During the past decade, diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC) has been one of the most intensively studied subjects in hematology. DIC is a dynamic pathologic process caused by the entrance of foreign material into the circulation, or by exposure to abnormal surfaces. The Effect of Spectral Diffusion on the Saturation Transient Regime

Saturation kinetics of inhomogeneous resonance lines has been investigated in very dilute ruby samples at T=4.2°K by the saturation transient technique. Experimental evidence of the effectiveness of intraline spectral diffusion is reported. Satisfactory agreement is found between the experimental results and a theoretical model in which spectral diffusion is ascribed to the time fluctuations of the hyperfine field. Spectral diffusion times of the order of 10-5 sec are determined.

Mit der Bromcyan-Methode wird 6-Nor-1 (4b) gewonnen und danach an N-6 alkyliert. Partial Synthesis of New Ergoline Derivatives from Clavine Alkaloids, IV: Agroclavines Monosubstituted at N-1, C-2, and N-6 Agroclavine (1) is alkylated at the indole nitrogen with alkyl iodide in ammonia/potassium amide. It is convertible to 2-iodo-1 (3) with N-iodosuccinimide. Compound 6-nor-1 can be prepared by means of the cyanogen bromide method; alkylation at N-6 is described exemplarily for the ethyl derivative.

In einer Reihe von 17 Histamin-H2-antagonistisch wirksamen 5-substituierten 4-Pyrimidinonen wird durch Berechnung von Wechselwirkungsenergien ein Modell fur die Rezeptorbindungsstelle des Substituenten am C-5 des Pyrimidinons vorgeschlagen. Als Bindungsstelle fungiert die Aminosaure Arginin. A Binding Site Model for H2-Receptor Antagonists of the 4-Pyrimidone Type Based on calculations of the energies of interaction for a series of seventeen 5-substituted 4-pyrimidones with H2-antagonistic activity, a receptor binding site model for substituents at C-5 of the pyrimidone ring is proposed. The binding site is modeled using the amino acid arginine.
Quantitative Cerebral Blood Flow Mapping in Stroke and During Mental Stimulation After Intravenous Injection of 195mAu

The new short life isotope 195mAu has some suitable features for quantitative cerebral blood flow mapping. Its half-life is 30.5 s; therefore an injection can be repeated after 3 min (six half-lives) without any need for background subtraction and with the same specific activity. The calculated whole body radiation dose after three successive administrations of 25 mCi 195mAu amounts to 50 mrad. In comparison to a 99mTc pertechnetate injection it is estimated that the dose to the patients is reduced by a factor of eight (Garcia et al. 1981).

Millimeter-Wave Effects on Candida Albicans Cells

In preliminary measurements, Candida albicans cultures exposed to 1 kHz square-wave-modulated microwaves at 72 GHz exhibited a significantly reduced number of colony-forming units in comparison with nonirradiated controls. To study whether the same effect could also be caused by continuous-wave (CW) irradiation, sedimented cells were exposed to either 1 kHz square-wave-modulated or CW microwaves at 72 GHz, with the same peak power. CW-exposed cells showed a higher growth rate (about 25%), whereas a reduction of about 15% was seen in cells exposed to square-wave-modulated microwaves in comparison with sham-exposed controls.

Synthesis of methylmethacrylate (MMA) complexes with AlR3 or EtnAlCl1-n has been investigated, viz. influence of reaction conditions (including the type of complexing compound, initial molar ratio Al/MMA and ageing time of the complex) on the yield of copolymerization of the MMA complex with ethylene in the presence of organometallic Ti-Al catalysts. The results, based on IR spectrophotometry of reaction products of MMA with organoaluminium compounds, have been discussed. Some characteristics of MMA-ethylene copolymers have been included.

Die Wirkung solcher Spasmolytika wird im allgemeinen als neurotrop oder muskulotrop klassifiziert. Die neurotrope Wirkung wird mit einer Beeinflussung des autonomen Nervensystems in Verbindung gebracht, wahrend die muskulotrope Wirkung in einer direkten Beeinflussung der glatten Muskelzelle gesehen wird. Beispiele fur Pharmaka mit neurotroper Wirkung sind Anticholinergika oder α-Rezeptorenblocker, wahrend Papaverin eine klassische Substanz aus der Gruppe der muskulotropen Spasmolytika ist.

