Ischemic Stroke With Atrial Fibrillation: Characteristics and Time Trends 2006 to 2017 in the Dijon Stroke Registry.

2021

Background and Purpose: Because of the aging population, an increase in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is currently observed, thus leading to a rise in AF-related ischemic stroke (IS). We analyzed the current prevalence of AF among patients with IS, their characteristics, and temporal trends from 2006 to 2017 in the population-based Dijon Stroke Registry. Methods: We used data from the Dijon Stroke Registry, an ongoing population-based study that records all cases of acute stroke among residents of the city of Dijon. All patients with IS between 2006 and 2017 were included. Previous AF was defined if it was mentioned in the medical file before stroke and newly diagnosed AF if i…

Role of Haptoglobin as a Marker of Muscular Improvement in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis after Administration of Epigallocatechin Gallate and Incr…

2021

Here, we report on the role of haptoglobin (Hp), whose expression depends on the synthesis of interleukin 6 (IL-6), related to the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS), as a possible marker of muscle improvement achieved after treatment with the polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and an increase in the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in the blood. After 4 months of intervention with 27 MS patients, we observed that Hp does not significantly increase, alongside a significant decrease in IL-6 and a significant increase in muscle percentage. At the same time, Hp synthesis is considerably and positively correlated with IL-6 both before and after treatment

Association of Vitamin K and Non-Vitamin K Oral Anticoagulant Use and Cancer Incidence in Atrial Fibrillation Patients

2021

The association between the use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and cancer risk reduction remains unclear. We aimed to assess the association between the use of VKAs or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) and the incidence of cancer in a large cohort of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) by means of a population-based, propensity-weighted cohort study using population-wide databases including patients diagnosed with nonvalvular AF (NVAF) followed for up of 5 years (median 2.94 years). We created two cohorts based on the initiation therapy (VKA or DOAC). Initiation with VKA or DOAC was defined as filling a prescription with no previous exposure in the preceding 12 months. Cancer diagnoses…

A VR-Enhanced Rollover Car Simulator and Edutainment Application for Increasing Seat Belt Use Awareness

2021

Most countries have active road safety policies that seek the objective of reducing deaths in traffic accidents. One of the main factors in this regard is the awareness of the safety measures, one of the most important being the correct usage of the seat belt, a device that is known to save thousands of lives every year. The presented work shows a VR-enhanced edutainment application designed to increase awareness on the use of seat belts. For this goal, a motorized rollover system was developed that, synchronized with a VR application (shown in a head-mounted display for each user inside a real car), rolls over this car with up to four passengers inside. This way, users feel the sensations …

Wireless versus Wired Network-on-Chip to Enable the Multi- Tenant Multi-FPGAs in Cloud

2021

The new era of computing is not CPU-centric but enriched with all the heterogeneous computing resources including the reconfigurable fabric. In multi-FPGA architecture, either deployed within a data center or as a standalone model, inter-FPGA communication is crucial. Network-on-chip exhibits a promising performance for the integration of one FPGA. A sustainable communication architecture requires stable performance as the number of applications or users grows. Wireless network-on-chip has the potential to be that communication architecture, as it boasts the same performance capability as wired solutions in addition to its multicast capacities. We conducted an exploratory study to investiga…

Green Composites Based on PLA and Agricultural or Marine Waste Prepared by FDM

2021

Three dimensional-printability of green composites is recently growing in importance and interest, especially in the view of feasibility to valorize agricultural and marine waste to attain green fillers capable of reducing bioplastic costs, without compromising their processability and performance from an environmental and mechanical standpoint. In this work, two lignocellulosic fillers, obtained from Opuntia ficus indica and Posidonia oceanica, were added to PLA and processed by FDM. Among the 3D printed biocomposites investigated, slight differences could be found in terms of PLA molecular weight and filler aspect ratio. It was shown that it is possible to replace up to 20% of bioplastic …

Increased stability of the TM helix oligomer abrogates the apoptotic activity of the human Fas receptor

2021

Human death receptors control apoptotic events during cell differentiation, cell homeostasis and the elimination of damaged or infected cells. Receptor activation involves ligand-induced structural reorganizations of preformed receptor trimers. Here we show that the death receptor transmembrane domains only have a weak intrinsic tendency to homo-oligomerize within a membrane, and thus these domains potentially do not significantly contribute to receptor trimerization. However, mutation of Pro183 in the human CD95/Fas receptor transmembrane helix results in a dramatically increased interaction propensity, as shown by genetic assays. The increased interaction of the transmembrane domain is co…

Tip-induced mobilization upon cooling of Ni monolayers on Re(0001)

