K− over K+ multiplicity ratio for kaons produced in DIS with a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.010.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall …

Quasi-elastic polarization-transfer measurements on the deuteron in anti-parallel kinematics

We present measurements of the polarization-transfer components in the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, covering a previously unexplored kinematic region with large positive (anti-parallel) missing momentum, pmiss, up to 220MeV/c, and Q2=0.65 (GeV/c)2. These measurements, performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), were motivated by theoretical calculations which predict small final-state interaction (FSI) effects in these kinematics, making them favorable for searching for medium modifications of bound nucleons in nuclei. Search for muoproduction of X(3872) at COMPASS and indication of a new state X˜(3872)

Abstract We have searched for exclusive production of exotic charmonia in the reaction μ + N → μ + ( J / ψ π + π − ) π ± N ′ using COMPASS data collected with incoming muons of 160 GeV/c and 200 GeV/c momentum. In the J / ψ π + π − mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 σ. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the X ( 3872 ) . The shape of the π + π − mass distribution from the observed decay into J / ψ π + π − shows disagreement with previous observations for X ( 3872 ) . The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of X ( 3872 ) with C = − 1 predicted b…

Spectra and correlations of Λ andΛ¯produced in 340-GeV/cΣ−+Cand 260-GeV/cn+Cinteractions

We have measured the production of strange baryons and antibaryons in 340-GeV/c Sigma /sup -/+C and 260-GeV/c n+C interactions. The single x/sub F/ distributions show the expected leading particle effect, and the single p/sub t//sup 2/ distributions show a distinct nonthermal behavior. The x/sub F/ distributions of Lambda - Lambda pairs indicate two different phase space distributions for the two coincident baryons. On the other hand two Lambda 's show identical distributions. Momentum conservation during the formation process may represent a significant source for the observed behavior.

Lowest- Q2 measurement of the γp → Δ reaction: Probing the pionic contribution

To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-2.28 +/- 0.29_{stat+syst} +/- 0.20_{model})%, and Re(S_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+}^{3/2}) = (-4.81 +/- 0.27_{stat+syst} +/- 0.26_{model})%. Experimental investigation of transverse spin asymmetries in muon-p SIDIS processes: Sivers asymmetries

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3 target. The Sivers asymmetry of the proton has been extracted in the Bjorken x range 0.003 0.03. The asymmetry is different from zero and positive also in the low x region, where sea-quarks dominate. The kinematic dependence of the asymmetry has also been investigated and results are given for various intervals of hadron and virtual photon fractional energy. Measurement of the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton at Intermediate $Q^2$

Background: Generalized polarizabilities (GPs) are important observables to describe the nucleon structure, and measurements of these observables are still scarce. Purpose: This paper presents details of a virtual Compton scattering (VCS) experiment, performed at the A1 setup at the Mainz Microtron by studying the $e p \to e p \gamma$ reaction. Contribution of exclusive diffractive processes to the measured azimuthal asymmetries in SIDIS

Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. Search for the exoticΞ−−(1860)resonance in340GeV∕cΣ−-nucleus interactions

We report on a high statistics search for the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{-}}(1860)$ resonance in ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$-nucleus collisions at $340\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{GeV}∕c$. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ candidates above background. Search for exclusive photoproduction ofZc±(3900) at COMPASS

A search for the exclusive production of the Z(c)(+/-)(3900) hadron by virtual photons has been performed in the channel Z(c)(+/-)(3900). J/Psi pi(+/-). The data cover the range from 7GeV to 19GeV in the centre-of- mass energy of the photon-nucleon system. The full set of the COMPASS data set collected with a muon beam between 2002 and 2011 has been used. An upper limit for the ratio BR(Z(c)(+/-)(3900)-> J/Psi pi(+/-)) x sigma(gamma N) -> Z(c)(+/-)(3900) N/sigma gamma N -> J/Psi N 3.7 x10(-3) has been established at the confidence level of90%. Noise and radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers exposed to electromagnetic and hadronic radiation

For the electron arm tracking system in the KAOS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI a detector based on 2 m long scintillating fibres read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is planned. Because of the detector's close proximity to the intense electron beam a study of noise and radiation damage in SiPM has been performed. A sample of devices was exposed directly to a 14 MeV electron beam and to a mixed radiation field in the experimental area. First noticeable effects are a large increase in the dark count rate and a severe loss of the gain uniformity.

First measurement of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons using SIDIS data

The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. Efficiency studies for a tracking detector based on square 1.5m long scintillating fibers read out by SiPM

Abstract A tracking detector based on 1.5 m long scintillating fibers is being developed for the electron arm of the KAOS spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Measurements on light attenuation, particle detection efficiencies and accidental coincidence rates with a prototype set-up using 2 × 2 mm 2 fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are presented. The highest efficiency at the lowest accidental coincidence rate was reached for high trigger thresholds at the largest SiPM bias voltages. Particle tracking in kaon electroproduction with cathode-charge sampling in multi-wire proportional chambers

Abstract Wire chambers are routinely operated as tracking detectors in magnetic spectrometers at high-intensity continuous electron beams. Especially in experiments studying reactions with small cross-sections the reaction yield is limited by the background rate in the chambers. One way to determine the track of a charged particle through a multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) is the measurement of the charge distribution induced on its cathodes. Beam-normal single spin asymmetry in elastic electron scattering off 28Si and 90Zr

We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{n}}$ in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized electrons off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr at $Q^{2}=0.04\, \mathrm{GeV}^2/c^2$. The studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on $^{12}$C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry is observed in the mass regime from $^{12}$C to $^{90}$Zr.

