Regional glucose uptake and protein synthesis in isolated perfused rat hearts immediately after training and later

The effect of 10 weeks of running training and termination of training on the regional distribution of cardiac glucose uptake and protein synthesis were studied in isolated perfused hearts in male rats. The left ventricular glucose uptake in hearts from sedentary rats was 1.87 +/- 0.14 mumol/min per g protein (mean +/- SE), being about 30% higher in the subendocardial than in the subepicardial layer (p less than 0.05). The gradient of left ventricular glucose uptake was similar to the controls in the rats retired from training, but was absent in the trained animals. Congenital intracranial tumors

Tumors that are diagnosed already at birth or during the first or second week of life are called congenital tumors. They represent a special challenge to pediatric oncologists and to surgeons, and are relatively rare. From 1956 to August 1983 in the Pediatric Department of the University Hospital of Mainz, 1.027 children with tumors were observed and treated, 16 of them with congenital tumors. Among 479 tumor patients from 1956 to 1972 there was only one child with a congenital tumor; but from 1973 to 1983 there were 15 cases. Possibly, the absolute number of congenital tumors is increasing!

Reliability and Accuracy of Echocardiography for Follow-up Studies after Intervention

By two-dimensional echocardiography limitations of M-mode echocardiography have been eliminated. As a direct and noninvasive method two-dimensional echocardiography seems to be an ideal method for analysis of left ventricular function in follow-up studies. In relation to other methods there are no limitations concerning x-ray exposure, physicians and patients safety. Before different studies can be discussed, reliability and accuracy of two-dimensional echocardiography have to be evaluated. Beat-to-beat, day-to-day, intra- and interobserver variability will be discussed, followed by description of follow-up studies after intervention.

Detection of hepatitis B virus markers in sera of asymptomatic hepatitis B surface antigen carriers with special emphasis to pre-S-encoded proteins.

Sera of asymptomatic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers were analyzed for the presence of pre-S-encoded proteins. Four individuals with biopsy-proven chronic hepatitis uniformly expressed pre-S1- and pre-S2-encoded proteins. Individuals who had histologically normal or largely normal livers were heterogeneous with respect to expression of pre-S-encoded proteins. This heterogeneous expression of pre-S-encoded proteins occurred most likely due to difference in serum HBsAg concentration. Alternatively differences in pre-S gene expression need to be considered. Clinically the study indicates that expression of pre-S domains in serum is unrelated to viremia or chronic liver disease.

Biometric variation in three strains of Brachionus plicatilis as a direct response to abiotic variables

Morphometric variation in three clones of Brachionus plicatilis cultured at 20°C, 25°C and 30°C, and 9‰, 12‰ and 24‰ salinity was analysed. Size appeared to be largely under genetic control and this defined the narrow limits within which variation due to abiotic factors could occur. Temperature had a significant effect on size, but affected the three clones differently. The most general effect of temperature was a reduction in size which levelled off as the temperature rose. Of the measurements taken, only distance between the median spines was affected by salinity. An important inter-relationship between the effects of temperature and salinity was also detected.

Diese Art von Rhythmusstorungen werden Reperfusionsarrhythmien genannt. Seitdem die intrakoronare und intravenose Streptokinaseapplikation bei Patienten mit frischem Herzinfarkt immer haufiger verabreicht werden, ist auch das Interesse fur die Reperfusionsarrhythmien gestiegen.

Formation of Ordered Structures in Quenching Experiments: Scaling Theory and Simulations

In this note we want to address the particular problem of the formation of ordered structures resulting from “quenching experiments”. The generic experimental situation is depicted in Figure 1. Initially the system is in an unordered random state in the one-phase region. Then the temperature is lowered (for some systems like polymers the coexistence curve is inverted so that the temperature must be raised) until the system is in the two phase region. The system is now in a non-equilibrium situation and evolves toward equilibrium. It is during the evolution toward equilibrium that the system develops ordered structures /1,2/.

Composite membranes of aromatic-polyamide for desalination: Membrane preparation and characterization.

A new reverse osmosis composite membrane composed of the following aromatic polymer was estudied. Composite membranes were successfully prepared from PTDS by the conventional phase-inversion method. A typical example of the basic membrane performances is as follows; water flux, 440 1/m2 day and salt rejection, 97.7% determined under the pressure of 40 atm., using 0.1% NaCl solution at 25 °C. The PTDS membrane was characterized by its excellent chemical and thermal resistances, especially against acid, alkali and oxidative atmospheres. These features suggest that the PTDS membrane is a promising candidate for water desalination.

Gamma-Interferon Regulates Secretion of G-CSF in Human Monocytes on the Transcriptional Level

The production of colony stimulating factors (CSF) for granulocytes and monocytes is integrated into a network of communicating soluble messenger molecules resulting from T-cell/monocyte interactions. We assessed the capactiy of gamma-Interferon to modulate monocyte secretion of CSF by colony assays and Northern blot analysis to hybridize monocyte RNA with cDNA probes of different CSF-types. Whereas mRNA for GM-CSF was undetectable in untreated and gamma-IFN treated peripheral blood monocytes, the constitutive expression of mRNA for G-CSF and subsequent production of a CSF with biological activities similar to G-CSF could highly be enhanced by exposure of monocytes to gamma-IFN.

Hyperthermia as a modality for the treatment of malignant tumors, either alone or in combination with radiation or anticancer drugs, is rapidly becoming a clinical reality. Three different mechanisms of action have provided the rationale for considering the use of hyperthermia as an antitumor agent. At moderate hyperthermia (T=40˚ -42.5˚ C), heat can increase cell killing in a synergistic way following exposure of a tumor to ionizing radiation. This radiosensitization is probably based on, among other things, the inhibited repair of radiation-induced DNA lesions. The cationic phthalocyanin-like dye Cuprolinic Blue, unlike phthalocyanin dyes such as Alcian Blue or Astra Blue, can definitely exhibit a clear metachromatic reaction with appropriate substrates. The application of Cuprolinic Blue to epoxy-embedded semithin sections revealed that mast cell cytoplasmic granules, goblet cell mucin and cartilage matrix stained in violet shades (metachromatic), whereas nuclear chromatin presented a bright blue coloration (orthochromatic).
