Reaction and Movement Times in Men of Different Ages: A Population Study
1986
Tests of psychomotor and motor speed at different levels of complexity were studied in random samples of men aged 31 to 35, 51 to 55, and 71 to 75 yr. The study was performed as a part of a larger research project on health and functional aging. Analyses indicated significantly slower responses among older men at all levels of test complexity (maximal knee extension velocity, tapping rate, simple and choice reaction and movement times). There were marked differences both between the youngest and the middle-aged groups and between the middle-aged and the oldest groups. Within the age groups high psychomotor and motor speed were associated with a favourable functioning of certain senses (vib…
Spectrophotometric determination of mercury(II) and silver(I) with copper(II) and diethyldithiocarbamate in the presence of triton X-100
1986
Abstract Procedures for the determination of mercury and silver by displacement of diethyldithiocarbamate (DDTC) from its copper complex in the presence of 1% Triton X-100, and measurement of the decrease in the Cu(DDTC) 2 absorbance, are described. The use of the surfactant avoids the need for an extraction step. Reproducibility within 1% and detection limits of 0.25 ppm Hg(II) and 0.45 ppm Ag(I) have been obtained, and linear calibration ranges up to 13 ppm Hg(II) and 15 ppm Ag(I). In the presence of 0.1 M EDTA very good selectivity is achieved.
Determination of levamisole hydrochloride with HgI(2-)4 by a turbidimetric method and flow-injection analysis.
1986
Abstract This paper is concerned with the use of ion-association compounds in the analysis of pharmaceutical samples by FIA. The usual extraction into an organic phase is avoided by using turbidimetric detection. Determination of levamisole with HgI2−4 has been developed as a practical example: the experimental variables were optimized by the modified simplex method. The calibration graph is linear over the levamisole concentration range 7–32 μ g ml . The reproducibility (rsd) and injection sample rate are 0.9% and 80/hr, respectively.
Study of the thermal behaviour of ordered bimetallic EDTA complexes
1986
Abstract The study of the thermal behaviour of a family of isostructural ordered bimetallic MM'(EDTA)·6H 2 O complexes has been performed using TG and DTA. Formal kinetic analysis of the dehydration step has been approached using non-isothermal procedures. The resulting correlation among the calculated E a values and the cationic sizes implies a common dehydration mechanism. Copper-containing complexes show distinctive behaviour during the ligand pyrolysis processes. A mechanistic interpretation involving formation of Cu(I) and Cu(0) intermediates is furnished. The evolution of the inorganic residues in systems containing both Co and Ni is especially considered given the interest in the (Co…
Intra- and intergenotypic competition in Drosophila melanogaster: effects of density on larval survival and rate of development
1986
We have examined the effects of density and frequency in the larval competition of Drosophila melanogaster by measuring three fitness components: viability (V), mean development time (MDT) and a combination of these two (E). We have detected (contrary to most published results) non-linear effects of density in single-genotype cultures; in addition, different functions are required to describe the density effects below and above the optimal density. Frequency has also non-linear effects in the two-genotype cultures. Only one polymorphic equilibrium frequency, which is stable, occurs with respect to V; but two polymorphic equilibria, one stable and one unstable, exist with respect to E. The r…

A polydiagnostic scale for dimensional classification of endogenous depression. Derivation and validation.
1986
Several operational diagnoses (OPD) for endogenous depression have been proposed. However--though aiming at similar clinical concepts--the amount of association and agreement between different OPD is rather low. In this study the relationship between eight OPD (Research Diagnostic Criteria, DSM-III, Michigan Discrimination Index, Newcastle Scale I, Newcastle Scale II, Taylor-Abrams Criteria, Vienna Research Criteria, Hamilton Endogenomorphy Index) was assessed by applying latent trait analyses to the classificatory data of these eight OPD which were rated simultaneously in a sample of 173 depressive inpatients. According to these analyses six OPD (RDC, DSM-III, NCS-I, NCS-II, TAC and VRC) a…
Pigment patterns in mutants affecting the biosynthesis of pteridines and xanthommatin in Drosophila melanogaster.