Components of polarization-transfer to a bound proton in a deuteron measured by quasi-elastic electron scattering

We report the first measurements of the transverse (Px and Py) and longitudinal (Pz) components of the polarization transfer to a bound proton in the deuteron via the H2(e→,e′p→) reaction, over a wide range of missing momentum. A precise determination of the electron beam polarization reduces the systematic uncertainties on the individual components to a level that enables a detailed comparison to a state-of-the-art calculation of the deuteron using free-proton electromagnetic form factors. We observe very good agreement between the measured and the calculated Px/Pz ratios, but deviations of the individual components. The influence of Fermi motion on the comparison of the polarization transfer to a proton in elastic e→p and quasi-elastic e→A scattering

Abstract A comparison between polarization-transfer to a bound proton in quasi-free kinematics by the A ( e → , e ′ p → ) knockout reaction and that in elastic scattering off a free proton can provide information on the characteristics of the bound proton. In the past the reported measurements have been compared to those of a free proton with zero initial momentum. We introduce, for the first time, expressions for the polarization-transfer components when the proton is initially in motion and compare them to the 2H data measured at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). Even though both experimental and theoretical activities on hypernuclear physics have been extended by a number of international projects, direct measurements on hypernuclear magnetic moments and studies of hypernuclei at extreme isospins have never been performed. Interplay among transversity induced asymmetries in hadron leptoproduction

In the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark several left-right asymmetries are possible for the hadrons in the jet. When only one unpolarized hadron is selected, it exhibits an azimuthal modulation known as Collins effect. When a pair of oppositely charged hadrons is observed, three asymmetries can be considered, a di-hadron asymmetry and two single hadron asymmetries. Production of hypernuclei in peripheral relativistic ion collisions

Within a dynamical and statistical approach we study the main regularities in production of hypernuclei coming from projectile and target residues in relativistic ion collisions. We demonstrate that yields of hypernuclei increase considerably above the energy threshold for Lambda hyperons, and there is a saturation for yields of single hypernuclei with increasing the beam energy up to few TeV. Production of specific hypernuclei depend very much on the isotopic composition of the projectile, and this gives a chance to obtain exotic hypernuclei that may be difficult to reach in traditional hypernuclear experiments. Search at the Mainz Microtron for light massive gauge bosons relevant for the muon g-2 anomaly.

A massive, but light, Abelian U(1) gauge boson is a well-motivated possible signature of physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. In this Letter, the search for the signal of such a U(1) gauge boson in electron-positron pair production at the spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron is described. Exclusion limits in the mass range of 40  MeV/c^{2} to 300  MeV/c^{2}, with a sensitivity in the squared mixing parameter of as little as ε^{2}=8×10^{-7} are presented. Spin alignment and violation of the OZI rule in exclusive ω and ϕ production in pp collisions

Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons $\omega$ and $\phi$ is measured with a 190 GeV$/c$ proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable $x_{F}$ of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on $x_{F}$ and on the invariant mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ of the system formed by fast proton $p_\mathrm{fast}$ and vector meson $V$ is discussed in terms of diffractive production of $p_\mathrm{fast}V$ resonances in competition with central production. The most recent results and the future physics program of the high precision electron-scattering experiment at MAMI are briefly outlined. The A1 high-resolution spectrometers facility allows for a unique quality of virtual photon experiments. Transverse spin effects in hadron-pair production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering

First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron) and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years 2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single hadron production. Decay pion spectroscopy: a new approach

We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV {\alpha}-particles. Measurements of the induced polarization in the quasi-elastic A(e,e′p→) process in non-coplanar kinematics

Abstract We report measurements of the induced polarization P → of protons knocked out from 2H and 12C via the A ( e , e ′ p → ) reaction. We have studied the dependence of P → on two kinematic variables: the missing momentum p miss and the “off-coplanarity” angle ϕ p q between the scattering and reaction planes. Onset of nuclear vaporization inAu197+197Au collisions

1993

Multifragmentation has been measured for [sup 197]Au+[sup 197]Au collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100, 250, and 400 MeV. The mean fragment multiplicity increases monotonically with the charged particle multiplicity at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 MeV, but decreases for central collisions with incident energy, consistent with the onset of nuclear vaporization. Molecular dynamics calculations follow some trends but underpredict the observed fragment multiplicities. Including the statistical decay of excited residues improves the agreement for peripheral collisions but worsens it for central collisions.

