Sural nerve biopsy studies in leigh's subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy

1986

Peripheral neuropathy marked by reduced nerve conduction velocities was found in four unrelated children, between the ages of 15 months and 9 years, whose autopsies revealed Leigh's subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy. Sural nerve biopsies disclosed primary demyelination and remyelination, as well as loss of myelinated and unmyelinated axons. The use of morphometric and electron microscopic studies shows that these techniques may reveal peripheral neuropathy in Leigh's disease more often than light microscopic methods alone.

On the solution growth of single crystals of solid solutions

1986

Abstract Homogeneous solid solution crystals are needed for studying the behaviour of systems with a glass state or incommensurate phases. A simple solution growth procedure is described. It is based on a temperature difference growth method with thermally enforced convection and the use of equilibrated solid and liquid solutions. First results of its application to the [(CH3)4N]2ZnCl 4−xBrx and the Rb1−x(NH4)xH2PO4 systems are presented.

Financing public higher education in developing countries : the potential role of loan schemes

1986

The financing of education has emerged as a major topic of discussion among policy makers in recent years. There is evidence that in many developing countries, governments can no longer continue to increase spending on education at the high rates characteristic in the 1960s and 1970s. The macroeconomic environment has worsened, and there is keen intersectoral competition for public funds. Thus unless educational development moves away from its present heavy dependence on public funds, the expansion of education would be frustrated. One policy option is to increase the private financing of education. In this paper, we evaluate the potential effectiveness of loans schemes as a cost recovery i…

Inverse behaviour of "synaptic" ribbon and spherule numbers in the pineal gland of male guinea-pigs exposed to continuous illumination.

1986

There is increasing evidence that pineal “synaptic” ribbons are a heterogeneous population of organelles. In addition to “synaptic” ribbons (SR) sensu stricto, which consist of an electron-dense rod surrounded by electronlucent vesicles, “synaptic” spherules (SS) exist, the electrondense core of which is round and much wider than that of the SR. In the guinea-pig SR and SS numbers exhibit an inverse day/night rhythmicity. To gain more insight into the functional significance of SR and SS, guinea-pigs were exposed to continuous illumination for approximately 4 months (LL) and the respective structures in the pineal gland were quantitated under the electron microscope and compared with contro…

On the opioid receptor subtype inhibiting the evoked release of 3H-noradrenaline from guinea-pig atria in vitro

1986

1. Guinea-pig isolated atria were incubated and loaded with 3H-(−)-noradrenaline. The intrinsic nerves were stimulated with trains of 5 or 35 field pulses (4 Hz), and the evoked efflux of 3H-noradrenaline and of total tritium was determined in the presence of atropine, corticosterone, desipramine, and phentolamine by liquid scintillation spectrometry. 2. Ethylketocyclazocine (1.4 nmol/l, IC50), MR 2033 (9.1 nmol/l), dynorphin A (1–13) (25 nmol/l, peptidase inhibitors present), etorphine (71 nmol/l), and [d-Ala2, d-Leu5]-enkephalin (>10 μmol/l, peptidase inhibitors present) inhibited the stimulation-evoked efflux of 3H-noradrenaline in a concentration-dependent manner, but not morphine up to…

Fitting classes ℱ such that all finite groups have ℱ-injectors

1986

Let ℱ be an homomorph and Fitting class such thatEzℱ=ℱ. In this paper we prove that if all ℱ-constrained groups have ℱ-injectors, then all groups have ℱ-injectors. In particular if ℱ is a class of quasinilpotent groups containing the nilpotent groups, then every group has ℱ-injectors.

Increased DHEAs levels in PCO syndrome: evidence for the existence of two subgroups of patients

1986

In 49 patients affected by PCO syndrome the serum levels of dehydroepiandroster-one-sulphate (DHEAs) were determined and correlated with the cfinical presentation and the endocrine pattern. Twenty-three patients (47%) had high DHEAs levels (h-DHEAs patients). They presented a milder clinical presentation (low incidence of amenorrhea) than PCO patients with normal DHEAs levels (n-DHEAs patients). In h-DHEAs patients the finding of a normal DHEAs. response to ACTH and of slightly increased 17OHP serum levels suggested that the elevation of serum DHEAs was not due to an adrenal enzymatic deficiency but to a tonic hyperstimulation of the adrenals. Two subgroups of h-DHEAs patients were identifi…

Search for superheavy elements in damped collisions betweenU238andCm248

1986

Negative results for the production of superheavy elements in damped collisions between $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ projectiles and $^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ targets are reported. This reaction was believed to permit a closer and more widespread approach to the predicted island of stability near Z=114 and N=184 than any practical fusion reaction. Aqueous and gas phase chemistry techniques were used to isolate superheavy element fractions. The fractions were counted for spontaneous fission activity, fragment kinetic energies, and neutron multiplicities. Cross-section limits for half-lives from hours to several years are g4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}35}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{…

