Pharmacological investigation into the effects of histamine and histamine analogues on guinea-pig and rat colon in vitro.

1986

The effects of histamine and specific histamine agonists has been examined on isolated longitudinal colon strips of guinea-pig and rat. Histamine and 2-pyridyl-ethylamine but not 4 methylhistamine produced a concentration-related contractile response in the guinea-pig colon. The H1-antagonist clemizole antagonized competitively the effect of histamine but the H2-antagonist ranitidine did not modify the dose-response curve to histamine in the guinea-pig colon. Atropine, hexamethonium, prazosin and propranolol failed to modify the contractile response to histamine. Tone induced with KCl in guinea-pig isolated colon was not modified by histamine agonists even in tissues pretreated with clemizo…

Relations between basal ganglia and hippocampus: Action of substantia nigra and pallidum

1986

Several interrelationships exist between basal ganglia and hippocampus. The ventral striatum appears to be involved in the control of the dopaminergic nigro-striatal pathway. The caudate, in turn, seems to influence the hippocampal theta rhythm and to inhibit hippocampal spikes. In the present work the role played by globus pallidus pars interna and substantia nigra pars compacta on hippocampal bioelectrical activity is studied. Injection of sodium penicillin i.v. produces steady interictal spikes in the hippocampus. Substantia nigra stimulation induces regular theta rhythm and inhibits the spikes. Pallidal stimulation, on the contrary, appears to strongly enhance epileptiform activity, pro…

Expression of glial filament protein (GFP) in nerve sheaths and non-neural cells re-examined using monoclonal antibodies, with special emphasis on th…

1986

We describe two novel monoclonal antibodies specific for glial filament protein (GFP), i.e., GF12.23 and GF12.24 (both IgG2a]. These cross-react over a broad range of species with epitopes located in the alpha-helical rod domain typical of all intermediate filament (IF) proteins. These monoclonal antibodies were used, in conjunction with other monoclonal GFP antibodies, rabbit antiserum to GFP, and various antibodies to other cytoskeletal proteins, to examine the occurrence of GFP in cells outside of the central nervous system of rodents, cows, and humans. We detected some scattered GFP-containing cells in the neural sheaths in some species but not in others, and we obtained different resul…

Insertion mutation inactivates the expression of the recessive oncogene lethal(2)giant larvae of Drosophila melanogaster

1986

The Drosophila recessive oncogene lethal(2)giant larvae is located at the extreme left end of the second chromosome close to telomeric repetitive sequences. Of the 20 l(2)gl mutant alleles isolated from wild flies in widespread populations of the Soviet Union and California, all but two appear to represent large deletions which have removed the telomeric repetitive sequences and l(2)gl single copy sequences (Mechler et al. 1985). We have analyzed the structure of the two exceptions: the l(2)glGB52 mutation results from the insertion of a single transposable element of the B104 or roo family, whereas the more complex rearrangements of the l(2)glDV275 mutation consists of an 8 kb interstitial…

Recent trends of urban development and town planning in Spain

1986

With the socio-economic change from rural to industrial, Spain has experienced an enormous urbanisation boom during the last 20 years. This has produced a concentration of high-rise apartment blocks not only in the big cities but also in medium-sized towns and even within the medieval town centres. More astonishing, compared with Central Europe, seems however, the spatial distribution of the social classes which, with a centre-periphery gradient, still corresponds to the model of the pre-industrial town. The paper investigates the impact of town planning, house building policy, and behavioural aspects on these structural patterns.

Detection performance of normal cats and those lacking areas 17 and 18: a behavioral approach to analyse pattern recognition deficits.

1986

The ability of cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical area 17 and parts of area 18. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio for the parameters: noise bandwidth, spatial frequency content and rate of movement of patterns. In both normal and lesioned cats a broadband noise was found to be most effective in masking the large patterns while two other types of noise, a medium frequency noise and a high frequency noise had little or no masking effect. For recognition of the smaller patterns in normal cats the medium fre…

Somatic Embryogenesis and Plant Regeneration from Hypocotyl Cultures of Digitalis obscura L.

1986

Summary Hypocotyl sections from 20-day-old seedlings of Digitalis obscura L. were used to examine the effect of IAA on somatic embryogenesis. Although embryogenesis was obtained with all IAA concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1 ppm) and under both illumination conditions tested (16 h photoperiod and darkness), incubation in photoperiod increased yield of embryos and shortened the embryo induction time. Optimum results were obtained with 1 ppm IAA. About 30 % of the embryos obtained developed into complete plantlets when transferred to basal medium without growth regulators.

