Determination of DNA single strand breaks and selective DNA amplification by N-nitrodimethylamine and analogs, and estimation of the indicator cells'…
1986
N-nitrodimethylamine is metabolized oxidatively to N-nitrohydroxymethylmethylamine, which decomposes to yield formaldehyde and N-nitromethylamine. All four compounds and N-nitromethylamine were tested for their ability to induce DNA single strand breaks in hepatocytes and in SV 40-transformed Chinese hamster embryo cell lines. Only the two monoalkylnitramines were positive. They induced single strand breaks in hepatocytes, but were not effective in the other cells. Formaldehyde and N-nitrohydroxymethylmethylamine were toxic to the cells. None of the compounds tested was able to induce selective DNA amplification in the two transformed cell lines. Enzymes involved in drug metabolism were ass…
Studies on l-arginase in developing rat small intestine, brain, and kidney
1986
The influences of hydrocortisone and thyroxine on the developmental changes of arginase activity in intestine, kidney, and brain of suckling rats were studied. A single injection of hydrocortisone (50 mg/kg) into rats aged 9 days evoked premature increase of jejunal arginase activity due to precocious formation of arginase A4. Arginase A4 can be detected about 48 hr after hydrocortisone injection, whereas in intact rats the enzyme appears in the intestinal mucosa on the 19th-21st days of postnatal life. After hydrocortisone administration to rats aged 6 days, a similar pattern of arginase activity in jejunum was observed. Under the same conditions, the influence of hydrocortisone on kidney …

Ternary complexes of cimetidine and phenobarbital with Cu(II) in methanolic solution
1986
The formation constants of the binary complexes Cu(CM)2+ and Cu(CM) 2 2+ as well as those of the ternary complexes Cu(CM)L + and Cu(CM)2 L + (CM=Cimetidine=N-Cyano-N′-methyl-N″[(5-methyl-1H-imidazol-4-yl)methyltioethyl]-guanidine; HL=Phenobarbital=5-ethyl-5-phenyl-barbituric acid) have been determined in 0.1 and 1.0 mol dm−3 NaClO4 methanol solutions at 25±0.2°C. The values of logX, log βstat.., and Δ logK confirm the stability of the ternary complexes.
Coincident vesical transitional cell carcinoma and prostatic carcinoma. Clinical features and treatment.
1986
Summary— Twenty-two patients with vesical urothelial carcinoma associated with prostatic carcinoma were reviewed. They represented 1.5% of the bladder and prostatic tumours treated in our department within a 12-year period from 1968 to 1979. Their management included several treatment policies, based on the separate assessment of each tumour variant. For non-infiltrating bladder tumours, transurethral tumour resection was combined with hormonal treatment, external radiotherapy or resection of the prostate depending on the stage of the prostatic tumour. Radical cystoprostatectomy was performed for two cases of infiltrating bladder tumour with well localised prostatic tumours. A conservative …

Moss cell cultures as sources of arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids
1986
AbstractLipid classes from tissue cultures of the moss Leptobryum pyriforme (Hedw.) Wils. were analyzed. In the total lipid fraction, this species contained 20% arachidonic acid and about 7% eicosapentaenoic acid. The distribution of these fatty acids showed a preference for the phospholipid fraction. In particular, the phosphatidylethanolamine fraction was enriched in arachidonic acid. The arachidonic acid content of Leptobryum could be altered by transferring the cultures to different culture conditions. Mosses show high organic mass production in tissue cultures in relatively simple media. The great potential of using mosses as sources for the production of polyunsaturated fatty acids is…
Electronic polarizability of small sodium clusters.
1986
Abstract : Small sodium clusters consisting of 1 to 40 atoms are described as spheres of interacting homogeneous electron gas (jellium model). The static electronic polarizability is calculated using self consistent density functional methods. An excellent agreement with recent experimental results is observed.
Family Activity Patterns as related to the symmetry in the division of labour in the family, children’s socialization to work and the significance of…
1986
The paper is based on empirical material collected in connection with the research project ‘Way of life in the family parental awareness of parenthood, and children’s social development’. The sample consisted of 212 families with both parents and a six-year-old child. It was relatively homogeneous with regard to the educational background of the parents. Comparisons were made between groups of families which differed with regard to (1) symmetry in the division of labour, (2) socialization of children to work, and (3) the relative significance of work vs. family life to the parents. Symmetry in the division of labour was strongly reflected in the family time consumption patterns and their co…

