Development of the GABAergic and glutamatergic neurons of the lateral hypothalamus.
2021
In the last few years we assist to an unexpected deluge of genomic data on hypothalamic development and structure. Perhaps most surprisingly, the Lateral Zone has received much attention too. The new information focuses first of all on transcriptional heterogeneity. Many already known and a number of hitherto unknown lateral hypothalamic neurons have been described to an enormous degree of detail. Maybe the most surprising novel discoveries are two: First, some restricted regions of the embryonic forebrain neuroepithelium generate specific LHA neurons, either GABAergic or glutamatergic. Second, evidence is mounting that supports the existence of numerous kinds of "bilingual" lateral hypotha…

A multiple-response chi-square framework for the analysis of Free-Comment and Check-All-That-Apply data
2021
International audience; Free-Comment (FC) and Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) provide a contingency table containing citation counts of descriptors by products. The analyses performed on this table are most often related to the chi-square statistic. However, such practices are not well suited because they consider experimental units as being the citations (one descriptor for one product by one subject) while the evaluations (vector of citations for one product by one subject) should be considered instead. This results in incorrect expected frequencies under the null hypothesis of independence between products and descriptors and thus in an incorrect chi-square statistic. Thus, analyses related …

IntroductionPrimary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetic, multiorgan disease with an estimated prevalence of 1 in 10 000. It affects mainly the upper and lower airways due to impaired mucociliary clearance. Almost all patients have sinonasal or otologic (ear–nose–throat, ENT) problems, although the ENT clinical phenotype may present great variability. Despite that, data on PCD ENT manifestations are scarce and based on small single-centre studies. To date, we know little about the spectrum and severity of PCD ENT disease, its association with lung disease, its course over life and its determinants of prognosis. This study protocol describes the aims and methods of the first prospectiv…
Assessing local differences between the spatio-temporal second-order structure of two point patterns occurring on the same linear network
2021
Abstract We introduce Local Indicators of Spatio-Temporal Association (LISTA) functions on linear networks and use them to build a statistical test for local second-order structure. This allows to identify differences in the spatio-temporal clustering behaviour of two point patterns, a point pattern of interest and a background one, both occurring on the same linear network. We assess the performance of the testing procedure for local second-order structure through simulation studies under a variety of scenarios that also account for different generating point processes. We show that the proposed local test is able to correctly identify the spatio-temporal difference in the local second-ord…
Integrating vehicle specific power methodology and microsimulation in estimating emissions on urban roundabouts
2021
In this study pollutant emissions were estimated from VSP modal emission rates and the distribution of time spent in each VSP mode obtained from the speed profiles both gathered in the field and simulated in AIMSUN at a sample of urban roundabouts. The versatility of the micro-simulation model for a calibration aimed at improving accuracy of emissions estimates was tested in order to ensure that second-by-second trajectories experienced in the field by a test vehicle through the sampled roundabouts properly reflected the simulated speed profiles. The first results which the thesis will refer, confirmed the feasibility of the smart approach that integrates the use of field-observed and simul…
Phenotypic and genotypic study on antibiotic resistance and pathogenic factors of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from small ruminant mastitis milk in…
2021
Staphyloccoccus aureus is the major cause of mastitis in small ruminants in the Mediterranean farms causing severe losses to dairy industry. Antibiotic treatment has been the most common approach to control these infections. Aim of this study was to investigate antimicrobial resistance (AMR), virulence factors and biofilm-related genes of 84 Sicilian strains of S. aureus isolated from sheep and goats milk during two different periods δT1 (2006-2009) and δT2 (2013-2015). Kirby Bauer method and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) were utilized to monitor AMR and related genes (mecA, tetK, tetM, ermA, ermC). Moreover, toxin genes (tsst-1, sea-see, seg-sej, and sep) and biofilm genes (bap, ica, sas…