Wine analysis: Study and comparison of techniques developed for the study of volatile constituents

1986

A number of headspace techniques have been compared, using a standard solution containing 12 compounds and a wine sample, viz.: (1) purge and cold trap injection; (2) dynamic headspace combined with liquidliquid extraction; (3) static headspace with and without preconcentration; (4) direct liquid injection. The sensitivity, reproducibility and speed of analysis were determined. Considering the results obtained and dependent on the purpose of the experiments and the number of samples to be examined the appropriate technique can be selected. ?? 1980 Friedr. Augmented glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity and normal penetration and metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone in mononuclear leukocytes in pso…

1986

The aim of the study was to determine a biochemical basis for the augmented oxidative metabolism found in mononuclear leukocytes (MNL) of patients with active psoriasis. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is known to inhibit glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH). We determined the activity of G-6-PDH as well as the penetration and metabolism of DHEA - diminished plasma concentrations of which have been found in psoriatics previously - in 16 patients with active psoriasis and 16 controls. MNL in patients with psoriasis possessed 52% more (p less than 0.05) G-6-PDH activity, based on cell number, and 34% more (p less than 0.05) activity, based on soluble protein. No difference in DHEA penetr…

Activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes of skeletal muscle in neuromuscular diseases.

1986

The activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes, as well as of 2 hydrolases were studied in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with neuromuscular diseases and from 15 controls. The activity of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase was higher in patients with congenital myotonia, whereas in the other diagnostic groups this enzyme activity was the same as in the controls. The Se-independent and total glutathione peroxidase activity of patients in the various diagnostic groups did not differ from the controls. Moreover, no difference were observed in catalase activity between the patient groups and the controls. The activities of the rate limiting…

Acid Carboxypeptidases in Grains and Leaves of Wheat, Triticum aestivum L

1986

Extracts of resting and germinating (3 days at 20 degrees C) wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Ruso) grains rapidly hydrolyzed various benzyloxycarbonyldipeptides (Z-dipeptides) at pH 4 to 6. Similar activities were present in extracts of mature flag leaves. Fractionation by chromatography on CM-cellulose and on Sephadex G-200 showed that the activities in germinating grains were due to five acid carboxypeptidases with different and complementary substrate specificities. The wheat enzymes appeared to correspond to the five acid carboxypeptidases present in germinating barley (L Mikola 1983 Biochim Biophys Acta 747: 241-252). The enzymes were designated wheat carboxypeptidases I to V and their …

Reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid

1986

In order to investigate the pharmacological screening of a number of pyran-4-ones their synthesis by cyclization with sulphuric acid of the corresponding 1,3,5-triketones has been carried out with high yields. In the course of preparation of the latter the reaction of 2-acetyltetralone with some esters of benzoic acid derivatives has been studied and in particular, for a number of them, an interesting nucleophilic substitution of a chlorine atom with an alkoxy group on a benzenic nucleus has been evidenced.

Collagen metabolism of mouse skeletal muscle during the repair of exercise injuries.

1986

The activities of prolyl 4-hydroxylase and beta-glucuronidase, the concentration of hydroxyproline as well as reticulin and collagen type III, IV and V stainings were followed in skeletal muscle during a 20-day period after a 9-h treadmill running in untrained and trained male mice, aged 4-6 months. The prolonged 9-h running of untrained mice temporarily increased prolyl 4-hydroxylase activity 2, 5 and 10 days after exercise, more prominently in the red than in the white part of quadriceps femoris-muscle, and in analogical manner as beta-glucuronidase activity in tibialis anterior-muscle. Twenty days after exercise these enzymatic activities were back to the control level. The hydroxyprolin…

Xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes of rat liver nonparenchymal cells.

1986

Abstract The nonparenchymal cells (NPC) of the liver are primarily located along the sinusoids and therefore are the first cells to encounter blood-borne xenobiotics. To study the possible role of the NPC in the metabolism of xenobiotics, populations of NPC and parenchymal cells (PC) were prepared from rats and various xenobiotic metabolizing enzyme activities investigated. The specific activity of every enzyme studied (ethoxyresorufin deethylase, benzphetamine demethylase, glutathione transferase, UDP glucuronosyltransferase, and microsomal epoxide hydrolase) was 12 to 1000% higher in the PC than in the NPC populations and the patterns of activities between the two populations were remarka…

The Mainz Pouch (Mixed Augmentation Ileum and Cecum) for Bladder Augmentation and Continent Diversion

1986

The ideal urinary reservoir constructed from bowel material should be a low-pressure system with a high capacity, capable of preventing upper tract deterioration resulting from ureteral obstruction or reflux. It should achieve reliable control of continence and assure easy emptying of the reservoir. In the Mainz-pouch, the combination of cecum and ileum, the latter of which is able to absorb pressure waves created by the cecum, produces a low-pressure system with a high capacity immediately postoperatively. By incorporating large bowel in our pouch, ureteral implantation can be done using a simple and reliable standard antireflux technique with a submucosal tunnel. The Mainz-pouch has been …

SUPERFIELDS AND CANONICAL METHODS IN SUPERSPACE

1986

We consider the “supersymmetric roots” of the Heisenberg evolution equation as describing the dynamics of superfields in superspace. We investigate the superfield commutators and their equal time limits and exhibit their noncanonical character even for free superfields. For simplicity, we concentrate on the D=1 case, i.e., the superfield formulation of supersymmetric quantum mechanics in the Heisenberg picture and, as a soluble example, the supersymmetric oscillator. Finally, we express Noether’s theorem in superspace and give the definition of the global conserved supercharges.

