Monoclonal antibodies FK1 and WF6 define two neighboring ligand binding sites on Torpedo acetylcholine receptor alpha-polypeptide.
1994
Previous studies have identified the sequence region flanking the invariant vicinal cysteinyl residues at positions 192 and 193 of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor alpha-subunit as containing major elements of the binding site for acetylcholine and its agonists and antagonists, including antibody WF6 (Conti-Tronconi, B. M., Diethelm, B. M., Wu, X., Tang, F., Bertazzon, T., Schroder, B., Reinhardt-Maelicke, A., and Maelicke, A. (1991) Biochemistry 30, 2575-2584). Recently we have shown that the sequence region flanking lysine alpha 125 contains elements of the binding site for physostigmine and related ligands, including antibody FK1 (Schrattenholz, A., Godovac-Zimmerman, J., Schafer, H.…
Moderne Bildverarbeitungsverfahren als Unterstützung der räumlichen Rekonstruktion histologischer Strukturen
1994
Summary Spatial reconstruction of anatomic and histologic structures is of increasing importance in biological and medical research. A special kind of disease — hereditary opalescent dentine (HOD) — offered a good chance for the use of a comfortable image-analysis system (IBAS, Kontron) in combination with a special software for three-dimensional reconstruction. New aspects of the morphologic organisation of a key structure of HOD — the giant dentinal canals — could be shown, thus supporting the hypothesis of a vasal origin.
Shear influence on the phase separation of oligomer blends
1994
Shear influences on the phase separation behaviour of four different blends of ethylene glycol/propylene glycol oligomers, exhibiting upper critical solution temperatures, were investigated. Cloud point curves at rest (turbidity measurements) are reported for all systems, spinodal conditions (light scattering) and tie-lines (analysis of the coexisting phases) are given for some examples. Phase diagrams under shear were obtained from rheological data. They demonstrate that the demixing temperatures of systems where both glycols bear OH end-groups are lowered up to ca. 1°C by shear rates of 1000s−1; the critical composition, generalized to the non-equilibrium conditions of flow, is markedly s…
13C NMR studies of dianions of unsaturated carboxylic acids
1994
Abstract 13C NMR Spectra of the dianions Li2-n resulting from double deprotonation of unsaturated carboxylic acids 1 to 6 by lithium dialkylamides, are examined. Higher field resonance for C2 than for C4 atoms are observed, which reveal higher elctron density at C2 than at C4, in agreement with the kinetic α-regioselectivity exhibited by these dianions on reaction with electrophiles.
Chlorophenanthrenes, alkylchlorophenanthrenes and alkylchloronaphthalenes in kraft pulp mill products and discharges
1994
Abstract Chlorinated phenanthrenes (PCPHs; P=1–5), alkylphenanthrenes (C4-PCPHs; P=1–3), dimethylnaphthalenes (C2-PCNs; P=1–4) and trimethylnaphthalenes (C3-PCNs; P=1–2) were analyzed by high resolution gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC/HRMS) in pulp, effluent and biosludge of two kraft pulp mills (mills 1 and 2). These compounds were indicated to be formed in the manufacture of both bleached hardwood and softwood kraft pulp. Different compound groups dominated in mill 1 samples compared to mill 2 samples. Differences between birch and pine pulp from mill 1 were observed for all substance groups but in mill 2 pulp only for PCPHs. The highest concentrations of PCPHs …
Defective T cell receptor/CD3 complex signaling in human type I diabetes
1994
The autoimmune process leading to the destruction of pancreatic β-cells is mediated by T lymphocytes. Peripheral T cells from subjects with preclinical and clinical type I diabetes respond weakly in vitro to lectin stimulation. We, therefore, investigated in a group of newly diagnosed diabetic patients the presence of a defect in the signal transduction pathway of the T cell receptor (TcR)/CD3 complex. Following stimulation with anti-CD3-coupled beads, the proliferative response in diabetic T cells was significantly decreased in comparison with that from normal T cells. Interestingly, addition of either recombinant interleukin (IL)-2 or phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate to the cell culture wa…

