ChemInform Abstract: Cyclic Esters of Aliphatic Diacids with Pyrocatechol and Hydroquinone.
1986
Cyclic esters of adipic acid, suberic acid and sebacic acid were prepared by reaction of the acid dichlorides and pyrocatechol or hydroquinone in benzene under high dilution conditions. While only the cyclic dimers could be obtained from hydroquinone, pyrocatechol formed cyclic monomers as well as cyclic dimers (and also a cyclic dimer with succinic acid). The structure of all compounds was confirmed by1H-NMR- and mass spectra. The crystal structures of the pyrocatechol esters were determined by single crystal X-ray analysis.
Long-term treatment of acromegaly with the somatostatin analogue SMS 201-995 over 6 months.
1986
This study examined the effects of the long-acting selective mini somatostatin analogue (SMS) 201-995 in two acromegalic patients who were treated for 3 and 6 months, respectively. During treatment the mean growth hormone levels (25.3 and 20.8 ng/ml vs 5.9 and 10.6 ng/ml) and somatomedin C levels (6.2 and 6.2 IU/ml vs 3.3 and 3.8 IU/ml) decreased and the patients reported an improvement in their symptoms. The main side effect was an increase in stool fat excretion which did exceed the normal range (less than 7 g/day) in one patient. Five acromegalics who received 2 X 50 micrograms SMS 201-995/day for 5 days showed a significant increase of stool fat excretion (1.7 vs 3.5 g/day; p less than …
Different micrococcal nuclease cleavage patterns characterize transcriptionally active and inactive sea-urchin histone genes.
1986
Micrococcal nuclease (MNase) and DNaseI have made a great contribution to our present understanding of the structural organization of the eucaryotic genome [l - 31. The enhanced sensitivity of active portions of the genome to DNaseI gave, in fact, the first indication of differences in the nucleoproteic arrangement of the transcribed as compared to the silent DNA regions [4]. The use of MNase, as a probe of the chromatin organization of specific genes in the active and inactive state, provided additional evidence for this and further showed that the packing of several coding segments of DNA in a regular array of nucleosomal particles is severely but reversibly affected by the transcriptiona…

Preparation and reactions of palladium(II) complexes with C2-bonded heteroaromatic ligands trans[PdCl(RN)(PPh3)2] (RN = 2-pyridyl, 2-pirazyl, 2-pyrim…
1986
Abstract The complexes trans -[PdCl(R N )(PPh 3 ) 2 ] (I) [R N = 2-pyridyl (2-Py), 2-pyrazyl (2-pyz), 2-pyrimidyl (2-pym) group] have been prepared in high yield by deprotonation with NEt 3 of the corresponding cationic compounds trans [PdCl(R N H) (PPh 3 ) 2 ] + (R N H = N -protonated C 2 -heteroaromatic ligand) in the presence of an excess of PPh 3 . In chlorinated solvents, complexes I undergo a slow reversible dimerization into the binuclear derivatives [PdCl(μ-R N )(PPh 3 )] 2 (II) (μ-R N = C 2 , N 1 -bridging ligand). From the 31 P NMR spectra in 1,2-dichloroethane the following dissociation constants were obtained: 1.9 mol 1 −1 (R N = 2-py), 5.1 × 10 −2 (2-pym), 6.6 × 10 −3 (2-pyz). …
Electronmicroscopical Contrast by Palladium Chloride
1986
Thin sections of glutaraldehyde-fixed, epoxy resin-embedded bone marrow from rats were treated with 2% palladium chloride in 2% concentrated HCl. This procedure was found to induce high electron density in chromatin from all cell types and in cytoplasmic granules of neutrophils and eosinophils. In the latter, the crystalline body showed more contrast than the matrix.
Heterogeneity of Morquio disease.