Cyclometallation reactions in complexes of the type Rh(oq)(CO)(P(o-BrC6F4)Ph2)
1986
Abstract The complex [uRh(oq)Br(P( o -Cu 6 F 4 )Ph 2 )(H 2 O)] 2 is obtained by refluxing a solution of Rh(oq)(CO)(P( o -BrC 6 F 4 )Ph 2 ) (oq = 8-oxyquinolinate) in toluene. The structure of this compound has been determined by X-ray diffraction and refined to R = 0.061 and R w = 0.065 factors. The cell has monoclinic symmetry, space group P 2 1 / n ; a 19.513(2), b 17.049(1), c 16.898(1) A and β 99.69(1)°. The structure consists of two independent Rh(oq)Br(P( o -C 6 F 4 )Ph 2 )H 2 O) units linked by hydrogen bonds between the coordinated water molecules and oq ligands to form a distorted boat (six atom ring of junction between the two units). In each unit the metal atom has a distorted oc…
Release of endogenous 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine and its metabolites from the isolated neurointermediate lobe of the rat pituitary gland. Effects …
1986
: Isolated rat neurointermediate lobes were incubated in vitro. The release of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine (dopamine, DA), dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), homovanillic acid (HVA), and methoxyphenylethanol (MOPET) was determined by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Under resting conditions, the outflow of metabolites was 35–50 times that of DA. HVA accounted for 50%, DOPAC for 45%, and MOPET for 5% of the metabolites. Although an equivalent of 40–50% of the tissue DA content was released per hour as metabolites, the tissue DA content was not reduced after 110 min of incubation. The spontaneous outflow of DA and its metabolites was not affected by the DA uptake inhibitor GBR 12921 (1…
Double-quantum nutations in a two-level spin system
1986
The transient oscillatory behavior of the nonlinear response of a two-level electron-spin system is experimentally investigated in a sample of glassy silica with ${E}_{1}^{\mathcal{'}}$ centers (S=(1/2)) at microwave frequency at T=4.2 K. The transient regime, excited by an intense step-modulated radiation tuned to double-quantum (DQ) resonance, is monitored by revealing the second-harmonic (SH) wave radiated by the spins undergoing DQ transitions. Time- and frequency-domain results show that the emitted SH wave has two components: the former, which vanishes at the DQ resonance, exhibits an overdamped transient regime, the latter consists of damped oscillations at a frequency which depends …
Results of the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD)
1986
Since 1980, when we developed substitute for the internal anal sphicter, the smooth-muscle fold-over double-plasty (SMFD-plasty), we have operated on seven children using this method, usually in combination with the pull-through procedure, and on five children after one or more previous operations. Since 1983, 11 cases with previous operations have undergone the modified “door-wing” SMFD-plasty. The results are excellent if the operation is used in primary combination with the pull-through procedure or if the “door-wing” modification is combined with reconstruction of the pelvic floor. It is also necessary that all cases undergo a biofeedback conditioning program.

