Phylogenetic Distribution of Polysaccharide-Degrading Enzymes in Marine Bacteria

2021

Deconstruction is an essential step of conversion of polysaccharides, and polysaccharide-degrading enzymes play a key role in this process. Although there is recent progress in the identification of these enzymes, the diversity and phylogenetic distribution of these enzymes in marine microorganisms remain largely unknown, hindering our understanding of the ecological roles of marine microorganisms in the ocean carbon cycle. Here, we studied the phylogenetic distribution of nine types of polysaccharide-degrading enzymes in marine bacterial genomes. First, we manually compiled a reference sequence database containing 961 experimentally verified enzymes. With this reference database, we annota…

Head–Neck Cancer Delineation

2021

Head–Neck Cancer (HNC) has a relevant impact on the oncology patient population and for this reason, the present review is dedicated to this type of neoplastic disease. In particular, a collection of methods aimed at tumor delineation is presented, because this is a fundamental task to perform efficient radiotherapy. Such a segmentation task is often performed on uni-modal data (usually Positron Emission Tomography (PET)) even though multi-modal images are preferred (PET-Computerized Tomography (CT)/PET-Magnetic Resonance (MR)). Datasets can be private or freely provided by online repositories on the web. The adopted techniques can belong to the well-known image processing/computer-vision a…

Managing adult patients with infectious diseases in emergency departments: international ID-IRI study.

2021

We aimed to explore factors for optimizing antimicrobial treatment in emergency departments. A single-day point prevalence survey was conducted on January 18, 2020, in 53 referral/tertiary hospitals in 22 countries. 1957 (17%) of 11557 patients presenting to EDs had infections. The mean qSOFA score was 0.37 +/- 0.74. Sepsis (qSOFA >= 2) was recorded in 218 (11.1%) patients. The mean qSOFA score was significantly higher in low-middle (1.48 +/- 0.963) compared to upper-middle (0.17 +/- 0.482) and high-income (0.36 +/- 0.714) countries ( P < 0.001). Eight (3.7%) patients with sepsis were treated as outpatients. The most common diagnoses were upper-respiratory (n = 877, 43.3%), lower-respirator…

EFFICIENT AND SECURE ALGORITHMS FOR MOBILE CROWDSENSING THROUGH PERSONAL SMART DEVICES.

2021

The success of the modern pervasive sensing strategies, such as the Social Sensing, strongly depends on the diffusion of smart mobile devices. Smartwatches, smart- phones, and tablets are devices capable of capturing and analyzing data about the user’s context, and can be exploited to infer high-level knowledge about the user himself, and/or the surrounding environment. In this sense, one of the most relevant applications of the Social Sensing paradigm concerns distributed Human Activity Recognition (HAR) in scenarios ranging from health care to urban mobility management, ambient intelligence, and assisted living. Even though some simple HAR techniques can be directly implemented on mo- bil…

Iron Status of Vegans, Vegetarians and Pescatarians in Norway

2021

Although plant-based diets provide well-established physical and environmental health benefits, omitting meat or meat products has also been associated with a risk of being deficient in specific nutrients, such as iron. As data on the iron status among Norwegian vegans, vegetarians and pescatarians are lacking, the present study aimed to assess iron status in these groups of healthy adults. Blood markers for iron status were measured in 191 participants (18–60 years old) comprising 106 vegans, 54 vegetarians and 31 pescatarians: serum-ferritin (S-Fe), serum-iron (S-Iron) and serum-total iron binding capacity (S-TIBC). Serum-transferrin-saturation (S-TSAT) was estimated (S-Iron/S-TIBC × 100)…

Is there an infant mortality in bacteria?

2021

This manuscript proposes a significant step in our long-run investigation of infant mortality across species. Since 2016 (Berrut et al. 2016) a succession of studies (Bois et al. 2019) have traced infant mortality from organisms of high complexity (e.g. mammals) down to unicellular organisms. Infant mortality may be considered as a filtering process through which organisms with potentially lethal congenital defects are eliminated. Such defects may have many causes but here we focus particularly on mishaps resulting from non-optimal conditions in the production of proteins, enzymes and other crucial macromolecules. The statistical signature of infant mortality consists in a falling age-speci…

Continuous frames for unbounded operators

2021

Few years ago G\u{a}vru\c{t}a gave the notions of $K$-frame and atomic system for a linear bounded operator $K$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ in order to decompose $\mathcal{R}(K)$, the range of $K$, with a frame-like expansion. These notions are here generalized to the case of a densely defined and possibly unbounded operator on a Hilbert space $A$ in a continuous setting, thus extending what have been done in a previous paper in a discrete framework.

