Increasing incidence and survival of paediatric and adolescent thyroid cancer in Cyprus 1998–2017: A population-based study from the Cyprus Pediatric…
2021
Paediatric and adolescent thyroid cancer incidence rates are increasing in many countries. We determined incidence rates, temporal trends and survival from thyroid cancer diagnosed in childhood and adolescence in Cyprus during 1998-2017.Patients aged 0-19 years, diagnosed with thyroid cancer in the Pediatric Oncology Registry of Cyprus were included. Crude incidence rates, age standardized rates, time trends and overall survival were analysed. Annual rates and temporal trends were calculated using Microsoft Excel 2016 and Joinpoint regression analysis.Eighty-one cases (76.5 % female, 23.5 % male) were identified. The crude rates (per 100,000 persons) were for both sexes 2.00 (95 % CI 1.61, …
Microplastics and the functional traits of fishes: A global meta‐analysis
2021
Over the years, concern about the effects of microplastics has grown. Here, we answered the main question “What are the impacts of microplastics on the functional traits of fish species?” through a meta-analysis. The general impact of microplastic exposure on the functional traits of fishes and specifically on eight variables, namely, behaviour, development, fecundity, feeding, growth, health, hatching and survival was explored. Subgroup analyses were performed to detect correlations between the impact of microplastics and the following factors: species, life stage, habitat, water column habitat, day of exposure to microplastics and microplastic size, type and shape. A meta-regression analy…
Enhanced acoustic pressure sensors based on coherent perfect absorber-laser effect
2021
Lasing is a well-established field in optics with several applications. Yet, having lasing or huge amplification in other wave systems remains an elusive goal. Here, we utilize the concept of coherent perfect absorber-laser to realize an acoustic analog of laser with a proven amplification of more than 10 4 in terms of the scattered acoustic signal at a frequency of a few kHz. The obtained acoustic laser (or the coherent perfect absorber-laser) is shown to possess extremely high sensitivity and figure of merit with regard to ultra-small variations of the pressure (density and compressibility) and suggests its evident potential to build future acoustic pressure devices such as precise sensor…
Outcomes for adults with anorexia nervosa who do not respond early to outpatient treatment
2021
Objective: To better understand those patients with anorexia nervosa who do not show early response to treatment and are likely to have poorer outcome. Method: From an existing data set of 187 patients with anorexia nervosa across 22 eating disorder outpatient services in the United Kingdom, participants who had started treatment and had at least one body mass index (BMI) observation in the first 6 weeks of treatment were eligible for these secondary analyses (N = 65), a latent class analysis of BMI change over the first 6 weeks of treatment. Fifty-six patients showed no early change in BMI. We used logistic regression to examine predictors of good outcome in the 40 participants who had 12-…
Moral Orders of Mobility: Youth Aspirations and ‘Doing’ Social Position in Finland
2021
By studying the moral orders that young Finnish adults (aged 18–30) attach to geographical mobility, this article reveals previously neglected relationships between aspiration and mobility. The 40 young adult interviewees are living in the midst of Finnish political debates about youth aspiration, which emphasise geographical rather than social mobility as a way to enhance employability and demonstrate aspiration. We argue that young people themselves use the discourse of geographical mobility by leaning on morally ordered social positionings which tend to be classed and gendered. They position themselves on a moral map of Finnish society, and in doing so they work and rework the social or…

Adaptive Mechanisms of Somatostatin-Positive Interneurons after Traumatic Brain Injury through a Switch of α Subunits in L-Type Voltage-Gated Calcium…
2021
Abstract Unilateral traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes cortical dysfunctions spreading to the primarily undamaged hemisphere. This phenomenon, called transhemispheric diaschisis, is mediated by an imbalance of glutamatergic versus GABAergic neurotransmission. This study investigated the role of GABAergic, somatostatin-positive (SST) interneurons in the contralateral hemisphere 72 h after unilateral TBI. The brain injury was induced to the primary motor/somatosensory cortex of glutamate decarboxylase 67–green fluorescent protein (GAD67-GFP) knock-in mice at postnatal days 19–21 under anesthesia in vivo. Single GFP+ interneurons of the undamaged, contralateral cortex were isolated by fluores…

