The nuclear decay of the 5/2+ 139 keV state to the 3/2+ ground state was observed in muonic193Ir. The hyperfine splitting of the 3/2+ state and 5/2+ state was determined to be 640±100 eV and 1280±160 eV, respectively. The ground state splitting is about twice that of a point nucleus, an anomaly never observed this large. This is mainly due to the different radial distribution of spin and orbital magnetization of a d3/2 proton configuration for which these contributions nearly cancel to zero in the magnetic moment. In a dispersive approach to the calculation of the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the proton, the sensitivity to the annihilation channel input is analyzed. It is shown that the isoscalar s wave absorptive part gives the overwhelming contribution. The connection with the poorly known γγ→ππ amplitude is established and some numerical estimates are presented.

Eight main types of plant community capable of supporting populations of the meadow spittlebug (Philaenus spumarius (L.), Homoptera), were distinguished on the islands of the Tvärminne archipelago, off the south coast of Finland. The area is subject to land upheaval amounting to about 42 cm in 100 years. The flora and vegetation of the island meadows develop through successive stages determined by edaphic, climatic and biotic factors which themselves are changed by land upheaval. Publisher Summary This chapter reviews that bleomycins are members of a new class of DNA-modifying agents, the quasi-enzymes. In in vitro systems, bleomycin first removes thymines from native DNA by hydrolysis of the N-glycosidic bonds without modifying the deoxyribose moiety. In a second step, single-strand scissions occur at the sites of the nonglycosidic deoxyribose moieties, resulting in the formation of 3'-OH and 5'-P termini. Contrary to the upright resting position the flagella are stretched forward into a distinct starting position preliminary to any forward movement, and then pushed down with acceleration of swimming speed. Copolyamides from adipic and truxillic acids: Synthesis and characterization by direct pyrolysis in the mass spectrometer

The synthesis of a series of polyamides and copolyamides containing α-truxillic and adipic units in the chain is reported. The thermal degradation of these polymers was investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation reactions were followed directly by this method by detecting the thermal- and electron-impact-induced fragments. The results obtained show a good correlation between the intensity of mass peaks characteristic of truxillic and adipic moieties and the composition of the copolyamides, as ascertained by elemental analysis. Mucolipidosis I — A sialidosis

Mucolipidosis I is characterized by Hurler-like features and skeletal dysplasia with a cherry-red macular spot and signs of neurodegeneration involving neuronal cells and myelin. Excessive amounts of sialic acid-containing compounds were found in cultured fibroblasts, leukocytes, and urine of a patient with a clinical phenotype of mucolipidosis I. In cultured fibroblasts, profoundly diminished activity of an alpha-N-acetylneuraminidase (sialidase) was found. Mucolipidosis I thus appears to be a distinct disorder of complex carbohydrate catabolism caused by the genetic deficiency of a neuraminidase.

At the end of the incubation the concentrations of acetylcholine and its analogue acetylpyrrolidinecholine were determined in the strips by gas chromatography. 2. Immunostimulation with agents such as BCG or KLH may represent an adjuvant therapy in treating patients with bladder cancer. To investigate the effects of direct instillation and injection of KLH into the bladder of sensitized and nonsensitized rats, KLH was injected submucosally into the bladder. Abstract Phase‐sensitive ac polarography was applied to the simultaneous quantitative determination of 4‐nitroanisole, 4‐nitrophenol and 4‐nitrocatechol in alkaline solutions. Certain experimental precautions are necessary to determine each compound in the presence of the other two. Thus, 4‐nitrocatechol is determined indirectly by forming a yellow ratio chelate with cupric ions, whereas 4‐nitroanisole is determined directly by the reduction waves of the nitro group.
