Diurnal variation of tree pollen in the air in finland

1984

Abstract The pollen was collected with Burkard spore traps in Turku and Jyvaskyla, in southern and central Finland. Selected days of high concentration were analysed for hour to hour concentrations. The diurnal variation of pollen concentration was variable in Alnus, Betula, Juniperus and Pinus, while Picea, Populus, Quercus, Salix and Ulmus had regular daytime maxima och nightly minima. The pollen concentrations were closely correlated with increasing temperatures and decreasing relative humidities. A significant relationship with wind speed was also found, except in Alnuts and Betula. The most significant relationships with wind speed were found in Salix and Quercus, the pollen of which t…

Observaciones sobre algunos criterios tafonómicos usados en la interpretación de asociaciones malacológicas fósiles.

1984

In the present paper a revision of some taphonomic criteria commonly used in the interpretation of fossil mollusca assemblages is realized . The field work on living and death assemblages of mollusca in a shallow muddy bottom has been carried out in the coast near Denia (Alicante, Spain). Although the supposed lineal relation between specific abundance and probability of autochthony could explain the structure of part of the considered assemblages, in other a clear disagreement due to a massive incursion of youth elements in observed . By other hand, the possibility of horizontal transport not detectable by these means (anonymous alochtonic fluxes) imposes another limitation to the pretende…

Trainability of underwater breath-holding time.

1984

From diving practice we know that breath-holding time (BHT) can be increased by training. This examination was set up to illuminate whether BHT underwater can be trained decisively in a short period of time. The authors investigated whether physiologic or psychological aspects are the main constituents of the above-mentioned BHT phenomenon. BHT and the "onset point" of involuntary respiratory movements of 64 subjects were registered after deep inspiration and immersion in ca. 1 m. Two different tests were set up: (I) 2 breath-holds per day on 5 consecutive days, (II) 5 repeated breath-holds with pauses of 3 min in between. BHT of the first test was shorter underwater than in similar experim…

Age affects the metabolic rate of insect brain.

1984

Abstract Brains of adult insects can be isolated and studied vitro. In female blowflies the oxygen uptake of the brain is age dependent. A steady increase is followed by a precipitous decrease around the middle of the life span. These changes are accompanied by alterations of mitochondrial structure and deposits of lipofuscin-like material.

Multi-chronometric ages and origin of Archaean tonalitic gneisses in Finnish Lapland: A case for long crustal residence time

1984

The Tojottamanselka gneisses of the Koitelainen region, northern Finland, have been dated by the Sm-Nd and the common Pb methods. The Sm-Nd data of seven samples from a small area (100 m × 100 m) define an isochron ofT=3.06±0.12 (2σ) Ga, with correspondingINd=0.50848±9 (2σ), oreNd(T)=−3.7±1.8. This age is in good agreement with the zircon U-Pb discordia age (3.1 Ga) reported by Kroner et al. (1981) and is interpreted as the time of magmatic emplacement. The distinctly negativeeNd(T) value is found for the first time for Archean tonalitic gneisses and implies derivation of these magmas by remelting of continental material with a long (200–500 Ma) crustal residence time. A few samples, on the…

Vitamin E deficiency and the susceptibility to lipid peroxidation of mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles

1984

Effects of a short-term vitamin E deficiency on some lipid peroxidative properties were investigated in mouse cardiac and skeletal muscles. The concentration of vitamin E decreased 35.8% in 5 weeks and 61.2% in 12 weeks in skeletal muscle. The corresponding decrease in cardiac muscle was 65.7% in 12 weeks. Simultaneously the susceptibility of muscle homogenates to in vitro lipid peroxidation increased with 48.6% (5 weeks) and 44.5% (12 weeks) in skeletal muscle and with 101.8% (12 weeks) in cardiac muscle. Highly significant negative correlations were observed between the concentration of vitamin E and in vitro lipid peroxidation in cardiac and skeletal muscles. Also the sensitivity to Fe2+…

Weyers acrodental dysostosis in a family.

1984

A four generation family with postaxial polydactyly of hands and feet and dental anomalies is reported. Lower and upper incisors were abnormal in shape and number. Additional findings were prominent ear anthelices, hypoplastic and dysplastic nails and mild shortness of stature. Inheritance was dominant with variable expression. It is proposed that the family presents the syndrome of acrofacial dysostosis described by Weyers in 1952. To differentiate it from other acrofacial dysostoses, we suggest naming the condition acrodental dysostosis.