Kinetics of the Formation of Ordered Domains on Surfaces: Theoretical Considerations and Monte-Carlo Simulation
1986
When an adsorbed monolayer which initially is in a disordered state is suddenly brought to a temperature in the regime of the ordered phase, domains of the ordered phase are predicted to form and grow with time t after the quench according to a power law, i.e. linear dimension L(t) ∞ tx. At the same time, the structure function S(k,t) is predicted to satisfy a scaling law, S(k,t) = S(k,tx), k being the difference between the wave vector observed in the scattering and the Bragg wave vector describing the long range order. The theoretical ideas which lead to this behaviour are briefly reviewed, and evidence from simulations of simple lattice gas models and Potts models is presented. Particula…
Wavelength discrimination in the goldfish
1986
Wavelength discrimination was measured in three goldfish using a behavioral training technique. TheΔλ function has three minima which indicate spectral ranges of high discrimination ability: at 410–420 nm, at 500 nm and at 600–610 nm (Fig. 5). The best discrimination of all was found at 500 nm:Δλ as low as 4 nm. Model computations were performed to find out whether theΔλ function can be explained on the basis of the cone sensitivity functions. The results (Figs. 6 and 7) indicate that the high discrimination ability at 600–610 nm can be explained under the assumption that the long-wave cone mechanism is modified by neural interactions. The high discrimination at 410–420 nm. indicates the ex…
Collinear two-photon excitation of indium rydberg states in a fast atomic beam

Boundary angles, cusps and conformal mappings
1986
Let f be a conformal mapping of a bounded Jordan domain D in the complex plane onto the unit disk . This paper examines the consequences for the local geometry of D near a boundary point z 0 of the mapping f-or, to be more precise, of the homeomorphic extension of this mapping to the closure of D—satisfying a Holder condition at z 0 or, alternatively, of its inverse satisfying a Holder condition at the point f(z 0). In particular, the compatibility of Holder conditions with the presence of cusps in the boundary of D is investigated.
Collinear laser spectroscopy on108g, 108m In using an ion source with bunched beam release
1986
The hyperfine structure and isotope shift of108gIn and108mIn have been investigated by means of collinear fast-beam laser spectroscopy in the resonance line atλ=451 nm. The indium isotopes were prepared at the GSI on-line mass separator following a fusion evaporation reaction. For the first time, a FEBIAD ion source with bunched release of indium was used. Magnetic dipole moments, electric quadrupole moments and isotope shifts were determined. The present results lead us to assign the spinI=2 to the108In (T 1/2=40 min) state. Spins and moments are discussed in the framework of thejj-coupling model.

Eleccion de variables en regresion lineal un problema de decision
1986
A general structure for the problem of selection of variables in regression is proposed using the decision theory framework. In particular, some results for the choice of the best linear normal homocedastic model are obtained when the main purpose is either to specify the predictive distribution over the response variable or to obtain a point estimate of it. A comparison of our results with the most widespread classical ones is presented
The growth of atomically rough 4He crystals
1986
We have studied the growth of atomically rough bcc and hcp4He crystals from the superfluid phase for temperaturesT>0.9 K. The growth coefficient displays a temperature dependence which can be represented bym 4 K∝ $$e^{\Delta E/k_B T} $$ . The parameter ΔE is found to be in close agreement with the energy gap of rotons, suggesting that these thermal excitations dominate the growth kinetics. Besides, the absolute value of the growth coefficient depends on crystal orientation, with an anisotropy for the hcp phase of about a factor of 2.5 between the $$\left\{ {10\bar 10} \right\}$$ and {0001} planes.
Nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of chromium compounds in rats
1986
The nephrotoxic, hepatotoxic and cardiotoxic actions of hexavalent chromium compounds, as well as their effects on lung, blood and circulation may contribute to the fatal outcome of chromium intoxication. Although trivalent chromium have been regarded as relatively biologically inert, there are a few salts of chromium III that have been found to be carcinogenic when inhaled, ingested or brought in contact with the tissues. Sensitive persons and industry workers have been subjects of dermatitis, respiratory tract injuries and digestive ulcers due to chromium compounds. In this work, the authors have studied the effect of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds on rats measuring the trans…
Characterization of choline efflux from the perfused heart at rest and after muscarine receptor activation.
1986
The resting efflux of choline from perfused chicken hearts varied from 0.4 to 2.6 nmol/g min, but was constant for at least 80 min in the individual experiments. The rate of choline efflux was found to be equal to the rate of choline formation in the heart, which, from the following reasons, was essentially due to hydrolysis of choline phospholipids. Cardiac content of choline phospholipids (7,200 nmol/g) was much higher than that of acetylcholine (5.5 nmol/g). Resting release of acetylcholine was 0.016 nmol/g min and, after inhibition of cholinesterase, only about 0.1 nmol/g min. Resting efflux of choline was reduced by mepacrine, a phospholipase A2 inhibitor, by perfusion with a Ca2+-free…
Surface interaction of Ni/Mo oxides on ultrastable Y zeolites
1986
The interactions of NiO, MoO 3 and their mixtures with the acid surface of an H-Y ultrastable zeolite have been studied on a series of samples. These samples were prepared by impregnation, calcination and reduction, (if necessary), of Ni and Mo salts, on an H-Y ultrastable zeolite (HYUS). By using i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques it has been observed that MoO 3 interacts with most of the hydroxyl groups while NiO interacts only with those appearing at 3640 and 3550 cm −1 . In the samples containing both oxides a strong interaction between them is shown, while the acidity of the original HYUS is partially regenerated. The influence of the order of impregnation on the final …
Ultrasonographical aspects of urinary schistosomiasis: Assessment of morphological lesions in the upper and lower urinary tract
1986
Ultrasonographic evaluation of 213 patients with urinary schistosomiasis in different age groups was performed in an endemic area of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The results were compared with 94 age matched controls without urinary schistosomiasis. In patients the bladder showed thickening of the wall, polypoid lesions of the mucosa and bladder wall, calcifications and urinary retention. Urinary tract obstruction, predominantly unilateral, was demonstrated. The lesions increased in severity with the intensity of infection, parallel to an increase in ova excretion. Children aged between 8 and 19 years were most severely affected. Pathological lesions of the upper urinary tract were rar…