First hitting time for a diffusion

2021

In this thesis, we focus our attention on the generation of the first exit time or the first passage time for diffusions in a one-dimensional context. In the first chapter, we present already well-known methods in order to generate such random variables. We particularly introduce the WOMS algorithm. This algorithm permits the generation of an approximation of the time needed by the Brownian motion in order to exit from a given interval. In the second and third chapters, we explain how to extend the previous algorithm in order to deal with diffusions strongly linked to the one-dimensional Brownian motion. We first consider the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and then we consider a wide class of di…

Macrolides May Prevent Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Entry into Cells: A Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship Study and Exp…

2021

The global pandemic caused by the emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is threatening the health and economic systems worldwide. Despite the enormous efforts of scientists and clinicians around the world, there is still no drug or vaccine available worldwide for the treatment and prevention of the infection. A rapid strategy for the identification of new treatments is based on repurposing existing clinically approved drugs that show antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, after developing a quantitative structure activity relationship analysis based on molecular topology, several macrolide antibiotics are identified as promising SARS-…

A multi-scale method for complex flows of non-Newtonian fluids

2021

We introduce a new heterogeneous multi-scale method for the simulation of flows of non-Newtonian fluids in general geometries and present its application to paradigmatic two-dimensional flows of polymeric fluids. Our method combines micro-scale data from non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) with macro-scale continuum equations to achieve a data-driven prediction of complex flows. At the continuum level, the method is model-free, since the Cauchy stress tensor is determined locally in space and time from NEMD data. The modelling effort is thus limited to the identification of suitable interaction potentials at the micro-scale. Compared to previous proposals, our approach takes into acco…

π-Interpenetrated 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks from Distorted Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons.

2021

Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) with a pcu topology have been obtained from distorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons acting as triangular antiprismatic (D3d ) nodes. Such 3D COFs are six-fold interpenetrated as the result of interframework π-stacking, which enable charge transport properties that are not expected for 3D COFs.

Robust hybridization gap in the Kondo insulator YbB12 probed by femtosecond optical spectroscopy

2021

In heavy fermions the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited carriers has been found to be governed by the low energy indirect gap ${\mathrm{E}}_{g}$ resulting from hybridization between localized moments and conduction band electrons. Here, carrier relaxation dynamics in a prototype Kondo insulator $\mathrm{Yb}{\mathrm{B}}_{12}$ is studied over a large range of temperatures and over three orders of magnitude. We utilize the intrinsic nonlinearity of dynamics to quantitatively determine microscopic parameters, such as electron-hole recombination rate. The extracted value reveals that hybridization is accompanied by a strong charge transfer from localized $4f$ levels. The results imply the pres…

Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports

2021

AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…

Rheological properties of thermal gels of pea and egg white protein mixtures

2021

International audience; Partial substitution of animal protein by plant protein is a new opportunity to produce sustainable food for human beings. However, separated studies of plant protein and egg white cannot help to have a direct understanding of the complex structure in a mixed food product. In this work, we used low-denatured pea globulins (PG) in admixture with raw egg white (EW) to study the thermal and rheological behavior of the mixed systems submitted to heat treatment (>G’’) for all the protein samples whatever the pH. Higher storage modulus (G’) values for egg white indicated stronger elastic behavior as for the mixtures. From strain sweep experiments, the addition of PG in the…

The quality of wheat bread with ultrasonicated and fermented by-products from plant drinks production

2021

During plant-based drinks production a significant amount of valuable by-products (BPs) is obtained. The valorization of BPs is beneficial for both the environment and the food industry. The direct incorporation of the fermented and/or ultrasonicated almond, coconut, and oat drinks production BPs in other food products, such as wheat bread (WB) could lead to the better nutritional value as well as quality of WB. Therefore, in this study, various quantities (5, 10, 15, and 20%) of differently treated [ultrasonicated (37 kHz) or fermented with Lacticaseibacillus casei LUHS210] almond, coconut, and oat drinks preparation BPs were used in wheat bread (WB) formulations. Abstract Insect cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are highly diverse and have multiple functions, including communication and waterproofing. CHC profiles form species-specific, complex blends of up to 150 compounds. Especially in ants, even closely related species can have largely different profiles, raising the question how CHC differences are mirrored in the regulation of biosynthetic pathways. The neotropical ants Crematogaster levior and Camponotus femoratus both consist of two cryptic species each that are morphologically similar, but express strongly different CHC profiles. This is ideal to study the molecular basis of CHC differences. We thus investigated gene expression differences in f…

The joint evolution of learning and dispersal maintains intraspecific diversity in metapopulations

2021

The evolution of dispersal tendencies and of cognitive abilities have both been intensely studied. Yet little attention has been given to the question of how these two aspects may relate to each other, as a result of their joint evolution. On the one hand, learning abilities may help dispersers to cope with their new habitat. On the other hand, dispersal may sometimes reduce the need for learning, because local environments may differ in how much there is to learn. To get a better understanding of this relationship, we built an individual‐based simulation in which both learning speed and dispersal tendency were free to evolve. We found that both positive and negative correlations could evol…

Nonlinear pulse shaping in optical fibers : a versatile tool for ultrafast photonics and fundamental wave propagation studies

2021

International audience; The study of the combination of Kerr nonlinearity with dispersion in optical fibers has been stimulating much interest since the 80s. If such a combination can seriously impair the quality of high speed optical transmissions, it can on the contrary become an attractive solution to generate new temporal and spectral waveforms. We explain in this talk how to take advantage of the progressive temporal and spectral reshapings that occur upon propagation. We base our discussion on several experimental results obtained in the last decade at the Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Carnot de Bourgogne. Examples exploiting both the normal and anomalous regimes of dispersion will be…
