The accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in the treatment of multicentric invasive breast cancer using a subareolar injection of tracer.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and the accuracy of sentinel lymph node biopsy in multicentric breast cancer (MBC) performed by means of a subareolar (SA) injection of both 99Tc-labeled human albumin colloid and lymphazurin. METHODS: Between January 2002 and October 2007, 34 patients with MBC with clinically negative axilla underwent sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) followed by total axillary node dissection (AD). What is the Meaning of an Early Anastomotic Recurrence after Curative Right Hemicolectomy? A Synchronous, Metachronous, or What Else?

In this paper we present a case of unexpected early local recurrence after surgery for colon cancer. Notably, an anastomotic recurrence was diagnosed two months after curative right hemicolectomy. Accurate preoperative endoscopic and radiological explorations were carried out, the resection was performed according to the oncological surgical principles, and the pathologic report confirmed the oncological radicality of the treatment performed. Therefore, the precocity of local recurrence appeared surprising, and led us to carry out a review of the literature in order to look into its possible explanations. The results of this research are presented.

In this report the authors outline the main historical aspects of haemorrhoids after a thorough review of the literature. The first texts concerning haemorrhoids are the ancient Egyptian papyruses. The twenty centuries of the history of haemorrhoids are marked by multiple pathogenetic theories, and of these the vascular and the sliding of the anal mucosa are still valid. From an analysis of the historical texts and the most recent publications, we deduce that the principles of therapy are substantially unchanged since the days of Hippocrates. γδ T cells usually infiltrate many different types of cancer, but it is unclear whether they inhibit or promote tumor progression. Moreover, properties of tumor-infiltrating γδ T cells and those in the corresponding normal tissue remain largely unknown. Here we have studied features of γδ T cells in colorectal cancer, normal colon tissue and peripheral blood, and correlated their levels with clinicopathologic hallmarks. PURPOSE: In breast cancer staging, the need for intraoperative sentinel lymph node (SLN) evaluation has still not been adequately established. This study investigates the impact of intraoperative frozen section (FS) evaluation of SLN to avoid subsequent axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) in patients with positive SLN. METHODS: A retrospective review of 364 breast cancer patients undergoing SLN biopsy with intraoperative FS evaluation of SLN was performed. Several studies report a higher rate of papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC) in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT), indicating a possible correlation between the two diseases. We studied a group of 89 subjects undergoing surgery for thyroid carcinomas compared with a control group of 89 subjects operated on for normofunctioning goiter, and a second group of 47 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for HT. The purpose of this study was to edit a renovated thyroidectomy difficulty scale (rTDS) in order to identify underlying thyroid diseases with a longer operative time and higher technical difficulty, also considering preservation of recurrent laryngeal nerve. We developed a renovated scale with a maximum score of 20 points by creating a form in which five variables were considered: vascularity, friability, mobility/fibrosis, gland size and difficulty in preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. TP53 mutations and S-phase fraction but not DNA-ploidy are independent prognostic indicators in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma
