The resting efflux of choline into the perfusate (Tyrode's solution) of isolated hearts was equal to the rate, at which choline was liberated from phospholipid degradation (Lindmar et al. 1986). Infusion of isoprenaline (2 X 10(-7) mol/l), forskolin (1-3 X 10(-6) mol/l) or 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX; 3 X 10(-4) mol/l) for 40 min markedly enhanced the efflux of choline. The increase was linear during the experimental period and, in the case of isoprenaline, was blocked by 3 X 10(-7) mol/l atenolol. The interdigestive plasma motilin concentrations were evaluated in 13 over-65 healthy adults with no evidence of significant disease and in 19 younger individuals. Plasma motilin levels were determined every 15 min during a 3-hr fasting period, using a radioimmunological method. The individual median values of plasma motilin concentrations during the entire study period were significantly higher in aged than younger adults. Summary Reaction of LiGePh2GePh3 with Cl2GePh2 at −65°C in ether yields n-Ge5Ph12 as the main product, in addition to shorter-chained polygermanes. The analysis of the resulting products and the isolation of the pentagermane was done by HPLC. The crystal structure was determined (R = 0.095). The conformation of the Ge5 chain is antiperiplanar-anticlinal (−179.3 and +114.4°) with mean Ge-Ge distances of 247.6 (central) and 244.3 pm (terminal).

On the discrimination of spatial intervals by the blind cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani).

The performance of the blind cave fish in discriminating spatial intervals was investigated. The fish had to discriminate between pairs of grids consisting of equidistant vertical bars. The intervals between the bars on the grid to be chosen were kept constant while the intervals between the bars on the other grid were altered in steps so as to become gradually closer to the interval between the bars on the grid to be chosen. It was found that the fish were still able to discriminate between the two grids when the difference between the bar intervals amounted to at least 1.5 mm. Spaltpatienten haben eine geringere Frustrationstoleranz, sie scheinen weniger in der Lage zu sein, sich mit Gelassenheit uber Konfliktsituationen hinwegzusetzen. A clinical epidemiological survey of Legionella pneumophila infections occurring in Italy between 1 December 1985 and 31 May 1986 was carried out to evaluate the incidence of sporadic, epidemic and nosocomial L. pneumophila pneumonia. A total of 355 cases of pneumonia were studied of which 11.5% were due to Gram positive bacteria, 11% were due to Gram negative bacteria, 7.9% were due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, 4.5% were due to L. pneumophila and 8.5% were due to sundry aetiological agents. Abstract Three numerical algorithms capable of simulating transport processes through simple, porous membranes in the steady state have been employed in order to study the change in the diffusion potential with the membrane thickness and the ionic concentrations for the ternary systems NaClHClH20 and CaCI2NaC1H 2 O. The first simulation procedure uses Poisson's equation, the two others replace this equation by the electroneutrality and Goldman constant-field approximations respectively. From the results presented here, conditions for the applicability of the electroneutrality and constantfield assumption to ternary electrolyte systems are given.

High-resolution real-time sonography was performed in 15 cases of clinically and chemically suspected primary hyperparathyroidism and in 20 patients with different thyroid nodules. The suspected enlarged parathyroid glands and the thyroid nodules were percutaneously punctured under sonographic control. Concentrations of parathyroid hormone, human thyroglobulin, and human calcitonin were measured in the aspirate, and immunocytology was performed. Effects of fatigue produced by a maintained 60% isometric loading on electromyographic and isometric force-time and relaxation-time characteristics of human skeletal muscle were studied in 21 males accustomed to strength training. Fatigue loading resulted in a slight but not significant change in the maximal integrated EMG of a maximal isometric contraction, and a large decrease (20.4 +/- 6.3%, p less than 0.001) in maximal force.