1986

Abstract The course of the spontaneous burst activity (BA) of peripheral blood monocytes was examined in patients with acute polyradiculoneuritis (PN), lymphocytic meningoencephalitis (LE), and multiple sclerosis (MS) and the BA was compared with the clinical course. In 4 patients with postinfectious acute PN the BA was significantly increased up to values around 60000 counts/10 s. The BA and the clinical course were closely correlated in these patients (mean of r = 0.83). In 4 patients with lymphocytic LE the BA initially was moderately increased to values between 4000 and 5000 counts/10 s and showed again a very close correlation with the clinical course (mean of r = 0.99) In 13 MS patien…

Anticipating the higher generations of quarks from rephasing invariance of the mixing matrix

1986

Abstract We show that the number of invariant CP violating parameters X CP jumps from the unique universal one in three generations to nine in the four-generation case, saturating the parameter space for generation numbers higher than three. This can lead to drastically different consequences in CP -violating phenomena. We give the quark mass matrices in the three-generation case and speculate for higher generations. We also give some invariant definitions of “maximal” CP violation.

Material transport and organizing phenomena of Langmuir—Blodgett membranes from polymerizable built up diacetylene amphiphiles on hydrophobic supports

1986

Abstract Langmuir—Blodgett multilayers of polymerized diin amphiphiles on different porous, hydrophobic ultrafilters have been studied as composite membranes under the conditions of reverse osmosis. Influences of differently structured surfaces of the supports on structure and phase change occurring during polymerization have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction and are discussed with reverse osmosis data. When conditioned, fine porous hydrophobic supports become permeable to aqueous solutions at low pressures. Under these conditions permeate flux and retention were found to depend on the number of layers deposited.

The aminolysis of diphenyl terephthalate by means of hexylamine was studied in dimethyl sulfoxide as a model reaction for polyamidation. The kinetic analysis showed that the two ester groups of the diphenyl ester do not react independently. Furthermore, the reaction of the first ester group was of mixed second and third order, while the reaction of the second ester group contained only a second order term. The rate constants found were used to determine the Arrhenius activation parameters.

Quantitative electron microscopic observations on Paneth cells of germfree and ex-germfree Wistar rats.

1986

Ultrastructural changes of Paneth cells of germfree (Gf) rats which had been inoculated with bacteria-containing feces from conventionally-reared (SPF) rats were quantitatively examined. 12 and 24 h after inoculation, the Paneth cells showed a striking decrease in the number of secretory granules and the occurrence of large vacuoles. Phagosomes containing bacteria were not seen. After 4 days, the secretory granules reaccumulated and smooth-surfaced apical vesicles increased in number. It is discussed that the large vacuoles may be related to membrane-retrieval events following the massive extrusion of secretory granules whereas the apical vesicles appear to serve this function when exocytos…

A time-differential Mössbauer emission spectrometer with high efficiency and high time resolution

1986

A high-efficiency, high rate-capability, computer-based measuring setup for Time-Differential Mossbauer Spectroscopy was constructed. Applying NaI(Tl) and plastic scintillators for the detection of the 14.4 keV and 122 keV γ-radiation respectively, a superior timing (2, 3 ns FWHM) was achieved by a “fast-fast-ultra fast” timing method developed for that purpose.

Nonlinear stopping power of an electron gas for slow ions

1986

Theoretical calculations of the stopping power of the electron gas for slow ions, v${v}_{F}$, are reviewed. New results are presented for stopping power and effective charge based on nonlinear density-functional calculations. Extensive comparisons with available experimental data show that these new theoretical results are clearly superior to earlier calculations based on linear theory.

Right ventricular volume determination in isolated human hearts

1986

For right ventricular volume determination a new method was developed that took into account right ventricular imaging by apical two-dimensional echocardiography in the four- and two-chamber views. Right ventricular volume was calculated by subtraction of the partial volume of the left ventricle and interventricular septum from the total heart volume of the right and left ventricles including the interventricular septum. Accuracy of the subtraction method was evaluated in isolated human hearts by two-dimensional echocardiography and radiography. Regression analysis indicated that for both the echocardiographic and radiologic procedures, the subtraction method gave the best correlation with …

Classes of orbits in the main problem of satellite theory

1986

We consider the main problem in satellite theory restricted to the polar plane. For suitable values of the energy the system has two unstable periodic orbits. We classify the trajectories in terms of their ultimate behavior with respect these periodic orbits in: oscillating, asymptotic and capture orbits. We study the energy level set and the existence and properties of the mentioned types of motion.

Anodic layers formed on steel in phosphate buffer solution

1986

In-situ gamma scattering and ex-situ conversion electron Mossbauer, and Auger spectroscopy were applied to investigate anodic layers on steel. Samples treated in the active potential range in phosphate buffer solution show a Fe(II)-phosphate deposit on the surface. After treatment in the passive potential region, only Fe3+was found to exist in the oxide layer. The passive layer does not consist of stoichiometric oxidic phases.

On the origins of body size dimorphism in primates

1986

Among many explanations concerning the origins of dimorphism in Primates, none has received as little attention as the differences in energy requirements of the two sexes. It is hypothesised that among Primates, a common strategy for overcoming the extra metabolic load of pregnency and lactation experienced by females during the greater part of their adult lifetimes, is for them to reduce their bodyweights relative to those of males. Such a strategy allows the mother plus infant combination to weight approximately as much as the species target weight or slightly less, preserving the balance between the species and the environment.
