron lucent vacuoles and rough ER disappear and phagocytotic activity can be observed. Golgi complexes become well expressed and give rise to electron dense vesicles which fuse to large…

The thermal degradation mechanism of three aromatic polymers containing double bridged phenylether units was investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation reactions were followed directly by this method detecting the thermal and electron impact induced fragments. The results obtained have provided evidence that the double bridge between the aromatic rings is the preferred fragmentation site in these polymers. Furthermore in the double sulfur bridged polymer III, extrusion of S2 from the polymer backbone takes place above 400°C. The synthesis of polymers studied is reported in the text. Über den thermischen abbau des poly-ε-caprolactams (Nylon-6)

1978

Poly-ϵ-caprolactam had been pyrolyzed directly in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Already at temperatures below 100°C cyclic oligomers pres…

Collinear Laser Spectroscopy on Fast Atomic Beams

1978

In collinear geometry we have observed laser-excited, narrow resonances in fast beams of Na and Cs atoms obtained from ion beams by charge transfer collisions. Being very sensitive, the method is suited for measuring isotope shifts and hyperfine structure of isotopes far from stability provided by on-line mass separators. It may be used furthermore to study inelastic charge transfer from the energy-loss spectrum of the Doppler-shifted lines.

The Anaphylatoxic Peptide C3a of Guinea Pig Complement

1978

Abstract Highly purified guinea pig C3a was obtained after specific cleavage of isolated C3 by the alternative pathway enzyme VF-B in a one step procedure. It turned out to be a low molecular weight peptide with basic character (M.W. 9500; isoelectric point above 9.4). C3a represents an antigenetic determinant of its own in the native C3 molecule, different from the B determinant. Guinea pig C3a is resistant to 100°C for 10 minutes. Its smooth muscle contracting activity can be destroyed by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B. These findings indicate that guinea pig C3a is quite similar to human C3a.

Effects of organic aerosol constituents on extinction and absorption coefficients and liquid water contents of fogs and clouds

1978

We have speculated on the influence of organic material on extinction and absorption coefficients and liquid water content of fogs and of clouds immediately after their condensational stage. It results therefore, that the reduction of the speed of growth from fog to cloud droplets due to the presence of organic films largely reduces the properties mentioned. Compared to that their increase coming from the surface tension reduction due to organic material being dissolved or building up films is expected to be less effective.

Addition reactions of heterocycles. VI. Reactions of 1,2-dimethylpyrrole and 1-methyl-2-carbomethoxypyrrole with nitrilimines

1978

Addition reactions of 1,2-dimethylpyrrole and 1-methyl-2-carbomethoxypyrrole with C-acetyl-N-phenylnitrilimine, have been investigated. 1,2-Dimethylpyrrole gives three different types of adducts: i.e. bis-cycloadducts (Vc) and (VIc), spirocycloadduct (IX), and non cyclic bis-adduct (XII). On the other hand, 1-methyl-2-carbomethoxypyrrole gives the bis-cycloadduct (VIb) only. Compound XII arises probably through a double 1,3-addition reaction, whereas the formation of cycloadducts Vc, VIc, and IX depends on the substituents present at C2 of the pyrrole ring and consequentially on the intermediary occurence of mono-cycloadduct (IIIc), its methylenic tautomer VII, VIc, and XL The behaviour of …

A direct determination of the proton-electron mass ratio

1978

The cyclotron resonance of protons and electrons in a magnetic field of 5.7 Tesla produced by a superconducting solenoid has been measured. Protons and electrons were alternately confined in an electrostatic quadrupole trap. The quotient of the cyclotron frequencies provides a first direct determination of the proton-electron mass ratio. The result ofM p /M e =1836.1502(53) agrees with other more precise but indirect determinations of this quantity.

Gelchromatographie mit zwei Detektoren. Ein verfahren zur Korrektur von Gelchromatogrammen

1978

The relationship between the experimental function E(v) for the viscosity and the chromatogram after correction of instrumental spreading, w(v0) can be expressed by the integral equation where v0 is the elution volume under the integral sign and D(v, v0) is a function that describes the shape of the band spreading curve of a monodisperse sample. The relationship between the experimental chromatogram e(v) is given by the Tung equation. If the function D(v, v0) is independent of the molecular weight, then it is possible to solve these equations simultaneously and to calculate the functions w(v0) and D(v, v0). A mathematical method is given.