Metric regularity and second-order necessary optimality conditions for minimization problems under inclusion constraints
1994
In this paper, we establish some general metric regularity results for multivalued functions on Banach spaces. Then, we apply them to derive second-order necessary optimality conditions for the problem of minimizing a functionf on the solution set of an inclusion 0?F(x) withx?C, whenF has a closed convex second-order derivative.
Androgen receptors and hormone sensitivity of a human prostatic cancer cell line (PC-3) are modulated by natural beta-interferon.
1994
Androgen receptors are expressed at a low level in the cell line PC-3, which does not respond to either androgens or antiandrogens. If these cells are exposed to natural beta-interferon (beta-IFN) a reduction in cell growth and an increase in androgen receptors, evaluated by both biochemical and immunocytochemical techniques, occur. This increase seems not to be related to a selective block of PC-3 in any phase of the cell cycle. Pretreatment with beta-IFN determines in PC-3 cells a partial responsiveness to the androgen dihydrotestosterone as reflected by the increase in cell number. Moreover, the antiandrogen hydroxyflutamide shows agonistic properties by increasing the cell number of PC-…
Separation of theH2(e,e’p) structure functions up to 0.9 GeV/cmomentum transfer
1994
Longitudinal, transverse, and longitudinal-transverse structure functions for the $^{2}\mathrm{H}$(e,e'p) reaction have been determined. Measurements of the cross sections were made in-plane in nearly quasielastic kinematics spanning momentum transfers between 200 and 670 MeV/c and recoil momenta between 0 and 150 MeV/c. In addition, cross sections at momentum transfers above 800 MeV/c were measured at backward scattering angles in aligned kinematics where the response is predominantly transverse. We compared our data with both relativistic and nonrelativistic models. Our results are not consistently in agreement with any of the calculations based on these models. The disagreement between o…
Comparison of roxatidine and ranitidine in the treatment of refractory duodenal ulcer
1994
Abstract Fourteen patients with duodenal ulcer not healed after treatment with ranitidine at the standard dosage of 300 mg/day for 12 weeks were enrolled in the study. Eight patients were treated with roxatidine acetate, 150 mg/day, for 8 weeks (group A); six patients received treatment with ranitidine, 600 mg/day, for 8 weeks (group B). Efficacy of treatment was evaluated on the basis of reduction of ulcer pain, lowering of maximal acid output (MAO) levels, and cicatrization of ulcer lesion. The patients treated with roxatidine showed a significant reduction in MAO levels after 4 weeks, whereas the patients treated with ranitidine showed a significant reduction in MAO levels after 8 weeks.…
Non-linear oscillators under parametric and external poisson pulses
1994
The extended Ito calculus for non-normal excitations is applied in order to study the response behaviour of some non-linear oscillators subjected to Poisson pulses. The results obtained show that the non-normality of the input can strongly affect the response, so that, in general, it can not be neglected.
Novel path to apoptosis: small transmembrane pores created by staphylococcal alpha-toxin in T lymphocytes evoke internucleosomal DNA degradation.
1994
Peripheral-blood human T lymphocytes were treated with Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin. Membrane permeabilization was assessed by measuring efflux of K+ and Rb+ and influx of Na+, Ca2+, and propidium iodide. Cellular ATP and [3H]thymidine incorporation following lectin stimulation were measured as parameters for cell viability. Internucleosomal cleavage characteristic of programmed cell death was assessed by agarose gel electrophoresis and by quantifying low-molecular-weight, [3H]thymidine-labeled DNA fragments. Nanomolar concentrations of alpha-toxin evoked protracted, irreversible ATP depletion in both activated and resting T lymphocytes. Toxin-damaged cells also lost their ability to i…
A comparison theorem for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a domain in a Kaehler submanifold
1994
AbstractWe give a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on a domain of a complex submanifold of a Kaehler manifold with curvature bounded from above. The bound on the first eigenvalue is given as a function of the extrinsic outer radius and the bounds on the curvature, and it is attained only on geodesic spheres of a space of constant holomorphic sectional curvature embedded in the Kaehler manifold as a totally geodesic submanifold.
Changes in Levels of a-Tocopherol and Ascorbate in Spruce Needles at Three Low Mountain Sites Exposed to Mg2+-Deficiency and Ozone
1994
The main objective of this study was the com parison of changes in levels of α-tocopherol and ascorbate in needles of spruce trees with various degrees of damage at three low mountain sites. The ascorbate content in needles of spruce trees with various degrees of dam age differs in the course of seasons as well as in the absolute level. The antioxidant status was affected mainly during summer. The content of ascorbate in needles of dam aged trees was significantly increased compared to that of undamaged trees. Despite seasonal and daily fluctuations, the level of ascorbate seems to be a good indicator for the degree of dam age in the case of symptoms described as montane yellowing. Together…
Flavour-violating charged lepton decays in seesaw-type models
1994
Analytic expressions of lepton-flavour- and lepton-number-violating decays of charged leptons are derived in the context of general $SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$ seesaw scenarios that are motivated by grand unified theories (GUT's) or superstring models, in which left-handed and/or right-handed neutral singlets are present. Possible constraints imposed by cosmology and low-energy data are briefly discussed. The violation of the decoupling theorem in flavour-dependent graphs due to the presence of heavy neutral leptons of Dirac or Majorana nature is emphasized. Numerical estimates reveal that the decays $\tau^-\to e^-e^-e^+$ or $\tau^-\to e^-\mu^-\mu^+$ can be as large as $\sim 10^{-6}$, which may…