2021

Usually, cooling a metal sample down to cryogenic temperatures leads to immobilization of the surface atoms. In this study, we demonstrate a movement of Ni adatoms at $4.6\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ on Ni films grown on a Re(0001) single crystal, while the surface is rigid at room temperature. The mobility is observed from 2 to 20 atomic-layer-thick films. Measurements at intermediate temperatures reveal an increasing mobility with decreasing temperature. The observed velocity of advancing steps is consistent with a model considering a sudden release of material, eventually triggered by the tip, followed by free diffusion. According to the model, an increasing length scale for t…

(F, G) -summed form of the QED effective action

2021

We conjecture that the proper-time series expansion of the one-loop effective Lagrangian of quantum electrodynamics can be summed in all terms containing the field-strength invariants $\mathcal{F}=\frac{1}{4}{F}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}{F}^{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}(x)$, $\mathcal{G}=\frac{1}{4}{\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{F}}_{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}{F}^{\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu}}(x)$, including those also possessing derivatives of the electromagnetic field strength. This partial resummation is exactly encapsulated in a factor with the same form as the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density, except that now the electric and magnetic fields can depend arbitrar…

Sensitivity to New Physics of Isotope Shift Studies using the Coronal Lines of Highly Charged Calcium Ions

2021

Promising searches for new physics beyond the current Standard Model (SM) of particle physics are feasible through isotope-shift spectroscopy, which is sensitive to a hypothetical fifth force between the neutrons of the nucleus and the electrons of the shell. Such an interaction would be mediated by a new particle which could in principle be associated with dark matter. In so-called King plots, the mass-scaled frequency shifts of two optical transitions are plotted against each other for a series of isotopes. Subtle deviations from the expected linearity could reveal such a fifth force. Here, we study experimentally and theoretically six transitions in highly charged ions of Ca, an element …

2021

Prediction and adjustment of point defect (vacancies and self-interstitials) distribution in silicon crystals is of utmost importance for microelectronic applications. The simulation of growth processes is widely applied for process development and quite a few different sets of point defect parameters have been proposed. In this paper the transient temperature, thermal stress and point defect distributions are simulated for 300 mm Czochralski growth of the whole crystal including cone and cylindrical growth phases. Simulations with 12 different published point defect parameter sets are compared to the experimentally measured interstitial–vacancy boundary. The results are evaluated for stand…

Hybrid Energy Storage for Underground Mining EV

2021

One of the main concerns when it comes to contributions to the carbon footprint is the consumption of fuel by vehicles, more specifically that of mining vehicles. One solution to this problem is replacing the combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles. This also poses the problem of low power density. This paper proposes a solution of using supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors with the aim of investigating how they can affect the performance of electric vehicles. For this purpose, a background of fuel consumption and alternative solutions to the problem are discussed, a prototype was designed and built. It was found that when supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors were used in combin…

Ageing via sexual perception is a by-product of male adaptive plasticity inDrosophila melanogaster

2021

ABSTRACTSensory perception of environmental cues can dramatically modulate ageing across distant taxa. For example, maleDrosophila melanogasterage faster if they perceive female cues but fail to mate (ageing via sexual perception). This finding has been a breakthrough for our understanding of the mechanisms of ageing, yet we ignore how and why such responses have evolved. Here, we usedD. melanogasterto ask whether ageing via sexual perception may be a by-product of plastic adaptive responses to female cues, and found that while long-term sexual perception leads to reproductive costs, short-term perception increases male lifetime reproductive success in a competitive environment. Genome-Wide Analysis Reveals Selection Signatures Involved in Meat Traits and Local Adaptation in Semi-Feral Maremmana Cattle

2021

The Maremmana cattle is an ancient Podolian-derived Italian breed raised in semi-wild conditions with distinctive morphological and adaptive traits. The aim of this study was to detect potential selection signatures in Maremmana using medium-density single nucleotide polymorphism array. Putative selection signatures were investigated combining three statistical approaches designed to quantify the excess of haplotype homozygosity either within (integrated haplotype score, iHS) or among pairs of populations (Rsb and XP-EHH), and contrasting the Maremmana with a single reference population composed of a pool of seven Podolian-derived Italian breeds. Overall, the three haplotype-based analyses …

Town population size and structuring into villages and households drive infectious disease risks in pre-healthcare Finland

2021

Social life is often considered to cost in terms of increased parasite or pathogen risk. However, evidence for this in the wild remains equivocal, possibly because populations and social groups are often structured, which affects the local transmission and extinction of diseases. We test how the structuring of towns into villages and households influenced the risk of dying from three easily diagnosable infectious diseases—smallpox, pertussis and measles—using a novel dataset covering almost all of Finland in the pre-healthcare era (1800–1850). Consistent with previous results, the risk of dying from all three diseases increased with the local population size. However, the division of towns …

The Exclusion of Women from Inheritance Rights: An Unresolved Issue?