Histamine-sensitive adenylate cyclase of human gastric mucosa: a model for H2-receptor excitation.

1978

Recent studies revealed that human gastric mucosa contains a histamine-sensitive adenylate cyclase which is almost completely localized within the acid-secreting area of the stomach. In an attempt to further characterize the effector system of histamine’s action, we compared the effects of H 1 — and H 2-receptor agonists upon the adenylate cyclase in human fundic gastric mucosa.

Gordon Kaufman's Perspectival Language

1978

In the two decades following the publication of New Essays in Philosophical Theology, a metatheological awareness has been steadily developing among systematic theologians. Gordon Kaufman is one of those theologians prepared to face the rather embarrassing question as to whether sentences containing the word ‘God’ provide information about a transcendent reality called ‘God’. Kaufman has, indeed, always seen the need for a constructive relationship between theology and philosophy, a relationship in which both philosophy and theology retain their respective autonomous standpoints. In arguing for an historically orientated philosophy, he claimed that here one would treat what is concrete and …

The influence of the decompressive operation on the intracranial pressure and the pressure-volume relation in patients with severe head injuries.

1978

Measurements of intracranial pressure by ventricular catheter were performed in 47 patients with severe head injuries. Thirty-three patients with decompressive operations such as osteoclastic craniotomy and dilatation by means of duraplastic have been compared with 14 patients with closed heads with regard to volume pressure response (intracranial elasticity). This was determined either by intraventricular injection of 2 ml saline or by drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. The examination clearly shows that patients with closed heads have a much higher intracranial elasticity than patients who have decompressive operations, so that in the first group minor differences of the intracranial volume…

Feinstruktur eines dritten, nicht-ciliren Propriorezeptors an der Mandibel vonOryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Insecta, Coleoptera)

1978

A third proprioceptor is described in the head ofOryzaephilus, which—just as the other two—presumably controls the movement of the mandible. It consists of two muscle fibres between the anterior arm of tentorium and the dorsal base of mandible, and a sensory cell, which sends a dendrite to the muscle insertion. The numerous endings of the dendrite lie between the touching surfaces of muscle fibres and epidermis cells. They do not show any ciliary structures and are not surrounded by glia cells or connective tissue.

The zero-point energy for rotation

1978

The Gaussian overlap approach (GOA) becomes inappropriate for describing the rotation of weakly deformed systems. A modification is proposed which allows to maintain the GOA for small deformations. The zero-point energy subtraction, derived from it, provides a simple and reliable approximation for angular momentum projection. It becomes obvious, however, that the projection complicates the equations which determine the motion along the deformation path. These effects are studied in some simple models and the results are condensed into a simple interpolation formula for the total zero-point energy.

An analytical study of the ageostrophic motion of an air parcel

1978

The complete ageostrophic motion of an individual air parcel is discussed. It is shown that the general velocity solution of the equation describing this motion may be expressed in terms of the well-known series approximation of Philipps and a rest term; this term describes the inertial motion of the air parcel about a given initial state.

Level structure of170Er observed in the decay of the 2.76 min170Ho

1978

TheΒ−-decay of the longer-lived170Ho isomer produced through the170Er(n, p)170Ho reaction has been investigated by using a versastile detector and coincidence equipment. The half-life andΒ−-decay energy were determined to beT1/2=2.76±0.05 min andQβ =3.85±0.15 MeV, respectively. In addition to the ground state band and some higher energy levels, the proposed level scheme of170Er contains 11 states between 1.0 and 1.6 MeV (6 new ones), which are connected mutually by previously unknown low-energy transitions. Spin and/or parity assignments based mainly on coincidence data and multipolarity determinations are suggested for most of these states. By using systematic considerations and the nuclea…

Uptake of Acetylcholine by Bean Hypocotyl Hooks

1978

Summary The uptake of acetylcholine by etiolated hypocotyl hooks of beans ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is influenced by light and the pH-value of the incubation medium. Acetylcholine is hydrolysed up to 90 % during the uptake. The hydrolysis is inhibited by pH-value lower than 6.0 and by eserine, an inhibitor of the acetylcholinesterase. The high amount of hydrolysis is a serious problem in experiments involving acetylcholine and necessitates the inclusions of adequate controls without which direct effects of acetylcholine cannot be distinguished from reactions of its metabolic products.