1986
Eye-color mutants of Drosophila melanogaster have been analyzed for their pigment content and related metabolites. Xanthommatin and dihydroxanthommatin (pigments causing brown eye color) were measured after selective extraction in acidified butanol. Pteridines (pigments causing red eye color) were quantitated after separation of 28 spots by thin-layer chromatography, most of which are pteridines and a few of which are fluorescent metabolites from the xanthommatin pathway. Pigment patterns have been studied in 45 loci. The pteridine pathway ramifies into two double branches giving rise to isoxanthopterin, “drosopterins,” and biopterin as final products. The regulatory relationship among the …
Mechanically induced reflex responses in human triceps brachii.
1986
The short and long latency reflex responses of human triceps brachii muscle were recorded in 14 healthy volunteers. An electromechanical hammer was used to stretch the muscle and recordings were made from a surface electromyogram. The monosynaptic tendon reflex occurred at a mean latency of 12.5 ms (SE 0.7 ms). Later responses were observed in activated conditions (weak force production, preparatory period) at a mean latency of 62.8 ms (SE 3.5 ms). The amplitude of the short latency reflex increased during weak tension, the long latency reflex amplitude seemed to increase during the preparatory period testing. The amplitude increases can be attributed to increased lower motoneuron excitabil…
Two integrals and some modified versions — Critical remarks
1986
The aim of this paper is to discuss different constructions of integrals (Sections 3 and 4) based on @?-decomposable measures (Section 1). According to the classification of the continuous t-conorms @? in essentially two types namely v and Archimedean t-conorms, there exist mainly two types of integrals namely the constructions of Sugeno (Section 3) and of Weber (Section 4). Further constructions corresponding to the Archimedean case result to be special cases or not well defined (Section 4). In all cases a crucial property is some restricted distribution law for the pair (@?, ) with an appropriate operation(Section 2). Some applications shall illustrate the use of the two integrals (Sectio…
Relativistic scattering theory of charged spinless particles
1986
In the context of a relativistic quantum mechanics we discuss the scattering of two and three charged spinless particles. The corresponding transition operators are shown to satisfy four-dimensional Lippmann-Schwinger and eight-dimensional Faddeev-type equations, respectively. A simplified model of two particles with Coulomb interaction can be solved exactly. We calculate: (i) The partial waveS-matrix from which we extract the bound state spectrum. The latter agrees with a fourth-order result of Schwinger, (ii) The full scattering amplitude which in the weakfield limit coincides with the expression derived by Fried et al. from eikonalized QED.
Continuous separation and identification of neutronrich neptunium isotopes from heavy-ion reactions by means of the centrifuge system “sisak”
1986
Abstract Neutron-rich neptunium isotopes formed in direct transfer reactions between 136 Xe projectiles and targets of 244 Pu have been separated from other reaction products with the on-line liquid-liquid extraction system SISAK. A four-detector delay method was used to determine the half-lives of the previously unknown isotopes 243 Np and 244 Np. From the decay of the 287.4 keV γ-line a half-life of 1.8 ± 0.3 min was determined for 243 Np. From the decay curves of the γ-lines at 162.7 and 216.7 keV, which fit into the known level scheme of 244 Pu, a half-life of 2.5 ± 0.3 min results for 244 Np.
MINDO/3 Study of the Rearrangement of 1-Methylcyclohexyl Cation to 1,2-Dimethylcyclopentyl Cation
1986
The rearrangement of the 1-methylcyclohexyl cation to the 1,2-dimethylcyclopentyl cation has been studied by MINDO/3 calculations, as an application of the branching mechanism model for cycloalkanes. Possible intermediates and transition states have been characterized by diagonalization of their Hessian matrixes. Two nonequivalent pathways, α and β scissions, are relatively close in energy. The calculated transition states are almost equivalent in energy to those found for cyclohexyl cation. Hence, the energy barriers are higher for the rearrangement of the 1-methyl than for cyclohexyl cation, because the former is less stable than the latter.
Ultrastructure of putative migrating cells in the cerebral cortex of Lacerta galloti.
