Optical pumping and unstable nuclei

The paper reviews the application of optical pumping to short-lived nuclei, where either the nuclear polarisation is detected by the β-decay asymmetry or the atomic polarisation by Stern-Gerlach-analyzer. Moreover the paper deals with collinear laser spectroscopy on beams of short-lived, mass-separated isotopes. The aim of the experiments is the systematic investigation of nuclear structure through the determination of spin, moments and charge radii from the hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the atomic spectra. The impact of these experiments on the theory of nuclear forces and structure is discussed by means of a few examples.

On the dynamical stability of negative conductance free running oscillators

For a class of weakly nonlinear autonomous systems exhibiting both resistive and reactive nonlinearities, asymptotic orbital stability is investigated through a new narrow-band differential approach. The main result is the derivation of the exact characteristic polynomial associated with the local dynamics of the amplitude and phase of the free-running oscillation to be tested. For an nth-order circuit, (n - 1) necessary and sufficient stability conditions are then obtained, in an analytical explicit form suitable for computer implementation, by resorting to conventional Hurwitz test algorithms. Metabolic waste products are removed from the cells in these aggregates by diffusion into the growth medium. In Fig. 1 we have plotted the binding energy of a K-shell electron around hypothetical nuclei up to Z ≈ 200. The prevalence of hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection was significantly higher among the relatives of 79 carriers of HBsAg with antibody to HDV (index cases) than among relatives of 111 carriers without serological evidence of HDV infection (controls). Antibody to HDV was found in 45 of the 80 (56%) carriers of HBsAg in families of index cases but only in 2 of 59 (3%) carriers in families of controls (P less than 0.0001). In summer 1981, six long-distance runners covered a 1100-km-course across the Federal Republic of Germany within 20 days. Four of them were on a more or less ovo-lacto-vegetable and two a vegetarian diet. In spite of a high absolute but indeed low relative protein supply, a continuous decrease of the total protein content could be noticed in the serum. Partially compatible binary mixtures of linear flexible polymers are considered in the presence of a wall which preferentially adsorbs one component. Using a Flory-Huggins type mean field approach, it is shown that in typical cases at two-phase coexistence the wall is always « wet », i.e. coated with a macroscopically thick layer of the preferred phase, and the transition to the non wet state occurs at volume fractions of the order of 1/~N (where N is the chain length) at the coexistence curve. 3C273 has been monitored by EXOSAT over the period December 1983 to June 1984 in 4 observations. In the December observation the flux was high and the spectrum showed a power law index of 1.5 changing to 0.9 at~8 keV. In subsequent observations the flux dropped to~40% of its original value and the hard tail disappeared. In the last observation the LE flux increased by a factor of 2 with no accompanying ME flux increase.

Long-term thermomechanical degradation of molten polystyrene

Abstract Rheological data on polystyrene samples processed for long periods under various mechanical stresses are presented. The data indicate that thermomechanical degradation occurs and that the rate of thermal degradation is increased by the applied stress. Moreover degradation does not reach a limiting value even at high processing times.