HLA antigen, gene, and haplotype frequencies in Thailand.

1978

Antigen, gene, and haplotype frequencies as well as phenotype distribution of the HLA system were studied in a series of 213 individuals in northern Thailand. The series consisted of 160 northern Thais, 23 Thai individuals from various other regions of Thailand, and 25 persons of Chinese origin. Most frequently found were the alleles HLA-A11 and HLA-Bw40 and the haplotype HLA-A2, B-. Phenotype distribution followed a Hardy-Weinberg expectation. Significant differences were found especially between our results for the alleles of locus B and the results of a series from Bangkok reported by Chiewsilp and Chanarat (1976).

Mechanical energy states during running.

1978

Changes in total mechanical work and its partitioning into different energy states (kinetic, potential and rotational) during a step cycle of running were investigated on six well trained athletes who ran at the test speeds of 40, 60, 80, and 100% (9.3 +/- 0.3 m/s) of maximum. Cinematographic techniques were utilized to calculate the mechanical energy states as described by Norman et al. (1976), using a 13 segment mechanical model of a runner as the basis for the computations. The data showed that both the kinetic and rotational energy increased parabolically but the potential energy decreased linearly with increases in running velocity. The ependyma on the pineal of the guinea pig (Cavia cobaya)

1978

The proximal part of the epiphysis cerebri of the guinea pig is in close contact with the cerebrosopinal fluid of the third ventricle. A direct contact is not present as the pineal tissue is covered by a continuous ependymal layer. Two types of ependymal cells with different surface protrusions are discussed as being involved in possible interactions between the neuroendocrine tissue of the pineal organ and the cerebrospinal fluid. In addition, two different types of supraependymal structures are found on the ependymal surface of the habenulae and the wall of the third ventricle. Because of their morphological characteristics, these supraependymal structures are thought to be neural element…

The diagnostic value of CT for radiotherapy of cerebral tumors

1978

The paper deals with CT followup studies on 73 patients with cerebral tumors who received radiotherapy. The value of CT for the indication of radiotherapy, for followup therapy and for the demonstration of therapeutic success are discussed. Since the cerebral tumors become visualized by means of CT in their entire extent and can be differentiated from perifocal edema, the question arises whether radiotherapy should consist of higher doses in the future. It is also suggested that the "clinical malignancy" may be used to compare the behavior of cerebral tumors when there is no exact histological classification. The possible histopathological effects of radiotherapy (edema, necrosis) and their…

Development of the filiform hairs on the cerci of Gryllus bimaculatus Deg. (Saltatoria, Gryllidae)

The filiform hairs, mechanoreceptors of Gryllus, pass through six developmental stages during the last larval stage. The cytoplasm of their sense cells suggests intensive synthesis of protein for cellular metabolism and intercytoplasmic exchange of material via glial evaginations. Ultrahistochemical tests demonstrated acid phosphatase in the lysosomes as well as in components of the Golgi apparatus. There was no significant change in the appearance of the sense cell cytoplasm, indicating a maintained functional state also during molting. The new cuticular apparatus is formed after apolysis by the three enveloping cells. Formation of the replacement hairs is initiated by a cytoplasmic outgro…

The energy dependence of Zweig-rule-violating couplings. A dynamical calculation of ϕ → ρπ

1978

It has been argued that the violation of the Zweig rule is strongly dependent on the kinematical region, especially that it should decrease for large timeliket (asymptotic planarity). We have calculated thet-dependence of the vertex ϕρπ with two different methods, the first one using partial-wave dispersion relations and unitarity and the second one based on FESR and duality. The decrease in the timelike region is confirmed by both calculations. In the spacelike region the energy dependence of the Zweig-rule-violating coupling depends on the method of continuation to off-shell values. We only find an energy dependence if the full amplitude πρ → K $$\bar K$$ is taken into account.