Determination of quadrupole strengths in the γ∗p→Δ(1232) transition at Q2=0.20(GeV/c)2

Abstract We report new precise p ( e → , e ′ p ) π 0 measurements at the peak of the Δ + ( 1232 ) resonance at Q 2 = 0.20 ( GeV / c ) 2 performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The new data are sensitive to both the electric (E2) and the Coulomb (C2) quadrupole amplitudes of the γ ∗ N → Δ transition. They yield precise quadrupole to dipole amplitude ratios: CMR = ( − 5.09 ± 0.28 stat + sys ± 0.30 model ) % and EMR = ( − 1.96 ± 0.68 stat + sys ± 0.41 model ) % for M 1 + 3 / 2 = ( 39.57 ± 0.75 stat + sys ± 0.40 model ) ( 10 −3 / m π + ) . The new results are in disagreement with Constituent Quark Model predictions and in qualitative agreement with models that account for mesonic contributions…

Sivers asymmetry extracted in SIDIS at the hard scales of the Drell-Yan process at COMPASS

Antiproton over proton and K$^-$ over K$^+$ multiplicity ratios at high $z$ in DIS

The $\bar{\rm p} $ over p multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering for the first time using (anti-) protons carrying a large fraction of the virtual-photon energy, $z>0.5$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam impinging on an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2$ > 1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Measurements of the electron-helicity asymmetry in the quasi-elastic A(e→,e′p) process

Abstract We present measurements of the electron helicity asymmetry in quasi-elastic proton knockout from 2H and 12C nuclei by polarized electrons. This asymmetry depends on the fifth structure function, is antisymmetric with respect to the scattering plane, and vanishes in the absence of final-state interactions, and thus it provides a sensitive tool for their study. Our kinematics cover the full range in off-coplanarity angle ϕ p q , with a polar angle θ p q coverage up to about 8°. First measurement of proton's charge form factor at very low $Q^2$ with initial state radiation

We report on a new experimental method based on initial-state radiation (ISR) in e-p scattering, in which the radiative tail of the elastic e-p peak contains information on the proton charge form factor ($G_E^p$) at extremely small $Q^2$. The ISR technique was validated in a dedicated experiment using the spectrometers of the A1-Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). This provided first measurements of $G_E^p$ for $0.001\leq Q^2\leq 0.004 (GeV/c)^2$.

Fragment Flow and the Multifragmentation Phase Space

Fragment distributions have been measured for Au+Au collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 and 1000 MeV. A high detection efficiency for fragments was obtained by combining the ALADIN spectrometer and the MSU-Miniball/WU-Miniwall array. At both energies the maximum multiplicity of intermediate mass fragments (IMF) normalized to the size of the decaying system is about one IMF per 30 nucleons but the element distributions show significant differences. Within a coalescence picture the suppression of heavy fragments in central collisions at [ital E]/[ital A]=100 MeV may be related to a reduction of the density in momentum space which is caused by the collective expansion.

Spectroscopy of a Be-10(Lambda) hypernucleus was carried out at JLab Hall C using the (e, e' K+) reaction. A new magnetic spectrometer system (SPL+ HES+ HKS), specifically designed for high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy, was used to obtain an energy spectrum with a resolution of similar to 0.78 MeV (FWHM). The well-calibrated spectrometer system of the present experiment using p(e, e' K+)Lambda, Sigma(0) reactions allowed us to determine the energy levels; and the binding energy of the ground-state peak (mixture of 1(-) and 2(-) states) was found to be B-Lambda = 8.55 +/- 0.07(stat.) +/- 0.11(sys.) Ground-state binding energy of HΛ4 from high-resolution decay-pion spectroscopy

Abstract A systematic study on the Λ ground state binding energy of hyperhydrogen H Λ 4 measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI is presented. New results for the double spin asymmetry A(1)(p) and the proton longitudinal spin structure function g(1)(p) are presented. They were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using polarised 200 GeV muons scattered off a longitudinally polarised NH3 target. The data were collected in 2011 and complement those recorded in 2007 at 160 GeV, in particular at lower values of x. The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. Status of the J-PARC E07, Systematic Study of Double Strangeness Nuclei with the Hybrid Emulsion Method

The current status of the J-PARC E07 experiment and two typical events, a _ΛΛBe hypernuclear event named “MINO” and \(_{\Xi }^{15}\text{C}\) hypernuclear event named “IBUKI”, are presented. J-PARC E07 is the most complex emulsion experiment so far to investigate double hypernuclei. The physics run at the K1.8 beam line in the J-PARC hadron facility and photographic development of all emulsion sheets have been completed. The emulsion sheets are presently being analyzed with dedicated optical microscopes. Current statistics are estimated to be about twice that of KEK-PS E373. Longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A1p and spin-dependent structure function g1p of the proton at small values of x and Q2

Abstract We present a precise measurement of the proton longitudinal double-spin asymmetry A 1 p and the proton spin-dependent structure function g 1 p at photon virtualities 0.006 ( GeV / c ) 2 Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 in the Bjorken x range of 4 × 10 − 5 x 4 × 10 − 2 . The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of 160 GeV and 200 GeV . The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of x , the measured values of A 1 p and g 1 p are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of x .

