Abstract Addition of the lithium dienolate derived from crotonic acid to monosubstituted cyclohexanones occurs through the α and γ carbon atoms of the dienolate in the cold and on heating, respectively. For any regioselectivity, equatorial approach is found under kinetic conditions, but equilibration favours products from axial attack and selectivity may be inverted.

The present immunohistochemical study demonstrates the multiplicity, histotopography and origin of peptidergic innervation in the mammalian heart. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is the major representative of peptides in cardiac sympathetic efferents. Sympathetic afferents are characterized by the presence of tachykinins, calcitonin gene-related peptide and apparently also some opioid peptides. Predominant peptides of the vagal system are tachykinins. The intrinsic peptidergic system predominantly consists of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide/peptide histidine isoleucine. Postprocessing of a Finite Element Scheme with Linear Elements

In this contribution we first give a brief survey of postprocessing techniques for accelerating the convergence of finite element schemes for elliptic problems. We also generalize a local superconvergence technique recently analyzed by Křižek and Neittaanmaki ([20]) to a global technique. Finally, we show that it is possible to obtain O(h4) accuracy for the gradient in some cases when only linear elements are used. Numerical tests are presented.

Sludge and stones in gallbladder after pregnancy

Summary The prevalence of sludge and stones in the gallbladder of 298 women in the immediate post-partum period was ultrasonographically assessed. We have investigated some risk factors for the development of sludge or stones in these patients and followed up most of these patients by ultrasonography to detect the presence of sludge and/or stones in the year following their discovery. We found sludge in 80 (26.2%) and gallstones in 16 (5.2%) of these patients. Age, obesity and months of oral contraceptive use were risk factors only for the presence of gallstones. Timm-staining intensity is correlated with the density of Timm-positive presynaptic structures in the cerebral cortex of lizards

In cortical areas of the lizard, Podarcis hispanica, Timm staining reveals a distinct pattern of lamination. At the electron-microscope level, virtually all of the reaction product is located in the synaptic vesicles of Timm-positive boutons. Using linear-regression analysis, the area density of Timm-positive bouton profiles as well as the numerical and volume density of stained vesicles were found to be closely correlated with the light-microscopic densitometric values obtained for each Timm-positive cortical zone. We discuss the possibility of estimating stereological electron-microscopic data parameters from densitometric measurements at the light-microscope level.

Eine Adenokarzinomzellinie, Mz-ChA-2, konnte kurzlich aus einem primaren Gallenblasenkarzinom, das lokal in die Leber eingewachsen war, in Gewebekultur etabliert werden (1). Zyto- und Histomorphologie dieser Tumorzellinie in vitro und nach Transplantation auf Nacktmause entsprechen dem Primartumor der 65jahrigen Patientin. Im Serum wurden leicht erhohte AFP-Werte bestimmt, wahrend die CEA-Werte normal waren. Im Gewebekulturuberstand dieser neuen Tumorzellinie MZ-ChA-2 konnte AFP nachgewiesen werden. Abstract A simple, novel method is proposed for the accurate determination of the relative quantum yields of each of the interconverting conformational species of the autoassociating polypeptide gramicidin A in organic solution. The method is based on fitting the experimental results obtained independently from fluorescence emission spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography. The fluorescence parameters obtained are discussed in terms of the structural features of the individual conformational species. The advantages of this approach and its possible application to other different organic solvents or to other autoassociating polypeptides are also considered.
