ID4 Is Required for Normal Ependymal Cell Development

2021

Ependymal cells are radial glia-derived multiciliated cells lining the lateral ventricles of the brain and spinal cord. Correct development and coordinated cilia beating is essential for proper cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and neurogenesis modulation. Dysfunctions of ependymal cells were associated with transcription factor deregulation. Here we provide evidence that the transcriptional regulator ID4 is involved in ependymal cell development and maturation. We observed that Id4-deficient mice display altered ventricular cell cytoarchitecture, decreased ependymal cell number and enlarged ventricles. In addition, absence of ID4 during embryonic development resulted in decreased ependymal ce…

Dividend Policy and Managerial Overconfidence: French Evidence

2021

This paper examines the impact of managerial overconfidence on dividend policy. The literature has identified two strands of reasoning. Deshmukh et al. (2013) argue that overconfident managers with relatively high investment needs perceive external funds as more costly than internal financing. This leads them to pay out lower dividends. Conversely, Wu and Liu (2011) claim that overconfident CEOs expect higher future cash flows and are prone to pay out higher dividends. We study a sample of 120 French firms for the period 2000–2015. Our results provide evidence that CEOs’ overconfidence plays a decisive role in explaining the dividend policy of French firms. Managerial overconfidence exerts a…

Joan Estelrich i el nou humanisme a l’Europa d’entreguerres

2021

Humanisme o humanitarisme? Fallida d’imponderables a l’entorn d’una discussió propedèutica entre Ramon Esquerra i Manuel Cruells

2021

Mycorrhizal symbiosis primes the accumulation of antiherbivore compounds and enhances herbivore mortality in tomato

2021

Abstract Plant association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can increase their ability to overcome multiple stresses, but their impact on plant interactions with herbivorous insects is controversial. Here we show higher mortality of the leaf-chewer Spodoptera exigua when fed on tomato plants colonized by the AMF Funneliformis mosseae, evidencing mycorrhiza-induced resistance. In search of the underlying mechanisms, an untargeted metabolomic analysis through ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was performed. The results showed that mycorrhizal symbiosis had a very limited impact on the leaf metabolome in the absence of stress, but significantly m…

Mapping the Idea of Europe : Cultural Production of Border Imaginaries through Heritage

2021

In contrast to recent reinforcements of Europe's internal and external borders due to the refugee situation on the Mediterranean and the Covid-19 outbreak, talk of European borders has in the past decades focused on the freedom of mobility guaranteed by the Schengen treaty. In many senses, free intra-European mobility has become a recited truth in the EU discourse: a phrase that hides under its repetition the gap between its implied content and empirical realities of many of those who are affected by European borders’ exclusive tendencies. Through the concept of borderscape, this article focuses on the role that cultural products – especially maps exhibited at heritage sites – have in recit…

Intensified job demands (IJDs) originate in the general accelerated pace of society and ever-changing working conditions, which subject workers to increasing workloads and deadlines, constant planning and decision-making about one’s job and career, and the continual learning of new professional knowledge and skills. This study investigated how individual characteristics, namely negative and positive affectivity related to competence demands, and multitasking preference moderate the association between IJDs and cognitive stress symptoms among media workers (n = 833; 69% female, mean age 48 years). The results show that although IJDs were associated with higher cognitive stress symptoms at wo…

Stochastic Episodes of Latent Cytomegalovirus Transcription Drive CD8 T-Cell “Memory Inflation” and Avoid Immune Evasion

2021

Acute infection with murine cytomegalovirus (mCMV) is controlled by CD8+ T cells and develops into a state of latent infection, referred to as latency, which is defined by lifelong maintenance of viral genomes but absence of infectious virus in latently infected cell types. Latency is associated with an increase in numbers of viral epitope-specific CD8+ T cells over time, a phenomenon known as “memory inflation” (MI). The “inflationary” subset of CD8+ T cells has been phenotyped as KLRG1+CD62L- effector-memory T cells (iTEM). It is agreed upon that proliferation of iTEM requires repeated episodes of antigen presentation, which implies that antigen-encoding viral genes must be transcribed du…