Multiplicities of charged pions and charged hadrons from deep-inelastic scattering of muons off an isoscalar target

Multiplicities of charged pions and charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x , the relative virtual-photon energy y and the relative hadron energy z . Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ( 6 LiD). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality Q2>1(GeV/c)2 , 0.004 1(GeV/c$)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.2 < z < 0.85$ and $0.1 < y < 0.7$. In addition, a leading-order pQCD analysis was performed using the pion multiplicity results to extract quark fragmentation functions.

Search for Light Gauge Bosons of the Dark Sector at the Mainz Microtron

A new exclusion limit for the electromagnetic production of a light U(1) gauge boson {\gamma}' decaying to e^+e^- was determined by the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron. Such light gauge bosons appear in several extensions of the standard model and are also discussed as candidates for the interaction of dark matter with standard model matter. In electron scattering from a heavy nucleus, the existing limits for a narrow state coupling to e^+e^- were reduced by nearly an order of magnitude in the range of the lepton pair mass of 210 MeV/c^2 < m_e^+e^- < 300 MeV/c^2. Formation Of Hypernuclei In Evaporation And Fission Processes

There are excellent opportunities to produce excited heavy hyper residues in relativistic hadron and peripheral heavy-ion collisions. We investigate the disintegration of such residues into hyper nuclei via evaporation of baryons and light clusters and their fission. Previously these processes were well known for normal nuclei as the decay channels at low excitation energies. We have generalized these models for the case of hyper-matter. Leading order determination of the gluon polarisation from DIS events with high-pThadron pairs

We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c)(2) including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised (LiD)-Li-6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x(g) covering the range 0.04 < x(g) < 0.27. Exclusive muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. Novel optical interferometry of synchrotron radiation for absolute electron beam energy measurements

Abstract A novel interferometric method is presented for the measurement of the absolute energy of electron beams. In the year 2016, a pioneering experiment was performed using a 195 MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The experimental setup consisted of two collinear magnetic undulators as sources of coherent optical synchrotron light and a high-resolving grating monochromator. Beam energy measurements required the variation of the relative undulator distance in the decimeter range and the analysis of the intensity oscillation length in the interference spectrum. High-Precision Determination of the Electric and Magnetic Form Factors of the Proton

New precise results of a measurement of the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section performed at the Mainz Microtron MAMI are presented. About 1400 cross sections were measured with negative four-momentum transfers squared up to Q^2=1 (GeV/c)^2 with statistical errors below 0.2%. The electric and magnetic form factors of the proton were extracted by fits of a large variety of form factor models directly to the cross sections. The form factors show some features at the scale of the pion cloud. The charge and magnetic radii are determined to be r_E=0.879(5)(stat.)(4)(syst.)(2)(model)(4)(group) fm and r_M=0.777(13)(stat.)(9)(syst.)(5)(model)(2)(group) fm.

Comparison of recoil polarization in the C12(e→,e′p→) process for protons extracted from s and p shells

Abstract We present the first measurements of the double ratio of the polarization-transfer components ( P x ′ / P z ′ ) p / ( P x ′ / P z ′ ) s for knock-out protons from the s and p shells in C 12 measured by the C 12 ( e → , e ′ p → ) reaction in quasi-elastic kinematics. Observation of a New Narrow Axial-Vector Mesona1(1420)

The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190  GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). New analysis of ηπ tensor resonances measured at the COMPASS experiment

We present a new amplitude analysis of the $\eta\pi$ $D$-wave in $\pi^- p\to \eta\pi^- p$ measured by COMPASS. Employing an analytical model based on the principles of the relativistic $S$-matrix, we find two resonances that can be identified with the $a_2(1320)$ and the excited $a_2^\prime(1700)$, and perform a comprehensive analysis of their pole positions. For the mass and width of the $a_2$ we find $M=(1307 \pm 1 \pm 6)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(112 \pm 1 \pm 8)$~MeV, and for the excited state $a_2^\prime$ we obtain $M=(1720 \pm 10 \pm 60)$~MeV and $\Gamma=(280\pm 10 \pm 70)$~MeV, respectively.

Unpolarized and polarized elementary kaon electroproduction cross sections measured at MAMI

Present and future research into the electroproduction of kaons plays an im- portant role at Mainz Microtron MAMI. With the Kaos spectrometer employed for kaon detection in the multi-spectrometer facility, cross section measurements of the exclusive p(e;e 0 K + ); 0 reactions at low momentum transfers have been performed. Spin asymmetry A1d and the spin-dependent structure function g1d of the deuteron at low values of x and Q2

Abstract We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry A 1 d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g 1 d at Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 and 4 × 10 −5 x 2.5 × 10 −2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The measured A 1 d and g 1 d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole range of x.

