Cardiovascular disease burden: Italian and global perspectives
2021
Background Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is still the leading cause of death worldwide, responsible for an estimated 17.8 million deaths globally in 2017, accounting for 31.8% of all deaths. In this review, we aim to provide an updated overview of CVD burden from an Italian and a global perspective. Methods Crude and age-standardized incidence and prevalence, as well as age-standardized mortality rate and morbidity rate (expressed as disability-adjusted life years - DALYs), of different cardiovascular conditions, derived from the Global Burden of Disease Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, were reported and compared between Italy and the world. Results Crude prevalence of CVD in Ita…
Structure, ferroelasticity and Goldilocks zone phase transitions in C3H5N2Al(SO4)2·6H2O
2021
The single crystal growth and sequence of reversible phase transition are described for C3H5N2Al(SO4)2·6H2O. Thermal and structural analyses combined with dielectric studies and optical observations revealed the structural phase transition at T 1 = 339/340 K (I↔II) and T 2 = 347/348 K (II↔III) on heating and cooling, respectively. Both phase transitions are of the first-order type. The symmetry changes from monoclinic to trigonal phase. At 293 K, the large crystals are usually divided into numerous domains of the ferroelastic type that disappear above T 1 on heating and reappear below T 1 on cooling. The domain structure pattern is characteristic for the transition between trigonal and mono…
Decomposition of Microbial Necromass Is Divergent at the Individual Taxonomic Level in Soil
2021
The turnover of microbial biomass plays an important part in providing a significant source of carbon (C) to soil organic C. However, whether the decomposition of microbial necromass (non-living microbial biomass) in the soil varies at the individual taxa level remains largely unknown. To fill up these gaps, we compared the necromass decomposition of bacterial and archaeal taxa by separating live microbial biomass with 18O-stable isotope probing from dead microbial biomass in soil. Our results showed that most of the microbial necromass at the operational taxonomic unit level (88.51%), which mainly belong to Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Proteobacteria, decomposed sig…
Mitochondrial bioenergetic pathways in blood leukocyte transcriptome decrease after intensive weight loss but are rescued following weight regain in …
2021
Prolonged periods of energy deficit leading to weight loss induce metabolic adaptations resulting in reduced energy expenditure, but the mechanisms for energy conservation are incompletely understood. We examined 42 healthy athletic females (age 27.5 +/- 4.0 years, body mass index 23.4 +/- 1.7 kg/m(2)) who volunteered into either a group dieting for physique competition (n = 25) or a control group (n = 17). The diet group substantially reduced their energy intake and moderately increased exercise levels to induce loss of fat mass that was regained during a voluntary weight regain period. The control group maintained their typical lifestyle habits and body mass as instructed. From the diet g…
Modélisation numérique d’impacts à hautes vitesses par la méthode sans maillage Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics. Application aux micro-impacts dans …
2021
Investigations on the ballistic behaviours of soft tissue materials are significant research in a medical and pharmaceutical framework. They mainly focus on particles penetrating or traveling into the soft materials. For instance, in the needle-free drug delivery, the micro-scale particles as drug powders are injected into skin with high velocity, and several factors should be considered such as the particle diameters, trajectories, and momentum or velocities of projectile in this process. There have been investigated by some experiments, but there is still no study from the numerical insights. The numerical methods are suitable to study these kinds of processes. Although grid-based methods …
Role of Chiral Two-Body Currents in Li6 Magnetic Properties in Light of a New Precision Measurement with the Relative Self-Absorption Technique
2021
A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited ${0}_{1}^{+}$ state of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},{0}_{1}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{1}_{1}^{+}}=8.17(14{)}_{\mathrm{stat}.}(11{)}_{\mathrm{syst}.}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{eV}$ provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This enables a precision test of the im…
Posttraumatic Growth and Spirituality in Mothers of Children with Pediatric Cancer
2021
A child’s cancer, as a life-threatening illness, is classified as a traumatic event both for the child him-/herself and for his/her relatives. Struggling with a traumatic experience can bring positive consequences for an individual, which is referred to as posttraumatic growth. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between posttraumatic growth and spirituality understood as a personal resource in mothers of children with pediatric cancer. In total, 55 mothers whose children were in the phase of treatment and who had been staying with them in the hospital filled in a Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Self-description Questionnaire of Spirituality, and the author’s short questio…
Does trait-based joint species distribution modelling reveal the signature of competition in stream macroinvertebrate communities?
2021
1. The occupancy and abundance of species are jointly driven by local factors, such as environmental characteristics and biotic interactions, and regional‐scale factors, such as dispersal and climate. Recently, it has been shown that biotic interactions shape species occupancies and abundances beyond local extents. However, for small ectothermic animals, particularly for those occurring in freshwater environments, the importance of biotic interactions remains understudied. Species‐to‐species associations from joint species distribution models (i.e. species associations while controlling for environmental characteristics) are increasingly used to draw hypotheses of which species possibly sho…
The Effects of Probiotics and Prebiotics on Gastrointestinal and Behavioural Symptoms in Autism Spectrum Disorder
2021
Background: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are a group of prevalent neuropsychiatric disorders. They present a complex and unknown etiology, which in most cases includes significant peripheral alterations outside the brain such as in the composition of gut microbiota. Because the gut microbiota is involved in modulating the gut-brain axis, several studies have suggested that the microbiome in the gut can modify metabolites which are able to cross the blood-brain barrier and modulate brain function. Methods: We reviewed the current evidence regarding microbiota alterations in patients with ASD and the effects of the administration of probiotics and prebiotics in these patients, both in te…

