Benzodiazepine receptor binding: the interactions of some non-benzodiazepine drugs with specific [3H] diazepam binding to rat brain synaptosomal memb…

1978

The interaction of several non-benzodiazepine drugs with [3H] diazepam binding to benzodiazepine receptors in rat brain synaptosomal membranes was investigated. Baclofen, benzoctamine, hydroxyzine, chlorpromazine, haloperidol, imipramine, and amitriptyline displace specific [3H] diazepam binding, but the concentrations needed are too high to explain pharmacological effects of these drugs by an interaction with benzodiazepine receptors. The most potent non-benzodiazepine drug for inhibiting specific [3H] diazepam binding was methaqualone (IC50 value of 150 micrometer). It is suggested that interactions with benzodiazepine receptors may account for the anxiolytic and anticonvulsive side effec…

Esophageal dysfunction and its pathogenesis in progressive systemic sclerosis

1978

In 25 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis esophageal involvement was studied prospectively by analysing subjective symptoms and radiological and manometric criteria. In all patients abnormal motility could be demonstrated by X-ray and/or manometry: radiologically in 18 (72%), manometrically in 22 (88%) cases. Dysphagia was present only in 11 patients (44%). Six patients (24%) had no subjective symptoms in spite of severe objective esophageal abnormalities. Therefore, the absence of esophageal symptoms does not exclude advanced affliction of the esophagus. To determine the pathogenesis of esophageal dysfunction the effects of 3.5 microgram/kg carbachol and of 0.6 microgram/kg pentag…

Streulichtmessungen an polymerlösungen zur bestimmung der verteilungsbreite des Molekulargewichtes

1978

By increasing the experimental accuracy of the classical light scattering technique it became possible to determine the width U = Mw/Mn − 1 of the molecular weight distribution of polymers. For this purpose a very stable laser and a lock-in-amplifier were used allowing an accuracy of 0,2–0,3% in the scattering intensity. The numerical evaluation of the polydispersity is done by a Gaus-Newton procedure analysing the small curvature of the reciprocal scattering function. In an appropriate molecular weight range U is obtained with an error between 0,01 and 0,1 depending on the width of the molecular weight distribution of the sample tested.

Atmospheric pollution in Venice, Italy, as indicated by isotopic analyses

1978

Rainwater samples collected in Venice over a period of about 1 yr were studied along with stone samples collected from buildings and monuments. Isotopic measurements of O, S, and C were carried out on rainwater, rainwater dissolved sulfate, carbonate in stone, and sulfate present in altered limestone, with the purpose of proving that atmospheric pollution is mainly responsible for the deterioration of monuments and buildings. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that, in spite of the geographic position of the city, atmospheric sulfate in Venice is basically tied to the emission of anthropogenic SO2 and that only minor contribution can be expected from seawater spray and aerosols. Th…

Nuclear Interactions of 400 GeV Protons in Emulsion

1978

Abstract We report on 400 GeV proton-emulsion nucleus reactions and compare the results to hadron-nucleus reactions at smaller energies. In particular we present results on the emission of fast target protons (essentially grey track particles) and on their correlation with the number of collisions inside the nucleus, ν, with the number of charged evaporated particles (essentially black track particles) and with the number of pions produced (essentially shower particles). We observe that the main features of the 200–400 GeV data are very similar. However, we find that the mean shower-particle multiplicity at 400 GeV is essentially higher than expected from the simple independent particle mod…

Activity of acid hydrolases in skeletal muscle of untrained, trained and detrained mice of different ages.

1978

The activities of p-nitrophenylphosphatase, beta-glucuronidase and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase from crude skeletal muscle homogenates of 4 and 7 months old mice were assayed after short-term intensive and long-term moderate training and after terminated training. In the older untrained mice the activity of the hydrolases was higher than in the younger mice. The level increased with training and this increase was far more pronounced in the older animals. Cessation of training for 7 and 21 days decreased this activity in the older animals but it was again increased 42 days later and close to the level observed in the trained mice. In young mice 3 days' terminated training increased the activ…

1978

On the basis of maximal oxygen uptake (\(\dot V\)O2 max) 18 normal, healthy men were divided into two groups of equal size: moderately trained subjects (MTR) each having \(\dot V\)O2 max below 65.0 ml·min−1·kg−1 body weight (54.0±8.3) and well trained subjects (WTR), whose \(\dot V\)O2 max exceeded 65.0 ml·min−1·kg−1 body weight (69.2±4.1). The WTR group had slightly (non significant, n.s.) higher percentage of slow twitch, oxidative (SO) fibers in M. vastus lateralis and higher (n.s.) activities of cytochrome c oxidase (CytOx), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA-dehydrogenase (HADH), and citrate synthase (CS), while lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was lower (n.s.). Exhaustive physical exercise and acid hydrolase activity in mouse skeletal muscle

1978

Adult, untrained NMRI mice were exhausted on a motor-driven treadmill by an intermittent-type running programme. Serial cryostate sections for the staining of NADH-tetrazolium reductase, beta-glucuronidase, beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase, and beta-glycerophosphatase activities and for making hematoxylin-eosin staining were cut from m. quadriceps femoris 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 15 days after physical exhaustion. A strong increase in the activities of beta-glucuronidase and beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase was observed 7 days after exhaustion and the activity changes, which were similar for the both glycosidases, were more prominent in the highly oxidative red compared to less oxidative white fibres. Abdominal scintigraphy for diagnosis of intestinal bleeding

1978

Abdominal scintigraphy with99mTc-pertechnetate, using a gamma-camera linked to a data processor, was done in 8 patients with acute massive intestinal hemorrhage and in 34 patients with chronic recurrent intestinal hemorrhage. Endoscopy and x-ray studies had failed in all patients to reveal a bleeding source. All but 3 patients underwent exploratory laparotomy, confirming the abnormal findings of scintigraphy. In all acutely bleeding patients, scintigraphy was positive. The bleeding was proven by laparotomy to be due to Meckel's diverticulum with gastric mucosa in 5, jejunal neurinoma in 1, and sigmoid colon carcinoma in 1 patient. Scintigraphy was positive in only 3 chronically bleeding pat…

Physical forces in blister formation. The role of colloid osmotic pressure and of total osmolality in fluid migration into the rising blister.

