Zusammenfassung Wir haben das Leberbiopsiematerial von 22 im Serum HBsAg-positiven Patienten mit der Fluoreszierenden Antikorpertechnik (FAT) auf die Gewebelokalisation von HBsAg und HBcAg untersucht. Fur die vergleichende Untersuchung zur Antigenitat und ortsrichtigen Lokalisation wurden folgende Gewebspraparationen untersucht: Cryostatschnitte, Gefriertrocknung/Paraffineinbettung, Kalt-Athanol-Paraffineinbettungstechnik ( Sainte-Marie ), Gefriersubstitution und isolierte Leberzellen. Sural nerve biopsies of four patients, aged 54–76 years, with a predominantly sensory type of neuropathy following high dosages of thalidomide were examined by light and electron microscopy. The present study includes a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of unmyelinated nerve fibers. Despite severe neuropathy, increased numbers of small unmyelinated axons per endoncurial area were noted in all patients. This numerical increase appeared to be independent of aging, since it was not seen in two senile controls, studied at the age of 83 and 88 years. Fluorescence labelling of organic acidic compounds with 4-bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin (Br-Mmc)

4-Bromomethyl-7-methoxycoumarin (Br-Mmc) is introduced as a fluorescence marker for aromatic and heterocyclic acids. To investigate the applicability of this method on substances of different chemical classes, screening experiments with 110 compounds were carried out using a microrefluxer. Most aromatic and heterocyclic monocarboxylic acids gave Mmc-esters which are fluorescent on thin-layer plates, like the Mmc-esters of fatty acids, which have been previously investigated. Humidity effects on gravitational settling and Brownian diffusion of atmospheric aerosol particles

The dependency on relative humidity of the settling velocity of aerosol particles in stagnant air and of the diffusion coefficient due to Brownian motion of aerosol particles was computed for six aerosol types and different particles sizes in dry state. Summary Plants of Sinapis alba (white mustard) grown under strong light conditions have a higher content of soluble reducing sugars, of soluble proteins and a higher dry wight during growth from germination to flowering. Furthermore, in these plants the nitrate reductase activity is essentially higher during the vegetative development, but before the beginning of the flowering phase the activity is less than the level of plants grown under low light intensities. We establish a connection between the nuclear axial current and pionic properties in the medium. As a strict consequence of PCAC alone, the time component has its matrix elements determined by a wave pion absorption to leading order in the momentum transfer. The properties of the system are governed by scale parameters associated both with its size and with the local interaction structure. Based on this observation we suggest a locality condition for the part of the axial current which has no pion pole. During the bionomic survey carried out in the course of 1968 on the biogenic platform bordering the rocky shore of Mount Pellegrino in the Bay of Palermo (northwestern Sicily) some individuals of a species of Synapseudes Miller (1940) were found in samples of Tanaidacea taken during the winter at station no. 1. This find is of considerable interest as no Synapseudes species had hitherto been described from the Mediterranean, although the presence of this genus on the coast of southern France has been mentioned by Bellan-Santini (1962, 1969). GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL VARIATION IN PERCEIVED EXERTION AND HEART RATE DURING BICYCLE ERGOMETER WORK

The relative contributions of heredity and environment to the variance in heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during the bicycle ergometer work were studied with 14 pairs of male (6 monozygous (MZ) and 8 dizygous (DZ)) and 22 pairs of female (8 MZ and 14 DZ) twins ranging in age from 11 to 20 years. The results showed for both sexes that no significant differences in the intrapair variances of HR and RPE could be observed between the MZ and DZ twin samples. Thus it was concluded that in contrast to several other parameters of the measurements of the physical work capacity HR and RPE are not influenced to any significant degree by the genetic factors.

Calcific deposits in atherosclerotic plaques are usually considered to be an end stage of advanced atheroma formation. Postmortem studies of coronary arteries showed that pronounced atherosclerotic calcifications are strongly associated with stenosis of the involved segments and ischemic myocardial lesions (Eggen et al. 1965; McCarthy and Palmer 1974). A close correlation has also been found between calcific lesions detected by fluoroscopy or cinefluorography and clinical coronary artery disease (Oliver et al. 1964; Wartburton et al. 1968). 6 Patienten mit einer schweren Digitalisintoxikation wurden stationar beobachtet. 2 Patienten hatten ein Lanatosid C-, 4 ein Digoxin-Praparat eingenommen. In 3 Fallen wurden ventrikulare Extrasystolen, in einem dieser Falle und bei zwei weiteren S-A-Blockierungen und in einem Fall zusatzlich eine A-V-Blockierung gesehen. Die maximalen Digoxinplasmaspiegel lagen zwischen 3,4 und 20 ng/ml. Bei einer Patientin war erst 52 h nach Einnahme von Lanatosid C und bei einer anderen 12,6 h nach der toxischen Dosis von Digoxin das Blutspiegelmaximum erzielt. We have determined the crystal field splittings of Pr3+ in PrIn3, PrTl3, PrPb3, and PrSn3 by inelastic neutron scattering. The values of the deduced crystal field parameters are found to depend strongly on the constituent X, though all systems have nonmagnetic ground-states. The line widths in the different systems are compared.
