Evolución demográfica de la Safor en el siglo XX

El crecimiento demográfico que se ha producido en la Safor durante el presente siglo ha sido muy importante, mucho más si tenemos en cuenta que éste se ha concentrado en los últimos 20 ó 25 años. La década de los sesenta se perfila como la etapa que marca los comienzos de este crecimiento, apoyada por una coyuntura económica favorable de base agrícola centrada en productos de exportación, que nos llevará, en los años setenta, hacia una terciarización de la economía. La posibilidad de empleo de esta coyuntura produjo fuertes movimientos de población intracomarcal y la llegada de un buen número de inmigrados.

Dreisig epilepsiekranke Kinder wurden unter kontinuierlicher EEG-Ableitung einer fahrradergometrischen Belastung unterzogen. Patienten mit einer primar generalisierten Epilepsie (acht Kinder) zeigten keine pathologischen Veranderungen. Vier von siebzehn Kindern mit einer focalen Epilepsie und zwei von funf mit einer sekundar generalisierten Epilepsie wiesen eine Verschlechterung unter Belastung auf. Hypersynchrone Aktivitaten traten besonders bei den Kindern auf, deren letzter Anfall weniger als zwei Wochen zurucklag. Ein Krampfanfall wurde bei keinem Kind ausgelost. Platinspuren konnen in synthetischen Losungen mit der Glass Carbon Elektrode (GCE) inversvoltammetrisch bestimmt werden. Fur die Bestimmung hat sich ein Acetatpuffer-Grundelektrolyt mit 9,3 mg KCl/ml und 1 mg Cd/ml gut bewahrt. Bei pH 4 konnen 0,04 μg Pt/ml nach 5 min Anreicherung bei einer Elektrolysespannung von −0,656 V bestimmt werden.

Mitochondrial myopathy--a result of clofibrate/etofibrate treatment? Case report.

A 66-year-old man had developed a myopathy while undergoing several periods of etofibrate and clofibrate therapy over the past 5 years. Discontinuation of etofibrate treatment failed to reverse his muscle illness which, however, did not progress. A muscle biopsy revealed a chronic myopathy marked by abundant, abnormally structured muscle mitochondria. His mitochondrial myopathy may represent a forme fruste of the Kearns-Sayre syndrome or other types of mitochondrial myopathy, clinically made evident by the etofibrate/clofibrate therapy, or a permanent, adverse side effect of clofibrate treatment. Ultrasonographic and radionuclide detection of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotics with low alpha-fetoprotein levels

A total of 67 cirrhotic patients with clinically suspected neoplastic degeneration and low alpha-fetoprotein levels were assessed prospectively with ultrasound and gold (198Au) scintigraphy. Ultrasound showed space-occupying lesions in 22 of the 24 patients who had a final diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (sensitivity, 95.8%) and excluded the presence of HCC in 37 of the 43 patients with cirrhosis only (specificity, 86.0%; efficiency, 90.8%). Antegrade electropapillotomy using the percutaneous transcystic approach was successfully performed in 11 of 16 dogs. When the intervention was effective, the pressure gradient between common bile duct and duodenum decreased from 6 to 1.3 mm Hg on average and returned to gradients slightly below the initial values after 4 weeks, owing to reactivation of the sphincter mechanism. Ineffective cutting, however, resulted in a temporary pressure rise. In one dog a papillary stenosis developed and was relieved by antegrade electrocutting. Soldier formation regulated by a primer pheromone from the soldier frontal gland in a higher termite, Nasutitermes lujae

In the nasute higher termite Nasutitermes lujae , the differentiation of new soldiers is suppressed or delayed by the soldiers themselves. Experimental data strongly suggest that this inhibitory effect results from the action of a primer pheromone secreted by the frontal gland of soldiers. The pheromone must be contacted directly. Thus, the frontal gland of termite soldiers assumes a new role in addition to alarm and defense, although this extension cannot be generalized to all termite species. The soldier inhibitory pheromone is evidently only one of multiple factors contributing soldier regulation in termite societies.

The pumice aggregates of Lipari Island (Aeolian Isles-Italy)

In the Island of Lipari (Aeolian Archipelago) there is a large pumice deposit. The pumice is exploited in an open-cast mine through mechanical means and taken to crushing and screening plants. Aggregates for urban construction, gravel and powder are obtained. The aggregates are used in the manufacture of light concrete. Nowadays the possibility of using pumice aggregates in order to obtain light structural concrete is being studied.

Such actions may be divided into modulation of growth, macromolecule synthesis and differentiation, modulation of immune response, interference with oxygen activation and miscellaneous. Neuraminidase deficiency presenting as non-immune hydrops fetalis

A newborn infant with oedema, ascites and hepatosplenomegaly is described. In ascites fluid foamy macrophages were found, in a liver biopsy cytoplasmic inclusions and membrane-bound vacuoles were seen. Furthermore the child excreted excessive amounts of sialic acid-rich oligosaccharides in the urine, and therefore a neurovisceral degenerative disorder was assumed. The diagnosis of sialidosis was confirmed by enzymatic assay in cultured fibroblasts, in which a complete deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme neuraminidase could be demonstrated. After recurrent septicaemias the child became dystrophic and died at the age of 6 months. Our case is compared with sialidosis observed by other authors, …

DC polarographic reduction of chloroguanide hydrochloride.

Chloroguanide hydrochloride, an antimalarial drug, shows one well-defined DC polarographic wave in Britton-Robinson buffered media. In the pH range 3–9 the observed reduction wave is related to the reduction of the two azomethine centers on the monoprotonated biguanide group (BH+). The effects of pH and other experimental variables on the limiting current and half-wave potentials as well as the reduction mechanism are discussed.

Gold-toned bipyramidal neurons of the dorsomedial cortex of Lacerta have been studied using light and electron microscopy. The spines have been classified as stubby, mushroom-shaped or thin. Thin and mushroom-shaped spines are only found on proximal and intermediate dendritic segments, whereas stubby spines are found on distal dendritic segments. A Timm's method modification for electron microscopy (sulphide-osmium procedure) has been used. Timm-positive axonal endings usually synapse on thin and mushroom-shaped spines, whereas Timm-negative axonal endings usually synapse on stubby spines. Deuteron Magnetic Resonance Study of Order and Dynamics in Liquid Crystal Polymers

Abstract Thermotropic nematic polyesters, specifically deuterated at different positions of the polymer chain are studied by multiple pulse dynamic NMR. Analysis of the NMR experiments is achieved, employing a comprehensive model, based on the stochastic Liouville equation. Computer simulations provide the orientational distributions and conformations of the polymer chains and the correlation times of the various motions. In the anisotropic melt the correlation times for chain reorientation and trans-gauche-isomerization are in the range of 0.1–10 ns.