Rats bred for low intrinsic aerobic exercise capacity link obesity with brain inflammation and reduced structural plasticity of the hippocampus.
2021
Abstract BACKGROUND Increasing evidence shows obesity and poor metabolic health are associated with cognitive deficits, but the mechanistic connections have yet to be resolved. We studied rats selectively bred for low and high intrinsic aerobic capacity in order to test the association between low physical fitness, a genetic predisposition for obesity, and brain health. We hypothesized that low-capacity runner (LCR) rats with concurrently greater levels of adiposity would have increased hippocampal inflammation and reduced plasticity compared to the more physically fit high-capacity runner (HCR) rats. METHODS We examined markers for inflammation and brain plasticity in the hippocampi of LCR…
Yet Another New Variant of Szász–Mirakyan Operator
2021
In this paper, we construct a new variant of the classical Szász–Mirakyan operators, Mn, which fixes the functions 1 and eax,x≥0,a∈R. For these operators, we provide a quantitative Voronovskaya-type result. The uniform weighted convergence of Mn and a direct quantitative estimate are obtained. The symmetry of the properties of the classical Szász–Mirakyan operator and of the properties of the new sequence is investigated. Our results improve and extend similar ones on this topic, established in the last decade by many authors.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer—More than Just a Comorbidity?
2021
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type of sleep-disordered breathing with growing prevalence. Its presence has been associated with poor quality of life and serious comorbidities. There is increasing evidence for coexisting obstructive sleep apnea in patients suffering from head and neck cancer, a condition that ranks among the top ten most common types of cancer worldwide. Routinely, patients with head and neck cancer are treated with surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination of these, all possibly interfering with the anatomy of the oral cavity, pharynx or larynx. Thus, cancer treatment might worsen already existing obstructive sleep apnea or trigge…
Circular business models for lithium-ion batteries - Stakeholders, barriers, and drivers
2021
Abstract Business models for the circular economy, or circular business models, is a growing field of research applied in various industries. Global sustainability trends, such as electrification of the transport sector and increased energy consumption from renewable sources, have led to rapid growth in the number of batteries produced, especially lithium-ion based batteries. Sustainable lifetime management, including end-of-life, needs development to avoid social and environmental harm and potentially to recapture economic value as the use of these batteries increases. Current research primarily focuses on technical and economic issues based on recycling and the second use of batteries rat…
CD34 and CD105 Microvessels in Resected Bone Specimen May Implicate Wound Healing in MRONJ
2021
Clinical treatment outcome of MRONJ (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw) surgery despite radical osseous removal and primary closure healing still shows differences in terms of outcome and disease recurrence. The study aims to assess the rate of angiogenesis of MRONJ lesions in order to understand the impact of angiogenesis and neoangiogenesis status on MRONJ surgical treatment outcome. This is the first study correlating microvessel density with prognosis in MRONJ surgically-treated patients. The immunohistochemical expression of CD34 and CD105 in MRONJ specimens obtained from surgically-treated patients was evaluated. The most vascularized areas detected by CD34 and CD105 were se…

2021
ABSTRACT Background The indirect impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer care and timely diagnosis is of increasing concern. We investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on incidence, time of diagnosis and delivery of healthcare among paediatric oncology patients in Germany in 2020. Methods We analysed incident paediatric cancer cases diagnosed in 0- to 17-year olds in Germany in 2020 using data of the German Childhood Cancer Registry. Absolute numbers and age-standardised incidence rates (ASR) in 2020 were compared to the previous five years (2015–2019). Moreover, we conducted a survey with open-ended questions, gathering perceptions of the diagnostic process and healthcare delive…