1986
Further clinical heterogeneity of Morquio disease, mucopolysaccharidosis IV (MPS IV), is delineated by the observation of a 30-year-old man with unusually mild clinical manifestations. He is 156 cm tall, has comparatively mild skeletal abnormalities and fine corneal deposits. Keratosulfaturia is absent. N-Acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate (GalNAc-6-S) sulfatase (E.C. 3.1.6.-) was markedly reduced in his fibroblasts. The residual enzyme activity exhibited a pH profile comparable to that of patients with the "classical" form of the disorder. From our observation and a review of the literature it is concluded that Morquio disease can be divided in several subgroups: besides the severe ("classical"…
Anti-tumor activity of two binuclear gold(I) complexes with bridging dithiolate ligands
1986
Abstract Two new binuclear complexes of gold with bridging dithiolate ligands were synthesized and characterized: (o3PAu)2(μ-DTE) and (Et3PAu)2(μ-DMTA); H2DTE=dithioerylthritol and H2DMTA=2,5-dimer- capto-1-thia-3,4-diazole. These compounds and three gold compounds with antiarthritic activity (gold sodium thiomalate, gold thioglucose and Et3PAuCl) were tested for antitumor activity using the Ehrlich- Ascites tumor cell in mice. Only (o3PAu)e(μ-DTE) showed significant activity.
Kinetics of phase separation in polymer blends for deep quenches
1986
Electro microscopy was used to study the phase separation kinetics of a polystyrene/polyvinylmethylether system subjected to a critical deep quench. The size of the phase-separated domains was found to increase linearly with time, implying that hydrodynamic effects control the rate of growth of the domains in the time scale and temperature range under consideration. From these measurements the growth velocity and approximate diffusion constants can be determined for three different temperatures. Comparison of these results with those obtained by light scattering on other systems and with theoretical predictions is possible by replotting in dimensionless units.

Evaluation of two oxygen analyzers by computerized data acquisition and processing
1986
Monitoring of inspired oxygen concentration during anesthesia with nitrous oxide is becoming accepted as essential. This type of monitoring demands accurate monitors that respond rapidly. We evaluated two such devices for their response patterns to rapid changes in oxygen concentration, a galvanic or "fuel cell" unit and a polarographic device. Data were stored after analog-to-digital conversion. The response patterns to stepwise changes in nitrous oxide and oxygen mixtures were recorded at flow rates ranging from 2 to 10 L/min. Both units responded accurately to all changes in the absolute oxygen concentration; the polarographic unit was, on average, twice as fast. Responsiveness to nitrou…

Embedding linear spaces with two line degrees in finite projective planes
1986
In this paper we shall classify all finite linear spaces with line degrees n and n-k having at most n2+n+1 lines. As a consequence of this classification it follows: If n is large compared with k, then any such linear space can be embedded in a projective plane of order n−1 or n.
Childhood neuromuscular disease with rimmed vacuoles
1986
A 5-year-old boy suffered from a slowly progressive non-familial neuromuscular disease, clinically marked by generalised muscle weakness, atrophy and hypotonia, a "myopathic" EMG and mildly elevated CK values. His gastrocnemius muscle showed marked myopathy, type I fibre predominance, and numerous "rimmed" vacuoles. This boy's condition is regarded as a childhood neuromuscular disease with rimmed vacuoles.
Angular distributions in quasi-fission reactions
1986
Abstract Angular distributions for fission-like fragments were measured in the systems 50Ti, 56Fe + 208Pb by applying an off-line K X-ray activation technique. The distributions d2σ/dθdZ exhibit forward-backward asymmetries that are strongly Z-dependent. They result from a process (quasi-fission) which yields nearly symmetric masses in times comparable to the rotational period of the composite system. A method for obtaining the variance of the tilting angular momentum, K02, from these skewed, differential angular distributions is described. The results indicate that the tilting mode is not fully excited in quasi-fission reactions. The results are compared to the sum of the variances of all …
Nonlinear calculations of the energy loss of slow ions in an electron gas
1986
Abstract The stopping power of an electron gas for slow ons was calculated based on nonlinear, density-functional methods. These new theoretical results show substatnial increases in stopping powers for protons compared to calculations based on linear theory and provide a good qualitative description of the Z1-oscillations found in experimental data.