1978

The physical forces operative in the fluid migration from the interstitial spaces into the blister cleft have not been directly measured until now. The colloid osmotic pressure and the total osmolality were determined in suction blister fluid after mild suction blister production by a modified “Dermovac” and in blister fluid of patients with dermatitis herpetiformis, bullous allergic contact dermatitis and pemphigus vulgaris and in the sera of healthy persons. The colloid osmotic pressure was measured by means of a recently developed osmometer with a semipermeable membrane between 2 chambers, one of them filled with Ringer solution, the other with the blister fluid or serum sample. The nega…

Elastic constants in RbI, determined by inelastic neutron scattering

1978

Long-wavelength acoustic phonons have been studied in the whole (100)-plane of RbI at 295 K by means of inelastic neutron scattering. The raw data have been corrected for resolution effects taking into account the curvature of the dispersion surface and variations of the mode eigenvectors. The shifts of the neutron groups due to these resolution effects are discussed in detail. The analysis of the experimental results gives for the zero sound elastic constantsc11=28.15±0.5,c12=3.7±0.5 andc44=2.85±0.1 1010 dyn/cm2. A comparison with first sound elastic constants taken from ultrasonic measurements yields significant differences between the high and low frequency elastic constantsc11 andc″=(c1…

The course of intracranial pressure and volume-pressure relationships following extirpation of meningiomas and astrocytomas

1978

Thirty-five patients with meningiomas were compared with 37 patients with astrocytomas with respect to the postoperative course of their ICP and elastance. In the case of the meningioma patients, the ICP increased on average over a longer period and achieved higher values than in the astrocytoma patients. In the first group, the elastance attained values that were three times as high as in the second group. There was no fixed relationship between pressure and elastance in the two groups of patients.

Induction capacity and influence of dThdMP on thymidine kinase activity of type 1 and 2 strains of herpes simplex virus

1978

The thymidine kinase inducing ability of 104 strains of herpes simplex virus was studied comparatively. A pronounced relationship was established between induction of the enzyme and the serotype of the strains. As a rule, the strains of serotype 2 are weaker inducer of dThd- and dCyd-kinase activity than serotype 1 strains. A certain parallelism exists between induction of both enzymes, however the activity of the thymidine kinase increases after infection with herpes simplex virus 4--5 times more than that of the dCyd-kinase. Adaptation of the strains to cell cultures only slightly modifies the inducing ability of the herpes simplex virus strains. The thymidine kinase activity induced by H…

COS B observation of high-energy γ radiation from 3C273

1978

THE discovery of a high-energy γ-ray source at α(1950) = 12h 29 min±6 min, δ(1950)= +3°±1.5° is reported here. Arguments are given for the identification with 3C273. If this identification is correct, the γ-ray luminosity of 3C273 in the energy range 50–500 MeV is 2×1046 erg s−1 for H0 = 60 km s−1 Mpc−1.

The phenomenon of co-nonsolvency, i.e. the formation of nonsolvents by mixing two solvents, was studied for the system N,N-dimethylformamide/cyclohexane/polystyrene (DMF/CH/PS) which is characterized by the fact that the components of the mixed solvent are only incompletely miscible below 48,6°C. A number of quasibinary sections (stepwise addition of the second solvent to given solutions of the polymer in the first solvent) for a sample (M = 110000) of high molecular uniformity yielded a cloud point surface which gives “island curves” (closed solubility gaps) for constant temperatures between the critical temperature of DMF/CH and the top of the cloud point surface (51,3°C). Fourier optical approach to the extraction of morphological parameters from the diffraction pattern of biological cells.

1978

A new procedure for fast quantitative extraction of cell parameters from diffraction patterns was deduced from model calculations and applied to cervical gynecological material. Based on radial scans of the diffraction pattern, the technique permits simultaneous determination of the nuclear and cytoplasmic diameters by Fourier analysis of the radial scanning signals after compensation for the intensity falloff by an amplification proportional to the third power of the radial position in the diffraction plane. Illustrative examples of measurements on exfoliated cells of different types are presented.

Neutron scattering and crystal fields in Pr-hydrides

1978

The crystal field splittings of PrD2 and PrD2.5 have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering. While for PrD2 the crystal field experienced by the majority of Pr-ions is cubic, it is shown that in PrD2.5 the occupation of the octahedral interstitials occurs not in a statistical but rather in a well defined way which leads to an orthorhombic crystal field at the Pr-site.

Detailed quantum-chromodynamic predictions for high-pTprocesses

1978

High-${p}_{T}$ single-particle inclusive cross section calculations are presented for the CERN ISR and ISABELLE energy ranges, taking into account all lowest-order hard-scattering subprocesses required by quantum chromodynamics (QCD). The input quark and gluon distribution and fragmentation functions were determined from analyses of deep-inelastic lepton data and were subject to various theoretical constraints such as sum rules and SU(3) symmetry. We thoroughly discuss the effects of the individual contributions from fermionic and gluonic subprocesses, as well as those effects stemming from QCD scaling violations in parton distributions and/or fragmentation functions. In particular, the inc…