Introduction (Neo-)adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer has a deleterious impact on muscle tissue resulting in reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, skeletal muscle mass and function. Physical exercise during treatment may counteract some of these negative effects. However, the effects of resistance training (RT) alone have never been explored. The present study aims to investigate if heavy-load RT during (neo-)adjuvant chemotherapy counteracts deleterious effects on skeletal muscle in women diagnosed with breast cancer. We hypothesize that (neo-)adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy will reduce muscle fiber size, impair mitochondrial function, and increase indicators of cellular stress and …

Lipid presentation by the protein C receptor links coagulation with autoimmunity.
2021
A lipid-protein autoimmunity target Several autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus and primary antiphospholipid syndrome, are characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs). These molecules can activate the complement and coagulation cascades, which contributes to pathologies such as thrombosis, stroke, and pregnancy complications. Müller-Calleja et al. found that endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) in complex with lysobisphosphatidic acid (LBPA) is the cell-surface target for aPL and mediates its internalization (see the Perspective by Kaplan). aPL binding to EPCR-LBPA resulted in the activation of tissue factor–mediated coagulation and interfero…
Palaeohistology and palaeopathology of an Aeolosaurini (Sauropoda: Titanosauria) from Morro do Cambambe (Upper Cretaceous, Brazil)
2021
A recent publication of fossil bones of titanosaurs assigned to Aeolosaurini from the Morro do Cambambe site (Mato Grosso state, Brazil, Upper Cretaceous) reported anomalous growth in some of them. Here, we present osteohistological sections of elements to understand not only the microstructure and growth of such bones, but also the nature of those anomalies. Among them, we selected one cervical and one mediumposterior dorsal rib, and a haemal arch. The primary bone of all specimens consisted of a variation of the fibrolamellar complex, with the inner cortex being rich in woven bone with dispersed longitudinal canals, while the outer cortex was parallel-fibred with rows of longitudinal cana…

Trace elements and stable isotopes in penguin chicks and eggs: A baseline for monitoring the Ross Sea MPA and trophic transfer studies.
2021
Multi-tissue trace elements (TEs), C, N concentrations and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) of chick carcasses and eggs of Adelie and Emperor penguins were studied to i) provide reference data before the recent institution of the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (Antarctica), and ii) provide conversion factors that allow estimating C, N, δ13C and δ15N in edible tissues from non-edible ones, thus improving the use of stable isotopes in contamination and trophic transfer studies. Higher concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn and Pb were found in chick carcasses than in eggs, suggesting increasing contamination in recent decades and high toxicity risks for penguin consumers. Isotopic conversion fa…

Holocene climate in Central Europe was characterized by variations on millennial to decadal time scales. Speleothems provide the opportunity to study such palaeoclimate variability using high temporal resolution proxy records, and offer precise age models by U-series dating. However, the significance of proxy records from an individual speleothem is still a matter of debate, and limited sample availability often hampers the possibility to reproduce proxy records or to resolve spatial climate patterns. Here we present a palaeoclimate record based on four stalagmites from the Hüttenbläserschachthöhle (HBSH), western Germany. Two specimens cover almost the entire Holocene, with a short hiatus …

Genetic variations in the PSMA6 and PSMC6 proteasome genes are associated with multiple sclerosis and response to interferon‑β therapy in Latvians
2021
Several polymorphisms in genes related to the ubiquitin-proteasome system exhibit an association with pathogenesis and prognosis of various human autoimmune diseases. Our previous study reported the association between multiple sclerosis (MS) and the PSMA3-rs2348071 polymorphism in the Latvian population. The current study aimed to evaluate the PSMA6 and PSMC6 genetic variations, their interaction between each other and with the rs2348071, on the susceptibility to MS risk and response to therapy in the Latvian population. PSMA6-rs2277460, -rs1048990 and PSMC6-rs2295826, -rs2295827 were genotyped in the MS case/control study and analysed in terms of genotype-protein correlation network. The …
Developing common protocols to measure tundra herbivory across spatial scales
2021
Understanding and predicting large-scale ecological responses to global environmental change requires comparative studies across geographic scales with coordinated efforts and standardized methodologies. We designed, applied and assessed standardized protocols to measure tundra herbivory at three spatial scales: plot, site (habitat), and study area (landscape). The plot and site-level protocols were tested in the field during summers 2014-2015 at eleven sites, nine of them comprising warming experimental plots included in the International Tundra Experiment (ITEX). The study area protocols were assessed during 2014-2018 at 24 study areas across the Arctic. Our protocols provide comparable a…