En el contexto general del sistema hidrogeológico del Macizo del Caroch se individualizan los recursos hidráulicos de la comarca de la Canal de Navarrés-Enguera. La procedencia del agua utilizada en la comarca estudiada es mayoritariamente subterránea, sin que se observen síntomas de sobreexplotación, siquiera puntuales. La influencia de las extracciones por bombeo sobre los manantiales puede considerarse como un mecanismo de regulación hiperanual. El modo óptimo de explotación de los recursos debe contemplar la utilización conjunta del agua superficial y subterránea, así como la introducción paulatina de sistemas de riego menos consuntivos que los actuales.

Die Arbeitsbedingungen fur die Bestimmung von Cobalt und Nickel in Biomatrices durch Chelat-Gas-Chromatographie und Adsorptionsvoltammetrie werden angegeben. In der Adsorptionsvoltammetrie ist die Verwendung geeigneter, die Bestandteile der Aschen bindender Grundlosungen von besonderer Wichtigkeit. Die Trockenveraschung der Proben ist fur die Bestimmung der beiden Elemente in Biomatices geeignet. Die Richtigkeit beider Verfahren wird anhand der Analyse von zertifizierten Referenzproben gezeigt. Ergebnisse orientierender Versuche zur Bestimmung der Bindungsformen der beiden Elemente werden fur Trockenmilchpulver mitgeteilt.
Therapy of Peritoneal Murine Cancer with Biological Response Modifiers

We have used a murine renal adenocarcinoma of spontaneous origin (Renca) inplanted in the peritoneal cavity to study the therapeutic potential of biological response modifiers (BRMs) used alone or in conjunction with chemotherapy. This tumor model is therapeutically challenging since following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection, the tumor grows progressively with hemorrhagic ascites, abdominal metastases to lymph nodes, liver, spleen, most serous membranes, and, in some animals, metastases to extra-abdominal sites (lungs). In the absence of therapy, death invariably occurs within 36 +/- 2 days. The tumor is efficiently lysed in 4 hours by peritoneal cells isolated from mice treated with BRMs.…

Employing a special contact transformation devised by S. Lie, which takes spheres into lines, we interpret the Feynman diagrams of photon electron scattering in terms of vector systems. This gives a nice kinematic model of Compton scattering. We further compute in detail the transition probabilities of the Compton scattering process by making use of the calculus of chains of complexes from classical invariant theory rather than applying the usual Dirac-matrix technique. In the final paragraph of this paper an application of our calculations to the treatment of myon decay is indicated.

In this paper a Speech Recognition Methodology is proposed which is based on the general assumption of ‘fuzzyness’ of both speech-data and knowledge-sources. Besides this general principle, there are other fundamental assumptions which are also the bases of the proposed methodology: ‘Modularity’ in the knowledge organization, ‘Homogeneity’ in the representation of data and knowledge, ‘Passiveness’ of the ‘understanding flow’ (no backtraking or feedback), and ‘Parallelism’ in the recognition activity.

Abstract Samples (0.1 g) containing molybdenum disulphide are digested with aqua regia or with a (1 + 1) hydrofluoric/nitric acid mixture, without complete destruction of the matrix, and the molybdenum is determined in an air/acetylene flame, after emulsification with a non-ionic surfactant (Nemol K-39). The detection limit is ca. 30 μg Mo g−1, and the r.s.d. is 2.9% for 6 analyses of a sample containing 6.5 mg Mo g−1.

The validity of Barbus lorteti Sauvage, 1882, a cyprinid fish endemic to the lower course of the Orontes river in Syria and Turkey which Karaman synonymized with Barbus longiceps, is reaffirmed. A lectotype is designated and a redescription is given. The most outstanding morphological feature of Barbus lorteti — a pharyngeal formula of 2.3.4–4.3.2, the first tooth of the inner row being enlarged and molariform, which is shared by Barbus subquincunciatus from the Tigris-Euphrates basin and Barbus longiceps from the Jordan river basin — is regarded as an adaptation to a molluscan diet.
