The cypsela (achene) of Echinacea purpurea as a diffusion unit of a community of microorganisms

2021

AbstractEchinacea purpurea is a plant cultivated worldwide for its pharmaceutical properties, mainly related to the stimulation of the immune system in the treatment of respiratory infections. The cypselas (fruits) of E. purpurea were examined in order to investigate the presence, localization and potential function(s) of endophytic microorganisms. Electron and confocal microscopy observations showed that three different components of microorganisms were associated to cypselas of E. purpurea: (i) one endocellular bacterial component in the cotyledons, enclosed within the host membrane; (ii) another more generic bacterial component adhering to the external side of the perianth; and (iii) a f…

Mental health and health-related quality of life in preschool-aged childhood cancer survivors. Results of the prospective cohort study ikidS-OEVA.

2021

Objectives Long-term survivors of childhood cancer are at increased risk for sequelae such as poor mental health (MH) or impaired health-related quality of life (HrQoL). We aimed to evaluate early adverse effects on MH and HrQoL in young childhood cancer survivors (YCCS) before school entry. Methods In a nationwide prospective cohort study, children with cancer other than brain tumors diagnosed at preschool age and completed cancer treatments were identified from the German Childhood Cancer Registry. The comparison group was children of the same age without a cancer diagnosis who participated in the prospective population-based health survey ikidS. MH problems and HrQoL were assessed by par…

Ordering, phase behavior, and correlations of semiflexible polymers in confinement.

2021

Semiflexible polymers are ubiquitous in biological systems, e.g., as building blocks of the cytoskeleton, and they also play an important role in various materials due to their ability to form liquid-crystalline order. These rigid macromolecules are characterized by numerous (hierarchical) length-scales that define their static and dynamic properties. Confinement can promote uniform order, e.g., through capillary nematization in narrow slits, but it can also introduce long-ranged disruptions of the nematic ordering field through (unavoidable) topological defects in spherical containers. This Perspective concentrates on the theoretical description and computational modeling of such confined …

Rediscovery of Cerroneuroterus apenninus (Trotter, 1923) (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae: Cynipini) a valid species from Italy with description and neotype d…

2021

Neuroterus apenninus Trotter, 1923 associated with a Cerris section oak, Quercus cerris L., was rediscovered in Italy in 2017. Alessandro Trotter (1903) described a leaf gall collected on Q. cerris from the Italian Apennines; he did not obtain the gall inductor and ascribed the galls to the genus Neuroterus, based on morphological similarity with other Neuroterus galls. We have found the same gall and obtained the gall inducer. Detailed study of morphological characters of adults revealed that the species belongs to the genus Cerroneuroterus Melika & Pujade-Villar, 2010. The asexual generation of Cerroneuroterus apenninus comb. n. is described for the first time, a neotype is designated…

Analysis of the γγ→DD¯ reaction and the DD¯ bound state

2021

In this work, we investigate the reaction of $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}D\overline{D}$, taking into account the $S$-wave $D\overline{D}$ final state interaction. By fitting to the $D\overline{D}$ invariant mass distributions measured by the Belle and BABAR Collaborations, we obtain a good reproduction of the data by means of a $D\overline{D}$ amplitude that produces a bound $D\overline{D}$ state with isospin $I=0$ close to threshold. The error bands of the fits indicate, however, that more precise data on this reaction are needed to be more assertive about the position and width of such a state.