2021 European Society of Hypertension practice guidelines for office and out-of-office blood pressure measurement.
2021
High blood pressure (BP) is the leading modifiable risk factor for morbidity and mortality worldwide. The basis for diagnosing and managing hypertension is the measurement of BP, which is routinely used to initiate or rule out costly investigations and long-term therapeutic interventions. Inadequate measurement methodology or use of inaccurate BP measuring devices can lead to overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment, or underdiagnosis and exposure to preventable cardiovascular disease (CVD). Periodontal outcomes of anterior fixed partial dentures on teeth treated with the biologically oriented preparation technique: A 6-year prospective c…
2021
Abstract Statement of problem One of the most frequent complications in participants with fixed partial dentures (FPDs) is the apical migration of the gingival margin, which may be associated with factors such as fit, gingival margin location, or tooth preparation type. The prevalence of the complication in participants restored with FPDs prepared by using the biologically oriented preparation technique (BOPT) is unclear. Purpose The purpose of this prospective clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical and biologic outcomes of FPDs on teeth prepared by using the BOPT, over a 6-year follow-up period. Material and methods Tooth-supported zirconia FPDs in the anterior region prepared by usin…
Short‐term neuropsychiatric outcomes and quality of life in COVID‐19 survivors
2021
BACKGROUND: The general medical impacts of coronavirus (COVID-19) are increasingly appreciated. Canaloplasty with mitomycin C after previous combined cataract surgery and Schlemm's canal microstent implantation.
2021
We report on a 56-year-old male with primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent mitomycin C augmented canaloplasty enabling filtration in the right eye after cataract surgery combined with a Schlemm’s canal microstent 3 years previously. He showed progressive glaucomatous optic neuropathy and was highly myopic (axial length 32.05 mm, spherical equivalent −18.75 dioptres in the right eye). Augmented canaloplasty was performed uneventfully and 360° catheterisation was achieved followed by the placement of a 10-0 polypropylene suture in Schlemm’s canal. Intraocular pressure (IOP) in the first post-operative day was reduced from 19 to 6 mmHg. At 1-month follow-up IOP was 12 mmHg off glaucoma me…
Amidino substituted 2-aminophenols: biologically important building blocks for the amidino-functionalization of 2-substituted benzoxazoles
2021
Unlike the closely related and widely investigated amidino-substituted benzimidazoles and benzothiazoles with a range of demonstrated biological activities, the matching benzoxazole analogues still remain a largely understudied and not systematically evaluated class of compounds. To address this challenge, we utilized the Pinner reaction to convert isomeric cyano-substituted 2- aminophenols into their amidine derivatives, which were isolated as hydrochlorides and/or zwitterions, and whose structure was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The key step during the Pinner synthesis of the crucial carboximidate intermediates was characterized through mechanistic DFT calculations, with…
An Adaptive Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers
2021
AbstractThe alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is a powerful splitting algorithm for linearly constrained convex optimization problems. In view of its popularity and applicability, a growing attention is drawn toward the ADMM in nonconvex settings. Recent studies of minimization problems for nonconvex functions include various combinations of assumptions on the objective function including, in particular, a Lipschitz gradient assumption. We consider the case where the objective is the sum of a strongly convex function and a weakly convex function. To this end, we present and study an adaptive version of the ADMM which incorporates generalized notions of convexity and penalty…

Technological screening and application of Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated from fermented honey by-products for the sensory improvement of …
2021
“Spiritu re fascitrari” is a Sicilian alcoholic beverage obtained through distillation of a decoction of spontaneously fermented honey by-products (FHP). The production process often leads to sensorial defects due to the unstable alcoholic fermentation. The objective of this work was to select Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains from FHP to be used as starter in decoction fermentation. Based on chemical, microbiological and technological data, from a total of 91 strains three S. cerevisae were selected for further testing to produce FHP at laboratory scale level. After FHP distillation, the analysis of volatile organic compounds showed a complex mixture of sensory active molecules, mainly alco…

Background: The Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior Questionnaire (SREBQ) is an economical way of assessing an individual's self-regulatory abilities regarding eating behavior. Such scales are needed in the German population; therefore, the purpose of the present study was the translation and validation of a German version of the SREBQ.Method: First, we conducted a pilot study (Study 1; N = 371) after the translation procedure. Second, we assessed the final scale in a representative sample of the German population (Sample 2; N = 2,483) and its underlying factor structure. Further, we tested for measurement invariance and evaluated the SREBQ's associations with related scales to explore conve…
28-year incidence and time trends of childhood leukaemia in former East Germany compared to West Germany after German reunification: A study from the…
2021
Abstract Background The aetiology of childhood leukaemia is largely unknown. Analyses of geographical differences may enhance aetiologic insights. The reunification of Germany in 1990 provides a unique opportunity to evaluate incidence patterns and time trends in two merging countries with substantial lifestyle, social and socioeconomic differences. With this study we provide an extensive assessment of 28-year incidence patterns and temporal trends after the German reunification. Methods We identified all children diagnosed with a lymphoid leukaemia (LL) or acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) before the age of 15 years between 1991 and 2018 using the German Childhood Cancer Registry (N = 14,922),…
Endohedral Mixed Aggregates: Sodium Alkoxide Cages with Organic or Inorganic Central Anions and Variable Hull.