Pair and triple correlations in theA+B→Bdiffusion-controlled reaction
1994
An exact solution for the one-dimensional kinetics of the diffusion-controlled reaction A+B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}B is obtained by means of the three-particle correlation functions. Because of a lattice discreteness each site could be occupied by a single particle only which leads to the so-called ``bus effect'': Recombination of any particle A is defined by a spatial configuration of two nearest particles B only surrounding A from its left and right. This results in the unusual algebraic decay law, n(t)\ensuremath{\propto}${\mathit{t}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, which asymptotically (as t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}) does not depend on the trap B concentration.

Detection of intermediate mass Higgs bosons from spontaneously broken R-parity supersymmetry
1994
The Higgs sector in spontaneously broken R Parity supersymmetry (RPSUSY) shows interesting features that require new search techniques. Both the mass spectrum and production rates may differ from the standard model and minimal supersymmetric model (MSSM) expectations. For some parameter choices, the dominant Higgs boson decay mode can even be invisible, leading to events with large missing transverse momentum carried by superweakly interacting majorons. We study the reaction $pp \ra Z + H + X$, and find that it canlead to detectable events at LHC/SSC for a large region of parameter space.

Higher Order Action for the Interaction of the String with the Dilaton
1994
The theory of the string in interaction with a dilaton background field is analyzed. In the action considered, the metric in the world sheet of the string is the induced metric, and the theory presents second order time derivatives. The canonical formalism is developed and it is showed that first and second class constraints appear. The degrees of freedoom are the same than for the free bosonic string. The light cone gauge is used to reduce to the physical modes and to compute the physical hamiltonian.
Photoluminescence in silicon-doped n-indium selenide
1994
Photoluminescence results on silicon-doped indium selenide are reported. The effect of temperature and excitation intensity is studied. At low temperature, free and neutral donor bound exciton peaks are observed. Above 100 K only free exciton and band-to-band photoluminescence is detected. In order to give account of the full lineshape as a function of the absorption coefficient, the Urbach absorption tail of InSe is measured. Transmission and reflection photoluminescence spectra are also compared in order to study the effect of carrier diffusion. The shape of the photoluminescence spectrum can be accounted for through a direct gap model.
Age-related changes in antioxidant defence mechanisms and peroxidation in isolated hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats
1994
International audience; The effects of age and hypertension on the antioxidant defence systems and the lipid peroxidation in rat isolated hepatocytes were studied. Four different age groups (1, 3, 6 and 12 months) were considered in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Age-associated changes were observed on vitamin E status, glutathione (GSH) level, MDA formation and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in both strains. Maximal levels or activities of these parameters were found at 3 and 6 months, except for MDA which was low at 3 months. Then, a fall was observed at 12-month-old compared to 6-month values. In addition, GSH-Px activity was sig…
Configuration-interaction calculations of jellium clusters by the nuclear shell model
1994
Configuration-interaction (CI) calculations are performed on Na clusters of up to 20 atoms within the spherical jellium model, with particular attention paid to the magic clusters with N=2, 8, and 20. The interacting valence electrons are assumed to move in the Coulomb field of the jellium core. The numerical work is carried out by the nuclear-structure code oxbash modified to handle LS coupling. The many-particle bases are constructed of harmonic-oscillator single-particle states extending over 11 major shells and, alternatively, of single-particle states generated by the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA). The calculated quantities include ground- and excited state energies, ionizati…

