Egg and embryo proteins in European newts (genus Triturus) and their taxonomic potential

AbstractPolyacrylamide disc electrophoresis was carried out on water soluble proteins of eggs and embryos of Triturus alpestris, T. boscai, T. cristatus, T. helveticus, T. marmoratus and T. vulgaris. "Major bands" and "minor bands" were defined and species specific phenotyps are described. The patterns of major bands proved to be rather constant during embryonic development up to approximately stage 30 (stretched tailbud stage). The method as used in this study is considered to be practical and relevant for diagnostic studies on Triturus species.

Urolithiasis Following Portacaval Shunt in Rats

A reliable technique for a portacaval anastomosis (PCA) in rats was first published by Lee and Fisher 1961. Since then the biological and biochemical consequences have been studied extensively in numerous investigations. The occurrence of a urolithiasis following PCA was first reported by Herz et al. 1972. Disturbances of uric acid metabolism that were caused by the shunt were thought to be responsible. They should lead to an increased production of endogenous uric acid and thus to hyperuricosuria. Investigations that were published since then mainly focused on chemical stone analysis (Bichler et al. 1974; Rasenack et al. 1977; Wallace et al. 1984).

Effects of Citrus Exocortis Viroid Infection on the Peroxidase/IAA-Oxidase System of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycoperszcon esculentum

Summary The peroxidase/indoleacetic acid (IAA) oxidase system of plants of Gynura aurantiaca and Lycopersicon esculentum healthy and infected by citrus exocortis viroid (CEV) was studied. In these hosts, the infection induced an increase of both enzymic activities, when they were measured between 40 and 50 d post inoculation. The analysis of isozyme composition by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and specific staining of peroxidase revealed an intensification of most of the zymogram bands as well as the premature appearance of one of the isozymes in the two plants investigated. Skin and lymphocytes of three patients with early juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) were ultras trueturally investigated. Fingerprint profiles (FPP), isolated and I or mixed with curvilinear profiles (CLP), in various dermal cells and large, usually single lipopigments delineated by a trilaminar membrane and filled with a granular matrix, FPP and occasionally lipid droplets in lymphocytes were observed in all three patients. Characteristic lipopigments in lymphocytes are an important feature to differentiate between early juvenile NCL and late infantile and juvenile NCL.

When individuals of Drosophila subobscura at 0 hr prepupa are submitted to anoxia (4 hr and 24 hr, respectively), their puffing pattern is very similar to that shown by individuals at the moment of development in which treatment began. The same expression of genes (the same puffing pattern and the same protein pattern) is induced in this species by recovery from anoxia as well as by heat shock treatment at 31 degrees C.

Kinetics of Group Transfer Polymerization

The group transfer polymerization (GTP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and tert.-butyl methacrylate (TBMA), catalyzed by bifluoride, is of first order with respect to monomer and catalyst concentrations. A slightly negative order with respect to initiator concentration is observed, indicating an inhibitive function of the initiator. Termination reactions occur at lower catalyst concentrations. They are very pronounced for TBMA and result in incomplete conversions. Electron microscopic observation of tonsillar tissue as a diagnostic aid in early juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.

An electron microscopic observation in a tonsil of a patient with early juvenile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis (NCL) demonstrated characteristic lipopigments in lymphocytes, i.e., fingerprint profiles (FPP) and granular matrixes. While numerous FPP, curvilinear profiles (CLP) and granular matrixes were found in reticulo-endothelial and plasma cells, tonsillar lymphocytes contained only FPP and granular matrixes as seen in circulating lymphocytes. These findings suggest that a tonsil biopsy, an easy and simple technique, may provide more reliable information than a skin biopsy not only for the diagnosis of but also for differentiating the clinical forms of childhood NCL.

The introduction of an intervening airgap in a circular surface waveguide is investigated. The radial field structure and the propagation characteristics of the two fundamental modes are shown, as well as their dependence on the airgap and the frequency. The thickness of the airgap is a new parameter that might be used to improve the propagation characteristics of the surface waveguide as a low-loss transmission line, or to control the penetration of the fields in the surrounding medium, allowing a design of the waveguide as a leaky transmission line.

Isolated rat NILs were incubated in Krebs-HEPES solution. The release of dopamine and its metabolites (DOPAC, HVA and MOPET) was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. The spontaneous release of the sum of metabolites was about 40 times that of dopamine. The spontaneous outflow of dopamine metabolites was unaffected after inhibition of dopamine uptake (by GBR 12921) or after pretreatment with reserpine (5 mg/kg, 12 h before the experiments), but it was reduced by 50% after preincubation with the irreversible DOPA decarboxylase inhibitor, (MFMD, 10 microM, for 10 min). Recent measurements of positrons in coincidence with electrons emitted in U+Th collisions near the Coulomb barrier show sharp line structures in the sum and difference energy spectra of the two leptons (ref. 1). A possible method to clarify the origin of these lines is to study the angular correlation of the leptons. In this short contribution we want to report on a positron-electron coincidence test measurement performed with the TORI spectrometer. This apparatus offers the possibility to measure positrons in coincidence with electrons emitted into the same and opposite hemisphere as well.

The occurrence of oligochaetes in lake chains receiving pulp mill waste and their relation to eutrophication on the trophic scale

Earlier conceptions of oligochaetes as indicators of trophy were somewhat enlarged to include more littoral, meiofaunal and naidid species. The amplitudes of different species on the oligotrophy-eutrophy axis seem to be generally large. Certain species which probably originally occur mainly in very humic environments seem also to be able to endure very strong organic loading caused by pulp mills. John Hicks‘ Rezension von Keynes’ „The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money„ erschien 1937 in der Zeitschrift Econometrica unter dem Titel: „Mr. Keynes and the ‘Classics’: A suggested interpretation“. In den herkommlichen Makroanalysen wird uber die Auswirkungen der Staatsausgaben auf die Mikroeinheiten keine Aussage gemacht. Die Staatsausgaben sind weder in der Produktionsfunktion noch in der Nutzenfunktion verankert. So werden — mikrookonomisch gesehen — nutzlose Staatsausgaben getatigt. Sie erhohen weder das Humankapital noch die Effizienz des privaten Kapitalbestandes. Auch scheinen die Staatsausgaben keinen Einflus auf die Wohlfahrt einzelner Individuen zu haben.1 Es ist aber fraglich, ob die Wirtschaftssubjekte die Hohe der Staatsausgaben nicht in ihr privates Optimalkalkul aufnehmen.