Are byline biases an issue of the past? The effect of author’s gender and emotion norm prescriptions on the evaluation of news articles on gender equ…

2021

When female journalists write about issues of gender equality, they often become the target of incivility and their work is devaluated. Research has investigated such devaluations based on journalists’ gender under the scope of byline biases, analysing if it matters to readers whether a news piece is authored by a male or female journalist. In this paper, we set out to study if gender byline biases occur when journalists write about gender equality. As gender attributions become particularly salient through the presentation of gendered emotion norms, we also inquire in how it matters for readers’ interest in reading such an article and the attributed credibility of the author when an artic…

Determination of isoniazid and pyridoxine in plasma sample of tuberculosis patients by micellar liquid chromatography

2021

It is no doubt Isoniazid is a powerful tuberculosis drug, but it might give rise to Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) deficiency. In this case, a usual treatment is the combined administration of Isoniazid and Pyridoxine. An easy-to-conduct procedure based on Micellar Liquid Chromatography has been developed to quantify Isoniazid and Pyridoxine in plasma from Tuberculosis patients. The sample was diluted in mobile phase, filtered and directly injected, thus avoiding extraction or purification steps. Both drugs were adequately resolved from the matrix and endogenous compounds using a mobile phase made up of 0.15 M sodium dodecyl sulfate – 8%(v/v) 1-butanol – 0.01 M phosphate buffer at pH 3, running at…

Alexithymia and Adult Attachment: Investigating the Mediating Role of Fear of Intimacy and Negative Mood Regulation Expectancies

2021

Literature suggests an association between alexithymia and insecure adult attachment, but the mediation factors involved in this relationship are under-investigated. The study was carried out to test the possible mediation roles of the fear of intimacy and negative mood regulation expectancies in explaining this relationship. A convenience sample of 258 Polish adults (mean age: 30; 45% male), completed self-reporting measures related to adult attachment (RAAS), alexithymia (TAS-20), fear of intimacy (FIS) and negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE). The results showed that alexithymia directly and indirectly predicts insecure adult attachment. Alexithymia positively predicts the fear …

Zweig i el dimoni.

A numerical approach for the modelling of forming limits in hot incremental forming of AZ31 magnesium alloy

2021

AbstractMagnesium alloys, because of their good specific material strength, can be considered attractive by different industry fields, as the aerospace and the automotive one. However, their use is limited by the poor formability at room temperature. In this research, a numerical approach is proposed in order to determine an analytical expression of material formability in hot incremental forming processes. The numerical model was developed using the commercial software ABAQUS/Explicit. The Johnson-Cook material model was used, and the model was validated through experimental measurements carried out using the ARAMIS system. Different geometries were considered with temperature varying in a…

Challenging serve myths in doubles tennis

2021

Doubles tennis has received little interest from quantitative research to date. Coach-led anecdotes therefore abound. The aims of this study were therefore to evaluate the veracity of the following common anecdotes: (a) serving teams have an advantage regardless of the length of the point; (b) serving teams have a greater advantage with new balls; (c) regular teams perform better when serving than new teams and (d) serving teams decrease their performance during break points. Data from doubles hard-court and clay-court tennis were collated for 52 doubles teams during 2018 ATP tournaments. Results revealed that the advantage of serving teams was evident on the points lasting up to 4 shots. …

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis : Lessons from a randomized controlled trial in children

2021

Introduction Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in children is a severe interstitial lung disease and potentially, a chronic condition, if not treated appropriately. No evidence-based guidelines are available; in particular, the role of systemic glucocorticoid therapy is unclear. Methods The aim of this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multi-center, phase II trial in pediatric HP was to assess the outcome of HP in children after 6 months of treatment and to compare 3 months of treatment with oral prednisolone or placebo. Results After 1.5 years and the inclusion of only four children, we terminated the study prematurely. Two of the children randomized to predniso…

Dynamic clock generator and memory mass device using a quantum ring driven by three-color laser fields

2021

We study the behaviour and applications of a quantum ring (QR) under a three-color laser field. In particular we study the emission of harmonics and their temporal evolution through wavelets. These results suggest the use of QR for three important applications: (1) generation of single short pulses, (2) creation of a variable clock generator, (3) a memory mass device through the angular momentum acquired by the electron.