Phylogenetic placement of Cailliella praerupticola (Melastomataceae), a rare, monospecific lineage from Guinea, West Africa

2021

The genus Cailliella includes a single species, C. praerupticola, restricted to a sandstone plateau region in Coyah, Dubreka, Forecariah and Kindia Prefectures, Guinea, West Africa. Until its rediscovery in 2016, this species was known only by the type gathering made in 1937. We provide an emended description, photographs of living material, locality and habitat data, and a discussion of its conservation status. We further designate a lectotype for C. praerupticola. On the basis of morphology, Cailliella had been considered an isolated member of the tribe Melastomateae, possibly sister to Melastomastrum. We tested the classification of Cailliella by means of a phylogenetic analysis of C. pr…

Ag44(EBT)26(TPP)4Nanoclusters With Tailored Molecular and Electronic Structure

2021

Although atomically precise metalloid nanoclusters (NCs) of identical size with distinctly different molecular structures are highly desirable to understand the structural effects on the optical and photophysical properties, their synthesis remains highly challenging. Herein, we employed phosphine and thiol capping ligands featuring appropriate steric effects and synthesized a charge-neutral Ag NC with the formula Ag44 (EBT)26 (TPP)4 (EBT: 2-ethylbenzenethiolate; TPP: triphenylphosphine). The single-crystal X-ray structure reveals that this NC has a hollow metal core of Ag12 @Ag20 and a metal-ligand shell of Ag12 (EBT)26 (TPP)4 . The presence of mixed ligands and long V-shaped metal-ligand …

Analysis of composition, morphology, and biosynthesis of cuticular wax in wild type bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and its glossy mutant

2021

Abstract In this study, cuticular wax load, its chemical composition, and biosynthesis, was studied during development of wild type (WT) bilberry fruit and its natural glossy type (GT) mutant. GT fruit cuticular wax load was comparable with WT fruits. In both, the proportion of triterpenoids decreased during fruit development concomitant with increasing proportions of total aliphatic compounds. In GT fruit, a higher proportion of triterpenoids in cuticular wax was accompanied by a lower proportion of fatty acids and ketones compared to WT fruit as well as lower density of crystalloid structures on berry surfaces. Our results suggest that the glossy phenotype could be caused by the absence o…

Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight

2021

From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia…

Self-induced spin-orbit torques in metallic ferromagnets

2021

We present a phenomenological theory of spin-orbit torques in a metallic ferromagnet with spin-relaxing boundaries. The model is rooted in the coupled diffusion of charge and spin in the bulk of the ferromagnet, where we account for the anomalous Hall effects as well as the anisotropic magnetoresistance in the corresponding constitutive relations for both charge and spin sectors. The diffusion equations are supplemented with suitable boundary conditions reflecting the spin-sink capacity of the environment. In inversion-asymmetric heterostructures, the uncompensated spin accumulation exerts a dissipative torque on the order parameter, giving rise to a current-dependent linewidth in the ferro…

Development of Burnout Syndrome in Non-university Teachers: Influence of Demand and Resource Variables.

2021

Psychosocial risks at work are an important occupational problem since they can have an impact on workers' health, productivity, absenteeism, and company profits. Among their consequences, burnout stands out for its prevalence and associated consequences. This problem is particularly noteworthy in the case of teachers. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence of some psychosocial factors (demand and resource variables) and risks in burnout development, taking into consideration the levels of burnout according to the Spanish Burnout Inventory (SBI). This paper contributes to advancing knowledge on this issue by analyzing the influence of work characteristics and personal characteris…

Near‐IR Radiation‐Induced Attenuation of Aluminosilicate Optical Fibers

2021

The X-ray radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) growth kinetics are studied online in different single-mode aluminosilicate optical fibers in the near-IR (NIR) domain to evaluate their potential in terms of dosimetry. The optical fibers differ by Al contents, core sizes, drawing parameters, and also by a preform deposition process. The data show no dependence of the RIA on all these parameters, a positive result for the design of point or distributed radiation detectors exploiting RIA to monitor the dose. The RIA growth rate is unchanged for dose rates changing from 0.073 to 6.25 Gy(SiO2) s−1, and the RIA linearly increases with the dose up to 2 kGy(SiO2). Small but noticeable RIA changes are…

What are the determinants of adherence to the mediterranean diet?

2021

Current evidence suggests that adherence to traditional dietary patterns are slowly disappearing in favour of a globalised market, in which higher availability of processed, ready-to-use, energy-dense foods undermines the consumption of fresh, locally produced goods ... When exploring the nutritional quality of processed foods, excess content in added free sugars, saturated and hydrogenated fats, together with scarcity in fibre and vitamins, ...

