Measuring self‐regulated learning in a junior high school mathematics classroom : Combining aptitude and event measures in digital learning materials
2023
Background Measurement of students' self-regulation skills is an active topic in education research, as effective assessment helps devising support interventions to foster academic achievement. Measures based on event tracing usually require large amounts of data (e.g., MOOCs and large courses), while aptitude measures are often qualitative and need careful interpretation. Precise and interpretable evaluation of self-regulation skills in a normal K-12 classroom thus poses a challenge. Objectives The present study proposes and explores a learning analytics method of combining aptitude and event measures to evaluate student's self-regulation skills. Methods An explorative learning analytics s…

The Work of Special Education Teachers in the Tiered Support System : The Finnish Case
2023
This study investigated primary school special education teachers’ (SETs’) (N = 283) conceptions on their work descriptions and uses of pedagogical documents after a reform in the national support framework. The respondents of this survey reported working mostly in Tiers 1 and 2 when all their tasks (instruction, consultation, and managerial tasks) were considered. The responsibilities of the SETs were, however, more clearly defined in Tier 3. The SETs allocate their work autonomously, but their work description is related to their workload. Clarifications in work descriptions and further elaboration of school’s tiered support functions, emphasizing collaborative practices, are suggested. p…
The degree of projectification and its impact on work flexibility
2023
This study explores the relationship between projectification and its possible impact on work flexibility for Norwegian businesses. As firms are increasingly focused on project-based work, flexibility has become more popular among employers as well as employees. On one hand, projects contribute to flexibility in organizing expertise that solve complex problems. On the other hand, firms offer flexible work arrangements to ensure employee retention, loyalty and effectiveness. The exploratory study collects primary data from Norwegian organizations. We firstly establish the degree of projectification in Norwegian businesses for 2017, 2022, and 2027. Thereafter, we investigate and find that pro…

How salience enhances inhibitory control : An analysis of electro-cortical mechanisms
2023
Stop-signal tasks (SSTs) combined with human electro-cortical recordings (Event-Related Potentials, ERPs) have revealed mechanisms associated with successful stopping (relative to failed), presumably contributing to inhibitory control. The corresponding ERP signatures have been labeled stop N1 (+/- 100-ms latency), stop N2 (200 ms), and stop P3 (160–250 ms), and argued to reflect more sensory-specific (N1) versus more generic (N2, P3) mechanisms. However, stop N1 and stop N2, as well as latencies of stop-P3, appear to be quite inconsistent across studies. The present work addressed the possible influence of stop-signal salience, expecting high salience to induce clear stop N1s but reduced s…
Attività di orientamento all’Università: l’impatto delle buone pratiche
2023
The research was carried out as part of a vast project to combat failure in university studies, the provision of guidance and mentoring for students entering the university for the first time, with a view to improving the services offered. First, it was meant to verify the content validity of a self-assessment questionnaire of one's own study habits (ASU 2021) built and validated more than twenty years ago. The questionnaire invites the student to answer not about what he feels he should do, but about what he actually does. Depending on the study difficulties highlighted by the test, laboratory meetings were arranged to plan orientation activities for students of the last two years of secon…
Improvement of the probiotic growth-stimulating capacity of microalgae extracts by pulsed electric fields treatment
2023
This study aimed to investigate the nutritional character (carbohydrates, proteins, pigments, and phycocyanin), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the capability of simulating the growth of Lactobacillus rhamnosus of different extracts from C. vulgaris and A. platensis by means of the application of conventional aqueous extraction procedure and pulsed electric field (PEF) extraction technology. It was confirmed a significantly improved nutritional profile of Chlorella and Spirulina extracts obtained by PEF technology pre-treatment (3 kV/cm, 100 kJ/kg), with specifically higher values in total carbohydrate, Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, and carotenoids content, and TAC. Additionally, Spiru…
Lexical Richness in the Texts of Norwegian Lower Secondary School Students: The Effect of Specific Extramural English Activities.
2023
This thesis explores the vocabulary of a selection of 8th grade students and the effect that Extramural English activities can have on their vocabulary knowledge. The vocabulary of the students was based on measurements of lexical richness, these were, lexical diversity, lexical density, and lexical sophistication. Other variables such as off-list words and total words were also looked at. The primary focus is on activities such as watching movies/tv-series, listening to audiobooks/radio programs/podcasts. However, other Extramural English activities are also examined with regards to their effect on vocabulary. In this study the data is collected through the TRAWL project, access to student…

