Phenotypic variability in patients with generalised resistance to thyroid hormone.

Genetic linkage of generalised resistance to thyroid hormone (GRTH) to the human thyroid receptor beta 1 gene has been identified. To date 38 different mutations in several kindreds have been documented. We report on a family with GRTH displaying an adenine for guanine substitution at nucleotide 1234 resulting in a threonine for alanine substitution at codon 317 of exon 9. This mutation has been described for different phenotypes, suggesting that the heterogeneity in GRTH may be the result of multiple genetic factors.

Motion of the wave-function zeros in spin-boson systems.

In the analytic Bargmann representation associated with the harmonic oscillator and spin coherent states, the wave functions considered as consisting of entire complex functions can be factorized in terms of their zeros in a unique way. The Schr\"odinger equation of motion for the wave function is turned to a system of equations for the zeros of the wave function. The motion of these zeros as a nonlinear flow of points is studied and interpreted for linear and nonlinear bosonic and spin Hamiltonians. Attention is given to the study of the zeros of the Jaynes-Cummings model and to its finite analog. Numerical solutions are derived and dicussed.

During long-term therapy of hyperuricaemia with allopurinol (300 mg/d) two patients developed generalized granuloma annulare. The diagnoses were confirmed by histology; concomitant diseases, especially diabetes mellitus, were not detectable. Following discontinuation of allopurinol therapy, cutaneous granulomas healed without relapse. Hyperuricaemia could be controlled by low-purine diet and medication avoiding allopurinol. The clinical history of our two patients suggested a causal connection between allopurinol therapy and generalized granuloma annulare. For this reason we rate the development of this disease in both cases as a rare but significant side effect of allopurinol. This should …

Symptoms and complications of pertussis in adults

There is increasing evidence that pertussis occurs frequently in adults, but there is limited information on the clinical course of this disease beyond childhood. A household contact study on the efficacy of an acellular pertussis vaccine was used to study the symptoms of pertussis in adults. Among 257 patients with pertussis identified in 121 families during a two-year period in one study center with a low whole-cell pertussis-vaccine uptake, 79 (30.7%) were adults, aged 19–83 years (mean age: 36 years) with a 1:1.8 male to female ratio. 5-nitro-3-thiophenecarboxanilide (NTCA3) was clearly mutagenic in Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98, YG1021 (the strain with elevated nitroreductase) and YG1024 (the strain with elevated O-acetyltransferase) and only slightly mutagenic at the gpt locus in AS52 cells. The present work aimed to assess the existence of a regular ultradian cyclicity underlying the variations in amplitude of the N1-P2 component of acoustic EP during a relatively long recording session and investigate its relationship with behavioral measure as RT to the same stimulus. 128 tones were presented to each subject; 128 RTs and the associated EPs to target stimuli were recorded. Joint brood guarding in parent bugs — an experiment on defence against predation

Females of Elasmucha grisea defend their eggs and small nymphs against invertebrate predators. Females sometimes guard their clutches side by side on the same birch leaf. We studied benefits of this joint guarding both in the field and in the laboratory. We found that adjacent females had significantly larger clutches than solitary females. In the laboratory, we studied the effectiveness of joint versus single defence against ant (Formica uralensis) predators. A method is presented which allows the calculation of phase diagrams (spinodal, binodal and tie lines) on the basis of the Gibbs energy of mixing ΔG. No derivatives of ΔG with respect to the composition variables are required. This method is particularly useful in cases where the composition dependence of ΔG is very complex and no analytical representation of the derivatives can be given. The method is applied to a ternary mixture of two homopolymers with a copolymer consisting of the same monomers. Summary The variability of nine different isozyme systems, chromosome number, colour of fresh and dried latex and presence or absence of meconic acid was investigated in altogether 45 populations of Papaver dubium and P. lecoqii mainly from C Europe. It was found that P. dubium is hexaploid with 2n = 42 chromosomes, has brown dried latex, and contains meconic acid. P. lecoqii is tetraploid with 2n = 28 chromosomes, has red dried latex, and lacks meconic acid. A nonradioactive method is described that detects 10 to 100 legionellae in 1 ml of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. DNA is purified by a proteinase K-phenol protocol or with a commercial DNA preparation kit and amplified by PCR with amplimers specific for the 16S rRNA gene of Legionella pneumophila. The upstream primer is 5' biotinylated. The amplification product is immobilized on streptavidin-coated microtiter plates. The importance of atrioventricular synchronous pacing compared with single-chamber rate-responsive pacing is still under discussion, especially for low-intensity workload representing daily life activities. We evaluated hemodynamics in single-lead VDD pacing versus VVIR pacing in 11 patients (8 men and 3 women, aged 58.6 +/- 13.8 years) with normal left ventricular function and a previously implanted single-lead VDDR pacemaker. Mass singularities in light quark correlators: the strange quark case

