Infection of murine hepatocyte cultures by herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1 and 2

A study was undertaken of the interaction between liver cells and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) in vitro. Hepatocytes were obtained from HSV-resistant (C57/B16) and from HSV-susceptible (BALB/c, A/J, C3H) mouse strains and cultured according to standard methods. Each culture was infected with several strains of HSV-type 1 or of HSV-type 2, respectively. The multiplicity of infection was 5. Metabolic changes induced by combined prolonged exercise and low-calorie intake in man

Thirteen middle-aged women and 10 men walked 344 km during 7 days. The daily walking distances were 57, 53, 67, 53, 41, 36, and 37 km at an average speed of 3.5 km X h-1. During the hike the subjects drank water, mineral drinks, and juices ad libitum. Except for some natural products, no food intake was allowed. During the hike the body weight and serum protein concentration of the subjects decreased by about 7%, on average. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol decreased drastically, about 30-40% during the hike, but HDL-cholesterol showed a tendency to increase, giving a 40% increment in HDL/total cholesterol ratio. The use of aqueous/organic emulsions is shown to give advantages in the AAS determination of Cu and Fe extracted as their pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate complexes into methyl isobutyl ketone. The emulsions are more stable than the extracts, and the standards can be prepared from aqueous solutions by emulsification, but without extraction.

Abstract Bis(triorganometal) and diorganometal 1,3-dithiolates (R3M)2(C6H3XS2) (C6H5XS2 1,3-dithiobenzene (for X = H) or 1,3-dithio-4-chlorobenzene (for X = Cl); M = Sn, X = Cl, R = CH3, C6H5; M = Pb, X = H, Cl, R = CH3, C2H5) and R2M(C6H3XS2) (R = CH3, C2H5, C6H5; M = Sn, X = Cl; M = Pb, X = H, Cl) have been prepared as the first organometal IVB derivatives of 1,3-dithiols, and investigated by vibrational, 1H NMR, and (in the case of organotin compounds) Mossbauer spectroscopy. The triorganometal derivatives are monomeric and the diorganometal derivatives dimeric in solution (37° C). For the latter a twelve-membered ring structure is proposed for both solution and the solid state.

The structure of mixed diesters of three 2,2′-methylenediphenols with crotonic acid and methacrylic acid was studied by 13C NMR-spectroscopy. The position of the two acyl groups, expected from the synthetic pathway, was unambiguously confirmed by comparison with the corresponding mono- and diesters containing the same acyl group. In the same way, it was shown that the crotonoyl residue is not involved in the radical polymerisation of these esters.

Three cases with renal angiomyolipoma in Bourneville's disease are reported. In two patients advanced renal insufficiency developed, one being treated by chronic intermittent hemodialysis. In the third patient rupture of angiomyolipoma with severe retroperitoneal bleeding occurred. In one patient, tumorous enlargement initially was diagnosed only in the right kidney and preceded angiomyolipoma of the left kidney for several years. The igneous rocks of the Pongola Supergroup (PS) and Usushwana Intrusive Suite (UIS) represent a case of late Archaean continental magmatism in the southeastern part of the Kaapvaal craton of South Africa and Swaziland. U-Pb dating on zircons from felsic volcanic rocks of the PS yields a concordia intercept age of 2940 ± 22Ma that is consistent with a Sm-Nd whole rock age of 2934 ± 114Ma determined on the PS basalt-rhyolite suite. The initial eNd of−2.6 ± 0.9 is the lowest value so far reported for Archaean mantle-derived rocks. Depth of alveolar bone dehiscences in relation to gingival recessions.

Dehiscence depths were measured in vivo during surgical treatment of 113 teeth with gingival recession in 27 subjects. The average dehiscence depth determined was 5.43 mm with an average recession depth of 2.67 mm. Statistical evidence of a correlation between recession depth and dehiscence depth (average distance between lowest point of recession and dehiscence = 2.8 mm) leaves 16 affected teeth (n = 113) with a distance of 4 mm or more (up to a maximum of 7.5 mm) between the gingival margin and the alveolar crest (facial) unaccounted for. The significance of these deviations from mean values in the etiology and prognosis of recessions is discussed.