Genetic and pharmacological modulation of DNA mismatch repair heterogeneous tumors promotes immune surveillance.
2023
Patients affected by colorectal cancer (CRC) with DNA mismatch repair deficiency (MMRd), often respond to immune checkpoint blockade therapies, while those with mismatch repair-proficient (MMRp) tumors generally do not. Interestingly, a subset of MMRp CRCs contains variable fractions of MMRd cells, but it is unknown how their presence impacts immune surveillance. We asked whether modulation of the MMRd fraction in MMR heterogeneous tumors acts as an endogenous cancer vaccine by promoting immune surveillance. To test this hypothesis, we use isogenic MMRp (Mlh1+/+) and MMRd (Mlh1-/-) mouse CRC cells. MMRp/MMRd cells mixed at different ratios are injected in immunocompetent mice and tumor reje…
Multispecies coinfections and presence of antibiotics shape resistance and fitness costs in a pathogenic bacterium
2023
Increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a challenge for treatment of bacterial diseases. In real life, bacterial infections are typically embedded within complex multispecies communities and influenced by the environment, which can shape costs and benefits of AMR. However, knowledge of such interactions and their implications for AMR in vivo is limited. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated fitness-related traits of a pathogenic bacterium (Flavobacterium columnare) in its fish host, capturing the effects of bacterial antibiotic resistance, coinfections between bacterial strains and metazoan parasites (fluke Diplostomum pseudospathaceum) and antibiotic exposure. We quantifie…
A novel 2,6-bis(benzoxazolyl)phenol macrocyclic chemosensor with enhanced fluorophore properties by photoinduced intramolecular proton transfer
2023
Macrocyclic ligand L, in which a 2,6-bis(2-benzoxazolyl)phenol (bis-HBO) group is incorporated in triethylenetetramine, was designed and synthesized with the aim of creating a chemosensor with high selectivity and specificity for metal cations in an aqueous environment. The availability of several proton acceptors and donors, and amine and phenol hydroxy groups, respectively, affects the keto-enol equilibrium in both the ground and excited states, and the ligand properties show dependence on the pH of the solution. L is fluorescent in the visible range, through an excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The results of an exhaustive characterization of L by spectrosco…
Association of accelerometer‐measured physical activity and midlife income : A Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study
2023
This study investigated the association between physical activity (PA) and midlife income. The population-based data comprised employed members of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 (N = 2797). Using binned scatterplots and polynomial regressions, we evaluated the association between accelerometer-measured moderate PA (MPA), vigorous PA (VPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) at 46 years old and register-based income at 50 years old. The models were adjusted for sex, marital status, number of children, education, adolescent PA, occupational physical strenuousness, and time preference. We found MPA (p < 0.001), VPA (p < 0.05), and MVPA (p < 0.001) to associate curvilinearly with income…
Partially time invariant panel data regression
2023
When dealing with panel data, considering the variation over time of the variable of interest allows to get rid of potential individual effects. Even though the outcome variable has a continuous distribution, its variation over time can be equal to zero with a strictly positive probability and thus its distribution is a mixture of a mass at zero and a continuous distribution. We introduce a parametric statistical model based on conditional mixtures, build estimators for the parameters related to the conditional probability of no variation and to the conditional expectation related to the continuous part of the distribution and derive their asymptotic consistency and normality under a specif…