In-beam tests of scintillating fibre detectors at MAMI and at GSI

The performance of scintillating fibre detectors was studied with electrons at the spectrometer facility of the Mainz microtron MAMI, as well as in a C-12 beam of 2 AGeV energy and in a beam of different particle species at GSI. Multi-anode photomultipliers were used to read out one or more bundles of 128 fibres each in different geometries. For electrons a time resolution of FWHM = 1 ns was measured in a single detector plane with a detection efficiency epsilon &gt; 99%. A time resolution of 310 ps (FWHM) between two planes of fibres was achieved for carbon ions, leading to a FWHM = 220 ps for a single detector. Production of exotic hypernuclei from excited nuclear systems

We show that within a hybrid two-stage approach one can explain novel experimental data on the production of hypernuclei emitted from projectile residues in relativistic ion collisions. This reaction proceeds via formation of intermediate moderately excited hypernuclear systems, which decay into conventional nuclei and hyperfragments afterward. With a similar reaction mechanism one can also obtain weakly bound exotic hypernuclei (such as $\ensuremath{\Lambda}n$ and H-dibaryons), which may not be easily accessible in other processes.

Polarization-transfer measurement to a large-virtuality bound proton in the deuteron

2017

Possible differences between free and bound protons may be observed in the ratio of polarization-transfer components, $P'_x/P'_z$. We report the measurement of $P'_x/P'_z$, in the $^2\textrm{H}(\vec{e},e^{\prime}\vec{p})n$ reaction at low and high missing momenta. Observed increasing deviation of $P'_x/P'_z$ from that of a free proton as a function of the virtuality, similar to that observed in \hefour, indicates that the effect in nuclei is due to the virtuality of the knock-out proton and not due to the average nuclear density. The measured differences from calculations assuming free-proton form factors ($\sim10\%$), may indicate in-medium modifications.

Characterisation and calibration of a scintillating fibre detector with > 4000 multi-anode photomultiplier channels

In the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron a high-resolution coordinate detector for high-energy particles is operated. It consists of scintillating fibres with diameters of 4000 multi-anode photomultiplier channels. It is one of the most modern focal-plane detectors for magnetic spectrometers world-wide. Characterisation of radiation damage in silicon photomultipliers with a Monte Carlo model

Measured response functions and low photon yield spectra of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) were compared to multi-photoelectron pulse-height distributions generated by a Monte Carlo model. Characteristic parameters for SiPM were derived. The devices were irradiated with 14 MeV electrons at the Mainz microtron MAMI. It is shown that the first noticeable damage consists of an increase in the rate of dark pulses and the loss of uniformity in the pixel gains. Higher radiation doses reduced also the photon detection efficiency. The results are especially relevant for applications of SiPM in fibre detectors at high luminosity experiments.

The spin-dependent structure function of the proton g1p and a test of the Bjorken sum rule

Abstract The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A 1 p , has been measured at COMPASS in deep-inelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. Measurement of the p(e,e′π+)n reaction close to threshold and at low Q2

The cross section of the $p(e,e'\pi^+)n$ reaction has been measured for five kinematic settings at an invariant mass of $W = 1094$ MeV and for a four-momentum transfer of $Q^2 = 0.078$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The measurement has been performed at MAMI using a new short-orbit spectrometer (SOS) of the A1 collaboration, intended for detection of low-energy pions. Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high $p_T$

Spectroscopy of the neutron-rich hypernucleusHeΛ7from electron scattering

The missing mass spectroscopy of the HeΛ7 hypernucleus was performed using the Li7(e, e ′K+)HeΛ7 reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The Λ- binding energy of the ground-state (1/2+) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being BΛ=5.55±0.10stat.±0.11sys.MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at BΛ=3.65±0.20stat. ±0.11sys.MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2+ and 5/2+ states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of Λ, which makes an unstable state in He6 stable against neutron emission.

Flavour Separation of Helicity Distributions from Deep Inelastic Muon-Deuteron Scattering

We present a LO evaluation of helicity densities of valence, \Delta u_v+\Delta d_v, non-strange sea, \Delta\bar{u}+\Delta\bar{d}, and strange quarks, \Delta s (assumed to be equal to \Delta\bar{s}). They have been obtained from the inclusive asymmetry A_{3,d} and the semi-inclusive asymmetries A^{\pi+}_{1,d}, A^{\pi-}_{1,d}, A^{K+}_{1,d}, A^{K-}_{1,d} measured in polarised deep inelastic muon-deuteron scattering. The Polarised Valence Quark Distribution from semi-inclusive DIS

The semi-inclusive difference asymmetry A^{h^{+}-h^{-}} for hadrons of opposite charge has been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data were collected in the years 2002-2004 using a 160 GeV polarised muon beam scattered off a large polarised ^6LiD target and cover the range 0.006 &lt; x &lt; 0.7 and 1 &lt; Q^2 &lt; 100 (GeV/c)^2. In leading order QCD (LO) the asymmetry A_d^{h^{+}-h^{-}} measures the valence quark polarisation and provides an evaluation of the first moment of Delta u_v + Delta d_v which is found to be equal to 0.40 +- 0.07 (stat.) +- 0.05 (syst.) over the measured range of x at Q^2 = 10 (GeV/c)^2. New Insight in the $Q^2$-Dependence of Proton Generalized Polarizabilities

