Virtual and Augmented Reality Applied to the Perception of the Sound and Visual Garden

2022

The COVID-19 situation has encouraged the creation of ICT-based learning environments. Difficulties in performing activities in a garden setting can be overcome by using Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The aim of this research is to evaluate the usefulness of VR and AR as an educational resource through contextualised sensory experiences in the garden. Eighty-seven trainee teachers took part, and a mixed methodology was used, for the analysis of the sound and visual elements of the garden and for reflection on the usefulness of VR and AR. An interpretive and inferential analysis of the AR-based compositions was carried out and of the drawings of the garden created by the pa…

Loco-regional treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: Role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography

2022

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the few cancers for which locoregional treatments (LRTs) are included in international guidelines and are considered as a valid alternative to conventional surgery. According to Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer classification, percutaneous treatments such as percutaneous ethanol injection, radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation are the therapy of choice among curative treatments in patients categorized as very early and early stage, while transcatheter arterial chemoembolization is considered the better option for intermediate stage HCC. A precise assessment of treatment efficacy and surveillance is essential to optimize survival rate, whereas r…

Metaphorical dimension of idioms in TV series for German, Norwegian and Spanish audiences

2022

Over recent years, internet TV series have grown in popularity to become one of the audiovisual products with the highest audiences worldwide. The Covid crisis, with limitations on movement, has further increased their success during 2020-21. English is by far the most common language for such productions, which are typically offered to non-anglophone viewers in translated format, with either subtitles or dubbing. One of the main challenges in translation here concerns the use of idioms, since these do not always have a fixed equivalent in the target language. Taking as a starting point a corpus of drama series from Netflix and Amazon Prime, this study considers the metaphorical dimension o…

Ten Actions to Counteract Vaccine Hesitancy Suggested by the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health.

2022

Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is one of the main causes of the widespread decline in vaccination coverage and has become the subject of ongoing debate among public health professionals. The present commentary is a “decalogue” of strategic actions to counteract vaccine hesitancy for public health professionals that comes from the cognitive and formative path put in place by the “Communication in Public Health” working group (WG) of the Italian Society of Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Public Health. From the establishment of a national, multidisciplinary WG on VH to the activation of a national monitoring/surveillance system on vaccine hesitancy, several proposals are discussed. The identificati…

Inversion of Left Atrial Appendage Will Cause Compressive Stresses in the Tissue: Simulation Study of Potential Therapy

2022

In atrial fibrillation (AF), thromboembolic events can result from the particular conformation of the left atrial appendage (LAA) bearing increased clot formation and accumulation. Current therapies to reduce the risk of adverse events rely on surgical exclusion or percutaneous occlusion, each of which has drawbacks limiting application and efficacy. We sought to quantify the hemodynamic and structural loads of a novel potential procedure to partially invert the “dead” LAA space to eliminate the auricle apex where clots develop. A realistic left atrial geometry was first achieved from the heart anatomy of the Living Heart Human Model (LHHM) and then the left atrial appendage inversion (LAAI…

The Role of Social Media Influencers in Public Health Communication: Case COVID-19 Pandemic

2022

During public health crises, public organizations face a variety of strategic communication challenges, and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 is an extreme example. In Finland, the Prime Minister’s Office initiated a communication campaign that utilized social media influencers to communicate timely instructions regarding the pandemic. However, it is uncertain how social media influencers adapt to briefings of public organizations given that they typically work with brands that align with their own interests and expertise, which rarely is epidemiology. We use the two-step flow of communication model and social influence theory to analyze research data that consisted of 96 Instag…

Microthermometry of fluid inclusions in calcite from Fuerteventura carbonatites: composition and formation conditions

2022

The petrographic analysis in calcite minerals in carbonatitic dykes from Fuerteventura Basal Complex (Ajuy, Punta de la Nao) shows the presence of isolated primary fluid inclusions, corroborating their magmatic origin instead of a late-stage origin. Micro-thermometric studies in calcite show a restricted range of apparent eutectic temperature (Te*= -21.7 – -21.0 °C) and final ice melting temperatures (Tim= -3.2 – -2.1. °C). Homogenization temperatures and pressures are in the range of 140-210 °C and 4-16 bars respectively. Our results suggest the binary NaCl-H2O system as a characterizing chemical system in studied fluid inclusions, with the presence of low salinity fluids (≈ 5 wt. % NaCleq…

A global experiment on motivating social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic

2022

Significance\ud \ud Communicating in ways that motivate engagement in social distancing remains a critical global public health priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested motivational qualities of messages about social distancing (those that promoted choice and agency vs. those that were forceful and shaming) in 25,718 people in 89 countries. The autonomy-supportive message decreased feelings of defying social distancing recommendations relative to the controlling message, and the controlling message increased controlled motivation, a less effective form of motivation, relative to no message. Message type did not impact intentions to socially distance, but people’s existing mo…

Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation in Mantle Cell Lymphoma; Insights into Its Potential Role in the Era of New Immunotherapeutic and Targeted Thera…

2022

Simple Summary We present the long-term results of patients receiving allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) for relapsed/refractory mantle cell lymphoma (R/R MCL) in the last 25 years in Spain. We conclude that allo-SCT may be a curative option in R/R MCL with a low cumulative incidence (CI) of relapse, although non-relapse mortality (NRM) is still high, which is mainly secondary to acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD). Results are better for fit patients, using HLA-identical (related or unrelated) or haploidentical related donors and without previous ASCT. However, the arrival of new highly effective and low toxic immunotherapeutic or targeted therapies inevitably will relegat…

Conditional particle filters with bridge backward sampling

2022

Conditional particle filters (CPFs) with backward/ancestor sampling are powerful methods for sampling from the posterior distribution of the latent states of a dynamic model such as a hidden Markov model. However, the performance of these methods deteriorates with models involving weakly informative observations and/or slowly mixing dynamics. Both of these complications arise when sampling finely time-discretised continuous-time path integral models, but can occur with hidden Markov models too. Multinomial resampling, which is commonly employed with CPFs, resamples excessively for weakly informative observations and thereby introduces extra variance. Furthermore, slowly mixing dynamics rend…

Conventional Oxyanionic versus Monomer-Activated Anionic Copolymerization of Ethylene Oxide with Glycidyl Ethers: Striking Differences in Reactivity …

2022

Detailed understanding of the monomer distribution in copolymers is essential to tailor their properties. For the first time, we have been able to utilize in situ 1H NMR spectroscopy to monitor the monomer-activated anionic ring opening copolymerization (AROP) of ethylene oxide (EO) with a glycidyl ether comonomer, namely, ethoxy ethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE). We determine reactivity ratios and draw a direct comparison to conventional oxyanionic ROP. Surprisingly, the respective monomer reactivities differ strongly between the different types of AROP. Under conventional oxyanionic conditions similar monomer reactivities of EO and EEGE are observed, leading to random structures (rEO = 1.05 ± 0…

Factors related to compliance with periodontal disease treatment appointments: A literature review

2022

Periodontal disease is considered a public health problem due to its high prevalence worldwide. Currently, the treatment of periodontal disease is not always successful due to many aspects, including non-compliance with scheduled appointments by the patient. Several authors over the years have evaluated different factors that could be related to non-compliance with periodontal treatment, so the objective of this narrative review of the literature was to explore and analyze the factors that may be related to compliance with periodontal treatment appointments. The results obtained allowed us to conclude that compliance by the patient will depend on a series of multiple factors, however, such …

Bodily obsessions : intrusiveness of organs in somatic obsessive–compulsive disorder

2022

AbstractIn this paper, I will provide a phenomenological analysis of somatic obsessions at times present in obsessive–compulsive disorder. I will compare two different types of bodily obsessions, which have a different neurological-physiological underpinning: anguishing awareness of one’s own heartbeat and of one’s own breathing. In addition, I will contrast these two with how one experiences one’s own liver. I will use the concepts "tactility obsessions” and "motility obsessions”, which I have coined for the purpose of this comparison. In other words, these are obsessions concerning the felt sense of one’s autonomous organs and obsessions concerning one’s ability to voluntarily move. Ultim…

2022

Two fibrous fillers were achieved from stalks and leaves of Chamaerops humilis dwarf palm and tested as reinforcing agents for poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) (PBAT)-based composites. The influence of filler type and content on the morphomechanical properties of the green composites was assessed. The outcomes of tensile tests pointed out that both fillers are strong candidates to overcome the two main limiting aspects of PBAT, that is, the lack of both stiffness and cost-effectiveness, while preserving its stretchability and environmental sustainability. The remarkable stiffness increments (up to 300%), combined with fair retention of stretchability (33%) and doubled resistance, led…

Temozolomide and Capecitabine Treatment for an Aggressive Somatotroph Pituitary Tumor: A Case Report and Literature Review

2022

Aggressive somatotroph pituitary tumor that causes acromegaly is extremely rare and resists conventional treatments such as multiple surgeries, radiotherapies, and various types of somatostatin analogs. Here, we propose a novel treatment option for these rare cases by discussing our case and reviewing the literature. We experienced an aggressive somatotroph tumor in a 52-year-old woman with acromegaly. Not only could a complete remission of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) not be obtained, but the tumor continued to grow and eventually recurred around the brainstem despite multidisciplinary treatments. We employed immunohistochemistry and a three-dimensional (3D)…

Unveiling the egg microbiota of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta in nesting beaches of the Mediterranean Sea

