Sarcosinaemia in a retarded, amaurotic child.

A 9-month-old Turkish girl demonstrated an abnormal qualitative amino acid excretion pattern suggestive of sarcosinaemia. She was blind and had evidence of developmental and motor retardation. No other physical abnormalities were noted. Quantitative amino acid analysis revealed elevated serum and urine sarcosine levels. An oral sarcosine loading test showed an exaggerated response with a delayed conversion to glycine. Sarcosine was undetected in other family members.

Sexual dimorphism in primates: Where are we and where do we go from here?

There are currently several debates taking place in palaeoanthropological circles in which the issue of sexual dimorphism is crucial. During the 60th Jubilee of the discovery of the TaungAustralopithecus skull, the authors concurred that much of the debate was due to differences in perception concerning dimorphism, and it was suggested that a study session dealing principally with sexual dimorphism in Primates should be organised with a view to determining what, if anything, could be observed in extant primates that might be utilised for determining the existence of dimorphism in fossil species. Clinical patterns and electrophysiological findings in retinal pigment epithelium diseases. Does a correlation exist?

At present it is difficult to distinguish those human chorioretinal diseases in which the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the primary site of dysfunction. This difficulty is caused by several factors such as scarcity of biochemical and histological information and a lack of correlation of basic science information available with the clinical body of knowledge. In the present study we examined 134 eyes at early or late stages of hereditary diseases involving the RPE. We tried to distinguish primary RPE involvement by using standard ERG (a- and b-wave) and EOG testing. Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity in the guinea pig pineal organ.

Relatively little is known about mammalian pineal neuropeptides. In the present study neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) was examined in the guinea pig pineal gland. NPY-LI was restricted to few intrapineal nerve fibers of faint fluorescence intensity. They showed no preferential localization with regard to the different pineal portions. As catecholaminergic fibers are abundant in the guinea pig pineal gland, the scarcity of NPY-LI fibers indicates that in the pineal colocalization of noradrenaline and NPY-LI is not a regular feature, in contrast to other organs. The possibility exists that in the pineal NPY-LI fibers are not of peripheral sympathetic but of central origin.

We assume that the mammalian neocortex is built up out of some six layers which differ in their morphology and their external connections. Intrinsic connectivity is largely excitatory, leading to a considerable amount of positive feedback. The majority of cortical neurons can be divided into two main classes: the pyramidal cells, which are said to be excitatory, and local cells (most notably the non-spiny stellate cells), which are said to be inhibitory. The form of the dendritic and axonal arborizations of both groups is discussed in detail. A major isozyme of rat heart glutathione transferase was purified to homogeneity by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration, ammonium sulfate precipitation, CM-cellulose chromatography and affinity chromatography on S-hexylglutathione-linked Sepharose 6B. 2. The purified isozyme was a dimer with an apparent relative molecular mass of 50000 composed of two Yb-size subunits (Mr= 26 500). The isozyme is immunologically related to rat liver glutathione transferase X and 3–3, especially closely to transferase X, and no immunological cross-reactivity with subunits 1 and 2 of hepatic glutathione transferases was observed. A case of sjögren's syndrome with severe anemia due to myelitis

An unusual case of Sjögren's syndrome presenting with severe anemia as the predominant clinical feature is described. Histological examination of a bone marrow biopsy specimen demonstrated that the patient's anemia was caused by myelitis and vasculitis of the small intraosseous vessels. Our report might stimulate a more thorough investigation of bone marrow in patients with connective tissue diseases and anemia.

Effects of azadirachtin on reproduction and egg development of the heteropteranOncopeltus fasciatusDallas

Azadirachtin injected into newly hatched adults of Oncopeltus fasciatus affected longevity, fecundity and hatchability of eggs from treated parents. There were marked differences between males and females. Whereas mortality was higher in females, reproduction was interrupted at lower doses in males: 0.125 μg caused impotency. Topical treatment of normal eggs had no demonstrable effect on egg hatch. The studies showed that in respect to a possible use of azadirachtin in insect pest managment, the interruption of reproduction and adult development is of no less importance then growth interruption in larvae (Dorn et al. 1986). Confirmation is given of the classification as dry areas of several parts of central and southern Alacant, the basins of Lliria and Cofrentes in the province of Valencia and the zone surrounding the mouth of the Ebro in Castelló. The effects of carnitine on the growth of sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L., fry

Carnitine treatment has an appreciable effect on the hatchery-reared sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, fry. The administration of the laevorotatory isomer (1-carnitine) which is engaged in the transport of the acyl and acetyl groups through the mitochondrial membrane, stimulating lipid metabolism, increases the growth rate and the protein content of the treated fry. The dextrorotatory isomer (d-carnitine), which is an antagonist of the 1-carnitine, has an opposite effect on the growth and metabolism of the treated fry.

The study of low molecular weight enzyme inhibitors of microbial origin was initiated by Umezawa in 1965 (see Umezawa 1972). Since the discovery of an inhibitor of tyrosine hydroxylase, nearly 50 inhibitors of various enzymes have been found by him; their structures were elucidated and most of the compounds were chemically synthesized (Umezawa 1982). Among them one inhibitor of both aminopeptidase B and the ectoenzyme, leucine aminopeptidase was found in 1976 and was termed bestatin (Fig. 1), [(2S,3R)-3-amino-2-hydroxy 4-phenyl-butanoyl]-(S)-leucine (Umezawa et al. 1976).

Abstract Evidence is presented demonstrating the existence of free dehydrobenzenes in the thermal decomposition of diaryliodonium-2-carboxylates, and that o-benzyne itself and its 4-methyl-, 4-chloro-,4-bromo- and 4-nitro-derivatives are generated from insoluble polymer-bound precursors and trapped by a second solid phase in Diels-Alder reactions. Lifetimes for these elusive species are determined.

The ferroelastic phase transition of (KBr) 0 27 (KNC) 0.73 has been studied by X-ray diffraction, ultrasonics and inelastic neutron scattering. It is the first example of a cubic crystal where the elastic shear constant C 44 softens completely corresponding to the m = 2 universality class. C 44 and the Bragg intensities show a non-classical critical behaviour.

Abstract 1-Phenyl-4-vinylpyrazole reacts with methyl propiolate and N-phenylmaleimide giving via the Diels-Alder 1:1 adducts, products (4) and (8), and also the 1:2 adducts (5), (6) and (9) resulting from an “ene” reaction of the initially forced cycloadducts. The obtention of the adducts (5) and (6) in equimolecular amounts is a good example of the non-regioselective character of the “ene” reaction. The reaction with tetracyanoethylene takes place through the olefinic substituent giving the π2 + π2 adduct (10).

An empirical comparison of cross-impact models for forecasting sales

Abstract This paper compares a set of four cross-impact models: (1) additive, (2) likelihood multiplier, (3) R-space, and (4) a model constructed by the author. This is done by examining a forecasting problem encountered by an industrial firm. The forecasting problem was to study the market trend in order to decide whether to expand the production capacity of a ceramics plant. In spite of their different theoretical premises, the models yielded similar results. However, only the R-space model produced results that differed from the others. The paper also suggests a method that should avoid some internal contradictions of the cross-impact models.