2021

In Italy, the women's exclusion from the inheritance is the principle that structures the property system of the families in medieval and early modern age and the social and juridical organization of these centuries, until the XIX century. Despite its importance, the exclusion of the women has never been an autonomous historiographical issue, but it has been ignored to advantage of analysis centered on the dowry system: emphasis has been placed mainly on the property rights of the women instead of observing the marginalization of the female part of lineages respect to the family wealths. The essay addresses two issues: the way in which statutory and state laws rule women’s exclusion from in…

On new means with interesting practical applications: Generalized power means

2021

Means of positive numbers appear in many applications and have been a traditional matter of study. In this work, we focus on defining a new mean of two positive values with some properties which are essential in applications, ranging from subdivision and multiresolution schemes to the numerical solution of conservation laws. In particular, three main properties are crucial—in essence, the ideas of these properties are roughly the following: to stay close to the minimum of the two values when the two arguments are far away from each other, to be quite similar to the arithmetic mean of the two values when they are similar and to satisfy a Lipchitz condition. We present new means with these pr…

Teachers’ Readiness for Remote Teaching During COVID-19 Pandemic: The Case of Latvia

2021

The state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced educational processes in schools all over the world. Teachers had a very short time to reform all their work and started to use new technologies, which increased their workload and level of stress. Information on factors affecting teachers’ readiness for remote teaching is insufficient, and we aimed to investigate it in this study. We performed a population-based cross-sectional study after the first experience of teachers working remotely during the Spring 2020 state of emergency in Latvia. We assessed the self-reported “overall readiness for remote teaching” using five sub-domains of a specific survey. We observed a reversed a…

Latvian Grammar

2021

“Latvian Grammar” was written to make information about the Latvian language and its grammatical system more easily available not only within Latvia, but also beyond its borders. A modern grammar of Latvian written in English is as important for native speakers of Latvian as for those who have learned Latvian as a second language and also is of great value for anyone interested in the culture and history of Latvia or the Latvian language itself. The need for a reference grammar of Latvian written in English is especially important right now due to the existence of a large Latvian diaspora community abroad, particularly in English-speaking countries where children and young people are educat…

The Nutri-Score front-of-pack nutritional labelling system uses a code of letters and colours to inform consumers about the nutritional quality of foods and drinks. However, currently this system does not cover all the positive aspects of foods that possess a specific nutritional quality within the Mediterranean diet, as in the case of olive oil and extra-virgin olive oil. The AESAN Scientific Committee has suggested different possibilities for a more accurate assessment of olive oil and especially virgin olive oil, in the Nutri-Score front-of-pack labelling system, taking into consideration those compounds that are beneficial to the consu…

2021

Abstract Artemisinins, a group of plant-derived sesquiterpene lactones, are efficient antimalarial agents. They also share anti-inflammatory and anti-viral activities and were considered for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Additionally, artemisinins bind to gephyrin, the multifunctional scaffold of GABAergic synapses, and modulate inhibitory neurotransmission in vitro. We previously reported an increased expression of gephyrin and GABAA receptors in early pre-symptomatic stages of an AD mouse model (APP-PS1) and in parallel enhanced CDK5-dependent phosphorylation of gephyrin at S270. Here, we studied the effects of artemisinin on gephyrin in the brain…

Multiple sclerosis: prevalence of the ‘central vein’ sign in white matter lesions on gadolinium-enhanced susceptibility-weighted images

2021

Aims To evaluate prospectively whether an intravenous gadolinium injection could improve the detection of the central vein sign on susceptibility-weighted imaging sequences obtained with a 1.5 T magnetic resonance scanner in patients with multiple sclerosis compared to unenhanced susceptibility-weighted images. Materials and methods This prospective, institution review board-approved study included 19 patients affected by multiple sclerosis (six men; 13 women; mean age 40.8 years, range 20–74 years). Patients had the relapsing–remitting clinical subtype in 95% of cases, and only one (5%) patient had the primary progressive clinical subtype of multiple sclerosis. T2-weighted images, fluid-at…

Effect of Physiotherapy Treatment in the Autonomic Activation and Pain Perception in Male Patients with Non-Specific Subacute Low Back Pain

2021

Introduction: Physiotherapy treatment is a common intervention for low back pain (LBP) patients. These interventions have been related to physiological effects in the central nervous system. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the effect of physiotherapy treatment in patients with LBP in the autonomic nervous system activation and subjective pain perception of patients. Methods: A total of 30 male subjects diagnosed with non-specific subacute LBP received a 50 min session consisting of (a) a manual therapy based on joint mobilization and soft tissues techniques in the lumbo-pelvic area, (b) a stretching program, and (c) motor control exercises of the core muscles. The autonomic modif…
