Catecholato complexes of o-phenylenebis(salicylideneiminato)iron(III) and meso-tetra(parasulphonatephenyl)porphyrinatoferrate(III). A comment on the …

1986

Abstract Formation of catecholato complexes of Fe(saloph) + and Fe(TPPS) 3− in solution is studied. Fe(saloph)(cat) − contains a cat 2− bidentate ligand. Its formation in solution competes efficiently with the hydrolysis and dimerization of Fe(saloph) + to give Fe 2 (saloph) 2 O. This behaviour shows that the planar saloph 2− ligand, as the analogous salen 2− , is easily distorted, and is not as rigid as generally considered. Iron(III) porphyrin Fe(TPPS) 3− with catechol gives the complex [Fe(TPPS)(Hcat)] 4− . Deprotonation of the unidentate Hcat − ligand cannot be studied because the smaller stability of the complex, and the dimerization of the metalloporphyrin dominates in basic medium. T…

A Penning Trap for Studying Cluster Ions

1986

We propose to use a Penning trap for spectroscopy of stored cluster ions. A similar device has been built for the purpose of mass measurements of short-lived nuclei produced at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN. A resolving power of 500,000 in a mass measurement of39K and an accuracy of 2 × 10−7 for the85Rb/39K mass ratio were obtained. An efficiency for in-flight capture as high as 70% was achieved. The method provides very high sensitivity since typically only 10 to 100 ions are stored in the trap. We intend to perform laser spectroscopy on trapped Na clusters as a first application of the trap technique.

Direct projections to the rat pineal gland via the stria medullaris thalami. An anterograde tracing study by use of horseradish peroxidase.

1986

The possible presence of a direct nervous projection from the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus to the pineal gland of the rat was investigated by means of the anterograde neuron-tracing method using horseradish peroxidase. The tracer was injected unilaterally into the PVN and the animals were allowed to survive between 12 and 26 h. Numerous peroxidase-positive fibers were observed, ipsilateral to the injection site, in the stria medullaris thalami and could be followed into the medial habenular nucleus and the habenular commissure. From there, fibers penetrated into the deep pineal gland (lamina intercalaris), and further into the pineal stalk. These data support results of…

Monoclonal antibodies to various acidic (type I) cytokeratins of stratified epithelia

1986

Abstract We determined the reactivity of two monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratins that are typically expressed in certain stratified epithelia and several human squamous cell carcinomas using immunoblotting techniques and immunofluorescence microscopy. Antibody Ks 8.12 reacted specifically with cytokeratin polypeptides nos. 13 and 16, and stained noncornified squamous epithelia in a rather uniform way. The examination of diverse human carcinomas showed all squamous cell carcinomas to be positively stained with this antibody, whereas all adenocarcinomas were negative. Another antibody, KK 8.60, reacted with polypeptides nos. 10 and 11, and uniformly stained the suprabasal layers of the epid…

Clavines as antitumor agents. 3: Cytostatic activity and structure/activity relationships of 1-alkyl agroclavines and 6-alkyl 6-noragroclavines.

1986

The cytostatic potential of twenty antibiotic agroclavines has been examined in the L5178y mouse lymphoma cell system. Twelve of these compounds are described for the first time. It is shown that the substituent at N-1 of agroclavine is very important whereas the substituent at N-6 is of less influence if it is not hydrogen. Incorporation studies in the presence of 1-propylagroclavine suggest that DNA synthesis in the lymphoma cells is inhibited. The effect on the corresponding [3H]thymidine incorporation in murine spleen lymphocytes is comparably low. Neither a significant change of mRNA efflux nor of DNA polymerase alpha and beta activities was caused. The mechanism of action seems to be …

Equilibria in the anionic polymerization of methyl methacrylate, 1. Chain-length dependence of the rate and equilibrium constants

1986

The rate constants of polymerization and cyclization and the equilibrium constants of polymerization are calculated from kinetic data of the anionic oligomerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by methyl α-lithioisobutyrate in THF at 25°C, and of the “disproportionation” of living oligomers. The numeric method reported earlier was improved. The rate constants of cyclization decrease with chain-length, due to increasing steric hindrance. The rate constants of polymerization depend on the concentration of active centres, due to the formation of associates. Rate and equilibrium constants of polymerization decrease with chain-length. This is discussed in terms of intramolecular coordination…