Virtual Compton scattering on the proton has been investigated at three yet unexplored values of the four-momentum transfer $Q^2$: 0.10, 0.20 and 0.45 GeV$^2$, at the Mainz Microtron. Fits performed using either the low-energy theorem or dispersion relations allowed the extraction of the structure functions $P_{LL} -P_{TT} / \epsilon$ and $P_{LT}$, as well as the electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities $\alpha_{E1}(Q^2)$ and $\beta_{M1}(Q^2)$. These new results show a smooth and rapid fall-off of $\alpha_{E1}(Q^2)$, in contrast to previous measurements at $Q^2$ = 0.33 GeV$^2$, and provide for the first time a precise mapping of $\beta_{M1}(Q^2)$ in the low-$Q^2$ region.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries for pions and kaons in muon-deuteron DIS

2008

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions.

Measurement of propagation time dispersion in a scintillator

2007

One contribution to the time resolution of a scintillation detector is the signal time spread due to path length variations of the detected photons from a point source. In an experimental study a rectangular scintillator was excited by means of a fast pulsed ultraviolet laser at different positions along its longitudinal axis. Timing measurements with a photomultiplier tube in a detection plane displaced from the scintillator end face showed a correlation between signal time and tube position indicating only a small distortion of photon angles during transmission. International audience; Negatively charged pions from two-body decays of stopped _Lambda^4H hypernuclei were studied in 2012 at the Mainz Microtron MAMI, Germany. Future use of silicon photomultipliers for Kaos at MAMI and P¯ANDA at FAIR

A characterisation of scintillating fibres with silicon photomultiplier read-out was performed in view of their possible application in fibre tracking detector systems. Such a concept is being considered for the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI and as a time-of-flight start detector for the hypernuclear physics programme at the PANDA experiment of the FAIR project. Results on particle detection effciency and time resolution are discussed. In summary, the silicon devices are very suitable for the detection of the low light yield from scintillating fibres insofar a trigger scheme is found to cope with the noise rate characteristics.

Silicon Detector Telescope for proton detection in electron scattering reactions at MAMI

Abstract A new Silicon Detector Telescope has been constructed and installed within the experimental facility of the A1 collaboration at Mainz Microtron, with the goal to detect low-energy protons. It consists of seven silicon layers for energy and angle measurement and a plastic scintillator for triggering purposes. The detector subtends a solid angle up to 88 msr, depending on the distance from the target and covers the proton kinetic energy range of 25–41  MeV with the mean energy resolution σ E = 0.47 MeV , operating at 500 kHz. Exploring the potential of antihyperons in nuclei with antiprotons

A simple method to explore the interaction of antihyperons in nuclei by exclusive hyperon-antihyperon pair production close to threshold in antiproton nucleus interactions is proposed. Due to energy and momentum conservation event-by-event transverse momentum correlations of the produced hyperons and antihyperons contain information on the difference between their potentials. Study of Σ(1385) and Ξ(1321) hyperon and antihyperon production in deep inelastic muon scattering

Large samples of \Lambda, \Sigma(1385) and \Xi(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of \Sigma(1385)^+, \Sigma(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^+, \Xi(1321)^-, and \bar{\Xi}(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into \Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})\pi were measured. The heavy hyperon to \Lambda and heavy antihyperon to \bar{\Lambda} yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. They were used to tune the parameters relevant for strange particle production of the LEPTO Monte Carlo generator.

Present status of the caloric curve of nuclei

Abstract Spectator decay was studied for the system Au + Au at an energy of 1000 A·MeV and the decay of the interaction region at energies between 50 and 200 A·MeV. In both cases temperatures were derived from several double-ratios of neighboring isotopes and from the population of excited states in 5 Li and 4 He. Agreement was found among the different isotope temperatures and also among the two excited state temperatures. Triangle Singularity as the Origin of the a1(1420)

2021

The COMPASS Collaboration experiment recently discovered a new isovector resonancelike signal with axial-vector quantum numbers, the a 1 ( 1420 ) , decaying to f 0 ( 980 ) π . With a mass too close to and a width smaller than the axial-vector ground state a 1 ( 1260 ) , it was immediately interpreted as a new light exotic meson, similar to the X , Y , Z states in the hidden-charm sector. We show that a resonancelike signal fully matching the experimental data is produced by the decay of the a 1 ( 1260 ) resonance into K * ( → K π ) K ¯ and subsequent rescattering through a triangle singularity into the coupled f 0 ( 980 ) π channel. The Deuteron Spin-dependent Structure Function g1(d) and its First Moment

We present a measurement of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g1d based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002-2004. The data provide an accurate evaluation for Gamma_1^d, the first moment of g1d(x), and for the matrix element of the singlet axial current, a0. The results of QCD fits in the next to leading order (NLO) on all g1 deep inelastic scattering data are also presented. They provide two solutions with the gluon spin distribution function Delta G positive or negative, which describe the data equally well. In both cases, at Q^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2 the first moment of Delta G is found to be of the order of 0.2 - 0.3 in absolute value.