Pro- and Antitumorigenic Capacity of Immunoproteasomes in Shaping the Tumor Microenvironment
2021
Abstract Apart from the constitutive proteasome, the immunoproteasome that comprises the three proteolytic subunits LMP2, MECL-1, and LMP7 is expressed in most immune cells. In this study, we describe opposing roles for immunoproteasomes in regulating the tumor microenvironment (TME). During chronic inflammation, immunoproteasomes modulated the expression of protumorigenic cytokines and chemokines and enhanced infiltration of innate immune cells, thus triggering the onset of colitis-associated carcinogenesis (CAC) in wild-type mice. Consequently, immunoproteasome-deficient animals (LMP2/MECL-1/LMP7–null mice) were almost completely resistant to CAC development. In patients with ulcerative c…
Can phthalates move into the eggs of the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta? The case of the nests on the Linosa Island in the Mediterranean Sea
2021
During the monitoring of Caretta caretta nests on the island of Linosa, 30 unhatched eggs from four nests were collected to study the presence of phthalates in their three components (shell, yolk, and albumen). Four phthalates, namely diethyl (DEP), dibutyl (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) (DEHP), and dioctyl (DOTP) phthalic acid esters (PAE), which are widely used as additives in plastics, were detected in all egg components. The most frequently found phthalate was DBP, followed by DEHP in eggshell and yolk. Dimethyl- (DMP) and butylbenzyl-phthalate (BBP) were below the limits of detection for all samples. The high total phthalate recorded in the yolk suggests that contamination could arise by vit…

The abundance of microplastics (MPs) in the atmosphere, on land, and especially in water bodies is well acknowledged. In this study, we establish an optical method based on three different techniques, namely, specular reflection to probe the medium, transmission spectroscopy measurements for the detection and identification, and a speckle pattern for monitoring the sedimentation of MPs filtrated from wastewater sludge and suspended in ethanol. We used first Raman measurements to estimate the presence and types of different MPs in wastewater sludge samples. We also used microscopy to identify the shapes of the main MPs. This allowed us to create a teaching set of samples to be characterized …
Addressing the importance of melanoma tumor‑infiltrating lymphocytes in disease progression and clinicopathological characteristics
2021
Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in primary cutaneous melanoma are considered to represent the host's antitumor immunological response; however, whether there are associations between TIL grade and histopathological characteristics and disease survival remains controversial. BRAF mutational status has been established as a routine screening method in advanced malignant melanoma, and worse prognosis rates have been demonstrated in patients harboring BRAF mutations. However, the general impact of BRAF mutational status on survival and histopathological characteristics is still debated. The aim of the present study was to compare the value of the assessment of TIL grade in stages I-II nod…
The future of paleoclimate
2021
Our understanding of natural climate variability rapidly declines over the Common Era (CE) as the pre-instrumental temperature amplitude differs substantially among large-scale reconstructions. Highlighting such differences and emphasizing paleoclimatic findings is crucial for placing anthropogenic climate change in a long-term context. We argue that more proxy records are needed to accurately reconstruct first millennium CE temperature variability and value regional studies producing such data.
Vorticity Determines the Force on Bodies Immersed in Active Fluids
2021
When immersed into a fluid of active Brownian particles, passive bodies might start to undergo linear or angular directed motion depending on their shape. Here we exploit the divergence theorem to relate the forces responsible for this motion to the density and current induced by--but far away from--the body. In general, the force is composed of two contributions: due to the strength of the dipolar field component and due to particles leaving the boundary, generating a non-vanishing vorticity of the polarization. We derive and numerically corroborate results for periodic systems, which are fundamentally different from unbounded systems with forces that scale with the area of the system. We …
Long-term evolution of hepatocellular adenomas at MRI follow-up
2021
Background Hepatocellular adenomas (HCAs) are rare benign liver tumors. Guidelines recommend continued surveillance of patients diagnosed with HCAs, but these guidelines are mainly based on small studies or expert opinion. Purpose To analyze the long-term evolution of HCAs, including solitary and multiple lesions, and to identify predictive features of progression with MRI. Materials and Methods In a retrospective study, patients diagnosed with pathologically proven solitary or multiple HCAs between January 2004 and December 2015 were included; β-catenin-mutated HCAs and HCAs with foci of malignancy were considered to be at risk for progression. MRI examinations were analyzed, and tumor evo…
