Methodology and significance of the detection of liver-kidney-microsomal (lkm) autoantibodies in autoimmune-type chronic active hepatitis

1987

Liver-kidney-microsomal (LKM) autoantibodies are diagnostic markers for a subgroup of HBsAg-negative chronic active hepatitis, presumably owing to autoimmunity. They were originally detected by indirect immunofluorescence and can now be evaluated by radioimmunoassay, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and immunoblotting. In immunoblotting LKM-positive sera react strongly with a 50-kilodalton (KD) polypeptide band of microsomes. In immunoelectron microscopy, LKM-positive sera show a binding with membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum. The LKM antigen was further identified on various isoenzymes of cytochrome P-450. Immunofluorescence is still the method of choice for screening sera routinely…

Pleomorphic Adenoma and Adenoid-Cystic Carcinoma of the Salivary Glands: Comparative Immunohistochemical Patterns

1987

A series of 20 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and 19 cases of adenoid-cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands, and one case in the mammary location, were investigated regarding immunohistochemical reactivity for Tissue Polypeptid Antigen (TPA), Pre-Keratins, Vimentin, S-100 Protein, and their arrangement pattern of fibronectin. As a whole, the results support the hypothesis of morpho-structural and mainly, onto-histogenetic similarities between these tumours, but they also underline the need for great care in outlining their morpho-functional features, in relation to their different prognoses.

Methomyl analogues with increased biological activity towards F7T maize mitochondria

1987

Abstract Methomyl analogues were synthesized by substituting alkyl moieties (C 2 -C 21 ) in the place of the carbamic methyl. They were assayed on mitochondria isolated from male sterile (F 7 T) and male fertile (F 7 N) maize. They had no action on F 7 N mitochondria. The heptadecyl (C 17 ) and heneicosanyl (C 21 ) derivatives had no conspicuous effect on F 7 T mitochondria. By contrast, the ethyl, propyl, butyl, nonyl, tridecyl (C 13 ) and pentadecyl (C 15 ) derivatives had the same type of activity as Methomyl on F 7 T mitochondria, namely stimulation of NADH oxidation and inhibition of malate oxidation. Moreover, the concentration at which they were maximally effective decreased from 10 …

Abnormal Marker Expression in Acute Leukemia (AL) Characterized by Monoclonal Antibodies and Flow Cytometry

1987

The application of refined immunologic and enzymatic markers to conventional morphologic and cytochemical techniques has revealed an unexpected heterogeneitiy in acute leukemia (AL). Since the development of monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) to lineage specific differentiation markers, there have been several reports of AL patients whose blast cells represent relatively homogeneous populations with phenotypic features of more than one cell line [1–5] or are characterized by the coexistence of separate cell populations each demonstrating either lymphoid or myeloid features [6–10].

Physiologie und Pathophysiologie des Hungerstoffwechsels

1987

Distribution of Brachionus species in Spanish mediterranean wetlands

1987

In this study 200 zooplankton samples were Burjassotcollected (1979–1980), from 57 different wetlands in coastal Mediterranean Spain (CMS) and examined for the occurrence of Brachionus species. Data on 17 separate physical and chemical features of these water bodies were obtained from samples collected at the same time. Ten different Brachionus species were found in these wetlands, but only six occurred frequently enough to allow further examination of their distributional patterns using multivariate discriminant analysis. To separate these species, three analyses were performed using the 17 physical and chemical parameters, or their ratios. Three discriminant functions accounted for 80% or…

DECENTRALISATION AS AN INCENTIVE SCHEME

1987

Recent changes have introduced more decentralization in a number of traditionally centralized countries.1 In the case of France, it is sometimes claimed that the 1982-1983 reform of subcentral government is of historical importance. Although the principles of that reform are not contested any more by the new majority elected in 1986, opinions still differ on a number of policy issues. Some of the issues are presented in this introductory section. But the main purpose of this paper is not to expose or discuss in detail the problems of decentralization in France. As argued in the second part of the introductory section, the theoretical framework in which the policy issues of decentralization …

Leukemic Colony-Forming Cells in Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia: Maturation Hierarchy and Growth Conditions

1987

Despite their primitive morphological appearance, the majority of leukemic blasts in acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) are end-stage, nonproliferating cells. Only a small subset of AML blasts are capable of a sufficient number of divisions to form colonies in semisolid medium [1, 2]. It has been suggested that these leukemic colony-forming cells (L-CFC) may act in vivo as progenitor cells to maintain the rest of the leukemic cell population [3, 4]. L-CFC share several properties with normal myeloid progenitor cells, including self-renewal potential and high thymidine suicide index [2, 3]. As in the case of normal myeloid progenitor cells (NMPC), colony growth of L-CFC from most patients req…

Cylindrical surface waveguide modes using a surface impedance dyadic method

1987

The fields and characteristic parameters of nonradiating modes of a dielectric-coated wire with an intervening airgap are derived using a surface impedance dyadic method. This method shows several advantages and provides a straightforward method for working out the characteristic equation, cutoff conditions, far-from-cutoff conditions and field coefficients. Important results about the hybrid nature of these modes are shown, and some of them are common to any cylindrical surface waveguide.