Planting in the pandemic : surveillance on social media
2023
This article looks at interest-driven and informal social media practices that have flourished in the pandemic period and its ensuing renaissance of domesticity. It investigates how tending plants and discussing them on social media serve as a particular site for connecting around loving and taking care of plants. Its focus is on the discursive means with which posters – guided by social media algorithms – rhetorically co-construct a morally acceptable version of a pandemic lifestyle around houseplants. More specifically, drawing on multimodal discourse studies, critical sociolinguistics and work on digital surveillance, it investigates how members of a Finland-based social media site obser…
Halogen-Bonded [N–I–N]− Complexes with Symmetric or Asymmetric Three-Center–Four-Electron Bonds
2023
A series of LH[Z–I–Z] halogen(I) complexes, where Z = saccharinato or phthalimido anions and LH = pyridinium, pyrazinium, tetrabutyl (TBA)- or tetramethylammonium (TMA) cations, were prepared, structurally characterized, and discussed as complexes consisting of a [N–I–N]− anion with a three-center–four-electron (3c-4e) halogen bond, and a hydrogen-bonding (pyridinium or pyrazinium) or inert (TBA or TMA) cation. The symmetric [N–I–N]− anion, reminiscent of the triiodide [I–I–I]− anion, is found to be structurally equivalent to its cationic analogue [N–I–N]+ with N–I bond lengths of 2.26 Å. In contrast to the homoleptic [N–I–N]+ complexes, asymmetry of the N–I bond lengths (2.21 and 2.28 Å) w…

Quali forme di narrazione per eventi come la Shoah? Sulla tropologia di Hayden White.
2023
The critical debate resulting from the rhetorical or linguistic turn brings out within historical research a tension between narrative and documentation that, to the risk of making the boundary between history and the novel implied by the centrality of the role of narrative increasingly evanescent, counterpoints an appeal to the status of evidence, invoked by some historians, which in turn is not without its criticality. In particular, we take as a point of departure Hayden Whyte's Forms of History from Reality to Narrative, in which historiographical research is characterized with reference to the ability to follow those organizing principles peculiar to literary experiments as modes of hi…
Base-Controlled Regiospecific Mono-Benzylation/Allylation and Diallylation of 4-Aryl-5-indolyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione : Thio-Aza Allyl Rearrangement
2023
The regiospecific S-benzylation/allylation of two 4-aryl-5-indolyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione precursors was carried out using Et3N as a base. Allyl group migration from exocyclic sulfur to the triazole nitrogen (N3) was successfully achieved in a short time via thermal fusion without the need for any catalyst. The allylation of indole nitrogen, along with exocyclic sulfur or triazole nitrogen (N3), was carried out using K2CO3 as stronger base. S,N-Diallylated products were converted to N,N-diallylated analogues using a simple fusion approach. Structural analyses of the two newly synthesized hybrids 2b and 5b investigated via the X-ray diffraction of a single crystal combined with Hirshfeld ca…

Connecting Sustainability Organizational Models with SDGs
2023
The scientific works have been divided into 10 chapters. Hence, each chapter deeper analyzes the conference’s main topic. Thus, focusing on the study of the social dimension of sustainability from the human resource management point of view, several studies analyze its influence on social performance, as well as its consideration when applying quality management principles and practices as a driver to the social dimension of the organization since these practices could lead to the development of a sustainable orientation. Additionally, it is also important to analyze how work-family conflict and professional stress among financial workers and their relationships levers to burnout syndrome. …
Neural phoneme discrimination in variable speech in newborns – associations with dyslexia risk and later language skills
2023
AbstractA crucial skill in infant language acquisition is learning of the native language phonemes. This requires the ability to group complex sounds into distinct auditory categories based on their shared features. Problems in phonetic learning have been suggested to underlie language learning difficulties in dyslexia, a developmental reading-skill deficit. We investigated auditory abilities important for language acquisition in newborns with or without a familial risk for dyslexia with electrophysiological mismatch responses (MMRs). We presented vowel changes in a sequence of acoustically varying vowels, requiring grouping of the stimuli to two phoneme categories. The vowel changes elicit…
