Measurement of the H2(p,γ)He3 S factor at 265–1094 keV

2021

Recent astronomical data have provided the primordial deuterium abundance with percent precision. As a result, big bang nucleosynthesis may provide a constraint on the universal baryon to photon ratio that is as precise as, but independent from, analyses of the cosmic microwave background. However, such a constraint requires that the nuclear reaction rates governing the production and destruction of primordial deuterium are sufficiently well known. Here, a new measurement of the $^{2}\mathrm{H}{(p,\ensuremath{\gamma})}^{3}\mathrm{He}$ cross-section is reported. This nuclear reaction dominates the error on the predicted big bang deuterium abundance. A proton beam of 400--1650 keV beam energy…

Fatness and Consequences of Neoliberalism

2021

My aim in this chapter is to inspect how neoliberal economic policy and rationale are enmeshed with conceptions of body, gender and health in the contemporary (primarily Western) cultural sphere and how they have been addressed in research literature, particularly concerning fatness and the fat body. In recent years, the fat body has been and is a target of intensifying biopolitical control. My point of departure is that different elements of neoliberal culture have found something to latch onto and exploit in the concept of the fat body. Social institutions such as health care policies; or structures, such as health care systems; not to mention social, moral, and political orders of the da…

Two light sensors decode moonlight versus sunlight to adjust a plastic circadian/circalunidian clock to moon phase

2021

AbstractMany species synchronize their physiology and behavior to specific hours. It is commonly assumed that sunlight acts as the main entrainment signal for ~24h clocks. However, the moon provides similarly regular time information, and increasingly studies report correlations between diel behavior and lunidian cycles. Yet, mechanistic insight into the possible influences of the moon on ~24hr timers is scarce. We studiedPlatynereis dumeriliiand uncover that the moon, besides its role in monthly timing, also schedules the exact hour of nocturnal swarming onset to the nights’ darkest times. Moonlight adjusts a plastic clock, exhibiting <24h (moonlit) or >24h (no moon) periodicity. Abun…

Interferometric Z-scan method for thermo-optical effect studies

2021

We demonstrated a new approach to measuring third-order nonlinear optical effects using an experimental setup incorporating both Z-scan and Mach-Zehnder interferometer methods. This method could be especially purposive for thermo-optical effect studies as it can simultaneously probe thermal gradient profile as well as absolute temperature changes induced by an optical beam. The experimental setup was tested using chloroform. Experimental measurements were carried out using 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser with 8 ns pulse width and 40 kHz pulse repetition rate. The measured nonlinear refractive index of chloroform was mainly induced by the thermo-optical effect. As thermo-optical response depends on bea…

European comission's identity during brexit : a communication strategy change on twitter

2021

The European Union (EU) was founded to promote peace, prosperity and other values between an increasing number of member states (European Commission, 2001). However, Brexit has activated a reputation crisis that reinforces Euroscepticism (Borzel; Risse, 2018). The objective of the study is to identify the differences in the semantic construction and thematic framing of the European Commission during a two-year period, previous to Brexit and after Brexit, on a sample of 4827 tweets posted by the European Commission. Findings show that in the period before Brexit, the EU is presented as an abstract political body, highly informative on major crisis, and reactively framing messages with values…

Europium(III), Terbium(III), and Gadolinium(III) Oxamato-Based Coordination Polymers: Visible Luminescence and Slow Magnetic Relaxation

2021

The reaction of aqueous solutions of EuIII, TbIII, and GdIII ions with Na2Hpcpa [H3pcpa = N-(4-carboxyphenyl)oxamic acid] afforded three new isostructural oxamate-containing lanthanide(III) coordination polymers of general formula {LnIII2(Hpcpa)3(H2O)5·H2O}n [Ln = Eu (1),Tb (2), and Gd(3)]. Their structure is made up of neutral zigzag chains running parallel to the [101] direction where double syn-syn carboxylate(oxamate)-bridged dilanthanide(III) pairs (Ln1 and Ln2) are linked by three Hpcpa2- ligands, one of them with the μ-κ2O,O':κO″ coordination mode and the other two with the μ3-κ2O,O':κO″:κO'''. Additionally, two of those chains are interlinked through hydrogen bonding and π-π type in…

The Oppel-Kundt Illusion and Its Relation to Horizontal-Vertical and Oblique Effects.

2021

The Oppel–Kundt illusion consists in the overestimation of the length of filled versus empty extents. Two experiments explored its relation to the horizontal-vertical illusion, which consists in the overestimation of the length of vertical versus horizontal extents, and to the oblique effect, which consists in poorer discriminative sensitivity for obliquely as opposed to horizontally or vertically oriented stimuli. For Experiment 1, Kundt’s (1863) original stimulus was rotated in steps of 45° full circle around 360°. For Experiment 2, one part of the stimulus remained at a horizontal or vertical orientation, whereas the other part was tilted 45° or 90°. The Oppel–Kundt illusion was at its …

Hydrothermal ageing of fibre metal laminates made of flax fibres

2021

International audience; In the past two decades, fibre metal laminates (FMLs) have been widely used to manufacture aircraft and aerospace components. FMLs are hybrid composite structures based on thin sheets of metal alloys reinforced by organic matrix composites (Sinmazçelik et al., 2011). When compared to mono-material solutions, FMLs provide added functionalities such as high specific bending strength, fatigue resistance, acoustical absorption, vibration transmissibility and damping characteristics. They overcome most of the limitations of metal and polymeric reinforced composites. The first generation of FMLs was based on thermoset resins. To shorten the process cycle times, lower the p…