2022

Microbes have central roles in the development and health of animals, being the introduction of specific microbial species a potential conservation strategy to protect animals from emerging diseases. Thus, insight into the microbiota of the species and their habitats is essential. In this manuscript, we report for the first time the bacterial composition of all the components (eggshells of hatched and unhatched eggs, internal content of unhatched eggs, intestinal content of hatchling and pipping sea turtles, and sand) of three nesting beaches of Caretta caretta along the Italian coasts of the Mediterranean Sea. The analysis of 26 amplicon samples was carried out using next-generation sequen…

The Waves of Time Revisited : Glimpses of life

2022

This study could perhaps be characterized as the art of walking in time, verbally, pictorially and abstractly, i.e. using words, images and thoughts. Of course, the ideal of essayism also includes a scientific dimension. Equally the aim is to make multi-level use of the idea of dialogue. At the same time, the writer is also carrying on a monologue (with himself), an aspect that is called dialogic monologue. After all, the respondent, too, is himself the questioner. Architecture and the essay are reminiscent of each other. The created building and the created word are close relatives. An essayistic study signifies a hermetic state of language. A text’s inner verbal room is constructed from a…

Anisakid Nematodes and Potential Risk of Human Anisakiasis through the Consumption of Hake, Merluccius spp., Sold Fresh in Spanish Supermarkets

2022

Nematode parasite species belonging to the Anisakis simplex complex are the most important cause of human anisakiasis through the consumption of (mainly) undercooked, previously not frozen, or conveniently treated fish. In Spain, the consumption of hake has been recognized as an important source of this parasitosis. With the aim of shedding light on the risk factors that can influence the potential risk of human anisakiasis in Spain through the consumption of fresh hake sold by nationwide supermarket chains, a total of 536 small hake specimens belonging to the species Merluccius bilinearis caught off the Northeast American coasts and Merluccius merluccius caught in the Northeast Atlantic an…

Improving Small Molecule pKa Prediction Using Transfer Learning With Graph Neural Networks

2022

Enumerating protonation states and calculating microstate pKa values of small molecules is an important yet challenging task for lead optimization and molecular modeling. Commercial and non-commercial solutions have notable limitations such as restrictive and expensive licenses, high CPU/GPU hour requirements, or the need for expert knowledge to set up and use. We present a graph neural network model that is trained on 714,906 calculated microstate pKa predictions from molecules obtained from the ChEMBL database. The model is fine-tuned on a set of 5,994 experimental pKa values significantly improving its performance on two challenging test sets. Combining the graph neural network model wit…

Contrasting reproductive traits of competing parasitoids facilitate coexistence on a shared host pest in a biological control perspective

2022

BACKGROUND: Interspecific competition in insect parasitoids is an important ecological phenomenon that has relevant implications for biological pest control. To date, interspecific intrinsic (=larval) competition has been intensively studied, while investigations on extrinsic (=adult) competition have often lagged behind. In this study we examined the role played by parasitoid reproductive traits and host clutch size on the outcome of extrinsic competition between Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev), two egg parasitoids of the pest Nezara viridula (L). Laboratory experiments were conducted by allowing both parasitoid species to exploit an egg mass made of …

Editorial: Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Therapy for Regenerative Medicine

2022

Mesenchymal stromal/stem cell (MSC) therapies are increasingly explored as novel regenerative and immunomodulatory approaches to treat or prevent diseases (Pittenger et al., 2019; Hmadcha et al., 2020; Moll et al., 2020b; Ringdén et al., 2022). These cells exhibit potent paracrine properties that can modulate host immune responses, lower inflammation, and orchestrate endogenous tissue repair, at both the local and the systemic level through multiple pathways (Singer and Caplan, 2011; Doorn et al., 2012). MSCs possess tropism toward damaged and inflamed tissues, where they can engraft short-term and exert their therapeutic effects by both direct and indirect mechanisms (Doorn et al., 2012; G…

Stage performances as means for linking sociotechnical imaginaries and projective genres in the discourse around urban air mobility

2022

AbstractSociotechnical imaginaries play a crucial role in the context of urban air mobility. At the beginning of this article, I present the Pop.Up, commonly described as ‘air taxi’, as one such vision. Taking the analysis of multiple visions as an orientation, I show secondly, how other temporal figures such as projective genres fulfil different functions to establish specific visions as dominant ones. By examining a press release about the Pop.Up, I show how distant futures are constructed trough explicating the problem of congestion in metropolitan cities. With the analysis of the stage performance by stakeholders from Airbus and Italdesign during the Geneva Motor Show 2017, where the Po…

Arterial Hypertension and the Hidden Disease of the Eye: Diagnostic Tools and Therapeutic Strategies.

2022

Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor that is responsible for a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. A critical aspect of cardiovascular risk estimation in hypertensive patients depends on the assessment of hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD), namely the generalized structural and functional changes in major organs induced by persistently elevated blood pressure values. The vasculature of the eye shares several common structural, functional, and embryological features with that of the heart, brain, and kidney. Since retinal microcirculation offers the unique advantage of being directly accessible to non-invasive and relatively simple investigation tools, the…