Strange hadronic physics in electroproduction experiments at the Mainz Microtron

A new measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a transversely polarised deuteron target

2007

New high precision measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2003 and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. Both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be compatible with zero, within the present statistical errors, which are more than a factor of 2 smaller than those of the published COMPASS results from the 2002 data. The final results from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 runs are compared with naive expectations and with existing model calculations.

Recoil Polarization and Beam-Recoil Double Polarization Measurement ofηElectroproduction on the Proton in the Region of theS11(1535)Resonance

The beam-recoil double polarization P{sub x{sup '}}{sup h} and P{sub z{sup '}}{sup h} and the recoil polarization P{sub y{sup '}} were measured for the first time for the p(e-vector,e{sup '}p-vector){eta} reaction at a four-momentum transfer of Q{sup 2}=0.1 GeV{sup 2}/c{sup 2} and a center of mass production angle of {theta}=120 deg. at the Mainz Microtron MAMI-C. With a center of mass energy range of 1500 MeV<W<1550 MeV the region of the S{sub 11}(1535) and D{sub 13}(1520) resonance was covered. Observation of Coulomb-Assisted Nuclear Bound State of Ξ−–N14 System

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a Ξ^{-} absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-Λ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as Ξ^{-}+^{14}N→_{Λ}^{10}Be+_{Λ}^{5}He. For the binding energy of the Ξ^{-} hyperon in the Ξ^{-}-^{14}N system a value of 1.27±0.21  MeV was deduced. The energy level of Ξ^{-} is likely a nuclear 1p state which indicates a weak ΞN-ΛΛ coupling.

Vertical Beam Polarization at MAMI

For the first time a vertically polarized electron beam has been used for physics experiments at MAMI in the energy range between 180 and 855 MeV. The beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{n}}$, which is a direct probe of higher-order photon exchange beyond the first Born approximation, has been measured in the reaction $^{12}\mathrm C(\vec e,e')^{12}\mathrm C$. Direct measurements of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei

Abstract The lifetime of a Λ particle embedded in a nucleus (hypernucleus) decreases from that of free Λ decay mainly due to the opening of the Λ N → N N weak decay channel. However, it is generally believed that the lifetime of a hypernucleus attains a constant value (saturation) for medium to heavy hypernuclear masses, yet this hypothesis has been difficult to verify. This paper presents a direct measurement of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei that were hyper-fragments produced by fission or break-up from heavy hypernuclei initially produced with a 2.34 GeV photon-beam incident on thin Fe, Cu, Ag, and Bi target foils. Multiplicities of charged kaons from deep-inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target

Precise measurements of charged-kaon multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering were performed. The results are presented in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y, and the fraction z of the virtual-photon energy carried by the produced hadron. Collins and Sivers asymmetries in muonproduction of pions and kaons off transversely polarised protons

2015

Measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of high energy muons off transversely polarised protons are presented. The results were obtained using all the available COMPASS proton data, which were taken in the years 2007 and 2010. The Collins asymmetries exhibit in the valence region a non-zero signal for pions and there are hints of non-zero signal also for kaons. The Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive for positive pions and kaons and compatible with zero otherwise.

Measurement of azimuthal hadron asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off unpolarised nucleons

Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS muon beam at $160$ GeV/c and a $^6$LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations $\cos\phi_h$, $\cos2\phi_h$ and $\sin\phi_h$ were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables $x$, $z$ or $p_T^{\,h}$ and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the $\cos \phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons.

Electromagnetic fission of $^{238}$U at 600 and 1000 MeV per nucleon

Electromagnetic fission of238U projectiles at E/A =600 and 1000 MeV was studied with the ALADIN spectrometer at the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS. Seven different targets (Be, C, Al, Cu, In, Au and U) were used. By considering only those fission events where the two charges added up to 92, most of the nuclear interactions were excluded. The nuclear contributions to the measured fission cross sections were determined by extrapolating from beryllium to the heavier targets with the concept of factorization. The obtained cross sections for electromagnetic fission are well reproduced by extended Weizsacker-Williams calculations which include E1 and E2 excitations. The asymmetry of the fission fragme…

First Measurement of the $Q^2$ Dependence of the Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry for Elastic Scattering off Carbon

We report on the first Q^{2}-dependent measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry A_{n} in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV vertically polarized electrons off ^{12}C. We cover the Q^{2} range between 0.02 and 0.05  GeV^{2}/c^{2} and determine A_{n} at four different Q^{2} values. The experimental results are compared to a theoretical calculation that relates A_{n} to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange amplitude. The result emphasizes that the Q^{2} behavior of A_{n} given by the ratio of the Compton to charge form factors cannot be treated independently of the target nucleus.

Measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on transversely polarised protons

2010

The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range. These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation functions.

A tracking fiber detector based on silicon photomultipliers for the KAOS spectrometer

A tracking detector based on two meters long scintillating fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is being developed for the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results from a prototype setup using 2 mm square fibers and large area SiPM readout are presented. The detection efficiency of such a combination was measured to be between 83 and 100% depending on the threshold on the SiPM amplitude. A Monte Carlo simulation based on a physical model was employed in order to extract the photon detection efficiency of the SiPM devices.

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a 6 LiD target. Production of hypernuclei in multifragmentation of nuclear spectator matter

2007

In peripheral collisions of relativistic heavy ions highly excited spectators containing Lambda-hyperons can be produced. Such strange spectator matter may undergo a break-up into many fragments (multifragmentation) as it is well established for ordinary nuclear systems. We generalize the statistical multifragmentation model, previously successfully used for the description of experimental data, for the case of hypernuclear systems. We predict relative yields of hypernuclei and the main characteristics of such a break-up. We point at a connection of this phenomenon with a liquid-gas phase transition in hypermatter.

Formation of hypernuclei in heavy-ion collisions around the threshold energies

In relativistic ion collisions there are excellent opportunities to produce and investigate hyper-nuclei. We have systematically studied the formation of hypernuclear spectator residues in peripheral heavy-ion collisions with the transport DCM and UrQMD models. The hyperon capture was calculated within the potential and coalescence approaches. We demonstrate that even at the beam energies around and lower than the threshold for producing Lambda hyperons in binary nucleon-nucleon interactions a considerable amount of hypernuclei, including multi-strange ones, can be produced. Deuteron form factor measurements at low momentum transfers

A precise measurement of the elastic electron-deuteron scattering cross section at four-momentum transfers of 0.24 fm−1 ≤ Q ≤ 2.7 fm−1 has been performed at the Mainz Microtron. In this paper we describe the utilized experimental setup and the necessary analysis procedure to precisely determine the deuteron charge form factor from these data. Finally, the deuteron charge radius rd can be extracted from an extrapolation of that form factor to Q 2 = 0.

High Precision Momentum Calibration of the Magnetic Spectrometers at MAMI for Hypernuclear Binding Energy Determination

We propose a new method for absolute momentum calibration of magnetic spectrometers used in nuclear physics, using the time-of-flight (TOF), differences of pairs of particles with different masses. In cases where the flight path is not known, a calibration can be determined by using the TOF differences of two pair combinations of three particles. A Cherenkov detector, read out by a radio frequency photomultiplier tube, is considered as the high-resolution and highly stable TOF detector. Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $��^-$-$^{14}$N system

2020

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $��^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$��$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $��^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_��$Be + $^5_��$He. For the binding energy of the $��^{-}$ hyperon in the $��^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $��^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak $��N$-$����$ coupling.

First Measurement of Transverse-Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Asymmetries in the Drell-Yan Process

The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/$c$, $\pi^{-}$ beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/$c^2$ and 8.5 GeV/$c^2$. Transverse-momentum-dependent Multiplicities of Charged Hadrons in Muon-Deuteron Deep Inelastic Scattering

A semi-inclusive measurement of charged hadron multiplicities in deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target was performed using data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN. Front-End Electronics for the KAOS Spectrometer at MAMI

A new front-end electronics system has been developed for the electron arm tracking detectors in the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz microtron MAMI. The signals of multi-anode photomultipliers are collected by 96-channel front-end boards, digitized by double-threshold discriminators and the signal time is picked up by F1 TDC chips. The system was designed to process more than 4,000 channels and to cope with the high electron flux in the spectrometer and the high count rate requirement of the detectors. A subset of 288 channels was installed and successfully used in the 2008 data taking period of the Kaos spectrometer.

Beam-normal single spin asymmetry in elastic electron scattering off Si and Zr

We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry An in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized electrons off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr at Q2=0.04 GeV2/c2. The studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on $^{12}$C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry is observed in the mass regime from $^{12}$C to $^{90}$Zr.

Measurement of the Charged-Pion Polarizability

2015

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated pion Compton scattering, $\pi^-\gamma\rightarrow \pi^-\gamma$, at centre-of-mass energy below 3.5 pion masses. The process is embedded in the reaction $\pi^-\mathrm{Ni}\rightarrow\pi^-\gamma\;\mathrm{Ni}$, which is initiated by 190\,GeV pions impinging on a nickel target. The exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, $Q^2<0.0015$\,(GeV/$c$)$^2$. From a sample of 63\,000 events the pion electric polarisability is determined to be $\alpha_\pi\ =\ (\,2.0\ \pm\ 0.6_{\mbox{\scriptsize stat}}\ \pm\ 0.7_{\mbox{\scriptsize syst}}\,) \times 10^{-4}\,\mbox{fm}^3$ under the …

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system

2020

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $\Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $\Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_\Lambda$Be + $^5_\Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $\Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${\Xi}N$-$\Lambda\Lambda$ coupling.