Miocene fossil cercopithecoids from Kenya
1986
Fossil cercopithecoid material from Ngeringerowa, Ngorora, and Nakali, dated at between 8.5 and 10.5 m.y., is described. The specimens are the only cercopithecoid remains dated between 15 and 6 m.y. from sub-Saharan Africa. The mandible of asmall colobine from Ngeringerowa (similar in size to Colobus verus) is assigned to a new genus and species, Microcolobus tugenensis. Unlike other colobine genera, the symphysis of Microcolobus lacks an inferior transverse torus. A colobine lower M1 or 2 from Nakali is longer and narrower than molars of M. tugenensis, indicating that it may belong to a distinct taxon. A P4 from Ngorora cannot be assigned confidently to subfamily, due to its unique metacon…
Modulation by fenoldopam (SKF 82526) and bromocriptine of the electrically evoked release of vasopressin from the rat neurohypophysis. Effects of dop…
1986
1. Single neurointermediate lobes were fixed by their stalks to a platinum wire electrode and incubated in Krebs-bicarbonate solution. Vasopressin release into the medium was determined by a radioimmunoassay. Vasopressin secretion was increased by electrical stimulation (15 Hz, 10 s trains with 10 s intervals for 10 min). 2. Fenoldopam (SKF 82526) had a dual effect on vasopressin release, 30 nM decreasing (by 30%) and 3 μM increasing (by 32%) the evoked vasopressin secretion. The facilitatory effect of fenoldopam was antagonized in a concentration-dependent manner by flupenthixol but not by sulpiride. Sulpiride (1 μM) prevented the inhibitory effect of fenoldopam (30 μM). 3. After pretreatm…
Hydrocracking ofn-heptane. Study of NiO-MoO3catalysts supported on a HY ultrastable zeolite
1986
The hydrocracking of n-heptane in the temperature range of 573 to 623 K and at 2.45 × 106 Pa pressure has been employed as a test reaction for the study of Ni—Mo bifunctional catalysts supported on a HY ultrastable zeolite. Two groups of catalysts containing 8 and 12 wt% of MoO3 and different amounts of NiO have been studied. In both series a maximum in the activity has been obtained for catalysts with a Ni/Mo atomic ratio of 0.8-1.0. The order of the impregnation of the oxides can have little influence on the activity. The most active catalyst has been obtained when the zeolite is exchanged with NH+4 ions until the Na+ level is less than 2% of the original and calcined at 823 K to obtain a…

Melosira distans var. tenella and Eunotia zasuminensis, two poorly known planktonic diatoms in Finnish lakes
1986
The occurrence and ecology of two poorly known planktonic diatoms, Melosira distans var. tenella (Nyg.) M.-B. Florin and Eunotia zasuminensis (Cabejsz.) Korner in central Finland is discussed. Both species have their maximum in late summer when water temperature is > 15°C and they prefer slightly acid water (pH < 7), low conductivity (less than 4 mS/m) and a moderate degree of dystrophy with C.O.D. 10–20 mg O2/l and water colour 60–120 mg Pt/1. Melosira distans var. tenella was found in ca. 80% of the central Finnish lakes studied, but it is not reported in previously published papers. Eunotia zasuminensis is rarer, but is, however, recorded in at least 22 lakes in central Finland.
The mechanical efficiency of locomotion in men and women with special emphasis on stretch-shortening cycle exercises.
1986
The mechanical efficiency of the leg extensor musculature of men and women was examined with a special "sledge ergometer". The subjects (ten males and ten females) performed pure positive work, pure negative work and a combination of negative and positive work (stretch-shortening cycle). The mechanical efficiency of pure positive work was on average 19.8 +/- 1.2% for female subjects and 17.4 +/- 1.2% for male subjects (t = 4.12, P less than 0.001), although the work intensity was equal in both groups. The mechanical efficiency of pure negative work was slightly lower in women than in men (59.3 +/- 14.4% vs 75.6 +/- 29.3%). The mechanical efficiency of positive work (eta +) in a stretch-shor…
EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BOUTONNEUSE FEVER IN WESTERN SICILY
1986
The distribution and prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsial infection in the ixodid dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus were found to occur at a rate of 19.7% with variation related to geographic and sociooccupational factors. A higher rate of infection was demonstrated in ticks removed from dogs associated with documented cases of boutonneuse fever. The results fit into available clinical and seroepidemiologic data on Rickettsia conorii infection in western Sicily.