Phase space coordinates and the Hamiltonian constraint of Regge calculus.
1994
We suggest that the phase space of Regge calculus is spanned by the areas and the deficit angles corresponding to the two-simplexes on the spacelike hypersurface of simplicial spacetime. Our proposal is based on a slight modification of the Ashtekar formulation of canonical gravity. In terms of these phase space coordinates we write an equation which we suggest to be a simplicial version of the Hamiltonian constraint of canonical gravity.

Space-charge relaxation in perovskites.
1994
We report a dielectric anomaly in several perovskites at intermediate frequencies 10\ensuremath{\le}f\ensuremath{\le}${10}^{7}$ Hz in the temperature range 400 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C \ensuremath{\le}T\ensuremath{\le}800 \ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C. We have found this dielectric maximum in more than 100 samples of various shapes and textures. This anomaly is shown to arise from a Debye dielectric dispersion that slows down following an Arrhenius law. We have established a link between this dielectric relaxation and the conductivity. We propose that it can be achieved through a space-charge model that quantitatively agrees with the experimental results in the lower temp…
Calculation of size‐intensive transition moments from the coupled cluster singles and doubles linear response function
1994
Coupled cluster singles and doubles linear response (CCLR) calculations have been carried out for excitation energies and dipole transition strengths for the lowest excitations in LiH, CH+, and C4and the results compared with the results from a CI-like approach to equation of motion coupled cluster (EOMCC). The transition strengths are similar in the two approaches for single molecule calculations on small systems. However, the CCLR approach gives size-intensive dipole transition strengths, while title EOMCC formalism does not. Thus, EOMCC calculations can give unphysically dipole transition strengths, e.g., in EOMCC calculations on a sequence of noninteracting LiH systems we obtained a neg…

A relativistic approach to gravitational instability in the expanding Universe: second-order Lagrangian solutions
1994
A Lagrangian relativistic approach to the non--linear dynamics of cosmological perturbations of an irrotational collisionless fluid is considered. Solutions are given at second order in perturbation theory for the relevant fluid and geometric quantities and compared with the corresponding ones in the Newtonian approximation. Specifically, we compute the density, the volume expansion scalar, the shear, the ``electric" part, or tide, and the ``magnetic" part of the Weyl tensor. The evolution of the shear and the tide beyond the linear regime strongly depends on the ratio of the characteristic size of the perturbation to the cosmological horizon distance. For perturbations on sub--horizon scal…

The function of neuromuscular system in maximal stretch-shortening cycle exercises: Comparison between power- and endurance-trained athletes.
1994
Abstract Differences in neuromuscular function between power athletes ( n = 10) and endurance athletes ( n = 10) were investigated in six different experimental conditions. In drop jumps and in stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercises on the sledge (sledge jumps), the subjects performed about 10 maximal jumps from the optimum dropping height (O) as well as from the dropping height of optimum −40 cm (O − 40) and optimum +40 cm (O + 40). The five to six best jumps were taken for further analysis. In every condition the power group had better physical performance compared to their endurance counterparts. During the pre-activity, the rate of electromyographic (EMG) development of the power athl…
