l-[3H]lysine binding to rat retinal membrane: II. effect of kainic acid,d,l-?-aminoadipic acid, iodoacetic acid, and modification by dark-exposure

1986

The rat retina and the different brain regions contain membranes sites that bindl-lysine in the nanomolar range. These binding sites undergo changes in different experimental conditions, thus: I) intraocular injection of kainic acid induces a reduction of the density ofl-lysine binding sites, II)d,l-α-aminoadipic acid injected into the eye enhances both kinetic parameters (Bmax andKd) ofl-[3H]lysine binding sites, III) the intraperitoneal injection of iodoacetic acid decreases the sensitivity for its ligand binding sites, and IV) the exposure to darkness of the rats reducesl-[3H]lysine binding in the retina, thalamus, hypothalamus and superior colliculus, but not in the occipital cortex; su…

Mössbauer Spectroscopic Evidence of Angle-Dependent Intersystem Crossing in LiNbO3:Fe3+

1986

M\"ossbauer emission spectra of LiNb${\mathrm{O}}_{3}$:$^{57}\mathrm{Co}$ single crystals in magnetic fields up to 5 T at 4.2 K show initial populations of the $^{6}A_{1\mathrm{g}}$ Zeeman substates of ${\mathrm{Fe}}^{3+}$ which depend strongly on the angle between the crystallographic $c$ axis and the magnetic field. This is interpreted in terms of a crystal-field effect on excited states which influences the initial populations of the Zeeman sublevels of the $^{6}A_{1\mathrm{g}}$ ground term after the electron-capture decay of $^{57}\mathrm{Co}$. An intersystem crossing process due to orbit-lattice interaction can fairly well explain the angular dependence.

Subshell closure effects on the collectivity of 36 88 Kr52 and the beta decay of88Br to levels in88Kr

1986

The level structure of88Kr has been investigated by measurements on chemically separated bromine samples. A total of 146γ-rays have been assigned to the decay of88Br, and a level scheme with 58 levels is proposed. The collectivity of88Kr has been investigated within the framework of the Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA-2 model). Comparison of our detailedγ-ray data and calculations have led to the establishment of a protonhole boson desciption rather than protonparticle nature. This supports recent works establishingZ=40 as a major subshell closure.

Intravesical bleomycin in bladder tumour prophylaxis.

1986

The authors have evaluated the efficacy, tolerability and systemic absorption of bleomycin administered by intravesical route in the prophylaxis of recurrences of superficial vesical tumours after endoscopic resection (TUR). Thirty mg of bleomycin dissolved in 30 ml of saline solution were instilled in the bladder once a week for the first month and then once a month for 12 months. The instilled fluid was held in the bladder for 1 hour. The systemic absorption of the drug was evaluated by a microbiological assay of bleomycin in plasma and in the perfusion liquid recovered from the bladder. Fifteen patients were treated; most had a long history of multiple recurrent tumours despite previous …

Ovarian tissue in juvenile palaeacanthocephalans: Corynosoma semerme, C. strumosum and Echinorhynchus gadi

1986

SUMMARYThe structure of the ovarian tissue in juvenile Corynosoma semerme and C. strumosum from a fish paratenic host and in the cystacanth stage of Echinorhynchus gadi from an amphipod intermediate host was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy. The species were obtained from hosts living in the Baltic Sea. The observations indicate that ovarian development was more advanced in cystacanths of E. gadi than in juveniles of C. semerme and C. strumosum. Free ovaries were present in E. gadi with an obvious supporting syncytium and surface microvilli. The biological significance of the different stages of ovarian development in these species is discussed briefly in relation t…

Organoelement derivatives of steroids: synthesis and structural characterization of diorganotin chloride adducts of hormones

1986

Abstract Ten new diorganotin dichloride adducts of hormones of the type R 2 SnCl 2 ·2L [where R = Me, Et, n-Bu, Oct and Ph; L = 4-androsten-17s-ol-3-one ( A ); 5-androsten-3s-ol-17-one ( B ); 4-androsten-17α- methyl-17s-ol-3-one ( C ) and 3,17-dihydroxy-5- pregnene-20-one ( D )] have been prepared and characterized at 297 K and 223 K. Spectroscopic measurements (IR; Raman; 1 H, 13 C, 119 Sn NMR) suggest the dissociation or fast ligand exchange in solution at 297 K. Hexa-coordinated adducts with bonding through carbonyl oxygen and trans -R groups in octahedral geometry are formulated at 223 K.

l-[3H]lysine binding to rat retinal membrane: I. Quantitative determination and characterization of the binding sites

1986

A saturable reversible binding to membranes from rat retina has been found for L-[3H]lysine. Specific binding is time, temperature and protein concentration-dependent, and shows stereospecificity. The best computer fits of the experimental data are obtained with a receptor model based on two independent binding sites, of which only one site with a Kd value of 229.4 +/- 14.23 nM and a Bmax of 2.04 +/- 0.11 pmol/mg protein could be characterized satisfactorily. Several compounds included putative neurotransmitters have moderate or no affinity for L-lysine binding sites. A different pattern of distribution of L-[3H]lysine binding sites is observed among various regions of the brain, with the h…

The third book of theBella Parisiacae Urbisby Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés and its Old English gloss

1986

A certain ‘Descidia Parisiace polis’, which can safely be identified with the work of Abbo of Saint-Germain-des-Prés now commonly known as theBella Parisiacae Urbis, is listed among the books given by Æthelwold to the monastery of Peterborough. We shall never know if Æthelwold's gift corresponds to any of the surviving manuscripts of Abbo's poem – though probably it does not – but the inventory gives evidence of the popularity of his work in England. In the following pages I shall consider the genesis and successive fortune of Abbo's poem and provide a new assessment of the value of theBella Parisiacae Urbis. This assessment is a necessary first step to the understanding of the reasons for …

Peripheral nerve involvement in chronic liver disease. Clinical and electrophysiological study.