[Cardiovascular health in Asian immigrants to Italy: risk factors, pathogenesis and pharmacological treatment].

2021

In the last decades a significant increase of the migratory phenomenon from South Asian countries to the western world has occurred due to several factors, such as economic crisis, political instabilities, persecutions and wars. It is well established that South Asians (SA) have a higher prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and premature onset of myocardial infarction episodes than other populations. This higher predisposition might be caused by genetic factors, common in both SA residing in their birth country and in those residing abroad, but it may also be due to the new spatial environment in which they live. We have found a higher prevalence of traditional cardiovascular risk fa…

The development of digital solutions is becoming increasingly important in facing global challenges. Therefore, research on this topic is important in taking into account cardiac patients’ experiences of the rehabilitation process for the design of digital counseling solutions. The aim of the present qualitative study was to explore the different meanings that patients give to the rehabilitation process using a Glaserian grounded theory (GT) approach. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 participants from a rehabilitation center in Finland. The findings indicated a “complex trust-building process” core category comprising five categories of trust-building in rehabilitation: feeling…

Is Facebook driving tabloidization?

2021

In highly commercialized media markets, newspapers must be present on social media whose logic favours user engagement, shareworthiness, and virality. This might foster increasingly tabloid-like reporting, but empirical studies on the actual effects on newspaper content are widely lacking. We investigate how far newspaper type (quality paper vs. tabloid) and distribution channel (print version, website, Facebook page) influences the degree of tabloidization of two newspapers’ political news. In a content analysis of political news articles of FAZ and BILD in their print versions, on their websites, and on their Facebook pages (n=2,441), we measure tabloidization on three dimensions (topic, …

Both plants and animals are endowed with sophisticated innate immune systems to combat microbial attack. In these multicellular eukaryotes, innate immunity implies the presence of cell surface receptors and intracellular receptors able to detect danger signal referred as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Membrane-associated pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), C-type lectin receptors (CLRs), receptor-like kinases (RLKs), and receptor-like proteins (RLPs) are employed by these organisms for sensing different invasion patterns before triggering antimicrobial defenses that can be associated with…

Large-Sample Properties of Blind Estimation of the Linear Discriminant Using Projection Pursuit

2021

We study the estimation of the linear discriminant with projection pursuit, a method that is blind in the sense that it does not use the class labels in the estimation. Our viewpoint is asymptotic and, as our main contribution, we derive central limit theorems for estimators based on three different projection indices, skewness, kurtosis and their convex combination. The results show that in each case the limiting covariance matrix is proportional to that of linear discriminant analysis (LDA), an unblind estimator of the discriminant. An extensive comparative study between the asymptotic variances reveals that projection pursuit is able to achieve efficiency equal to LDA when the groups are…

Intervención coactiva en el mercado: procesos, modalidades y efectos

2021

Developing Böhm-Bawerk’s (1914) Macht oder ökonomisches Ge-setz, we characterize the different intervention modalities as coercive «fixing» of prices, goods (quantities or modes of performing) or persons, also with their effects. Given that the subjective but real forces underlying market processes respond with effects which are opposite to those pursued, the «intervener» or controller would be induced to an in crescendo «fixing» of more and more as-pects of reality. We also show fractional reserve (banking) as another kind of intervention, since it produces or induces the same effects, including a call to implement monopolistic schemes.

Information, Communications and Media Technologies for Sustainability: Constructing Data-Driven Policy Narratives

This paper introduces the idea of data-driven narratives to examine how the use of information, communications, and media technologies (ICMTs) impacts the sustainable growth of economies. While ICMTs have regularly been advocated as a policy tool for growth and development, there is a research gap in empirical studies validating how such policies may be effective. This analysis is based on historical panel data from 39 economies across the developed North (19) and developing South (20). The industry-standard Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) methodology was applied to construct narratives that weave extant theories with empirical data.