Teacher Stress over a School Year

1986

Abstract: Makinen, R. & Kinnunen, U. 1986. Teacher Stress over a School Year. Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research 30, 55‐70. The accumulation of and recovery from stress among teachers was studied longitudinally over a period of 14 months. Variables related to psychological state and health together with hours of work, free time and night time rest, and the quality of interpersonal relations were measured repeatedly (17 times) in a group of 187 teachers. The results indicate accumulation of stress during the autumn term with the result that weekend recovery disappears in November‐December. The Christmas, mid‐winter and Easter holidays seem to prevent stress accumulation during the …

Use of kinetic DTA and TG methods for compatibility tests on 2,4,6--trinitrotoluene

1986

We have investigated the suitability of thermoanalytical methods for compatibility tests on explosives and contact materials. DTA and TG curves of various materials were evaluated using two DTA and four TG methods and one DSC method. TNT was used as model substance. The contact materials were paraffin, polyethylene, an epoxy resin paint and an epoxy glue. In earlier tests the first two were found compatible and the latter two incompatible with TNT. None of the methods provides an absolute value for the activation energy. However, in compatibility tests only the relative change in the activation energy is of interest and, for this, three of the methods proved informative.

Microscopic description of even-even nuclei in the mass A = 130 region

1986

Abstract We present a systematic study of even-even nuclei in the mass A = 130 region using a microscopic nuclear structure model, in which the nuclear wave functions are approximated by linear combinations of number- and spin-projected zero-quasiparticle and two-quasipartile determinants obtained from a self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean field. With a fixed hamiltonian, being a slightly renormalized Brueckner G-matrix based on the Bonn potential the model is able to reproduce the main trends of empirical energy and electromagnetic properties of the transitional, soft nuclei in the region. The empirical nature of the crossing ( πh 11 2 ) 2 and ( vh 11 2 ) 2 superbands in Ce and Ba…

Calculation of theO(? s 2 ) parity-violating structure functions in $$e^ + e^ - \to q\bar qg$$

1986

We calculate the two nonvanishingO(αs2) parity-violating structure functions that contribute to\(e^ + e^ - \xrightarrow{{\gamma ,Z}}q\bar qg\). We discuss how these can be measured. We work with massless quarks and gluons and use dimensional regularization to regularize ultra-violet and infrared singularities. We carefully discuss how to deal withγ5 in the dimensional regularization scheme when infrared singularities are present.

Electropherotyping of human rotaviruses: An epidemiological survey of rotavirus infections in Sicily

1986

An electrophoretic analysis of rotavirus RNA segments was carried out on 522 faecal specimens, obtained from children hospitalized in Sicily in the period 1981/85. One hundred and one viral isolates could be characterized with respect to the electrophoretic pattern of their genomic RNAs. This analysis revealed that in 1981/82 different electropherotypes cocirculated in the infant population. In 1983 one of the patterns became prevalent; in 1984/85 only one electropherotype was detected, both in Palermo and Catania specimens. The serotyping showed that all viral strains with the prevalent electropherotype were subgroup II and serotype 1. These results contrast with the extensive genome varia…

Impaired cellular immune responses in chronic renal failure: Evidence for a T cell defect

1986

Impaired cellular immune responses in chronic renal failure: Evidence for a T cell defect. Cellular immune responses in vitro were studied in 24 patients on chronic hemodialysis and 16 healthy volunteers with normal kidney function. Patients on maintenance hemodialysis had lymphopenia with diminished numbers of both T4 + and T8 + T-lymphocytes. The T4/T8 ratios were within the normal range. Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) showed a diminished proliferative response upon stimulation with concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin and poke weed mitogen. When cell surface antigens were used for stimulation (mixed lymphocyte culture) uremic lymphocytes also showed a lower proliferation rate. Although…

The triple-alpha-reaction at low temperatures.

1986

We have studied the triple-α-reaction at low temperatures which is of importance on accreting white dwarfs and neutron stars. Although we have improved a recent investigation of Nomoto, Thielemann and Miyaji on several points, we find a reaction rate for the relevant temperature range (T=107−108K) which is rather similar to the previous result. In particular, our improved study confirms that helium might be ignited on accreting white dwarfs at temperaturesT≦4.107 K.