1986
Cells considered to be migratory in the cerebral cortex of adult lizards are ultrastructurally of two types. Nuclei in the first type have highly dispersed chromatin, creating a spongy appearance, whereas in the second type the chromatin is irregularly clumped. Both types of cells are closely associated with processes of radial ependymal glia cells, which perhaps orient their migratory pathways. Cells with spongy chromatin show an increase in cytoplasmic organelles and progressive chromatin condensation as they travel from the ependymal layer to the granular layer. Possibly these cells account for the neuronal increase that takes place in the granular layer during postnatal life. Cells with…

Preferential solvation of lysozyme and bovine serum albumin in copper salt solutions. A quantitative chromatographic study
1986
Preferential solvation λ parameters for systems containing water-copper salt-protein (lysozyme or bovine serum albumin) have been determined by gel permeation chromatography. When water is preferentially adsorbed by the protein, good agreement is found between λ values determined by this method and by equilibrium dialysis-differential refractometry. The influence of the concentration and type of anion component of the copper salt, protein concentration and temperature has been investigated. The methodology used also allows direct visualization of the metal ion bound to the protein and to determine binding parameters. Apparent association constants of 2.0 × 102 M−1 and 1.7 × 102 M−1 have bee…

Cinnamic acid moieties were incorporated into amphiphilic compounds containing one and two alkyl chains. These lipid-like compounds with photoreactive units undergo self-organization to form monolayers at the gas-water interface and bilayer structures (vesicles) in aqueous solutions. The photoreaction of the cinnamic acid moiety induced by 254 nm UV light was investigated in the crystalline state, in monolayers, in vesicles and in solution in organic solvents. The single-chain amphiphiles undergo dimerization to yield photoproducts with twice the molecular weight of the corresponding monomers in organized systems. The photoreaction of amphiphiles containing two cinnamic acid groups occurs v…
Morphology of placental villi after premature delivery and its clinical relevance
1986
Based on a new concept of maturation of the placental villous tree and its disorders (synchronous and asynchronous immaturity, asynchronous maturity, hyperpermaturity, and terminal villi deficiency) we studied the possible effect of the placental villous tree on the premature onset of labour. In mature normal neonates irregular and asynchronous villous patterns were found in 50% of cases. In prematurely delivered neonates, only 33% of the corresponding placentas show synchronous immature villous patterns. Uterine bleeding in the first trimester was associated with a 42% of incidence of premature maturation of the villous tree. These findings strengthen the idea that hormonal imbalance in ea…
Chronic T cell leukemia with unusual cellular characteristics in ataxia telangiectasia
1986
Abstract A 27-year-old male patient with ataxia telangiectasia (AT) developed atypical chronic lymphocytic leukemia with increasing bone marrow infiltration in the absence of organomegaly. One-third of the leukemia cells expressed a mature suppressor/cytotoxic T cell phenotype (T3+ T4- T6- T8+ T10-), two-thirds demonstrated additional helper/inducer T cell- associated antigens (T3+ T4+ T6- T8+ T10-), and a small fraction reacted with a natural killer (NK) cell-specific monoclonal antibody (Leu 11+). The proliferative response to stimulation in vitro with lectins and various monoclonal antibodies resembled the proliferation pattern of mature thymocytes: The cells responded to phytohemaggluti…
A Rotational Thermalization Model for the Calculation of Collisionally Narrowed Isotropic Raman-Scattering Spectra - Application to the Srs-N2 Q-Bran…
1986
Abstract A model for the calculation of collisionally narrowed isotropic. Raman scattering spectra is proposed. In this model, the rotational transition probabilities are calculated within the strong collision approximation, allowing the rotational energy transfer rates to be expressed in terms of the sole individual Q( J ) line broadening coefficients. These transfer rates satisfy both detailed balance principle and unitarity of the scattering matrix in contrast with most of the previous approaches. Under further approximation concerning the rotational distribution of the collisional frequency, simpler expressions for transfer rates are deduced, which do not satisfy necessarily both unitar…
Immunohistochemical location of HPL, SP1 and β-HCG in normal placentas of varying gestational age
1986
Sixty-four placentas at various gestational ages were examined by immunohistochemical stains for HPL, SP1 and beta-HCG according to a modified PAP method (Sternberger 1970). Syncytiotrophoblast cell layer was identified as the main site of synthesis. Extravillous immunohistochemical reactions for HPL and SP1 (but not for beta-HCG) were found in X-cells of the basal plate and in the intervillous trophoblast islands. These cell types would thus seem to be derived from trophoblast. Hofbauer-cells of villous connective tissue stained specifically for beta-HCG apparently because of HCG phagocytosis. The intensity of staining for HPL, SP1 and beta-HCG was evaluated semiquantitatively in the syncy…
Studies of the hydrodynamic evolution of matter produced in fluctuations inp¯pcollisions and in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions
1986
In this first paper of a series of two, we present a comprehensive study of the hydrodynamic evolution of matter produced in the central region of ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions and in high-multiplicity fluctuations of p-barp-italic collisions. We shall begin with a discussion of the limits of the applicability of a perfect-fluid hydrodynamic description of high-energy collisions. A simple bag-model equation of state is argued to have qualitative and semiquantitative features expected from lattice gauge theory and present theoretical understanding. We also discuss the boundary conditions for the perfect-fluid hydrodynamic equations, and what classes of simple events would correspond…

Covalently crosslinked liquid crystalline networks with elastic properties were prepared in isotropic solution from linear liquid crystalline polymers. As linear precursors for the networks were used: (i) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the side groups (polyacrylates and polymethacrylates), (ii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in the main chain (polymalonates) and (iii) polymers with the mesogenic groups in main chain and side groups (“combined liquid crystalline polymers”). In all crosslinked polymers the liquid crystalline phases of the linear polymers are retained. For low degrees of crosslinking (≤2 mol-%) the phase transition temperatures remain nearly unchanged. These elastom…
Anomalous diffraction profiles of alkali-halide-alkali-cyanide mixed crystals.