Uncertainty evaluation in the differential measurements of power losses in a power drive system
2021
Abstract In order to guarantee a correct classification in the standardized energy efficiency classes, the current standards concerning the power drive systems prescribe that their power losses must be evaluated with great accuracy. This circumstance involves the usage of expensive measurement systems, since accurate instrumentation, skilled personnel and controlled environments are required. During the design stage of a power drive system, however, the measurement of the absolute value of its power losses is not always needed. Often, in fact, it is enough to assess the power losses variations caused by a modification of either hardware or software sections of the power drive system. In the…
Supply chain finance: The role of credit rating and retailer effort on optimal contracts
2021
Abstract Supply chain finance aims at finding the best financing arrangements within a given buyer-supplier dyad. The source of capital can be internal (buyer or supplier) or external (financial institution) to the supply chain. So far, many studies have investigated the optimal mix of the sources of capital; our study aims at contributing to the recent literature that explores the interface of operations and finance extending the supplier-based financing models. As the Covid-19 pandemic hits economic activity, the financial constraints have ever greater importance; knock-on effects of the Covid-19 crisis urges on the critical role of a supply chain that should provide financial resources, …
Sodium metabisulfite as a cytotoxic food additive induces apoptosis in HFFF2 cells
2021
Sodium metabisulfite (SMB), an antioxidant agent, is extensively used as a preservative in food industry. The current study was aimed to clarify its potential toxic effects on human fetal foreskin fibroblasts (HFFF2) cells, in vitro. Subsequently, MTT results illustrated that exposure to SMB significantly (p 0.0001) decreased HFFF2 cell viability in a dose-dependent manner, and the concentration of 25 μM reduced cell survival rates to 50% as the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of SMB. It was further shown that SMB exerted this cytotoxic effect on HFFF2 cells through apoptosis induction. qRT-PCR and western blotting results showed that treatment of HFFF2 cells with this food additive …
Gut Microbiota Cannot Compensate the Impact of (quasi) Aposymbiosis in Blattella germanica
2021
Simple Summary The German cockroach Blattella germanica is a good model to study complex symbiotic relationships because the following two symbiotic systems coexist in a single individual: the endosymbiont Blattabacterium (living inside specialized cells called bacteriocytes) and the gut microbiota. Although the role of the endosymbiont has been fully elucidated, the function of the gut microbiota remains unclear. The study of the gut microbiota will benefit from the availability of insects deprived of Blattabacterium. Our goal is to determine the effect of the removal (or, at least, the reduction) of the endosymbiont population on the cockroach’s fitness, in a normal gut microbiota communi…
Career experts’ conceptions of innovation in career development
2021
AbstractThis article reports the findings from a phenomenographic investigation into career experts’ conceptions of innovation in career development. The results show that conceptions of innovation in career development varied from (1) initiating service, (2) developing demographic-based programmes, (3) professionalising the sector to (4) exploiting cross-sectoral synergies. The findings give us a more profound understanding of critical aspects that may have an important role in improving innovation in career development.
Prefazione a "SCIASCIARIO DIALETTALE. 67 parole dalle Parrocchie" (di Roberto Sottile)
2021

In vivo analysis of noise dependent activation of white blood cells and microvascular dysfunction in mice
2021
This article contains supporting information on data collection for the research article entitled “Aircraft noise exposure drives the activation of white blood cells and induces microvascular dysfunction in mice” by Eckrich et al. We found that noise-induced stress triggered microvascular dysfunction via involvement of innate immune-derived reactive oxygen species. In this article, we present the instrumentation of mice with dorsal skinfold chambers for in vivo microscopic imaging of blood flow, interaction of leukocytes with the vascular wall (also by fluorescent labelling of blood cells) and vessel diameter. In addition, we explain the preparation of cerebral arterioles for measurement of…
Human brain organoids assemble functionally integrated bilateral optic vesicles
2021
During embryogenesis, optic vesicles develop from the diencephalon via a multistep process of organogenesis. Using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived human brain organoids, we attempted to simplify the complexities and demonstrate formation of forebrain-associated bilateral optic vesicles, cellular diversity, and functionality. Around day 30, brain organoids attempt to assemble optic vesicles, which develop progressively as visible structures within 60 days. These optic vesicle-containing brain organoids (OVB-organoids) constitute a developing optic vesicle's cellular components, including primitive corneal epithelial and lens-like cells, retinal pigment epithelia, retinal progeni…
Pointwise k-Pseudo Metric Space
2021
In this paper, the concept of a k-(quasi) pseudo metric is generalized to the L-fuzzy case, called a pointwise k-(quasi) pseudo metric, which is considered to be a map d:J(LX)×J(LX)⟶[0,∞) satisfying some conditions. What is more, it is proved that the category of pointwise k-pseudo metric spaces is isomorphic to the category of symmetric pointwise k-remote neighborhood ball spaces. Besides, some L-topological structures induced by a pointwise k-quasi-pseudo metric are obtained, including an L-quasi neighborhood system, an L-topology, an L-closure operator, an L-interior operator, and a pointwise quasi-uniformity.