The correlators of light-quark currents contain mass-singularities of the form log(m^2/Q^2). It has been known for quite some time that these mass- logarithms can be absorbed into the vacuum expectation values of other operators of appropriate dimension, provided that schemes without normal- ordering are used. We discuss in detail this procedure for the case of the mass logarithms m^4 log(m^2/Q^2), including also the mixing with the other dimension-4 operators to two-loop order. As an application we present an improved QCD sum rule determination of the strange-quark mass. We obtain m_s(1 GeV)=171 \pm 15 MeV.

Abstract A laboratory experiment is described during which the uptake of HNO3 and HCl vapor by dendritic snow crystals and by single crystalline and polycrystalline small ice spheres was studied at ppbv and ppmv gas levels and at temperatures between 0 and −40°C. In one experimental investigation the vapor was allowed to be adsorbed onto the surface of the ice particles. During another experimental investigation the ice particles were allowed to grow from water vapor on fine fibers in the presence of the HNO3 and HCl vapor. Anti-GD3 antibodies are potent activators of human gamma/delta and alpha/beta positive T cells.

The ganglioside GD3 has a variety of biological functions. These include stimulatory effects on proliferation, natural killer activity and cytokine production by freshly isolated peripheral T cells. In this study we have characterized anti-GD3 antibody (MoAb Z21) mediated effects on T cell clones. Our data indicate that alpha/beta TCR CD4+ and CD8+ as well as gamma/delta TCR positive T cells can be stimulated resulting in proliferation and cytokine production. This effect could be blocked by cyclosporin A and did not involve the LFA-3 or CD4 molecule. The elaborated method is versatile. It enables to calculate parameters on the basis of the static characteristic or dynamic runs. Short range correlations in the weak decay of Lambda hypernuclei.

The differences found in the relativistic and nonrelativistic methods used in the literature to account for short range nuclear correlations in the decay of \ensuremath{\Lambda} hypernuclei are analyzed. By means of a schematic microscopic model for the origin of correlations, the appropriate method to include them in nuclear processes is derived and is found to be the same one used in the nonrelativistic approach. Summary Pulmonary air leaks are one of the most common problems in patients with the adult respiratory distress syndrome, ARDS. Abstract Fourier transform-ion cyclotron mass spectrometry has been applied to the study of highly charged ions produced and confined in an electron beam ion trap. Measurements of the relative ion abundance of hydrogenlike and bare krypton ions were made and compared to the abundance ratios determined with standard X-ray techniques. Good agreement was found establishing the reliability of the method as a new tool in highly charged ion research.

We calculate the total cross sections for different multiple transitions in photon absorption in a {sup 1}{ital S}{sub 0} {ital pp} pair embedded in a {sup 3}He nucleus. Employing two models, one involving only nucleon degrees of freedom, the other in addition the {Delta}(1232) isobar, we show that the {Delta} gives important effects even in transitions where the photon cannot couple directly to the isobar.

Structural selectivity provided by starburst dendrimers as pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography

Abstract Starburst dendrimers (SBDs) were used as a pseudostationary phase in electrokinetic chromatography (EKC) of hydrophobic compounds. The selectivity of SBD-mediated EKC (SBD-EKC) was different from those in micellar EKC (MEKC) systems, in spite of the apparent structural resemblance between micelles and SBDs. The SBDs provided similar selectivity as polymer gel packing materials in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC), showing little selectivity for alkyl groups and clear preference for aromatic compounds, especially for rigid, planar polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. We have characterized at the molecular level the zerknullt (zen) region of the Drosophila subobscura Antennapedia complex. The sequence comparison between D. subobscura and D. melanogaster shows an irregular distribution of the conserved and diverged regions, with the homeobox and a putative activating domain completely conserved. Comparisons of the promoter sequence and pattern of expression of the gene during development suggest that the regulation of zen has been conserved during evolution. The conservation of zen expression in a subpopulation of the polar cells indicates the existence of an important role in such cells. Breeding system and pollination of Nuphar luteum (L.) Smith (Nymphaeaceae) in Norway

