Specific and sensitive procedures have been developed which enabled the structure elucidation of the polypeptide antibiotics (peptaibols), paracelsin isolated from Trichoderma reesei, and of trichotoxin A-50 from Trichoderma viride, by fast atom bombardment and field desorption mass spectrometry. Patterns of puffing activity and chromosomal polymorphism in Drosophila subobscura : 3. Puffing activity depression by inbreeding.

The effect of inbreeding on the puffing patterns of polytene chromosomes of Drosophila subobscura was analysed. Puffing activity was studied in two strains of D. subobscura: one which had been subject to inbreeding for 288 generations, and in the hybrids from a cross between them. A strong overall decrease in puffing activity was found in the inbred line. In general, hybrids behaved in a similar way to the inbred line or showed activity intermediate between the two lines. The fertility and viability of the two homozygous lines and of the hybrids were also determined. These parameters of fitness are very low in the inbred line. Hybrids displayed intermediate behaviour.

As has been formerly shown, the double-spurred flowers of the South African genus Diascia (Scrophulariaceae) produce fatty oil as a primary attractant. Their oil-collecting pollinators have so far remained unknown. It is concluded from the morphology and from direct evidence of flower visitation that the recently established Melittid genus Rediviva represents the co-evolved pollinator group of these plants, at the same time demonstrating the presence of “manual” oil collectors in Southern Africa. Abstract The thermal behaviour of complexes of bromazepan with Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The complexes decompose in two steps: dehydration and decomposition. A correlation between the dehydration temperatures of MB2Xn and the coordinating ability of X is observed.

HLA-DR phenotypes and blood levels of T cell subsets

Blood mononuclear cell and T cell subsets values were analyzed in 53 Sicilian individuals according to HLA-DR phenotypes. The results demonstrate that DR1-positive subjects show a significant increase of blood T cell subsets whereas DR3-positive subjects show a non-significant decrease of these values. These results suggest that gene(s) associated with HLA-DR could be one of the factors which affect blood levels of T cell subsets.

A synthesis of the methylthieno[3,2-c]cyclohepteno[b]indole 7 from 2-methylthieno[3,2-b]cycloheptanone 3 is described. Unsuccessful attempts to prepare the isomeric thienocycloheptenoindole system present in formula 2, from the dihydrobenzothiophenone 8, and from derivatives of 5-(2-thienyl)-4-oxopentanoic acid, 17 and 18, and from N-benzylcycloheptindol-1-one 22 were unsuccessful. The preparation of 4,5-dihydro-2-phenyl-1-thienylmethyl-3H-pyridazin-3-one 20 and of the 5-aminopyrazole 21 are reported.

The seasonal variation of phytoplankton photosynthesis was measured with 14C-method in a warmed ice-free pond in central Finland. Simultaneously with in situ measurements the photosynthesis was also measured in an incubator with different water temperatures and constant light (ca. 16 W m−2). The total annual photosynthesis was 57.2 C m−2 a−1. The portion of the winter and spring production of the annual photosynthesis was 18.4%, that of the autumn production ws 17.4%. Summary The influence of (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammoniumchloride on growth and cell metabolism of Triticum aestivum var. Kolibri was investigated. CCC was added to the nutrient solution on the 11th day of development with a final concentration of 10 −2 mol·1 −1 . It immediately stopped root growth and showed a strong inhibitory influence on the growth of the leaves. Smaller and fewer cells accounted for the reduction in final leaf size of about 40 %. The content of soluble proteins and soluble reducing sugars were significantly increased in the treated leaves. A case of possible vocal convergence between frogs and a bird in Himalayan torrents

Several species of frogs of the subgenusRana (Paa) and one species of bird of the genusPhylloscopus, which are calling in or near torrents in the Himalayas, show striking similarities in their vocal signals: 1) The calls are composed of short sequences of notes separated by periods of silence; 2) the notes are pure, short, and have a narrow frequency band; 3) within each sequence, the notes are rhythmically emitted. We suggest that these characteristics may be adaptive, the convergence being caused by the selective pressure of the acoustic constraints of the biotope.

A quantitative electron microscopic study of the crystallite structure of molecular weight fractions of linear polyethylene

Utilizing thin-section techniques, transmission electron microscope studies were performed on a series of bulk-crystalized fractions of linear polyethylene covering the range M = 5 × 103−6 × 106. The crystallization conditions were varied from long-time isothermal to rapid quenching. Quantitative analysis could be carried out on such samples crystallized under controlled conditions. The crystallite thickness distributions and long periods are presented in terms of histograms. Early auditory evoked potentials: developmental aspects and validity in neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Auditory evoked potentials and in this context especially five waves in the first 10 ms (early auditory evoked potentials = EAEP) are a diagnostic aid in topodiagnosis of posterior fossa diseases. This is due to waves I to V which arise along the acoustic nerve and in brain stem structures such as medulla, pons and mid-brain. Besides an indication about the site of a lesion in the posterior fossa, wave V allows an objective threshold determination. The present results were gained in normal children aged 1-3 years and in children with neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Abstract A calcium, calmodulin-dependent protein kinase activity has been partially purified by calmodulin-Sepharose affinity chromatography from the soluble fraction of Neurospora crassa . The phosphorylated peptide has an apparent molecular mass on SDS-polyacrylamide gel of 47 kDa. The apparent half maximal phosphorylation is obtained after 1.5 min at 30° C in the presence of calcium and calmodulin. The apparent half maximal activation of the phosphorylation is obtained at 1 μM calcium, and 0.1 or 0.2 μM calmodulin from bovine brain or Neurospora , respectively. The 32 P incorporation is enhanced about 10-fold by calmodulin.

A method for the isolation of xanthomegnin, viomellein, rubrosulphin, viopurpurin, and brevianamide A from Penicillium viridicatum (DSM 2447) is described. After extraction, HPLC was performed with a preparative silicagel column, eluted with toluene / ethyl acetate / formic acid (27/9/1, v/v/v) and dichloromethane / acetic acid (9/1, v/v). The toxins were detected with a UV-monitor. It was possible to isolate them in an absolutely pure state. The described method is operationally simple and very efficient.