Anisotropic Heisenberg chain with composite spin

1986

A family of one-dimensional magnetic Hamiltonians is introduced, where at each site there are $n$ spin-$S$ operators. It is shown that, for special couplings between spins and for $S=\frac{1}{2}$, the model contains the complete spectrum of the Heisenberg chain with spins \textonehalf{}, 1, frac32;, etc., and the ground state is that of the corresponding Heisenberg chain. By the varying of a single parameter the model allows continuous transitions between chains with different spin. We map the spin-($S+S$) model onto the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ model and discuss the possibility of a finite gap in the spin-(\textonehalf{}+\textonehalf{}) model.

F-Wave study in patients with chronic renal failure on regular haemodialysis

1986

Motor nerve conduction along the entire length of ulnar and tibialis posterior nerves was studied in 30 uraemic patients and in 20 control subjects. The M and F latencies, MNCV (between the stimulus sites), FWCV (between the spinal cord and the stimulus sites) and F-ratio (conduction time ratio of proximal to distal segment) were assessed to evaluate the conduction in the proximal versus the distal nerve segment. In the uraemic patients, the slowing of nerve conduction involved both segments of the tested nerves to the same extent. In fact, the F-ratio did not show any significant difference between the two groups; in only one patient was its value lower than the normal limit in the tibiali…

Isolation and Characterization of an Fe(III)-Chelating Compound Produced by Pseudomonas syringae

1986

The phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae produces a fluorescent pigment when it is grown in iron-deficient media. This pigment forms a very stable Fe(III) complex that was purified in this form by using a novel procedure based on ultrafiltration and column chromatography. The Fe(III) complex has a molecular weight of 1,100 and contains 1 mol of Fe(III). The pigment is composed of an amino acid moiety with three threonines, three serines, one lysine, δ- N -hydroxyornithine, and a quinoline-type fluorescent chromophore. These features and its stability constant (in the range of 10 32 ) suggest that the fluorescent pigment of P. syringae is related to the siderophores produced by an…

A model-independent multipole analysis of $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$(e,e'p) and $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$(e,e'\ensuremath{\alpha}) coincidence data, taken at three momentum transfers 0.39lql0.68 ${\mathrm{fm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$, yields both E1 and E2/E0 form factors and the respective multipole strength distributions in the giant-resonance region of $^{28}\mathrm{Si}$ (${E}_{x}$=14--22 MeV). While the deduced E1 strength agrees well with previous results, the total extracted E2/E0 strength is about twice the value found with isoscalar projectiles indicating the presence of large isovector E2/E0 contributions in the region of the isoscalar E2/E0 giant resonances.

Antiplatelet effects of intravenous iloprost in patients with peripheral arterial obliterative disease

1986

The dose-dependent inhibition of platelet aggregation by the chemically stable, prostacyclin-mimetic, iloprost, was studied in patients suffering from stage II-III peripheral arterial obliterative disease (PAOD). The study was designed as a randomized placebo-controlled cross-over trial. Iloprost was administered i.v. to six patients at doses of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0 ng/kg X min for 4 h, with an interval of 2-3 days between the infusions. During iloprost infusion, systolic and diastolic arterial blood pressure, heart rate and blood flow in the affected limb remained unchanged. In contrast, there was a considerable, dose-dependent inhibition of ADP- and thrombin-induced platelet aggregation a…

A Molecular Dynamics Study of the Structure of an Aqueous KC1 Solution

1986

A molecular dynamics simulation of a 2.2 molal aqueous KCl solution has been performed using the ST2 water model. The simulation extended over 5ps at an average temperature of 288 K. The basic box has a side length of 18.74 A and contained 200 water molecules, 8 cations and 8 anions. The structure of the solution is discussed by radial distribution functions, the orientation of the water molecules, and their geometrical arrangement in the first hydration shells. The first shells of K+ and Cl- extend up to 3.52 and 3.84 A, respectively, with the corresponding hydration numbers 7.8 and 7.6. The results are compared with recent neutron and X-ray diffraction data and with findings of previous M…

Economic crisis and educational crisis : looking ahead

1986

The worldwide economic crisis has now been with us for a good ten years and, for many countries, the end of the tunnel is not yet in sight and is probably a long way off. So what kind of crisis is this, that can continue for so long, given the fact that, etymologically, the term denotes a brief, crucial moment when the outcome of a troubled situation is decided, for better or for worse? Infelicitous as the term commonly used to describe the present state of the world economy may be, it is none the less true that what is designated as a crisis encompasses a historical phase in which economic growth is lower than in the preceding phase and the problems bound up with certain economic trends (i…