Kalendarze wydawane w oficynie Bronisława Koraszewskiego

1987

The outline presented here is devoted in its main part to the analysis of the „Gazeta Opolska” calendars which were published in Opole in the years 1896, 1898, 1900—1914. Besides the first issue, they were called only once Opolanin (in 1898) and since 1900 consequently Staropolanin. The authoress has placed them among the context of the Upper-Silesian people’s book calendars. She discussed their basic determinants, among others: volume, edition, price, editorial get-up and, first of all, their thematic and specific content as well as the tasks which they were to fulfil. Their main task was to give the readers a general knowledge and a knowledge of the Polish nation aiming at awaking patriot…

Primary gastrointestinal involvement in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

1987

This paper reviews primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (GI-NHL). Every aspect of the topic is discussed though special attention is paid to histopathology and instrumental diagnosis as essential factors to stage the lymphoma and to determine an adequate therapy. Data from the most important works on the subject together with the results of our recent study of 40 primary GI-NHL are reported. Diverse findings by various authors are intentionally compared in a manner to present the work to the reader in the most critical way while trying to give an objective explanation of the different results on the basis of our own experience.

Glutathione metabolism under the influence of hydroperoxides in the lactating mammary gland of the rat. Effect of glucose and extracellular ATP.

1987

Tert-butyl hydroperoxide decreases GSH and total free glutathione (GSH+2GSSG) contents of acini from lactating mammary glands. The decrease in total free glutathione can be explained by an increase in mixed disulfide formation and by excretion of GSS G to the extracellular medium, and subsequent degradation catalyzed by gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. Low concentrations of glucose prevented the changes in glutathione levels induced by the peroxide. In the presence of extracellular ATP, glucose did not prevent these changes. However, incubations with the peroxide, did not alter the rate of other metabolic pathways by acini.

Modulation of melanoma-associated antigens by monoclonal antibodies as visualized by radioimmunoelectron microscopy and radioantibody binding assay

1987

There is a wealth of information about monoclonal antibody (MAb) specificity and function on fixed tissues, yet little is known about formation and release of antigen-antibody complexes and their functional behavior in vivo. We analyzed the pathway of radiolabeled MAbs directed against melanoma-associated antigens by radioimmunoelectron microscopy (RIEM) on metabolically active cells of the melanoma cell lines SK-MEL-28, MeWo and Colo 38 at different time intervals. In parallel, binding and release of MAbs were investigated by the radioantibody binding assay (RBA). Both procedures gave essentially concordant results. Preferentially stable binding of immune complexes (ICs) to the cell surfac…

Magneto-Structural Correlations in μ-Halo Bridged Copper(II) Chains

1987

To design synthetic pathways to systems of desired properties is a growing challenge for inorganic chemist. Our current interest in this area is focused on copper(II) chemistry. Besides to advance in the understanding of the factors determining the conformation around copper(II) in the solid state, we intend to gain insight into the chemical and structural effects that govern exchange coupling interactions in condensed species. In this context, we have approached the synthesis and characterization of a wide set of pentacoordinated Cu(LIII)XY complexes (LIII=tridentate ligand, X=coordinating anion, Y=coordinating or non-coordinating anion) showing a great structural diversity (including mono…

Die Notwendigkeit Einer Neutralen Geldpolitik

1987

A New Sensitive Technique for Laser Spectroscopic Studies of Radioactive Rare-Gas Isotopes

1987

The concept of laser ionization has been widely used in spectroscopy studies and for the detection of minute samples of atoms. Being based on ion counting, it avoids the sensitivity problems of conventional fluorescence spectroscopy, which are due to low detection efficiency and large background from scattered laser light. We report the first application of an alternative ionization scheme which we have developed for collinear laser spectroscopy on fast atomic beams /1/. Here the increase in sensitivity has considerably enlarged the range of isotopes very far from stability, for which nuclear moments and radii can be investigated in hyperfine structure and isotope shift measurements.