El método mejorado del tocón (ISUM) permite evaluar procesos de erosión del suelo en plantas injertadas utilizando medidas topográficas in situ
2021
[EN] Policymakers, stakeholders and rural inhabitants must be aware of the relevance of soil erosion as an irreversible landdegradation process. This is key to achieve the land degradation neutrality challenge and the sustainability of humankindand natural ecosystems. Agricultural areas are being affected by soil erosion threatening soil quality and, subsequently, food security. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new techniques and methods visually friendly and easy to be accessedto survey and assess the soil erosion concerns. ISUM (Improve Stock Unearthing Method) is a well-contrasted procedureto estimate and map soil mobilisation and erosion rates. To achieve this goal, using the plant …
Indoor Air Quality including Respiratory Viruses
2021
The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in indoor environments is a cause of increasing concern. In this study, three sampling methodologies have been used in order to collect SARS-CoV-2 and 17 other respiratory viruses in indoor air, combined with a new analytical process to analyze respiratory viruses. Different areas of an ophthalmological hospital were investigated for the presence of these airborne viruses. Moreover, indoor air quality (IAQ) parameters (carbon dioxide, CO2; carbon monoxide, CO; nitrogen dioxide, NO2; volatile organic compounds, VOCs; formaldehyde, HCHO; and particulate matter, PM) have been examined to study the relationship between IAQ and airborne viruses. All indoor air and sur…

Intra-Tumour Genetic Heterogeneity and Prognosis in High-Risk Neuroblastoma
2021
Simple Summary Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extra-cranial solid paediatric cancer and is responsible for 15% of childhood cancer deaths. Patients with NB are characterized by presenting a very heterogeneous clinic (inter-tumoural heterogeneity) and also both spatial and temporal intra-tumour heterogeneity (ITH) reflected in their genetic aberrations, which may be the consequence of the coexistence of different microenvironments within the tumour. Applying pangenomic techniques to detect genomic aberrations in different biopsies (solid and liquid) of high risk NB (HR-NB) we have detected spatial ITH in a surprisingly high percentage (almost 40%) of the studied cohort. Moreover, a po…
Fast blue B functionalized silica-polymer composite to evaluate 3,5-dihy-droxyhydrocinnamic acid as biomarker of gluten intake
2021
Celiac disease is an immune-mediated systemic disorder elicited by gluten and related prolamines in genetically susceptible individuals. The current treatment is a strict and lifelong gluten-free diet. However, compliance with the gluten-free diet is not always adequate and many food products contain low concentrations of gluten. The determination of dietary transgressions is a challenge for patients, physicians and dietitians. Alkylresorcinols (AR) have been proposed as sensitive and specific biomarkers of gluten consumption. In this work silica-polymer composites doped with fast blue B reagent (FB) have been used to estimate alkylresorcinols in biological samples. The proposed colorimetri…

2021
This work presents the anthracological and archeopalynological results obtained within the project AGRIWESTMED (ERC AdG 230561), which has involved a comprehensive retrieval of archeobiological remains based on a systematic sampling strategy, beyond the recovery of the usual archeological materials. These surveys were conducted on three sites located in the North of Morocco: the cave of Kaf Taht-el-Ghar, 8 km southeast from Tetuan, and two caves within the El Khil complex, close to Tanger. Both plant micro- and macro-remains (charred wood) were studied through palynological and anthracological analyses, respectively.