2021
Abstract Alkali metal alkoxides are widely used in chemistry due to their Brønsted basic and nucleophilic properties. Potassium alkoxides assist alkyllithium in the metalation of hydrocarbons in Lochmann‐Schlosser‐bases. Both compounds form mixed aggregates, which enhance the thermal stability, solubility, and the basic reactivity of these mixtures. A very unusual spherical mixed alkoxy aggregate was discovered by Grützmacher et al., where a central dihydrogen phosphide anion is surrounded by a highly dynamic shell of thirteen sodium atoms and a hull of twelve tert‐butoxide groups. This structural motif can be reproduced by a reaction of trimethylsilyl compounds of methane, halogens, or pse…
A human multisystem disorder with autoinflammation, leukoencephalopathy and hepatopathy is caused by mutations in C2orf69
2021
AbstractBackgroundDeciphering the function of the many genes previously classified as uncharacterized “open reading frame” (orf) completes our understanding of cell function and its pathophysiology.MethodsWhole-exome sequencing, yeast 2-hybrid and transcriptome analyses together with molecular characterization are used here to uncover the function of the C2orf69 gene.ResultsWe identify loss-of-function mutations in the uncharacterized C2orf69 gene in eight individuals with brain abnormalities involving hypomyelination and microcephaly, liver dysfunction and recurrent autoinflammation. C2orf69 contains an N-terminal signal peptide that is required and sufficient for mitochondrial localizatio…
Xanastur (brachiopoda, stringocephalacea) nomen novum pro Xana García-Alcalde, 1972 (non Xana kurdjumov, 1917, hymenoptera, hexapoda)
2021
Garcia-Alcalde (1972) proposed the new genus Xana (type species Xana bubo Garcia-Alcalde, 1972) for a terebratulid brachiopod included in the superfamily Stringocephalacea from the Lower Devonian of the Cantabrian Mountains (Northwestern Spain). In an email message sent on April 3, 2018, the entomologist Dr. Eduardo I. Faundez, from the Patagonia Institute, Magallanes University, Chile, warned the author that Xana was a name previously used by Kurdjumov (1917) for a hymenopteran genus. Xana Garcia-Alcalde, 1972 would be so a later homonym of Xana Kurdjumov, 1917. In accordance with articles 52.3, 52.4, 53.2, 60.3 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) (2000), it is prop…
Nomenclatural notes on Fabaceae described from Sicily
2021
A note about some taxa in Anthyllis and Trifolium (Fabaceae) described from Sicily is presented. Concerning Trifolium, we provide the lectotypification of the name T. pratense var. semipurpureum (≡ T. pratense subsp. semipurpureum), using a specimen preserved at PAL (Todaro’s collection). Concerning the Lojacono-Pojero’s name Vulneraria heterophylla var. parvula, it is lectotypified by a specimen at G. A neotype at NAP is proposed for the Gussone’s name Vulneraria heterophylla var. albiflora. As this latter name is applied to a taxon accepted here at specific rank, a new combination is validated. On the contrary, A. heterophylla var. parvula is considered as a new heterotypic synonym of Ant…

Single-trial-based Temporal Principal Component Analysis on Extracting Event-related Potentials of Interest for an Individual Subject
2021
Abstract Temporal principal component analysis (t-PCA) has been widely used to extract event-related potentials (ERPs) at the group level of multiple subjects’ ERP data. The key assumption of group t-PCA analysis is that desired ERPs of all subjects share the same waveforms (i.e., temporal components), whereas waveforms of different subjects’ ERPs can be variant in phases, peak latencies and so on, to some extent. Additionally, several PCA-extracted components coming from the same ERP dataset failed to be statistically analysed simultaneously because their polarities and amplitudes were indeterminate. To fill these gaps, a novel technique was proposed and employed to extract desired ERP fro…
Neutralization of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 pseudovirus by BNT162b2 vaccine–elicited human sera
2021
Vaccine protects against B1.1.7 variant The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) B1.1.7 (VOC 202012/01) variant that emerged in late 2020 in the United Kingdom has many changes in the spike protein gene. Three of these are associated with enhanced infectivity and transmissibility, and there are concerns that B.1.1.7 might compromise the effectiveness of the vaccine. Muik et al. compared the neutralization efficacy of sera from 40 subjects immunized with the BioNTech-Pfizer mRNA vaccine BNT162b2 against a pseudovirus bearing the Wuhan reference strain or the lineage B.1.1.7 spike protein (see the Perspective by Altmann et al.). Serum was derived from 40 subjects in tw…
Use of waggle dance information in honey bees is linked to gene expression in the antennae, but not in the brain.