Influence of the process variables on the product distribution and catalyst decay during cracking of paraffins

1986

Abstract The influence of the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon, reaction temperature, time on stream and the presence of olefins on the product distribution and the kinetics and decay during the cracking of n-heptane on an REHY zeolite were studied. It was found that the isomerization to cracking ratio depends on the hydrocarbon partial pressure. The active sites for cracking and isomerization are not the same and those for cracking decay faster, the selectivity changing with the degree of decay of the zeolite. The protolytic to β-cracking ratio, and therefore the paraffin to olefin ratio, are a function of the partial pressure of n-heptane. Both reactants and products have a marked infl…

Supersymmetric particle model with additional bosonic coordinates

1986

A new supersymmetric particle model in enlarged superspace with additional bosonic coordinateszij,\(\bar z_{ij} \) (zij=−zji;i=1...N, N even) canonically conjugated to central charges is quantized. The superwave functions which are obtained through first quantization are the free superfields on the enlarged superspace\((x^\mu , \theta _{\alpha i} , \bar \theta _i^{\dot \alpha } , z_{ij} , \bar z_{ij} )\). Two particular cases (N=2 with one additional complex bosonic coordinate andN=8 with seven additional real coordinates) are considered in more detail.

AMORPHOUS SEMICONDUCTOR-ELECTROLYTE JUNCTION. A NEW INTERPRETATION OF THE IMPEDANCE DATA OF AMORPHOUS SEMICONDUCTING FILMS ON METALS.

1986

On the basis of the theory of amorphous semiconductor Schottky barrier an equivalent electrical circuit of the amorphous oxide film/electrolyte interface is proposed.—The analytical expressions for the equivalent conductance and capacitance of the barrier are reported in the hypothesis of a constant density of states within the mobility gap.—According to this model, the semiconducting properties and the impedance behaviour at different frequencies of anodic oxide films on Niobium are interpreted by taking into account the amorphous nature of the films.—An explanation for the anomalous behaviour of the Mott-Schottky plots usually observed with amorphous anodic oxide films is presented.—The p…

Oxygen uptake by excised gills ofProcambarus clarkii (Girard) from albufera lake of Valencia, Spain, under heavy metal treatments

1986

The American red crayfish Procambarus clarkii, originally from Louisiana (USA) was introduced in Spain in the 70's in the Guadalquivir River swamps. It appeared first randomly and in a more regular basis afterwards since 1978 in the Albufera Lake south of Valencia and in the surrounding rice fields. Albufera lake and surrounding rice fields waters are being subject since the last three decades to very heavy load of sewage, toxic industrial residues including heavy metals and pesticides from the many urban and industrial settlements in the zone. In the present study, the authors have investigated the effect that heavy metals (Chromium, Cadmium and Mercury) have on the oxygen uptake by excise…

The structure of a dinuclear silver(I) complex: Ag2[S2C2(CN)2] [P(C6H5)3]4

1986

Abstract The crystal structure of the dimeric Ag maleonitriledithiolate complex, Ag2[S2C2(CN)2] [P(C6- H5)3]4 (1), has been performed. Complex 1 crystallizes in the space group P21/c with a = 12.2898(77), b = 23.8325(91), c = 23.1790(118) A, β = 101.315(43)° and Z = 4. Refinement using 3253 reflections with Fo2>3σ(Fo2) yielded R = 0.0662, Rw= 0.0669. The most interesting aspect of the structure is the strong bridging interaction of the chelating maleonitriledithiolate ligand with the second Ag center, where a Ag-S distance of 2.478 A is observed. The residual bonding capability of the sulfur atoms in the chelating anion [Ag(S2C2(CN)2)(PPh3)2]− for [Ag(PPh3)2]+ is demonstrated.

Vitamin A and ciliated cells I. Respiratory epithelia

1986

To estimate the role of vitamin A on ciliated cells we investigated whether ciliated cells undergo any alteration during vitamin A deficiency. The epithelia examined include the ciliated cells of the respiratory tract and the ciliated sensory cells of the inner ear, the tongue, and the olfactory cells. This part of the paper will describe the ciliated epithelium of the tracheobronchial tract and its relation to vitamin A status. During vitamin A deficiency a partial loss of ciliae can be observed before any squamous metaplasia (which usually occurs during longer lasting vitamin A deficiency) develops. The scanning electron microscopic data illustrate the altered surface of the epithelium du…