Elites and Culture: Social Profiles in the Cultivated Population

2021

Since the 1990s, the central references of the sociology of cultural practices have been the theoretical frameworks developed by Pierre Bourdieu and Richard A. Peterson around the concepts of distinction and omnivorousness. This article is based on these frameworks; it revises them together with those of Donnat and Lahire and postulates that the terms of cultural classification and especially those of the upper classes (distinguished and omnivorous) require revision. The article also claims that there are diverse socio-cultural profiles due to the fact that there is never a single logic of differentiation of tastes, and that the results of the present research demand a new conceptual frame…

RESCUE OF LRBA GENE EXPRESSION IN PRIMARY HUMAN FIBROBLASTS CHARACTERISED BY NONSENSE MUTATION c. 5047 (C>T).

2021

Primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are rare genetic diseases characterized by susceptibility to infections, increased risk of autoimmunity, hypogammaglobulinemia, and lymphoproliferative syndromes. PIDs are associated to genetic alterations in about 400 known genes, among which, mutations of the LRBA gene. LRBA gene encodes a widely expressed multi-domain protein with highly conserved BEACH domain, involved in regulation of endosomal trafficking, particularly endocytosis of ligand-activated receptors. It was reported that stop mutations affect this gene leading to the loss of the protein expression. Recently, we identified three Translational Readthrough Inducing Drug (TRID), that showed hig…

Ageing via sexual perception is a by-product of male adaptive plasticity inDrosophila melanogaster

2021

ABSTRACTSensory perception of environmental cues can dramatically modulate ageing across distant taxa. For example, maleDrosophila melanogasterage faster if they perceive female cues but fail to mate (ageing via sexual perception). This finding has been a breakthrough for our understanding of the mechanisms of ageing, yet we ignore how and why such responses have evolved. Here, we usedD. melanogasterto ask whether ageing via sexual perception may be a by-product of plastic adaptive responses to female cues, and found that while long-term sexual perception leads to reproductive costs, short-term perception increases male lifetime reproductive success in a competitive environment. Background and Purpose: Because of the aging population, an increase in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently observed, thus leading to a rise in AF-related ischemic stroke (IS). We analyzed the current prevalence of AF among patients with IS, their characteristics, and temporal trends from 2006 to 2017 in the population-based Dijon Stroke Registry. Methods: We used data from the Dijon Stroke Registry, an ongoing population-based study that records all cases of acute stroke among residents of the city of Dijon. All patients with IS between 2006 and 2017 were included. Previous AF was defined if it was mentioned in the medical file before stroke and newly diagnosed AF if i…

The Exclusion of Women from Inheritance Rights: An Unresolved Issue?

2021

In Italy, the women's exclusion from the inheritance is the principle that structures the property system of the families in medieval and early modern age and the social and juridical organization of these centuries, until the XIX century. Despite its importance, the exclusion of the women has never been an autonomous historiographical issue, but it has been ignored to advantage of analysis centered on the dowry system: emphasis has been placed mainly on the property rights of the women instead of observing the marginalization of the female part of lineages respect to the family wealths. The essay addresses two issues: the way in which statutory and state laws rule women’s exclusion from in…

Spin-Wave Driven Bidirectional Domain Wall Motion in Kagome Antiferromagnets

2021

We predict a mechanism to controllably manipulate domain walls in kagome antiferromagnets via a single linearly polarized spin-wave source. We show by means of atomistic spin dynamics simulations of antiferromagnets with kagome structure that the speed and direction of the domain wall motion can be regulated by only tuning the frequency of the applied spin-wave. Starting from microscopics, we establish an effective action and derive the corresponding equations of motion for the spin-wave-driven domain wall. Our analytical calculations reveal that the coupling of two spin-wave modes inside the domain wall explains the frequency-dependent velocity of the spin texture. Such a highly tunable sp…