1986
The x-ray diffraction profiles of four mixed alkali halides-alkali cyanides have been studied. At the threshold concentration where the systems change over from ferroelastic ordering to the glass state, the profiles are highly unusual. The diffracted intensity of transverse scans along the cubic axes follows $I\ensuremath{\sim}\mathrm{exp}(\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}|\ensuremath{\xi}|)$, where $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the reduced wave vector, measured from the line center.
ChemInform Abstract: An ab initio CI Study on the Rotational Barrier of the Allyl Anion.
1986
All-electron and pseudopotential non-empirical calculations have been performed on C 2v and C s (syn, anti) allyl anion conformations. Using a double-zeta valence-shell basis set within the Epstein-Nesbet definition of the unperturbed Hamiltonian, a value about 19 kcal/mol is found for the barrier to rotation of the allyl anion. This value is the theoretical value obtained with greater accuracy, and the lowest one for the rotational barrier.

Finite renormalization effects in the induceds¯dHvertex
1986
The finite renormalization contributions to the s-bard-italicH-italic vertex are examined in the standard model. They are explicitly shown to cancel each other among diagrams, so that the lower bound on the Higgs-boson mass M-italic/sub H-italic/>325 MeV is not affected by such effects.
Subtypes of panic attacks and ICD-9 classification.
1986
No single ICD-9 category corresponds to panic disorder (DSM-III). To investigate whether patients with panic attacks can be identified by means of ICD-9, 97 patients with three panic attacks within 3 weeks were recruited from various medical centers, and were classified independently according to DSM-III and ICD-9. The ICD-9 diagnoses were scattered over a broad range of categories, and it was impossible to identify patients with panic disorder in this manner. Anxiety state, affective psychosis, and depressive neurosis were the most frequent ICD-9 diagnoses. The boundary between affective psychosis on the one hand and anxiety state and depressive neurosis on the other hand was validated by …
Trace elements in natural metallic iron from Disko Island, Greenland
1986
The largest occurrence of natural metallic iron on Earth is on the island of Disko, Greenland. Metallic iron is found there in a variety of different types, from small metal particles in basalts to large meter-sized blocks. We have studied three different types of metallic iron: small metal spherules (< 300 μm) in basaltic magma; larger metal grains (300 μm-3 mm), often composed of aggregates of smaller particles, in similar host rocks; and massive iron lumps (up to several tons). Analytical data for 13 siderophile elements in samples from these three types are presented. All metals analysed have a distinctly crustal pattern of siderophile elements. High Co/Ni, Re/Ir or W/Ir ratios clearly …
Evaluation of routine follow-up after surgery for breast carcinoma.
1986
Close postoperative follow-up of patients with breast cancer permits the early detection of possible recurrence of disease. Such follow-up allows for the detection of a tumor mass, that is small enough to permit adequate treatment leading to an increased survival time and better quality of life. Thus we studied 85 patients treated by radical mastectomy in stages I, II, and III during the period from December 1977 to June 1982. Among 82 patients, 41 had axillary node involvement and received adjuvant chemotherapy with C.M.F. All patients received a strict follow-up. Thirty-two patients showed recurrence of the disease, with 28. 1% being discovered while still asymptomatic. Seventy-five perce…