Occurrence of Yersinia ruckeri infection in farmed whitefish, Coregonus peled Gmelin and Coregonus muksun Pallas, and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.…
1986
Yersinia ruckeri, the aetiological agent of enteric redmouth disease (ERM), is now generally recognized to be distributed worldwide. The pathology and epizootiology of the disease was first described by Rucker (1966) and although rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, has been the most frequently affected species, all salmonids are now considered to be potential hosts for the organism (McDaniel 1979). The present paper reports the first confirmed occurrence of Y. ruckeri infection in farmed whitefish and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., in Finland, with the known host range being extended to include the whitefish Coregonus peled Gmelin and Coregonus muksun Pallas . The outbreaks of infe…

Poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA), poly(butylmethacrylate) (PBMA), and poly(decylmethacrylate) (PDMA) are completely miscible with toluene at normal pressure from room temperature up to the boiling point of the solvent. In alkanes (C6 to C10) and 1-pentanol the solubility increases with the length of the side chain of the polymer: PMMA always exhibits a solubility gap within the above temperature range, PBMA shows upper critical solution temperatures (except n-hexane, which is a non-solvent), and PDMA mixes completely with all alkanes under consideration. Alcohols (up to C4) are non-solvents for PMMA but theta solvents for PBMA and PDMA (except ethanol which is a non-solvent for the latter). …
Modification of Peripheral Blood T-Lymphocyte Surface Receptors and Langerhans Cell Numbers in Hereditary Angioedema
1986
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a disease related to a complement disorder, namely a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor. Complement-split products are implicated in the regulation of the immune response, and we have compared some immunologic parameters between HAE and normal individuals. T-lymphocytes with receptors for IgG were increased in HAE, but no difference in T-cell suppressor activity for B-cells was detected. Furthermore, increased IgG receptor expression was not accompanied by any significant changes in the ratios of OKT4- and OKT8-defined antigens. Numbers of peripheral mononuclear cells (MNC) detected by alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase (ANAE) staining positivity were not signif…

The use of mathematical models in the characterization of ethylene oxide condensate Surfactants by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy
1986
A topological treatment of the surfactant molecules (DARC system) and a group contribution model were applied to study the correlation between structures of ethylene oxide condensates with nonylsphenol and tert-octylphenol and their spectral characteristics such as extinction coefficient of the molecular absortion band. Using the experimental values of the spectral characteristics of an unknown smaple of an ethylene oxide condensate surfactant and the information parameters, previously determined by the mathematical treatment of a key population, it is possible to obtain their average condensation degree.