1986

A clinical and electrophysiological study was carried out on 19 selected patients with chronic liver disease. Clinical signs of peripheral nerve involvement were found in 4 patients (21%); while electrophysiological impairment was present in 11 patients (57.8%). These abnormalities were mostly limited to the sensory and motor fibers of the tibialis posterior nerve. Our data confirm the presence of peripheral nerve involvement in chronic liver disease, and that it may be evidenced by careful electrophysiological examination.

Nuclear ground state properties from optical investigations

1986

Recent progress in on-line techniques of laser spectroscopy applied to nuclei far off stability is reviewed. The results concern nuclear spins, moments and charge radii, determined from hyperfine structure and isotope shift of atomic transitions. Examples of large core polarizations in the Cd-In-Sn region, derived from isotope shifts, and the octupole deformation in the Ra region, derived from ground state spins and magnetic moments, are discussed.

High-power pulsed dye laser with Fourier-limited bandwidth

1986

A high-peak-power, narrow-linewidth light source with a homogeneous beam profile has been constructed by modifications to a commercially available pulsed-dye-laser system. Output pulses of up to 10 mJ were generated with linewidths of about 50 MHz for 12-nsec pulses. The pulse-to-pulse frequency stability was better than the linewidth, and the center frequency could be scanned over a frequency range of 142.5 GHz at a wavelength of 600 nm. The performance of the system was demonstrated by observing the 6s2 1S0–6s7s1S0 transition in atomic mercury at 2λ = 312.8 nm and the 6s2S1/2–8s2S1/2 transition in atomic gold at 2λ = 308.9 nm using up to 1 mJ of frequency-doubled output for two-photon non…

Hyperfine structure and isotope shift investigations in $^{202-222}$Rn for the study of nuclear structure beyond Z = 82

1986

The hyperfine structure (hfs) and isotope shift (IS) in the isotopic chain of the radioactive element radon have been studied for the first time. The measurements were carried out by collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy at the mass separator facility ISOLDE at CERN. The IS between 16 isotopes in the mass range 202≦A≦222 and the hfs of 7 odd-A isotopes were determined in the transitions 7s [3/2]2-7p [5/2]3 (745 nm) of Rn I. The nuclear spins and moments, as well as the observed inversion of the odd-even staggering for218–222Rn, can be associated with the effects of octupole instability around N=134.

First Capture of Antiprotons in a Penning Trap: A Kiloelectronvolt Source

1986

Antiprotons from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring of CERN are slowed from 21 MeV to below 3 keV by being passed through 3 mm of material, mostly Be. While still in flight, the kiloelectronvolt antiprotons are captured in a Penning trap created by the sudden application of a 3-kV potential. Antiprotons are held for 100 s and more. Prospects are now excellent for much longer trapping times under better vacuum conditions. This demonstrates the feasibility of a greatly improved measurement of the inertial mass of the antiproton and opens the way to other intriguing experiments.

Sliding-end-labelling

1986

Abstract A method, termed ‘sliding-end-labelling’, has been devised to avoid a frequent artifact in nucleosome positioning by indirect end labelling, namely the appearing of DNA fragments originated by two nuclease cuts, one of them lying within the region covered by the probe. The method is applied to the nucleosome positioning in the yeast SUC2 gene for invertase.

Sequential variation in genomic RNA patterns of human rotaviruses isolated from infantile gastroenteritis

1986

The incidence and RNA electrophoretypes of rotaviral isolates obtained from infants and young children with acute gastroenteritis were studied from October, 1985 through April, 1986. Analysis of the viral RNA was carried out by Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by silver staining. Fourteen electrophoretypes were identified. A single dominant electrophoretype was found during the first months of the rotavirus seasonal outbreak. In contrast, a large variety of RNA patterns were observed during the latter portion of the study period. Subgrouping of rotavirus isolates by a double-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using monoclonal-detecting antibodies showed that all strains b…

A Formal Model for Developing of the self-Diagosing and Self-Repairing 8-Bits Microprocessor, and Its Investigation Using Simulation

1986

Abstract The complete model of functional diagnostics is theoretically described. It specifies the conditions, which must be satisfied if the system to be self-diagnosable. The general principles of constructing self-diagnosable systems are enumerated. The model enables the realization of self-renewal, too. The model has been developed on the basis of the works by Preparata, Metze, Chien (1967) and Hakimi, Amin (1974) . The model contains a method of diagnostics completely separeted from the physical structure of the system. Recent results (Gruber, 1978; Swiatek, 1982) indicate that it is only necessary to know the set of transformations realized by the circuit. The model has been applied t…