Summary Insects visiting Nuphar luteum in southern Norway were caught and identified and their role as pollinators was evaluated by observations of their behaviour. Nuphar luteum is mainly pollinated by Apis mellifera and Bombus spp. Moreover syrphid flies are efficient pollinators. The chrysomelid beetle Donacia crassipes , although sometimes present, plays but a minor role as pollinator. By bagging and emasculating flowers the breeding system was shown to be one of mixed mating. Nuphar luteum is protogynous and primarily cross-pollinated, but because male and female stages overlap during the second day of flowering, and because it is self-compatible, self-fertilization is possible. Abstract Guided optical waves are very sensitive to the alteration of optical properties of dielectric media. In this report, we demonstrate the use of guided waves for studying dynamic behavior of ferroelectric liquid crystals. Propagating light in the anisotropic medium suffers a birefringent effect, which causes coupling of p- and s-polarized light. Theoretical calculations, based on the Maxwell equations, successfully describe this phenomena, using a dielectric tensor diagonal in molecular coordinates, which is transformed to the laboratory coordinate system by three Euler angles. The regioselective synthesis of isomeric 5(3)-aminomethyl-3(5)-phenyl isoxazoles using different methods is described. Spectroscopic data, especially mass spectrometric fragmentation, were used to identify and characterize the regioisomers. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are presented for the Fried-Binder model of block copolymer melts, where polymer chains are represented as self and mutually avoiding walks on a simple cubic lattice, and monomer units of different kind (A, B) repel each other if they are nearest neighbors (e AB > O). Sideward flow in Au + Au collisions at 400 A.MeV

Abstract We present new experimental data obtained with the FOPI detector at SIS, for the Au + Au heavy-ion collisions at 400 A MeV incident energy. The sideward flow, determined from a method without reaction-plane reconstruction, and the nuclear stopping are studied as a function of the centrality of the collisions. There are conflicting reports in the literature as to whether L-cysteine is an essential amino acid in premature infants as the result of the absence of hepatic cystathionase activity. To analyze the physiological importance of the cystathionase deficiency, we studied sulfur amino acid metabolism in human neonates of different gestational ages. Continuous polymer fractionation of poly(methyl vinyl ether) and a new Kuhn-Mark-Houwink relation

Continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) — a new large-scale method — was applied to the technical poly(methyl vinyl ether) (PVME) using toluence as solvent and petroleum ether as non-solvent. Two different devices served as fractionation apparatus, namely a column packed with glass beads and a set of mixer-settler extractors. Advantages and draw-backs of these devices are discussed. The experiments yielded numerous PVME fractions, varying in molar mass from 22 to 87 kg/mol and in molecular non-uniformity U = (M¯w/Mn) – 1 from 0,25 to 0,41 according to gel-permeation chromatography as compared with ca. Ecological, morphological and genetic characterization of sympatric Haemonchus spp. parasites of domestic ruminants in Mauritania

SUMMARYThe 4 species of ruminants (dromedary, zebu cattle, sheep and goat) in arid areas of Mauritania harboured Haemonchus spp. as the most frequent internal parasite. This was a rare situation where the 3 putative species, H. longistipes (dromedary), H. placet (zebu cattle) and H. contortus (sheep and goat) occurred sympatrically. The study was undertaken on hosts slaughtered at the Nouakchott abattoir, on the basis of monthly collection of worms. Two new cell lines from stomach cancers and one from a pancreatic carcinoma are presented. MZ-GC-1 was established from a hepatic metastasis of a well differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-2 was derived from ascites induced by a poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma. MZ-PC-1 originated from the pleural effusion of a moderately well differentiated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. MZ-GC-1 cells were adherent and partially polarized, connected tightly via desmosomes. In contrast MZ-GC-2 cells consisted of slightly adherent or floating subpopulations and displayed no desmosomes.
