In der Kernehemie sueht man nach temperaturund strahlenresistenten Targetsystemen, aus denen naeh Kernreaktionen kurzlebige Nuklide kontinu: ierlich abgetrennt werden kSnne n. Dies ist insbesondere im Hinblick auf die yon der Gesellschaft fiir Sehwerionenforsehung in Darmstadt geplanten Experimente interessan~, bei denen die Synthese neuer, iibersehwerer Elemente versucht wird. Als Modell fiir Verdampfungsstudien aus festen Targets wurde die tr~gerfreie Verfliichtigung yon Spaltprodukten aus festem Uran(IV)-fluorid gew~hlt [1--3]. Determination of gunshot residues by neutron activation analysis

Systematic investigations of gunshot residues, deposited around the bullet hole, have been carried out. The traces were produced by firing on filter papers from distances of 5 to 200 cm using one rifle and three pistols as arms. Antimony, lead and barium were quantitatively determined after irradiating the samples in the nuclear reactor TRIGA Mainz by measurement of gamma-lines of122mSb,122Sb,207mPo and139Ba. The determinations were made purely instrumentally and-where the half lives were long enough-also after chemical separation of the nuclides. The amount of the elements were determined in dependence of the firing distance and of the area around the bullet hole.

Microcinematographic Studies of Mycoplasma hominis Cells

Cells of two strains of Mycoplasma hominis growing in liquid medium on a glass surface were observed continuously, and cinematographic pictures were taken. Most of the observed structures showed reversible changes of their shape, suggesting the presence of contractile material in membrane or cytoplasma. The frequency and speed of such variations were measured. The deformations seem to be related to multiplication. The mechanisms of these phenomena are unknown.

The present paper describes the results of a study on the unsteady flow in a horizontal homogeneous filter, which is accomplished when the level of the reservoir that recharges the filter is instantly drawn up. This study was carried out at the University of Palermo Institute of Hydraulics as a part of a research program concerning artificial recharge of ground water and the geotechnical problems involving the stability of porous media subject to the variations of surrounding pressures. A new neuraminic acid derivative and three types of glycopeptides isolated from the Cuvierian tubules of the sea cucumber Holothuria forskali

The Cuvierian tubules of Holothuria forskali Della Chiaje, a sea cucumber found in the Adriatic Sea, were investigated with regard to their carbohydrate moieties. From a Pronase digest of these tubules three types of carbohydrate units were isolated and characterized. 1. A high-molecular-weight glycopeptide fraction was shown to contain sulphated polyfucose, galactosamine, a uronic acid and a previously unknown neuraminic acid derivative. The sulphate was shown by i.r. analysis to be present as an O-ester. The carbohydrate unit was linked O-glycosidically to threonine and serine residues in the polypeptide chain. The nuclide94Sr was isolated by chemical separation methods after thermal neutron induced fission of235U. Its decay properties were investigated employing semi-conductor spectrometers and coincidence techniques. A half-life of 74.1±0.3 sec was found. Besides the 1428.3 keV γ-ray we found 4 new γ-rays which could be placed in a decay scheme comprising three excited states of94Y. The 1+ states in theuu-nuclides90,92,94Y and88,90,92Rb are compared.

On the interpretation of optical illusions.

If excited by stimuli adjacent in space and time, the optical system frequently perceives illusions in the form of apparent movements. These effects may be attributed to the dynamic properties of the retinal nerve nets. On the basis of a specific psychophysical experiment the mechanism underlying the generation of optical illusions is interpreted by the methods of systems theory and its use in systems analysis is discussed. It is shown that for the perception of apparent movements the transit times of the signals in the dendrites are particularly important.

By applying immunologic, electrophoretic and enzymatic methods, extracts of different raft types of Culex pipiens were analysed. Rafts of the crosses Pa x Pa and Ha x Ha contained four common antigens, while unfertilized rafts of Pa and Ha (no antisera were prepared against them) and rafts of the crosses Og x Og, Og x Pa, and Pa x Og shared three common antigens with the remaining raft extracts. Disk-electrophoresis of raft extracts in acrylamide gel resulted in different electropherograms. Ten protein bands were common to all these raft types. Die zweifache unterdrückung der polymerisation einiger bis(methacrylsäureester) mittels radikalischer additionsreaktionen

Aus Hydrochinon, Resorcin, Dihydroxydiphenylen und Dihydroxynaphthalinen wurden mit Methacrylsaurechlorid Bis(methacrylsaureester) hergestellt. Setzte man diese in siedendem Benzol mit groser Verdunnung gelosten Ester dem Angriff von Radikalen aus α.α′-Azoisobuttersauredinitril (Primarradikale) aus, dessen Uberschus in Beziehung zum Ester mindestens zwanzigfach molar war, so erhielt man mittels saulenchromatographischer Trennung Verbindungen, bei denen je olefinische Doppelbindung zwei Primarradikale addiert waren (unterdruckte Polymerisation). On the variational approach to Jastrow correlations in nuclei

The variational equation determining the Jastrow correlation function is investigated with particular emphasis on the healing problem for both nuclear matter and finite nuclei. The consequences of several healing conditions are discussed. Furthermore, influences from the choice of the single particle basis and from long range correlations are studied and are found to be small in the short range region.

An insgesamt 716 Ratten und 750 Mausen wurde eine mogliche mutagene Wirkung einer bestrahlten Nahrung gepruft. Fertilitat, Tragezeitdauer, Wurfgrose, Aufzuchtleistung und Geschlechtsverhaltnis zeigten in 5 aufeinanderfolgenden Rattengenerationen keine Storungen in der Reproduktionsfahigkeit an. Es konnte kein Anstieg der Misbildungsrate bei den Rattenfeten beobachtet werden. Auch die Fruchtbarkeit der mannlichen und der weiblichen Tiere der Mausegeneration war ungestort. The North shore of the Gulf of Guinea forms the coastline of Liberia, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Dahomey, Nigeria, and the Cameroons (Fig. 1). The westernmost point of the coastal region to be discussed here is Cape Palmas (long 8° W) on the border between Liberia and the Ivory Coast. The easternmost limit is formed by the Cameroons Bight at long 9° 30′ E. The marginal basins are limited to the north by the upper Guinea arch which stretches for more than 2000 km in a west-east direction from Liberia to the Cameroons. The development of a scalp electrode for continuous measurement of fetal mean tissue-PO2 and simultaneous registration of ECG respectively fetal heart rate has been described previously (1). The electrode mechanics and electronic equipment must be adapted to the various demands of the birth process and the labor room environment. The technical results are not yet refined, when unfavorable conditions prevail, artifacts may be anticipated. A brief review of the proceedings in electrode clamp measurements should be presented.