2021
AbstractCommunication is essential for social animals, but deciding how to utilize information provided by conspecifics is a complex process that depends on environmental and intrinsic factors. Honey bees use a unique form of communication, the waggle dance, to inform nestmates about the location of food sources. However, as in many other animals, experienced individuals often ignore this social information and prefer to rely on prior experiences, i.e. private information. The neurosensory factors that drive the decision to use social information are not yet understood. Here we test whether the decision to use social dance information or private information is linked to gene expression diff…
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and their cardiovascular benefits-The role of the GLP-1 receptor.
2021
Cardiovascular outcome trials revealed cardiovascular benefits for type 2 diabetes mellitus patients when treated with long-acting glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. In the last decade, major advances were made characterising the physiological effects of GLP-1 and its action on numerous targets including brain, liver, kidney, heart and blood vessels. However, the effects of GLP-1 and receptor agonists, and the GLP-1 receptor on the cardiovascular system have not been fully elucidated. We compare results from cardiovascular outcome trials of GLP-1 receptor agonists and review pleiotropic clinical and preclinical data concerning cardiovascular protection beyond glycaemic contr…
Formation Conditions of Titan's and Enceladus's Building Blocks in Saturn's Circumplanetary Disk
2021
Abstract The building blocks of Titan and Enceladus are believed to have formed in a late-stage circumplanetary disk (CPD) around Saturn. Evaluating the evolution of the abundances of volatile species in this disk as a function of the migration, growth, and evaporation of icy grains is then of primary importance to assess the origin of the material that eventually formed these two moons. Here we use a simple prescription of Saturn’s CPD in which the location of the centrifugal radius is varied, to investigate the time evolution of the icelines of water ice, ammonia hydrate, methane clathrate, carbon monoxide, and dinitrogen pure condensates. To match their compositional data, the building b…
Superconductivity provides a giant enhancement to the spin battery effect
2021
We develop a theory of the spin battery effect in superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator (SC/FI) systems taking into account the magnetic proximity effect. We demonstrate that the spin-energy mixing enabled by the superconductivity leads to the enhancement of spin accumulation by several orders of magnitude relative to the normal state. This finding can explain the recently observed giant inverse spin Hall effect generated by thermal magnons in the SC/FI system. We suggest a non-local electrical detection scheme which can directly probe the spin accumulation driven by the magnetization dynamics. We predict a giant Seebeck effect converting the magnon temperature bias into the non-local volt…
Religious Exiting and Social Networks: Computer Simulations of Religious/Secular Pluralism
2021
Statistical models attempting to predict who will disaffiliate from religions have typically accounted for less than 15% of the variation in religious affiliations, suggesting that we have only a partial understanding of this vital social process. Using agent-based simulations in three “artificial societies” (one predominantly religious; one predominantly secular; and one in between), we demonstrate that worldview pluralism within one’s neighborhood and family social networks can be a significant predictor of religious (dis)affiliation but in pluralistic societies worldview diversity is less important and, instead, people move toward worldview neutrality. Our results suggest that there may …
Palaeohistology and palaeopathology of an Aeolosaurini (Sauropoda: Titanosauria) from Morro do Cambambe (Upper Cretaceous, Brazil)
2021
A recent publication of fossil bones of titanosaurs assigned to Aeolosaurini from the Morro do Cambambe site (Mato Grosso state, Brazil, Upper Cretaceous) reported anomalous growth in some of them. Here, we present osteohistological sections of elements to understand not only the microstructure and growth of such bones, but also the nature of those anomalies. Among them, we selected one cervical and one mediumposterior dorsal rib, and a haemal arch. The primary bone of all specimens consisted of a variation of the fibrolamellar complex, with the inner cortex being rich in woven bone with dispersed longitudinal canals, while the outer cortex was parallel-fibred with rows of longitudinal cana…
Modélisation numérique d’impacts à hautes vitesses par la méthode sans maillage Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics. Application aux micro-impacts dans …
2021
Investigations on the ballistic behaviours of soft tissue materials are significant research in a medical and pharmaceutical framework. They mainly focus on particles penetrating or traveling into the soft materials. For instance, in the needle-free drug delivery, the micro-scale particles as drug powders are injected into skin with high velocity, and several factors should be considered such as the particle diameters, trajectories, and momentum or velocities of projectile in this process. There have been investigated by some experiments, but there is still no study from the numerical insights. The numerical methods are suitable to study these kinds of processes. Although grid-based methods …
Role of Chiral Two-Body Currents in Li6 Magnetic Properties in Light of a New Precision Measurement with the Relative Self-Absorption Technique
2021
A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited ${0}_{1}^{+}$ state of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}_{1}^{+}}=8.17(14{)}_{\mathrm{stat}.}(11{)}_{\mathrm{syst}.}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This enables a precision test of the im…