LGB´s Arts Affinity: An Empirical Study of Theater Audiences Based on Motivations

2021

The extended belief of gay people being more creative and showing higher interest toward arts lacks robust empirical support. The pioneer study on this issue highlighted that LGB´s arts participation was mostly explained by demographic factors such as level of studies, residence and family situation, which suggests that differences due to sexual orientation tend to fade. In this paper, we put forward the hypothesis that sexual orientation influences motivations to participate, which emphasizes their role and heterogeneity. To do so, we conducted a survey on participants at an alternative performing arts festival collecting information on socio-demographics, including sexual orientation, mot…

Single intracerebroventricular progranulin injection adversely affects the blood–brain barrier in experimental traumatic brain injury

2021

Progranulin (PGRN) is a neurotrophic and anti-inflammatory factor with protective effects in animal models of ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Administration of recombinant (r) PGRN prevents exaggerated brain pathology after TBI in Grn-deficient mice, suggesting that local injection of recombinant progranulin (rPGRN) provides therapeutic benefit in the acute phase of TBI. To test this hypothesis, we subjected adult male C57Bl/6N mice to the controlled cortical impact model of TBI, administered a single dose of rPGRN intracerebroventricularly (ICV) shortly before the injury, and examined behavioral and biological effects up to 5 days post injury (dp…

Phytochemical inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome for the treatment of inflammatory diseases

2021

The NLRP3 inflammasome holds a crucial role in innate immune responses. Pathogen- and danger-associated molecular patterns may initiate inflammasome activation and following inflammatory cytokine release. The inflammasome formation and its-associated activity are involved in various pathological conditions such as cardiovascular, central nervous system, metabolic, renal, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Although the mechanism behind NLRP3-mediated disorders have not been entirely illuminated, many phytochemicals and medicinal plants have been described to prevent inflammatory disorders. In the present review, we mainly introduced phytochemicals inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome in addition…

Protein content and lipid profiling of isolated native autophagosomes

2021

AbstractAutophagy is a central eukaryotic catabolic pathway responsible for clearance and recycling of an extensive portfolio of cargoes, which are packed in vesicles, called autophagosomes, and are delivered to lysosomes for degradation. Besides basal autophagy, which constantly degrades cellular material, the pathway is highly responsive to several stress conditions. However, the exact protein content and phospholipid composition of autophagosomes under changing autophagy conditions remain elusive so far. Here, we introduce a FACS-based approach for isolation of native unmanipulated autophagosomes and ensure the quality of the preparations. Employing quantitative proteomics and phospholip…

Histone acetylation regulates the expression of genes involved in worker reproduction and lifespan in the ant Temnothorax rugatulus

2021

In insect societies, the queen monopolizes reproduction while workers perform tasks such as brood care or foraging. Queen loss leads to ovary development and lifespan extension in workers from many ants. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of this phenotypic plasticity remain unclear. Recent studies highlight the importance of epigenetics in regulating plastic traits in social insects. We investigated the role of histone acetylation in the regulation of worker reproduction in the ant Temnothorax rugatulus. We removed queens from their colonies to induce worker fecundity, and either fed workers with chemical inhibitors of histone acetylation (C646), deacetylation (Trichostatin A), o…

Catalan words avoiding pairs of length three patterns

2021

Catalan words are particular growth-restricted words counted by the eponymous integer sequence. In this article we consider Catalan words avoiding a pair of patterns of length 3, pursuing the recent initiating work of the first and last authors and of S. Kirgizov where (among other things) the enumeration of Catalan words avoiding a patterns of length 3 is completed. More precisely, we explore systematically the structural properties of the sets of words under consideration and give enumerating results by means of recursive decomposition, constructive bijections or bivariate generating functions with respect to the length and descent number. Some of the obtained enumerating sequences are kn…

Analysis of synthetic cannabinoids still poses a challenge for many institutions due to the number of available substances and the constantly changing drug market. Both new and well-known substances keep appearing and disappearing on the market, making it hard to adapt analytical methods in a timely manner. In this study, we developed a qualitative screening approach for synthetic cannabinoids and their metabolites by means of liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-QTOF-MS). Samples were measured in data-dependent auto-MS/MS mode and identified by fragment spectra, retention time and accurate mass. Two established solid phase extractions were compared using fo…

Microtomographic reconstruction of mandibular defects treated with xenografts and collagen-based membranes:a pre-clinical minipig model

2021

Background The goal of this study was to evaluate hard tissue response following guided bone regeneration using commercially available bovine bone grafts and collagen membranes; bilayer collagen membrane and porcine pericardium-based membrane, by means of a non-destructive three-dimensional (3D) computerized volumetric analysis following microtomography reconstruction. Material and Methods Bone regenerative properties of various bovine bone graft materials were evaluated in the Göttingen minipig model. Two standardized intraosseous defects (15mm x 8mm x 8mm) were created bilaterally of the mandible of eighteen animals (n=72 defects). Groups were nested within the same subject and randomly d…