Identification of Merkel cells in human skin by specific cytokeratin antibodies:

1984

Merkel cells are special neurosecretory cells which, in adult human skin, are usually very scarce. By immunofluorescence microscopy using antibodies to human cytokeratin polypeptide no. 18, we localized distinct non-keratinocyte cells in the glandular ridges of human fetal and adult plantar epidermis. Using electron and immunofluorescence microscopy, these cells were identified as Merkel cells containing typical neurosecretory granules as well as bundles of intermediate-sized filaments and desmosomes. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of the cytoskeletal fractions of microdissected epidermal preparations highly enriched in Merkel cells indicated the presence of cytokeratin polypeptides no…

1984

The thrombocyte count, the factor XIII (F XIII) activity, the concentration of fibrinogen (F I), prothrombin (F II), fibronectin (CIG), albumin and the proteinase inhibitors antithrombin III (AT III), alpha 2-macroglobulin (A2M), alpha 1-antitrypsin (A1A) and Cl-esterase inactivator (Cl-INA) were determined in ten children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). Changes due to the disease and to therapy were observed. Before the start of treatment the patients had thrombocytopenia secondary to the disease, and the proteinase inhibitors--especially Cl-INA and A1A--were raised. During the induction phase the thrombocyte count rose but there was also a marked increase in the concentration of…

The fiber patterns of a series of liquid crystalline polymers were analysed. For polymers with smectic phases and for polymers with long spacers and nematic phases, the mesogenic groups orient perpendicularly to the polymer main chains which are parallel to the fiber axis. The fiber pattern indicate a short range order of the mesogenic groups analogous to that in low-molecular weight liquid crystals. For polymers with short spacer groups and nematic phases qualitatively different fiber patterns are found. These fiber patterns are indicative for a special nematic phase formed by ribbon-like molecules.

Transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon

1984

Percutaneous transrenal ureteral occlusion using a detachable balloon filled with silicone was performed in 20 patients. The main indications were palliation of large urinary fistulas and as a treatment of last resort for severe dysuria in patients with advanced pelvic malignancies. In 6 patients the contralateral kidney was rendered nonfunctional to obviate the need for bilateral nephrostomy. Due to frequent obstruction of the tube, ureteral blockage in 3 became insufficient. Two dislocated balloons were extracted percutaneously and replaced. In order to achieve effective interruption of urinary flow down the ureter, well-functioning external nephrostomy drainage is necessary.

Acute effects of shock-type vibration transmitted to the hand-arm system.

1984

The aim of the project was to find out whether shock-type vibration of hand-tools compared to non-impulsive vibration has stronger acute effects on the hand-arm system and therefore needs a stricter evaluation from the occupational health point of view in comparison with the requirements of the Draft International Standard ISO-DIS 5349. Under laboratory conditions, subjects were exposed to simulated vibration of hand-tools (grinder, chain saw, hammer-drill, pneumatic hammer, rivet hammer and nailer). The following evaluation criteria were used: biomechanical transmissibility of the hand-arm system (wrist, elbow joint, shoulder joint); muscle-activity (m. flexor carpi ulnaris, m. biceps, m. …

Hydrogen in metals: Quantum aspects

1984

Hydrogen atoms are usually considered chemisorbed at well-defined sites on surfaces. We advocate a completelydifferent view, and demonstrate that chemisorbed hydrogen exhibits pronounced quantum effects. The hydrogen atom is to a large degree delocalized in both ground and excited-stated configurations: a proper description can only be given in terms of hydrogen energy bands. An analogous picture emerges for hydrogen isotopes (including muon) diffusing interstitially in bulk metals. The ground state there corresponds to a self-trapped situation: a localized impurity with an associated lattice distortion field. A powerful computational scheme is presented, which entails (i) the construction …

Endocytotic activity in epitheloid and Langhans’ giant cells

1984

In the experimental tubulo-interstitial (anti-basement membrane) nephritis in the rat, electron microscopic studies after the in vivo microinjection of native ferritin in areas of granulomatous inflammation near the surface of the kidney indicate that epitheloid and multinucleate Langhans’ giant cells are capable of endocytosis and particularly of micropinocytosis. This suggests the possibility that endocytotic activities as well as secretion phenomena are important in the immune defense mechanisms linked with these “specifically” developed cells.