Various aspects of neuromuscular, anaerobic, and aerobic performance capacity were investigated in four powerlifters, seven bodybuilders, and three wrestlers with a history of specific training for several years. The data (means +/- SD) showed that the three subject groups possessed similar values for maximal isometric force per unit bodyweight (50.7 +/- 9.6, 49.3 +/- 4.1, and 49.3 +/- 10.9 N/kg, respectively). An apparatus is presented for the precise measurement of vapour pressures. It is tested with diethyl ether and applied to the system tert-butyle acetate/polystyrene (weight-average molecular weight Mw = 110000) up to polymer concentrations of ca. 60 wt.-% in the temperature range from 10 to 90°C; by means of the Redlich-Kister equation the results can well be described analytically. The data are evaluated to yield the Flory-Huggins parameter in the subsequent article in conjunction with other experimental information.

Wahrend einer sechswochigen Lagerung bei 4 °C wurden die Proben in regelmasigen Abstanden sensorisch bewertet und ihr pH-Wert bestimmt. Den Amingehalt ermittelten wir mit Hilfe der Capillar-Gaschromatographie. Die Aminkonzentrationen blieben bis zum deutlichen Verderb am Ende der sechsten Woche im Bereich der Anfangswerte von etwa 0,08 mg/ 100 g.

LONG-ACTING AND SELECTIVE SUPPRESSION OF GROWTH HORMONE SECRETION BY SOMATOSTATIN ANALOGUE SMS 201-995 IN ACROMEGALY

In 6 of 7 acromegalic patients a single subcutaneous injection of 50 micrograms of a new octapeptide somatostatin analogue (SMS 201-995) reduced serum growth hormone (GH) from 30 +/- 12 ng/ml to 1.4 +/- 0.4 (mean +/- SEM). Serum GH remained below basal concentration for 9 h. In the remaining patient who had very high basal preprandial serum GH, SMS 201-995 produced a reduction in serum GH of only 20%. Plasma glucose concentrations were increased to the upper limits of the normal range when a high-carbohydrate meal was consumed 2 h after injection. Eleven international jumpers and throwers engaged in year round training were divided into experimental (n = 6) and control (n = 5) groups. The experimental group was tested before and after a 3 weeks simulated hypergravity period, and again 4 weeks after the hypergravity period. The high gravity condition was created by wearing a vest weighing about 13% of the subjects body weight. By means of data from critical demixing and vapour pressure measurements and by inverse gas chromatography, including the results of published light scattering measurments, a consistent picture is obtained for the entire dependence of the Flory-Huggins parameter χ on the weight fraction w2 of the polymer and on the temperature T for the system tert-butyl acetate/polystyrene. Within the entire T-range (ca. 0°C – 140°C), χ increases stronger than exponentially with w2, the rise being the larger the larger χH (the enthalpy contribution to χ) becomes in the limit of infinite dilution. Abstract It is shown that the existence of majorons, which enable a heavy neutrino, 500 eV ≲ mνH ≲ 25 keV to decay into a light neutrino mνL ≲ 8 eV and a majoron, with lifetime 104 yr ≲ τνH ≲ 108 yr can solve both the large and small scale dark matter problems. For a primordial “Zeldovich” spectrum of fluctuations the limits are m v H ≲ 550 eV and τ v H > 107 to 108 yr (the ranges mνH ≲ eV and τνH ≳ 108 yr are allowed by the model but galaxy formation becomes problematic). Low-lying levels in the nuclei151Nd and155Sm

Decay properties of excited states in the151Nd and155Sm nuclei produced by 10 MeV douterons have been investigated with in-beam gamma-gamma-coincidence equipment during bombardment of the150Nd and154Sm targets. The results largely confirm the data obtained earlier for these nuclei. The (d, p γ) reaction channel favors population of odd-parity low-spin levels, whose energies follow the rule of regular band structure for well-deformed nuclei. The level schemes are interpreted with calculations using an axial particle-rotor model with a Woods-Saxon potential.

Improved production yields of short-lived halogens were obtained from a ThO2 target, irradiated with 600 MeV protons, in combination with a negative surface ionization source. Mass-separated samples were studied by decay spectroscopy. Production yields of radioactive isotopes of chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine are presented. Incidence rates of lip cancer in males in Ragusa (Sicily) are amongst the highest in Europe [age-standardized rate (world) for 1980-82: 7.5 per 100,000]. A case-control study was conducted on 53 male cases and 106 controls matched for sex, age (+/- 2 1/2 years), residence and hospital from which cases had been drawn. The bacteria were from various sources (plant material, meat and dairy products, dough and wine) and belonged to the genera Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Pediococcus, and Streptococcus.