Studies on the Mechanism of Inhibition by Phosphinothricin of Glutamine Synthetase Isolated from Triticum aestivum L.
1986
Summary The activity of glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) isolated from roots and leaves of wheat is strongly inhibited by phosphinothricin. As revealed by gel filtration and kinetic studies the mechanism of inhibition appears to be irreversible. The results indicate that the rate limiting step of the reaction of the inhibitor with the chloroplast glutamine synthetase is not the initial, but the following reaction. However, of root glutamine synthetase the irreversible inhibition follows a second order reaction depending on the concentration of the enzyme and of phosphinothricin and the rate limiting step is the formation of the initial enzyme-inhibitor complex. According to the kinetic dat…
Quasimolecular resonances in terms of dipole and quadrupole interacting bosons
1986
The energy spectrum of the /sup 12/C+ /sup 12/C resonances is described with the interacting boson (quadrupole) model. The Hamiltonians corresponding to the three dynamical symmetries and to the general case of the model are used. The results are compared with the similar calculations within the nuclear vibron (dipole) model. Based on the present experimental data no choice can be made between the dipole and quadrupole descriptions, but in both cases the best fit is quite close to the dynamical symmetry corresponding to a soft vibrator.
Squeezing in a two-photon Dicke hamiltonian
1986
Abstract The single-mode, two-level atom Dicke hamiltonian with two-photon atom-field coupling is treated exactly and it is shown to yield a certain degree of squeezing in the field variables. This result is briefly discussed in connection with the previously shown absence of squeezing in the two-photon laser model.

Heterogeneity of osteogenesis imperfecta. Biochemical and morphological findings in a case of type III according to Sillence.
1986
A male infant with pale-blue sclerae, who died at the age of 6 weeks through the aspiration of food, presented multiple fractures and deformation of the long tubular bones. The clinical and radiological findings and the course indicated osteogenesis imperfecta, type III, according to Sillence's classification. The family history was unremarkable. Light and electron microscopic studies of iliac crest bone obtained postmortem, showed an abrupt interruption of endochondral ossification, with an active periosteal ossification. In the region of the fractures, a mixed desmochondral callus was seen. The endoplasmic reticulum of the osteoblasts was markedly dilated, the mitochondria were swollen. T…
Metabolism of 3-nitrophenol by the frog Rana temporaria.
1986
1. Frogs injected with 3-nitrophenol excreted 85–93% of the administered dose within 17h; 70–90% dose was metabolized.2. Metabolites identified comprise 3-nitrophenyl glucuronide (57% dose), 3-nitro-phenyl sulphate (24% dose), and 3-acetamidophenyl sulphate (2% dose). Traces of the following metabolites were found: 3-acetamidophenyl glucuronide, 3-acetamidophenol, 4-nitrocatechol, nitroquinol, 4-nitrocatechol sulphate and nitroquinol sulphate.
An adult life cycle perspective on public subsidies to higher education in three countries
1986
Studies of the incidence of public susidies to higher education have commonly disregarded adjustements to an appropriate age range in the parental reference populations. Even where the need for such adjustements is noted, implications have rarely if ever been systematically analyzed. Moreover, no attention whatsoever seems to have been paid to implications for adult life-cycle experiences let alone secular changes in experiences over successive cohorts. The present paper seeks to fill part of these gaps, drawing on relevant parts of our research on "the political economy of government support of higher education : studies in Chile, France and Malaysia".
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy of Ureteral Stones: Clinical Experience and Experimental Findings
1986
AbstractESWL of impacted ureteral or caliceal stones is not as successful as expected. To study this problem a model for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy of ureteral stones has been designed. After initial fragmentation of the outer shell of impacted stones during the first series of shock wave application those fragments are kept in place by external mucosal contact, creating a lot of new interfaces.Absorption or reflection of shock wave energy within this fragmented shell seems to be responsible for the poor success rate in these cases. In regard to our experimental and clinical results we advise pushing ureteral stones back into the renal collecting system by means of a ureteral cat…