Surgical treatment of pancreatic cancer

1984

From 1964 to 1982, there were 782 patients treated for carcinoma of the pancreas. In 174 patients pancreaticoduodenal resection was possible (22%). Until 1977 we performed Whipple procedures, while from 1978 to 1982 total pancreatectomy was preferred. Comparing the results of both methods, we did not find any advantages of total pancreatectomy. Operative mortality did not decrease, survival time did not extend, and the higher resection rates (up to 26%) for more advanced tumor stages were accompanied by greater morbidity. With respect to the patients with inoperable cancer of the pancreas, we found over the last 5 years that the rate of those not undergoing surgery has climbed from 8% to 25…

Dynamic evaluation of aggregation and agglutination of red blood cells.

1984

Viscoelastic evaluation of aggregation and agglutination of red blood cells was attempted. A concentric double cylinder viscoelastometer was used for determining the dynamic rigidity modulus and loss modulus of blood sample. The dynamic rigidity modulus of horse blood were measured over a wide range of hematocrit. The relation between the viscoelastic behavior and the erythrocyte sedimentation was examined. The change in the amount of surface charge of enzyme treated red blood cells was qualitatively estimated from the measurements of dynamic viscoelasticity of red blood cells suspension with added poly-L-lysine. The dynamic rigidity modulus of red blood cells agglutinated by adding lectin …

Ciclos pelíticos de bahía Interdistributaria del nivel intramareal inferior del grupo Roda-Oroel (sector occidental del paleodelta de Ager, Lérida)

1984

The deposits of the ancient Ager deltaic system (Lérida, Spain) are characterized in some way by the existence of cycles constituted, in a large scale, by alternances of pelites and sandstone bodies. According to geological literature these deposits represent bay marls and stream-mouth-bars, in the eastern-most counterpart. In this area sorne pelitic sections show a pronounced cyclical pattern devoid to repetitions of two terms: A marly bioturbated one, and the other one, constituted by undisturbed delicately laminated clays. Part of the deposits of the "Intramarea1 Inferior" level (''Tramo Superior" of the Roda-Oroel depositional system) in the area comprised between La Régola cementery an…

Complex formation of hypoxanthine and 6-mercaptopurine with Cd(II) ion

1984

Reaction of Cd(II) ion with hypoxanthine (H2 Y) and with 6-mercaptopurine (H2 MP) in dioxane-water (50%) leads to the formation of CdY·2H2O and Cd(HMP)2·2H2O, respectively. In methanolic medium Cd(II) and H2 MP give Cd(MP)·H2O. These compounds have been characterized by chemical analysis, IR spectra and thermogravimetric analysis. The stability constant of CdY complex at 25±0.1 °C and 1M ionic strength with NaClO4 in dioxane-water medium is log β=10.25±0.05.

1984

In cultures of bone marrow (BM) supplemented with L cell-derived colony-stimulating factor a pure population of macrophages (M phi) differentiates, which can be further propagated with a doubling time of 3.8 days. "Young" BMM phi obtained on day 8 of culture were shown to act as antigen-presenting cells inducing the antigen-specific proliferation of the cloned T cell line ST2/K.9, whereas "old" M phi had lost this ability. However, at any time tested (up to 132 days) the presentation function of old BMM phi could be completely restored by pulsing the cells with lymphokines (LK). A duration of 11 hr for the LK-pulse was sufficient to trigger the M phi to exert an optimal presentation functio…

Study of band crossings in 130Xe

1984

Abstract Excited states in 130Xe were populated in the reaction 130 Te (α, 4 n ) , and the subsequent de-excitation was studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. High-spin states were observed to a possible spin of 19 kh at an excitation energy of 7 MeV. Band-crossings due to h 11 2 neutrons and protons were observed. The triaxial cranked shell model was applied in order to study the quasiparticle content of different bands. Excitation energies of two-quasiparticle states were calculated in the framework of the semiempirical shell model.
