Poly(oxycarbonylethylene) (poly-β-propiolactone), poly(oxycarbonyl-1,1-dimeothylethylene) (poly-β-pivalolactone), and poly(oxycarbonyltetramethylene) (poly-δ-valerolactone) were pyrolyzed directly in the ion source of a mass spectrometer and their thermal and electron impact induced degradation mechanisms are established. Poly-β-propiolactone is thermally degraded by rupture of the OCH2-bond by a cis elimination to give carboxyl and acryloyl endgroups, whereas poly-δ-valerolactone depolymerizes to δ-valerolactone. Poly-β-pivalolactone degrades thermally to cyclic oligomers of pivalolactone, which could be proved by a separated pyrolysis and IR-spectroscopy and gel chromatography.

Magnetic hyperfine spectrum of isolated (199Hg)+ Ions

The (199Hg)+ ions were stored in an RF quadrupole electric field and their ground state hyperfine populations pumped optically using the ion resonance radiation at 1942 A from a (202Hg) isotope enriched lamp. A microwave field at 40.5 GHz was phase-locked to the 1350th harmonic of the output of a frequency synthesizer, referenced to a Cs-beam frequency standard. Using a digital averager, a high background suppression optical system monitored the fluorescence light from the ions. Linewidths on the order of 3 Hz were observed for the “field-independent” 0-0 transition, and a value of 40, 507, 348, 051±50 Hz was deduced for the magnetic hyperfine interval, corrected to zero magnetic field.

Depending on their ripeness, spores require from 44 to 64 h illumination to bring about maximum germination. There is a lag period of about 15 h between the reception of sufficient light to elicit germination before germination can be observed. Wavelengths in the range 640-680 nm are much more effective in inducing germination than longer or shorter wavelengths, but far-red reversal of red light induction of germination has not been demonstrated. Polyesters and copolyesters of 2-hydroxyacetic acid (glycolic acid) and 2-hydroxypropionic acid (lactic acid) were investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation of these polyesters and copolyesters at 10−6 mbar yields cyclic oligomers which are further degraded by an electron impact induced mechanism by elimination of formaldehyde or acetaldehyde and CO2 to give characteristic series of linear ions. In the pyrolysis mass spectrum of a copolyester (mole ratio of monomeric units ≈1:1) intact sequences up to 8 monomeric units can be observed.

Model-independent radius differences are derived from combined analysis of the present data and elastic electron scattering data. Summary Columns packed with four different sets of well characterized packings, spherical silica, angular silica, spherical alumina and angular alumina, varying in mean particle diameter ( d p ) between 1 and 10 μm, were compared. On these columns, the chromatographic permeability ( K 10 ), the column resistance parameter (Φ) and the reduced plate height-velocity dependences were determined under identical and comparable conditions. The effects of 5 and 10 mg oral nitrazepam doses on manual skills, grip strength, and reaction time 8 hours after ingestion of the drugs were studied in 34 healthy female volunteers aged 19-22 years. 5 mg nitrazepam caused a slight but insignificant decrease in psychomotor skills. With 10 mg psychomotor skills were influenced significantly. Grip strength and reaction time were not influenced either by the 5 or 10 mg doses. Abstract A vacuum ion implantation chamber housing a helium flow cryostat and a Mossbauer transducer has been constructed and coupled directly to an ion separator for low temperature implantation and on-line Mossbauer measurements. 83m Kr, produced by thermal neutron activation of enriched 82 Kr gas, has been implanted into Al foils in the temperature range 15–300 K. Annealing effects and the temperature dependence of the Lamb-Mossbauer factor have been studied by Mossbauer measurements (at 15–35 K) using the implanted Al targets as sources and Kr/hydrochinone as absorber.

Summary The covering of epithelial defects in the oral cavity presents special problems in preprosthetic surgery, since special requisites for function and quality of mucosal grafts must be satisfied. 3H-serotonin-release from labelled gp-platelets is established as a sensitive method for testing a new biological activity of gp-C3a anaphylatoxin in an autologous situation. Time-, dose- and temperature-dependent release reactions as well as specific inhibition by carboxypeptidase B and anti-C3a antibodies show that C3a is a potent and specific inducer of platelet activation. Inactive C3a does not induce 3H-serotonin-release but specifically inhibits the action of C3a on platelets.

Search for quarks in proton-proton interactions at √s = 52.5 GeV

The results of an experiment to search for quarks in pp collisions, at a total centre-of-mass energy √s = 52.5 GeV, are reported. The experiment was sensitive to fractionally charged particles with 0.035e ⩽ |Q| ⩽ 0.67e,β =v/c ⩾ 0.1, and masses up to 21 GeV/c2. The 90% confidence level on the ratio «quark flux/charged-particle flux» is 5.11 · 10−11 for |Q| = 1/3e. This value holds true for particles produced with a mean transverse momentum of 0.4 GeV/c.

In an attempt to simplify urodynamic evaluation, the data obtained from cystometry, urethral profile and flowmetry were analysed using the ICS recommendations for standardization and terminology. All studies were compiled from check lists feasible for computation. The aim was to establish standards and "typical" changes for the normal bladder and pathological states to enable automatic readout of computed data. The results did, in fact, show "typical" changes but failed to establish standard measurements suitable for completely computed diagnoses.
